ALPHA ALPHA CHAPTER MINUTES October 2014

Julia Cleveland, president, called our meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Mary Blanche Rice gave an excellent inspirational which was a entitled “A memo from God”. In all the chaos surrounding us we must always remember that God loves us. We were all encouraged to be of good cheer because God is in control. Leslie Scarboro introduced our speaker, Bryan Thompson. He gave a very informative presentation on the SE Georgia Health System Foundation. The Foundation raises money for the hospital and every penny raised goes back into the hospital. The latest facility to be built is the Hugh Nunnally House. This building houses cancer patients who come from outside of our area. It also supplies respite for families whose loved ones are going through the hospital system and it houses third year medical students who are doing their rotations. Mr. Thompson also mentioned that a family from Sea Island had upgraded the landscaping in the area. A very inspiring presentation. It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved as read in the newsletter. Treasurer’s report was approved. We have $1,060 turned in for the pancake breakfast and 24 dues paid members. A $400.00 grant-in-aid was presented to Sierra Smith who attends the Coastal College. She is majoring in early education and special education. OLD BUSINESS Our fundraiser will be serving pancakes at Applebee’s on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014. Sisters had 8 tickets to sell. May Jo Bunkley Scholarship for $1,000 is due in Feb. At this time, there is only one application. Members were encouraged to apply if they were working on a graduate degree in education. Julia gave each member a Chapter Action Plan for Alpha Alpha for this biennium. She will send this to the state. Our president attended the executive board meeting in Macon on Sept. 27, 2014 and reported the following:

Budget cut due to loss of members 4 chapters closed Certificates for members of 35 years will be forthcoming SE Regional will be held in Savannah – July 15-18, 2015

The state is asking the chapters to donate funds to assist with the SE Regional in July. There are different levels of donations and Julia suggested that we donate at the Peach Level which is a $50.00 donation. Motion was made and seconded to donate at the Peach Level. Motion passed. Congratulations to Dr. Dianne Lawton for being published in the most recent DKG Journal. The article was excellent. A thank you note from Dr. Smith, principal at Goodyear Elementary, was shared with the chapter. She was appreciative of the school supplies that were donated in September. Remember to give your ideas to Julia for a spring get-together with our DKG families. Our sisters were excited to initiate two new members, Emily Mason and Christina Brantley. Congratulations! Betsy has our web site up and running. The address is www.alphaalphachapter.weebly.com Thanks, Betsy! Our next meeting will be at Applebee’s. Come prepared to serve pancakes! Julia will be in touch via email and newsletter with us for directions, time, etc. Stay tuned. Respectfully submitted, Becky Bridges, Secretary
