Costumes, candy and good fun.Halloween has always been one

of my favorite times of the year.Fortunately for people living

North of Montana, there isn’t ashortage of things to do with yourlittle princesses and pirates.

The day’s festivities begin at theMontana Avenue Library at noon. The library is offering prizes to allkids who come in costumed up. Kidsfrom preschool to teens are invited.

Highlighting the afternoon is thefifth annual Halloween Hop, whichrecruits businesses along MontanaAvenue to get in on the ghoulish funand offer treats for kids of all ages.

Throngs of kids — and theirparents — stroll up and down the bustling shopping district from 3 p.m. — 6 p.m.

There will be trick-or-treatingwith a number of stores decked outin appropriately scary fashion. I'mproud to say my office will be oneof them! Be sure to stop by and sayhello at 1608 Montana Ave. I'llhave plenty of treats for the kids toenjoy and it's always nice to visitwith my neighbors. In themeantime, do come by with yourkids to see the fun decorations inthe window of my private officewithin the Coldwell Banker office.

Once you’ve made your waydown Montana collecting all of thetreats, you may want to head offinto the neighborhood to gathereven more goodies.

With many of the homes offering candy to costumedyoungsters, it’s the perfect place to wrap up the evening.

However, when you hit thestreets always remember to putsafety first. Below are tips from TheSanta Monica Police Department tohelp keep you and yours safeduring Old Hallows Eve.

Staying safe• Try to trick-or-treat while there is stillsunlight outside. • Wear a costume that makes it easierfor you to walk, see and be seen. • If you must be out at night, make surethat your costume is light in color. • Carry a flashlight with you, so you cansee and be seen easily. • Use reflective tape on your costume to

be seen easily. • Use makeup instead of a mask. • If you must use a mask, make sure to take off your mask beforecrossing the street. • If someone older cannot go with you,trick-or-treat with a group. • Plan your trick-or-treat route aheadof time. Pick well-lit streets. Tell yourfamily which streets you will be on. • Cross only at street corners — nevercross between parked cars or mid-block. • Wait until you get home to sort, checkand eat your treats. • Parents should help children check allcandy. Unwrapped or unsealed candyshould not be eaten.
