Numerical Reasoning •Used to assess your understanding of tables of statistical and

numerical data and your ability to make logical deductions.

•Used to your measure ability to interpret number work youwould encounter in the role

•When faced with a numerical tests you may be required to- identify relevant facts from tables provided

- work out percentages- work out averages- use basic ratios, decimals and fractions- make multiple calculations to get to the answer

High-level Crit ical Reasoning •Graduate Tests are at the top of the numerical tree

•Difficulty lies in the complexity of the numerical data which

questions are based on, and the nature of the problems you willbe required to solve.

•Fundamentally different to Maths Tests such as A’Levels

•Designed to measure your ability to correctly interpret numericaldata and use this to solve problems and make decisions

Numerical Reasoning: Example•On a turnover of £8.5 million, the gross profit made by your

business is £2.7 million. From this figure must be takenoverhead costs of £1,425,000 to arrive at net profit. What is the

net profit to turnover ratio?

•A – 17.%•B – 15.5%•C – 15%

•D – 16.5%•E – 16%

• Answer: C - 15%

 Answer •First work out the net profit•2.700000-1,425000 = 1.275,000

•Present 1.275000 as a % of 8.5 million(1.275.000/8.500.000 X 100) = 0.15 (15%)

 The only complication with this example is the

language used.

not others.•Don’t get Stuck : Avoid spending too long on one question.•Don’t guess: Boost your chances by eliminating the obviously wrong

answers (distracters) and increase your chances from 1 in 5 to 1 in 2•Timing : One minute per question (Numerical Reasoning)•Don’t lose your way : Ensure answer corresponds with question
