• February to October 2015: the first comprehensive

survey of cities committed to the Ten Principles.

• Goal – understand the challenges cities are

encountering, as well as the policies and practices

they can implement to address those challenges.

• Survey covered 157 challenges under the 22 topic

areas in three main categories – City Development,

City Sustainability and City Governance.

• Reports prepared for 19 cities, some of which

submitted as Communication on Engagement to the

Global Compact.

• Phase 2 of City Scan under development focusing on

17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Transforming a city with business led

collaborative economic development -

Milwaukee Manufacturing city on the Great Lakes - depressed economy & polluted waters

Developed an economic focus on water led by business – water services,

technology and water science research

The Water Council formed – business (CEOs), government (mayor on board),

academia (University Presidents), water utilities

Developed Global Water Centre (former brownfield site & old warehouse) -

now business incubator inc. global organisations, universities – area is now a

desirable mixed precinct and water demonstration site

Global Attraction Water Innovation – Leeuwarden

Working to economically revitalise, increase employment and stimulate

business in Leeuwarden and build community awareness and a culture

of water in the region.

Three pillars to project:

– innovative water technology,

– international collaboration,

– involvement of citizens and developing water awareness.

Multi-sectoral Partnership, includes:

Municipality of Leeuwarden, Wetsus, CEW/CiVwater, Province of

Fryslân, Wetterskip Fryslân, Vitens and the Water Alliance

From the Ten Principles Kawasaki City has developed the

Kawasaki Compact, city government collaborating with private

sector and citizen groups.

It is composed of:

• a Business Compact with nine principles and

• a Citizen Compact (with three declarations) - citizen groups to

work with the Kawasaki City Government and business partners

to conserve the environment and support the climate change

policy

• Corporations include Fujitsu, Tokyo Gas, Tokyo Electric and the

Asahi Kasei Corporation
