Hopefully, to become a better designer in AutoCAD Plant 3D by

using these tricks of the trade.

In this class, you will learn tricks to route complex pipe runs,

more-efficient ways to develop platforms and structures, tricks

for equipment creation using Inventor software for simplifying,

and finally some pipe support placing tricks using Point Filters.

This class is for those fairly new to Plant 3D.

Why are YOU here?

At AU 2013, the first Plant 3D Tricks of the Trade

class (PD2297) was instructed by me. You can find

it here: http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/classes-on-

demand/class-catalog/2013/plant-design-

Complex Pipe Routing

Trick #1: Connecting Two Lines at a

Tee from a Given Angle

Delete Pipe

Draw Lines and Trim

2016 must use “Project” “UCS”

2017 just trims it beautifully

Use “Line to Pipe” Routing

Page 8: PT21675: AutoCAD Plant 3D Tricks of the Trade 2

Complex Pipe Routing

Trick #2: Resting Pipe on Steel or Concrete

Pad (2 methods)

Using “Toggle Elevation Snap”

ID the TOS

Drag Pipe to Elevation

Change “Set Routing Line” to “BOP”

Change “Plane” to Horizontal

Using Point Filters

Drag Pipe to PF Elevation

Change “Set Routing Line” to “BOP”

Change “Plane” to Horizontal

Complex Pipe Routing

Trick #3: Routing from Pumps with

Eccentric Reducers

Place Eccentric Reducers first.

Do not place Flanges first.

Route Pipe from one ER to the

other ER

Route Branch from “+” of Pipe

Complex Pipe Routing

Trick #4: Rolled Offset Piping

Draw with Line, PolyLine or

3DPoly

3DPoly/Polyline to the

Location of the Rolled Offset

Line for Rolled Offset Box

3DPoly/Polyline to Complete

the Route.

Line-To-Pipe, Select the Poly’s

and the Corner-to-Corner Line

of the Rolled Offset

Structure and Platform Creation Tricks

Trick #5 and #6: Member and Footing

Placement

Using Line Model to Place Members

(PLANTSTEELSETREP)

Trim/Miter Before Copying Members – Save

yourself some time and clicks!

BONUS TRICK - Explode Method for

Member Placement

Place Footings with Spacebar or

Copy/Array

Structure and Platform Creation Tricks

Trick #7 and #8: Stair and Handrail Placement

Using Line Model (PLANTSTEELSETREP)

Sketch out Landings and Stair Points with

Line Command

Place Handrail while in Line Model

Turning Off Kick Plate

Equipment Creation Tricks

Trick #9: Vendor Equipment – the “Box” Method

Create a Small Box (Modeling Tab)

Convert Box to Plant 3D Equipment

(PLANTEQUIPMENTCONVERT)

Attach Vendor 3D Model to Box

Place Nozzles on Attached Equipment

Replace Modified Vendor Equipment by

Detaching and Attaching

Relocate Modified Nozzles

Equipment Creation Tricks

Trick #10: Vendor Equipment Simplify

/ Shrinkwrap in Inventor

Open Vendor Model in Inventor

Suppress Unneeded Solids

Create Envelope Solids for

Complex Shapes

Shrinkwrap into an IPT file to

Reduce File Size.

BIM Exchange into an ADSK File

Convert Inventor Equipment (PLANTINVENTOREQUIPMENTCONVERT)

Equipment Creation Tricks

Trick #10: Vendor Equipment Simplify / Shrinkwrap in Inventor

For an example of the file size differences you can experience by

simplifying or shrinkwrapping in Inventor, see the file sizes created after

saving the IPT and BIM EXCHANGE to an ADSK file.

Pipe Support Placing Trick

Trick #11: Pipe Support Placing Trick –

Placing Supports with the Toggle Lock

Point of Support and Point Filters

Place the Hanger using a POINT FILTER and MIDPOINT

to the Horizontal Beam

Select the TOGGLE LOCK POINT OF SUPPORT MODE

Adjust the Hanger to the B.O.S.

Select the MOVE PART Grip and type P or select “coPy”

from the command line options

Right-click and select POINT FILTER and NODE of the

existing Hanger, then select anywhere on 2nd pipe

Continue “coPy” process with POINT FILTER and NODE

until all hangers are placed.

Bonus Tricks

Trick #12:

PLANTFITTINGSTICKFACTOR

PLANTFITTINGSTICKFACTOR is the

distance that you can have your

cursor away from the pipe while

moving an inline asset until it comes

off the pipe line. The available ranges

are 0” to 10”. In this example, the

setting is 4”.

Bonus Tricks

Trick #13: PLANTGRIPEDITMODE

PLANTGRIPEDITMODE allows you to

change how inline assets move with

the model. If set to pipeSegment,

you can only move the object along

the single pipe segment that it

currently exists on and not to other

pipe lines in the model. If set to

pipeLine, you can move the inline

asset along the existing pipe or to any

other pipe in the model.

Bonus Tricks

Trick #14: PLANTFITTINGADD

PLANTFITTINGADD will allow you to

place a spec component. You can

keep the Dynamic Toolpalette closed

if you choose to use this command

instead.

You do not need to be in the process

of routing a line to run this command.

It will open the following dialog box:

Bonus Tricks

Trick #15: SELECTIONEFFECT

SELECTIONEFFECT turns on (1) and

off (0) the glowing highlight of selected

objects.

Turning off Hardware Acceleration will

disable this glowing highlight of

selected objects.

Bonus Tricks

Trick #16: SELECTIONEFFECTCOLOR

SELECTIONEFFECTCOLOR

changes the color of the glowing

highlight of selected objects.

0 – Light Blue 5 – Blue

1 – Red 6 – Magenta

2 – Yellow 7 – White

3 – Green 8 – Dark Gray

4 – Cyan 9 – Light Gray

Trick #17: ADDING COMMON COMMANDS TO

TOOL PALETTE

Create new Tab in Dynamic Tool Palette

Add Commands to CUI

Drag Commands to Tool Palette

Test Commands!
