Experiences were shared by Prof. Brig. Rashid, who was the key person to take care of the Peshawer Survivors. In a special workshop he shared the various aspects with a gathering of mental health professionals

mhGAP: Capacity BuildingWorkshops on Psychotrauma

Brig. Dr Mowadat Hussain Rana conducted a skill based workshop on handling the effects of trauma at Psychotrauma Centre, KEMU.

It was widely attended by Mental Health Professionals as well as postgraduate psychiatric and psychology trainees.

mhGAP: Skills Training;Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

A special latest psychotherapy for Traumatic patients specially was also introduced to different Mental Health Professionals (MHPs)

Two postgraduate trainees were enrolled to get the training first hand from the master trainers in EMDR in collaboration with UK.

mhGAP: Goals;Promotion & Prevention

The issues were highlighted at the national and international conferences in Pakistan.

Psychotrauma Centre maintains a close liasion with Mental Health Professional (MHPs) from all the provinces and cities.

mhGAP: Implementation of the Mental Health Ordinance 2001

The Psychotrauma Centre took initiatives in matter of National Importance such as Revising the Mental Health Ordinance and taking practical steps to implement it in form of an act.

Number of meetings were carried out among to review in detail the current ordinance

Most recently the Psychotrauma Centre held a 3 hour workshop at the 21st National Pakistan Psychiatric Conference about the Forensic Psychiatry and Mental Health Ordinance Revision Process

mhGap: National cases of Mentally Ill patients

On National level the cases were pursued whereever mentally ill persons were at stake. For example the in case of famous case of Khizer Hayat.

Khizer Hayat was a policeman who developed psychosis during his prison. He was psychotic for past 8 years and was resistant to treatment. His black warrants were suspended as he was found to be be suffering from PSYCHOSIS by to Board of Certification.

Psychotrauma Centre, played an active role in collaboration and public awareness about such a key issue against the international human rights and Pakistan Penal Code.

This highlighted further caveats in the execution of the law by different stakeholders such as prison laws, police laws and mental health law itself.

mhGAP: Kasur DebacleFollowing the Kasur Incident, the Psychotrauma center made serial visits at Kasur in close coordination with the security personnels despite the active threats.

Team of Psychiatrists Prof. Aftab Asif, Dr Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Dr Usman Amin Hotiana, and the Principal Psychologists, Dr Tanvir, Dr Tasneem and Dr Rubina Mehmood also made visits.

The assessments were made in Kasur with the two dozen victims.

Subsequently the recommendations were made and sent to the govt.

mhGAP: National Guidelines for Treament and Management

Department participated actively with the primary Pakistan Psychiatric Society in formation of National Guidelines.

For example, most recently Dr Usman Amin Hotiana (KEMU)was nominated to collaborate with Dr Tamizuddin (Institute of Psychiatry)'GUIDELINES FOR POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION' They together made the first draft. Just last week the final version has been approved by National Gynaecological Association & PPS.
