First in Europe: Bilfinger Mars Offshore’s serial offshore wind foundations plant

Some 5,000 wind turbines are expected to provide Europe with sustainable electricity ten years from now. A great many of them will be grouped together in wind farms in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. All of them will require sturdy foundations to keep them steady

during the type of circumstances they are built for: strong winds.

Strategic location

In Szczecin (the capital of West Pomeranian region), near the Baltic

coast, Bilfinger Mars Offshore has found the perfect location to produce those foundations – within short shipping distance of the North Sea as well as the Baltic Sea area. The plant will be the first in Europe to serially produce turbine foundations. Bilfinger Mars Offshore is a special-purpose joint venture between Polish state-owned Closed-End Investment Fund MARS and Bilfinger Marine and Offshore Systems GmbH.

Large-scale project and plant

Starting from mid-2015, Bilfinger Mars Offshore’s new facility will be manufacturing jackets, monopiles, transition pieces and other foundation-related steel structures. The plant’s production lines were designed

foundation for new solutions in food processing and packaging technology in this market. It acquired the factory in Gornji Milanovac in 1997, and stepped up production ever since.

Good cooperation

The new 5.500 m2 warehouse with office block was completed in December 2014. Project Manager Mr. Miroslav Dmitrovic explains Tebodin’s involvement. ‘Tetra Pak needed to solve storage space issues. The new building was constructed within budget and on time, without compromising the quality of execution. What really underlined this project was the cooperation we developed with Tetra Pak’s internal engineering department, where our client focus and can-do attitude really came to light’.

Tetra Pak is the world's leading food processing and packaging solutions company and is one of three companies in the Tetra Laval Group – a private group originating in Sweden. The other two companies are DeLaval and Sidel. Tetra Laval is headquartered in Switzerland. Since the start in 1951 Tetra Pak has taken pride in providing the best possible processing and packaging solutions for food. Working closely with its customers and suppliers, Tetra Pak provides safe, innovative and environmentally sound products that each day meet the needs of hundreds of millions of people in more than 170 countries around the world.

Top performance under pressureWHEN WORK IS NEEDED ON STRATEGIC INFRASTRUCTURE – A COUNTRY’S GAS GRID AND CROSS-BORDER TRANSIT PIPELINES – QUALITY IS EVERYTHING. THE CZECH GRID OPERATOR NET4GAS, TAKING NO CHANCES, LOOKED FOR EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE, BOTH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL. THE OPTIMUS PROJECT FOR THE MODERNIZATION OF THEIR COMPRESSOR STATIONS WENT TO TEBODIN.

NET4GAS operates pipelines for international transit and national transmission of natural gas with a total length of more than 3,000 kilometres.

Compressor stations

The required gas pressure in the pipelines is provided at compressor stations. Of the four existing ones, NET4GAS wanted to put two out of operation while giving the other two, CS Kourim and CS Breclav, a major upgrade to meet the latest safety standards. Features to be added included remote control and advanced emergency depressurizing technology. During the entire process, however, gas transit was to continue.

Project Manager for NET4GAS, Ivo Komorous, is working together with Tebodin in the Czech Republic on the conceptual and initial design. ‘Tebodin´s track record included

several similar projects and extensive experience with the oil and gas industry.’

Perfectionist

The contract with the client was signed before Christmas 2013 and work started in January 2014. The stage of conceptual design was finished in June 2014 and initial design before Christmas 2014. Tebodin’s 20-strong team was headed by Mr. Tomáš Kucera. ’For us NET4GAS is an interesting client to work for, given its strategic importance. Mr. Ivo Komorous wants nothing less than perfection, but is able to appreciate good work, and is always open for discussion – in other words a true professional. Everyone at NET4GAS was friendly and helpful.’

Tebodin’s deliverables to date comprise the conceptual and initial design,

various reports (e.g. the energy audit), layout drawings, documentation of structural objects and process systems, and supporting documents like HAZOP. As Tebodin has met all the client’s specs and deadlines, NET4GAS is naturally keen to keep the team

Acquisition strengthens Tebodin in Saudi Arabia

WITH THE ACQUISITION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING FIRM EMCAN IN DECEMBER 2014, TEBODIN IS SET TO STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND ITS POSITION IN FAST DEVELOPING SAUDI MARKETS.

Tebodin & Partners Saudi was established in 2010 in Jeddah, the second city in Saudi Arabia after the capital Riyadh. With a population of over five million, Jeddah has the largest port on the Red Sea and is an important commercial hub. Tebodin recently moved to a larger office to support the expected growth in industrial buildings, logistics, infrastructure, oil & gas, and other markets.

‘Our new office will accommodate the anticipated growth we are aiming for in 2015’, says Tebodin director Saudi Arabia Mr. Haytham El Rez. ‘As a result of this acquisition, Emcan engineers and architects have joined us, bringing along a healthy ongoing workload.’

As a fully registered local engineering consultancy firm, Tebodin focuses on design and construction management of industrial buildings including

factories, logistics facilities, distribution centers, and cold stores, in addition to oil & gas projects.

Mr. El Rez: ‘We have registered Tebodin with local authorities and major developers such as Emaar. Soon, we will be pre-qualified by the Economic Cities Authority, the Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu, etc. In addition, we are seeking a geographical expansion into the country’s central and eastern regional markets, and offering clients the full advantage of the international Tebodin office network.’

C2C certificate for Dopper OriginalDURING A CONGRESS FOR SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION IN THE NETHERLANDS, DOPPER RECEIVED A BRONZE CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFICATE FOR THEIR DOPPER ORIGINAL. THIS CERTIFICATION CONFIRMS THAT THE DOPPER ORIGINAL IS THE FIRST RESPONSIBLY AND SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED WATER BOTTLE, WHICH ALSO CONTRIBUTES TO THE WELFARE OF PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. TEBODIN HAS BEEN AN INDISPENSABLE PARTNER IN THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS.

Dopper Original founder Merijn Everaarts: ‘I believe that business with the goal of getting rich no longer suits the challenges of our world today. The focus in companies should be on sustainable and social solutions for products and services. The Cradle to Cradle certification of the Dopper Original fits in with our goal to contribute to a better world.’

The water bottle Dopper Original has been Cradle to Cradle certified because:- there are no toxic or prohibited

substances (such as Bisphenol A) used in the bottle;

- the thermoplastics of which the bottle is made, are 100% recyclable;

- is produced in a climate-neutral fashion, with responsible water and energy use;

- old Doppers can be handed in at Dopper or at special plastics recycling points;

- the bottle makes a major contribution to reducing the global plastics problem;

- Dopper Foundation contributes to drinking water projects worldwide.

With their reusable water bottle, Dopper wants to contribute to the reduction of the ‘plastic soup’ in

The core of the Cradle to Cradle principle is that at the end of the lifespan of one product, all materials it contains can be usefully deployed for the same or another product. No quality loss may occur, and all residual materials must be recyclable or environmentally neutral. The checks during the Cradle to Cradle certification process include the material (health and reusability), the use of renewable energy in the production process, responsible water use and the contribution to social justice.

TANATEX Chemicals is a worldwide leading developer and manufacturer of innovative processing solutions for the textile and carpet industry. Its products are used throughout the textile production cycle, from pre-treatment to dying, printing and coating. Established in the Netherlands over 50 years ago, the company now has a worldwide presence.

Meeting demand regional market

In reply to a growing demand from the Asian textile industry, TANATEX has opened its first Asian production facility in the Hemaraj Industrial Estate on the Eastern seaboard in October 2014. In addition to its existing sales offices, TANATEX now has a target production capacity in the region of 12,000 tons per year, which will enable the company to meet regional demands in a time and cost efficient manner. Production in the almost exclusively Thai-staffed facility was started up successfully over the course of months leading up to the opening. The high-tech facility boasts

computer-controlled production and environment-friendly measures such as wastewater treatment before disposal.

TANATEX’s design partner in the preparation and construction of the Thai factory was Tebodin. Utilizing the two companies’ presence in both Asia and the Netherlands, the client and the engineer have worked closely together from concept stage to completion of construction in August 2014. ‘The general view of our management is that Tebodin has played a crucial part in the success of the undertaking’, says

Mr. Paul Oude Lenferink (on the picture second last from the left), who managed the project on behalf of TANATEX. ‘We thank them for a smooth process, all within time and budget.’

The Thai-Dutch connection

Three Tebodin teams contributed to this achievement, explains Project Manager Mr. Taviphark Niwatwong (on the picture first from the left). ‘From concept design in the Netherlands to detailed design in Vietnam and value engineering in our office in Bangkok. Furthermore, we provided procurement, construction management and value engineering to reduce costs at the post-design stages. It has been a huge benefit to the overall project that both companies had the Thai-Dutch connection. We look forward to further collaboration with TANATEX and other clients in the Thai market.’

Pharma welcomes ‘teaming’

‘TEAMING SETS US APART FROM THE COMPETITION AND IS APPRECIATED BY OUR PHARMACEUTICAL CLIENTS,’ SAYS MR. NIEK DE KONING, TEBODIN DIRECTOR GLOBAL PHARMACEUTICAL PROJECTS. TOGETHER WITH MS. LINDA LAVEN OF LAVEN COUNSELLING & CONSULTING, HE HAS IMPLEMENTED THE TEAMING CONCEPT IN MANY TEBODIN OFFICES AROUND THE GLOBE.

‘In developing, the participants truly and deeply experience sharing expertise,’ says Ms. Laven, as expert in global learning organizations. The end-result is the highest service level to existing and new clients in the pharmaceutical industry.

First Time Right

Teaming is using fluid groups of experts, from different backgrounds and places, to deal with new issues and opportunities as they arise throughout a project. Teaming is the answer to developments in the pharmaceutical market worldwide. Mr. Niek de Koning: ‘We focus on five markets: active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), bio-pharmaceuticals, finished products, medical devices and animal health. Rapid development of brand-new medicines, especially in Asia, requires the best technology and reliable services. It needs to be First Time Right.’

‘Trust is essential for our clients. With teaming, we can serve a great number of prospects, because not all experts need to be on one location at the same time; they share knowhow and expertise. Pharmaceutical companies like our approach and results, and welcome us with open arms.’

Smart learning

Teaming is a new way of working, and needs intensive training in both the ‘hardware’ related to project management and ‘software’ such as effective communication across cultural differences. Ms. Linda Laven: ‘It requires a leadership mind set with interpersonal skills to negotiate disagreements, to get to

solutions. People need to feel that asking questions does not mean you do not know, but that you want to grow.’

Making a difference

Mr. de Koning: ‘Linda’s role is essential, developing sound programs together, prior to our visits, to achieve maximum commitment. We started from scratch and now established self-performing organizations. We have pharma experts in our offices in Europe and Asia-Pacific, ready for emerging markets. Our people are enthusiastic.’

‘This is the fourth year we are working together. Our clients believe Tebodin is making a difference, they see opportunities and create pilot projects. This is a breakthrough and we are ready to go ahead with full speed.’

EU targets and mature technology create new opportunities in advanced biofuels

THE EUROPEAN UNION’S ENERGY TARGETS STATE THAT BY 2020, AT LEAST 2.5 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL FUEL CONSUMPTION MUST BE BIOFUELS PRODUCED FROM NON-FOOD FEEDSTOCKS. COMBINING TWO TRIED AND TESTED PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES HOLDS GREAT PROMISE FOR THESE ADVANCED BIOFUELS.

Advanced or next-generation biofuels do not require raw materials that could also be used in food or feed production. Instead, they are made of woody residues from agriculture and forestry, non-food crops or waste materials. The OECD expects global demand for advanced biofuels in 2020 to be around

The biochemical route is of some commercial interest in small-scale operations, but it is a slow process that yields only ethanol and cannot convert lignin, which constitutes up to 35 percent of the biomass. The ultimate process design is a combination of fluidized bed gasification and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. In between these two process steps, the syngas is cleaned with venturi and amine scrubbing, and LO-CAT desulfurization.

Flexible and mature

The overall design is chosen for its feed and product flexibility, and its technological maturity. Gasification technology is widely used in coal-fired

power plants. The gas-to-liquid Fischer-Tropsch process is used by oil companies Sasol, Shell, Qatar Petroleum and Petronas. Mr. Bosch: ‘Feed and product flexibility provides a huge advantage in the very dynamic biofuels market. Modern gasification technology can convert all kinds of non-food biofeedstock, and FT-synthesis can produce methane, gasoline, diesel and kerosene.’ Minimum plant size

Business cases have been analyzed to establish the minimum plant size for an economically healthy operation. Without subsidies, a plant should

convert at least 1.5 million tons of waste material into 220 million liters of biofuel per year. The expected EU subsidies could greatly reduce the required plant size. Proven technology is available to economically produce advanced biofuels. Construction of the first production facility based on comparable technology will be completed this year in Sweden.

Strong bonds with Rütgers Resins

WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS MOVING OUT OF THE COMMON USED SITE, RÜTGERS RESINS NEEDED TO OVERHAUL PART OF THEIR PRODUCTION PLANT IN UITHOORN, THE NETHERLANDS. RÜTGERS HAS ASKED TEBODIN TO SORT OUT THE TANGLE OF ENGINEERING PROJECTS INVOLVED, UNDER A FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT RUNNING FOR A YEAR FROM DECEMBER 2014.

International bonds

Rütgers Resins is part of Rütgers Novares GmbH; a high-tech producer of resins for the adhesive, coating, rubber and printing ink industries as well as modifiers for high-performance coating systems and applications in the paper industry. Rütgers Novares GmbH is based in Germany and is a division of the Rütgers group with facilities in Canada, China, Russia and several European countries.

Tebodin has previously been in contact with Rütgers in Russia. The partnership in Uithoorn started when Rütgers’ firefighting facilities were outsourced to the municipal fire department, and the company asked Tebodin for consultancy on the requirements.

Complex challenge

This framework contract came about because the Rütgers plant in Uithoorn shares a site with Koppers tar refinery. Now that Koppers is shutting down their plant, Rütgers cannot produce without a number of their mutual utilities. They need to organize these themselves. Executing the many identified projects in a short period of time and at a location with limited room to manoeuvre is a logistic challenge in both project and construction management.

150 billion liters per year. Until recently there was no mature production method, and the current output is still negligible compared to the first generation biofuels.

Two routes

Tebodin examined the prospects for the best available technologies, explains process engineer Mr. Casper Bosch. ‘There are two different routes to turn biomass into high-grade engine fuel. The biochemical route relies on turning biomass into sugars, and on fermentation to produce ethanol. The thermo-chemical route converts biomass via thermal cracking into syngas, which can be synthesized into a range of hydrocarbon products.’

Safety leadership training accountable for safety

THE MANAGER AND THE TEAM LEADER ARE VITAL IN INSPIRING EMPLOYEES TO A HIGHER LEVEL OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY, WHICH MEANS THAT THEY MUST APPLY GOOD LEADERSHIP ATTRIBUTES ON A DAILY BASIS. HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARENESS ENABLES THEM TO SEND STAFF HOME SAFELY, RETAIN THEIR STAFF, DRIVE THE BUSINESS EFFICIENTLY, PRODUCTIVELY AND PROFITABLY.

Senior leaders can delegate some of these tasks to their sub-ordinates, but they cannot delegate safety to someone else or postpone it to another day. Everyone is accountable for their safety and senior leaders are ultimately accountable for everyone in their team. It is therefore vitally important for leaders to give safety top priority in the business objectives.

Tebodin recognizes that leadership is important in the creation of a culture that supports and promotes a strong safety belief. To boost this attitude and culture Safety Leadership Training for senior leaders, managers and team leaders are being rolled out across all of Tebodin. Recently, training sessions took place in the Middle East (Abu Dhabi). From managing director to team leader level, delegates found the training very useful for their day-to-day work. In the training it was explained that clear and visible

Down-to-earth designs for the complex offshore market

‘Offshore is not for the faint-hearted. It is big and complex, both technological and business-wise – an exciting market,’ says Mr. Maurice Houben, Manager Business Development & Sales in the Netherlands. For the last two years, Mr. Houben has been driving Tebodin’s offshore activities in North West Europe: ‘We have decades of experience with smart, cost-efficient solutions for onshore companies. Offshore can now gather the fruits of that experience. We can deliver power to counter adverse winds, such as the low oil price.’

Oil & Gas DNA

Since its foundation in 1945, Tebodin has been working in onshore oil and gas, with decades of affiliation with NAM and Gasunie in the Netherlands. In the last decades, the company has also worked on major projects in the Middle East, Germany and Norway.

Mr. Houben: ‘Oil and gas are in our DNA. Now onshore sources are drying up, we have to think about what to do with all that expertise. Therefore we are looking how we can contribute to the offshore market. As a newcomer, we are scrutinized and need to establish credibility, sharing our knowledge and showing our track record. Offshore however is not entirely new to us: in the Middle East we are already engineering topside modifications of platforms, while in Western Europe we are doing consultancy on safety for Shell and

others. Recently, we scored a key engineering contract for Bluewater in the Netherlands.’

Exciting times

Offshore offers interesting opportunities, according to Mr. Houben: ‘Investors are worried about the low oil price, but exploration companies look at long-term developments. And it is not all negative: the shake-up is creating new possibilities, with market players seeking out partnerships and reconsidering the fundaments of their business. Also, decommissioning is getting more important. These are exciting times.’

The Dutch approach

‘We are ambitious, optimistic people, always looking for possibilities in any situation – especially in a crisis,’ says Mr. Houben: ‘Our strong point is designs for cost-efficiency. We call it the Tebodin approach: down-to-earth

designs which are simply good and safe, without all the trimmings.’

‘The chemical processes are basically the same onshore and offshore, but of course the offshore industry works under specific circumstances, with restrictions in space, weight and logistical movement. Frankly, our engineers, with all their onshore experience, are eager for these challenges. They are already versed in intensive teamwork and 3D design. For new challenges, such as subsea structures, we will work with knowledgable partners from our network, offering a broad scope of services for complex projects for the offshore market.’

Ebola, named after a Congo River tributary, was first discovered in 1976. In February 2014, the long expected big outbreak came to three of the poorest countries in the world: Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. Because of these countries’ limited means and ineffective healthcare systems, the epidemic has quickly developed into a humanitarian crisis.

Orphaned children

According to the World Health Organization, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest, most complex and severe ever seen. Apart from the acute medical crisis and thousands of orphaned children, there are collapsing economies to deal with.

Millions of people are affected as ordinary life comes to a standstill. The fear of contagion causes transports to be cancelled, markets to be closed, and harvests to fail, thus setting the stage for a disastrous famine. The Ebola epidemic is disrupting entire societies and will continue to claim many victims even after the outbreak has been contained. At this point, medical care, emergency food supplies and hygiene education have the highest priority.

Tebodin donated to Giro 555, the disaster relief account of the Dutch foundation of Cooperating Aid Organizations. They set up isolation and treatment centers and provide a range of the most needed materials, including medicines, protective clothing, disinfectants, hygiene kits,

incinerators and means of transport for infected people. Besides medical care, the foundation also provides food and cares for orphans.

Commitment

Local healthcare systems are failing as many doctors and nurses have themselves become victims. Pregnant women and people with ordinary sickness avoid hospitals and clinics, and regular vaccination programs have been stopped. Much help is and will be needed, stressed Mrs. Titia Wenneker of Giro 555: ‘Your engagement and the commitment of so many people have made a heartwarming impression on us. The ten aid organizations behind Giro 555 will do everything in their power to stop the Ebola disaster in West Africa.’

Tebodin was awarded an EPCm (Engineering, Procurement and Construction management) contract for this project. ‘Tebodin is the best design company for our projects. The Tebodin team deserved to get this job’, said Mr. Tom Atle Farstad, Project Manager of Jotun Myanmar.

The scope of work in this project consists of permitting, basic and detailed design, procurement, and project- and construction management. The project started at the end of November 2014 and is due to be completed in September 2016. Tebodin’s offices in Myanmar and Ha Noi, Vietman are teaming up to execute this project. The Ha Noi team
