We appreciated the huge turnout of parents, family members, ex-parents, friends, staff and other locals. Over $12,000 was raised. 29 tables were sold and from what I saw everyone had a fabulous night. The funds raised are to be used to purchase science kits, discovery time equipment, an outdoor table tennis table and a defibrillator – something our local community can also use. A big thank you to all PTC members, friends and family members who all helped with the planning, the setup, the clean-up and the running of the quiz night. Murray Leaning, the quiz master, was terrific as usual. There were some 100+ auction items – many thanks to our very generous sponsors (including many families). Special thanks to our two PTC co-chairs, Rochelle Krammer and Coral Smith, who did a fantastic job of overseeing the quiz evening! ART ASSEMBLY

Last Friday the school gathered for a celebration of visual arts. The classes produced and shared a huge range of fabulous artworks based on our DISASTERS theme. They also had a lot of fun singing (thanks Mrs James) and jump-jamming (thanks Mrs Schwass)!

PARKING HABITS and SAFETY

1. We are very fortunate the ‘Church on the Hill’ allow us to their carpark before school and after school. It is private property. Of huge concern is a few car drivers that park on the grass bank. Please respect the ‘Church on the Hill’ property. One parent told me she thought it was ok if I hadn’t put the orange cones out. The answer is PLEASE, DON’T PARK ON THE GRASS.

2. A number of parents are flouting the laws surrounding The P2 signs (parking for 2 minutes only) outside the main office between 8:30 – 9:30am and 2:30 – 3:30pm. A number of parents are parking there and leaving their cars unattended whilst they go into the school with their children (before school) or to pick up their children from their classrooms at the end of the day. This is illegal if it’s for longer than 2 minutes.

HEADLICE

Headlice appears to be quite an issue at present. One of our Public Health Nurses sent this statement to me plus I’ve included one of their newsletters on the matter: ‘They are able to be treated and eradicated, however, this process can take some time and patience is required. Some children are never bothered by headlice at all, whereas others often seem to have an ongoing problem. There are a few points to remember about headlice:

The cycle of the lice is 10 days, so one treatment is not enough

A female louse lays about 7-10 eggs each night, eggs take 9-10 days to hatch and a louse can live for 35-40 days

Do not treat ‘in case’, only treat if lice are found or eggs are seen within 1 cm of the scalp. Once the headlice treatment is successful, the use of a few drops of Tea Tree Oil in the final rinse after normal hair-washing is an excellent preventative – headlice do not like the smell of this oil.’

HEAD LICE UPDATE from

Once again there seems to be a head lice population explosion and parents are finding them harder to get rid of. Some parents and teachers are getting them too. If your children do come home with head lice it is a nuisance but not a disaster. They don’t carry disease and have been living on humans for thousands of years. When head lice shampoos came on the market it was assumed that they finish off head lice for good. But they are survivors and it is probably no easier to eliminate head lice than sandflies or mosquitoes (they too need the protein in our blood to lay eggs). There is evidence in a New Zealand survey of an approximate 34% rehatch rate following all treatments presently on our market.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Brush hair every evening before bed. Make this a habit like cleaning teeth. Head lice lay their eggs when the head is still, so they lay mostly at night. A firm bristled brush injures the head lice so that they are unable to lay eggs. Brush with the head hanging down and for 100 strokes of the brush.

Fine tooth combing. This is often easier to do when the hair is wet and covered in any conditioner. Comb hair into sections clearing the lice out after each stroke. Do every 3-4 days for a minimum of 3 weeks. This is a stand-alone treatment. Nit combs can be obtained through your Public Health Nurse or at the Pharmacy. Conditioner makes combing easier and slows the head lice down. Remember to rinse the comb after each combing of hair sections (i.e. strands of hair) otherwise you risk putting them back through the hair. If you don’t have conditioner, simply wet the hair with water. You may or may not like to wash the conditioner out after use (personal choice).

ALTERNATIVES

Robicomb. This comb operates with a battery and kills or stuns lice. Use on dry hair. This is a stand-alone treatment also. Use daily for 3 weeks. Some families on a low income may get help to purchase this from Work and Income (DWI).

Tea Tree or Rosemary Oil. A few drops of one of these oils in the rinsing water when using normal shampoo deter head lice. They act like an insect repellent.

- Tea tree shampoo / conditioners may dry the hair out.

- There is risk of burning the skin if the tea tree is dropping on it.

- Ratio for rinsing water is 5 drops oil to 1 litre water after shampooing.
