Paws a While with Shakira
Howdy doody Neighbours! I couldn’t help but be involved
in the Clean-Up Day last Saturday….after all, there were
trucks and skips all over MY patch. Of course, I had to give it
the ol’ once over….twice!! Had to make sure all health and
safety checks were in place. How do you like the picture of
my fine Silver Self checking out the scrap metal truck?
Are you sick of the rain yet? I was hoping to catch some rays
over the school holidays, but sadly it has poured relentlessly.
Another thing that is relentless is my nails don’t stop grow-
ing. I like to stick them into unsuspecting humans to keep
them in line ~ especially if they’re not paying enough
attention to me. If my nails aren’t given a wee trim now and
then, I have to take the matter into my own paws. That’s
easy as I simply love using a scratching post. (Sometimes, I
use the school trees, but please don’t tell Marcel LOL.) It
keeps my claws really healthy. Plus I love to tone and s-t-r-e-
t-c-h, s-t-r-e-t-c-h and tone. It is fabulous for my body and
reduces any stress I may be feeling. It’s like having my own
total kitty gym!! Ah, all this exercise is making me very
sleepy.... must away for a cat-nap… Shakira
PART 01: On Sunday June 9, a promotional tournament will be hosted by the Brockville Indoors’ Club to mark the 50th
Anniversary of the Club’s founding. Depending on
registration numbers this Tournament will be held
either at the Brockville
School Hall (12 registra-
tions) or at the Otago In-
door Bowls’ Association
Stadium (32 registrations)
on Victoria Road. As Club
Secretary, Mrs. Heather
Gould (pictured right, with
George, her husband, on
their wedding day in 1959)
says, “We don’t really
need money—we need
people to learn and play
the game.” Gone are the days when the Club had
upwards of 40 members—now, membership is
down to 7 and there is a desperate need for new
players. In the next newsletter (#17), “Part 02” will
give a brief history of the Club. In the meantime, if you want to find out more, please give Heather a call on 4763775.

PHARMACY AS A CAREER
Thank You to Hasan and Adam of the Brockville
Pharmacy for their time on these questions.
Can You please tell us a little of Your family back-ground?
HASAN ABDEL-RAHMAN (pictured left) My name is
Hasan but I’m also known as Robert. I was born in Kuwait
and moved to New Zealand when I was 12 because of the
Gulf War. I studied pharmacy at Otago (University) after
high-school (OBHS).
ADAM (Ahmad) HAWWARI My mother (Delber) is Turkish and Egyptian. Through my father,
I am Palestinian and Saudi Arabian. We are all originally Palestinian but because of war, we
have moved around that area of the world. Roula (Adam’s wife) is Palestinian too but she was
born in Lebanon. My parents came to Dunedin in 1996 and I came out here in 1997 from
Jordan, after I had completed most of Bachelor’s in Pharmacy from there. At Otago
(University) I had to re-start Pharmacy studies (from Year 02), which is normally a 4-year
course. After that I worked as a locum and in pharmacies to complete my registration. I then
went to Australia (where Roula and Adam met) and returned to Dunedin in 2010.
Why Pharmacy as a career? And how did You choose Brockville as a place in which to run a
business?
HASAN Pharmacy is a very rewarding and exciting career. You get to deal with many
different people. Every day is different which keeps your working day exciting and fresh.
ADAM Choosing Brockville was just by chance in 2011 when I was talking with Richard
Moore who came and inspected a building in which I was working. He told me about this
vacant business in Brockville and from April, 2011 it took me 6 months to make up my mind
and complete the required paper-work. We then opened the Brockville Pharmacy in February
2012.
HASAN Adam wanted to spend more time looking after his Mum and therefore needed
someone he could trust to manage the place.
What are Your hopes for Your family and business in the next five years?
HASAN For my family to be happy and healthy. For the business becomes a thriving one
which provides customers with the best service possible
. Continued
ADAM For my family to stay healthy, especially my
Mother Delber (who is very ill at the moment.) I think
the business will flourish. We, Hasan and I, will build
a strong partnership. We won’t give up on remaining
here in Brockville.
As a result of Your family and working life, what
advice would You want to pass onto Your children?
HASAN Treat others the way you want to be treated.
ADAM Work is important, you have to work to live. I
hope that they will learn from me the importance of
responsibility and respect. Don’t be arrogant but be
respectful The more you respect customers the more
they will respect you back, even those who do not
respect you to start with.

Volunteers includ-
ing Shevaughn

their truck’s clutch
was damaged.
