The 2010 MEINL Drumfest was once again an incredible expe-rience. I was able to make new friends and check out some in-credible performances and it was yet again a weekend filled with great fun, great food and fantastic drumming. AMAZING is all I have to say!! Those 3 days were life changing. I‘ve never met more passionate people about
what they do & believe in. I‘m a firm believer that ‘Vision & Victory flows from Heart to Head to Hands‘ meaning:
for Mr. Meinl himself to personally speak positively into & about my life, says a lot about who he is. Which is
then translated through the ENTIRE MEINL family. That is rare & AMAZING. BIG thanks to my bros
whom I shared the stage with & also to my 2 partners in crime lol, Chris Brewer & Norbert Saemann.
Priceless! Only 100 drummers were allowed into this exclu-sive bass & groove workshop hosted by Benny Greb and bassist Frank Itt. More than three hours of hands-on mate-rial taught by these two greats. Definitely one of the highlights of the festival.
benny gReb:
The MEINL Drum Festival is really a special event and I al-ways mark the date far in ad-vance in my calendar even if, on that particular year, I don’t have the honor of being se-lected to perform. Along with it being one of the best drum festivals on the planet with a relaxed vibe and killer players, organized by the people I love, MEINL opens their doors and lets everyone see how its cym-bals are made.

The cathedral of Mexico City.
After the huge success of our first international MEINL Drum Festival in 2009 in Moscow, we have decided to host an international event every other year. The choice has been made and the metrop-olis known as Mexico City will see the next inter-national MEINL Drum Festival on July 13, 2011.
tising concepts, and other lo-gistical issues regarding the festival.
Last but not least, I even found time to visit a museum in downtown Mexico City about Mexico’s Aztec history before heading to the airport to catch my flight back to Germany. It’s amazing how many activities you can squeeze into just 48 hours.
I got a great vibe from Mexico City and I am confident that our second international MEINL Drum Festival will be an unfor-gettable experience for me, the artists, and for all the drum-mers in Mexico who will at-tend. Sure, it’s the world’s largest city and the traffic was worse than I’ve ever experi-enced anywhere else before. But all of that just adds to the thrill of anticipation of the whole experience. I love it.

All I’ve heard about Mexico City is that it’s a huge city with non-stop crazy traffic. On Sep-tember 20, 2010 I was about to find out if that was indeed the case when I took an 11 ½ hour nonstop flight from Frankfurt to Mexico City. Time is al-ways crucial when I organize our drum festival. So I thought it’s best to be safe rather than sorry and start getting things on the right track almost a year in advance. After arriving I met my host for the next two days; Juan-Luis Gonzales who works for our Mexican dis-tributor Gonher distribuidora. Together we will organize this groundbreaking event.
In only two days we managed to check out three possible venues in three different parts of this gigantic city. We also had a very intensive meeting at Gonher’s office where we brainstormed about line-up ideas, promotion and adver-

Beginning in 2001, every Thursday evening at the Musikmesse in Frank-
furt Germany is reserved for a special industry event: The Musikmesse International Press Award (m.i.p.a.) cer-emony – and that’s not just because of the free food and drinks! It’s actually one of the most significant events of our industry. This award is con-sidered to be the Grammy of the Musical Instrument/Pro Audio industry.
More than 100 specialized mu-sic magazines from all over the world vote for what they con-sider to be the best of recently released instruments. It’s an industry spanning award for more than 40 different instru-ment and audio categories. One of the categories the jury votes for is “best cymbals.”
The m.i.p.a. award is the Grammy of the Musical Instrument industry.
Needless to say, all product managers, engineers, inventors, publicists, and other company representatives eagerly antici-pate the list of nominees. The winner is then announced at the aforementioned ceremony and presented with the m.i.p.a. award. As far as my calendar is concerned, Thursday evening at Musikmesse is a set ap-pointment year after year.
“We have earned the most m.i.p.a. awards of all brands.”
Since the first ceremony in 2001, ten mi.p.a. awards have been presented. I am proud to say that our cymbals have won the award four times, and have been runner-up another four times.
That makes MEINL cymbals the most successful m.i.p.a nominee of all cymbal brands ever to have been nominated.
I can wholeheartedly say that we are truly honored by this significant recognition. The
m.i.p.a award means a lot to us and encourages us to keep following our path. It’s a won-derful acknowledgement when independent specialized jour-nalists from all over the world mutually state that MEINL cymbals are the best.

THE Mb20 22" HEAVY bELL RIDE THE ULTIMATE ROCK RIDE
Commonly known as some of the best cymbals for heavy hitters, MEINL’s Mb20 Series has an international follow-ing of die-hard fans who love them for their aggressive yet musical sound.
Some of the world’s leading heavy metal and hard rock drummers like Shinedown’s Barry Kerch, In Flames’ Daniel Svensson, Soilwork’s Dirk Ver beuren, and Dragonforce’s Dave Mackintosh won’t go on stage without their set of Mb20’s. Currently on tour with the living legend Ozzy Osbourne drummer and MEINL Artist Tommy Clufetos elaborates: “I play all Mb20’s hand hammered cymbals be-cause I love how they sound first and foremost. They sound how I want myself to sound”.
“Mb20’s sOUnD HOw I wAnT MYsELf TO sOUnD.”
One Mb20 cymbal in particular has proven itself to be the ulti-
mate choice for many rock drummers; the 22"
Heavy Bell Ride. It has made its way into countless cym-bal set ups and can be heard on a ton of recent CD releases of some of world’s
biggest bands. Having played an
Mb20 Series 22" Heavy Bell Ride myself at a gig I
subbed for recently (Top-40 Rock Covers), I got to appreci-ate its qualities very much, es-pecially during heavier and louder playing situations.
“THE bELL Is jUsT sO KILLER. IT CUTs REALLY AwEsOME.”
It cuts through with a nice ping but doesn’t build up too much. What I enjoyed the most though was its warm and dark sound. It was very musical on
one side, but also extremely aggressive and powerful on the other. It’s not surprising that it has become what it is: The Ultimate Rock Ride.
Tommy ClufeTos (Ozzy OsbOurne), usA
The MB20 Heavy Bell Ride can do whatever you need it to do while playing hard heavy metal music...with a penetrating bell to cut and a great musical ride sound, it has the best of both worlds for playing in intense, high volume situations.
My cymbal that I love the most from MEINL is my Mb20 22" Heavy Bell Ride. The baddest-ass ride ever in the world. Great cut, great ping. You can wash on it a little bit. The bell is just so killer. It cuts really awesome. I love it.
jeFF FAbb (in this MoMent), usA
It literally cuts through everything, even at faster tempos playing 16th or 32nd notes, the cymbal remains discernible and audible. That’s important. It doesn’t build up and become out of control when you play fast.

MEINL’s Mb20 cymbals are a combination of superior ma-terials, craftsmanship and strength, resulting in an aggres-sive sound. They are heavy cymbals which have been devel-oped to meet all of the requirements for today’s hard hitting drummers playing loud music.

B igger is better as the saying goes. That de- pends on the subject
matter at hand of course. However in the way of cymbal sizes, it’s definitely become the case for many drummers worldwide. A bigger cymbal doesn’t just indicate an in-crease in volume though. It can also provide increased sustain, a shimmering wash that underscores a fat two/four, or simply a strong accent that runs deep.
In the past few years, I’ve real-ly seen an increase in the size of crashes that MEINL Cymbal artists have been playing. It began with our artists getting into rides with large diameters in order to achieve a washing/crashing effect. However the sustain that comes with ride cymbals being used as crashes was too much for some of our artists. So we answered their needs with larger crash cym-bals, plain and simple.
“THEY’VE CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME.”
It usually begins with a 19" crash and goes up to 22" in terms of what our artists want to use to express themselves with. Af-ter speaking with some of our artists, I’ve heard some practi-cal and even esoteric ideas on what they try to achieve with these behemoth crashes.
BIG CRASH CYMBALSby chris brewer
Nate young, of post-modern rockers Anberlin had this to say: “I used to play almost all rides exclusively, in terms of cymbals to crash and wash on. Since MEINL’s larger crash sizes came along, it’s been insane, they’ve changed ev-erything for me. I can hear ev-erything better and it’s not just some wall of noise. For me, it’s about having a more melodic sound that’s quieter than the rides. To me they sound beau-tiful.” It seems to be an oddity for some people to consider, but the fact is that larger crash cymbals are infinitely more durable than their ride coun-terparts, as far as using them for crashes go. “Are they more durable?” asks Nate. “Abso-lutely! They’re moving more, giving more. They’ve lasted way longer than the rides I was using to crash on. Throughout the last tour, which was a long one, I didn’t break a single crash.”
“I BELIEVE INSTRU-MENTS ARE TOOLS TO CHANNEL A CONNEC-TION BETWEEN ONE PERSON TO ANOTHER.”
Of course volume is also a main factor for some artists as well. Projection and clarity are key when manning the drums behind a wall of heavy down tuned guitars. When asked about big crash cymbals, Alex
Lopez of extreme metal up-starts Suicide Silence, had a lively and thoughtful response. “I usually try to live life to its fullest, as a musician and a hu-man being. Playing drums and performing live is a huge part of my life. I’m an aggressive, rhythmic, and enthusiastic player. I pretty much hit the drums like it’s going to be the last time I’ll ever play. I believe instruments are tools to channel a connec-tion between one person to another. That’s why I love large loud cymbals. The larger crashes in the MEINL Byzance series are exactly the kinds of tools I need to project my playing and reach out and steal the souls of people.” Well said!DAniel williAMs

A couple of years ago, MEINL Cymbal artist Derek Roddy came to us with an idea for a ride that would prove to be as adaptable to any and all situations as
Derek himself is. Given that Derek breeds snakes, he wanted a ride that had properties that related to the way he views these creatures that have adapted and stood the test of time.
MEINL and Derek came up with what came to be known as the Serpents Ride. As part of the Byzance Brilliant series line of cymbals, a series that combines age old Turkish hand-hammered cymbal craftsmanship and modern German engineering, it was easy for the Serpents Ride to hit upon all of the ser-pentine elements that Derek wanted to see embodied in a ride cymbal: “Swift, delicate, accurate, powerful, mys-tical, intense, scary.”
With two years since the ride’s inception, Derek has had time to get to know this cymbal intimately. Upon reflec-tion, Derek states, “I knew it was going to be versatile, but I literally can record anything with this cymbal and it does what I want it to do. I love that.”
Although Derek is known as the figure-head of Extreme
Metal drumming, and an edu-cational leader in the field, par-ticularly on the subject of Blast Beats, the music Derek writes and records has many facets to it; subtle nuances that draw from different genres and a wide dynamic spectrum being among those facets. This fact requires that Derek’s cymbals speak the way he wants them to. The Serpents Ride performs
flawlessly in this sense. “you can play it really quiet
and it has the same fundamental prop-erties as if you were to play it loud,” says Der-ek. “It speaks so well.”
So now a couple of years after its intro-
duction, the Serpents Ride has more than lived up to the expectations of its co-de-signers. Its ability to adapt and perform has endured. “There’s not any situation that you can put this ride in that would sur-prise me,” says Derek. True musicality. A hallmark of Derek Roddy and MEINL Cymbals.

Dark cymbals are not lathed and have their original appearance and sound char-acteristic. They are distinguished by an earthy sound with a fairly short sustain.

“The hihat shapes a groove,” says MEINL Cymbal artist Felix Lehrmann. “It shapes the character of a groove and therefore the character of every song.”
Of course, the snare drum is widely understood as the heartbeat of the drumset, but for the groove the hihat is the most important instrument. Imagine you are riding along on the hihat, digging in and bearing down. you’re playing an eight note groove and all of a sudden you switch over to sixteenth note pulse. The entire feel and character of the whole song would change instantly. This is because the anchor, to which everything else in the kit is tied into, the hihat, has changed.
“The hihat is the number one instrument in the drum set.”
Felix Lehrmann: If you ask me, you can make a much stronger musical statement
known within his native Germany for his unique and tasteful hihat playing, Felix Lehrmann is an in-demand live and session drummer. In addition to his work with his own band Rivo Drei, his credits include artists such as Sarah Connor, Dendemann, Culcha Candela, Yvonne Catterfeld, and many more. Felix has been a MEINL artist since 2005.
with the hihat than with any other instrument on the drum-set. It simply is style-defining for every song. If the hihat was missing, it wouldn’t necessar-ily be noticeable to the listener. However, everyone subcon-sciously would feel that there is something essential miss-ing. The hihat is the number one instrument in the drum set. It is what passes on the essence of every song.
“When I play the 13" Dark Hihat I feel like I’m coming home.”
Just like many other drummers in MEINL’s artist roster, Felix chose the Byzance 13" Dark Hihat as his favourite.
Felix Lehrmann: MEINL’s as-sortment of great hihats is huge. you can choose from 8" all the way up to 16" in all kinds of finishes and differ-ent weights. But somehow I always come back to the 13" Byzance Dark Hihat. It is the

Usually thought of as simply a Jazz cymbal, the Flat Ride is certainly more than that. Given the fact that a Flat Ride has no bell, most of the typical fre-quencies usually found in ride cymbals are not present. This causes a unique timbre that is unlike any other cymbal. At the same time, a defined stick sound is created that is warm and pleasant. Used in a Funk or Pop band, the sound of a Flat Ride will offer an often overlooked alternative to the standard ride cymbal.
“Flat Rides are multifaceted and kind of exotic sounding,” explains Wolfgang Haffner. “They are subtle sounding, very soft. Their fine overtones make them cut through and are easily audible. Depending
on the musical requirement, I use my Flat Ride as the Main Ride for timekeeping. I like the incomparable timbre and stick response.”
I USE MY FLAT RIDE AS THE MAIN RIDE FOR TIMEKEEPING.
Along with timekeeping, the Flat Ride can also be used for accents, especially when it is equipped with rivets. Wolfgang continues: “Sometimes I ac-cent the one on the Flat Ride. Since the cymbal itself has a very short sustain, the sizzle of the rivets remains audible for two or more bars. Plus as I ex-plained earlier it has a unique basic timbre which gives it an unmistakable sound within my set up.”
Making the case for the Flat Ride
One of the most underrated cymbals in today’s drumming world is the Flat Ride. Most drummers are unaware of the beauty that this cymbal has to offer. MEINL and award winning Jazz drummer Wolfgang Haffner help make the case for this amazing cymbal.

Benny GreBGermany
T o date, the Byzance Vin- tage Series 20" Sand Ride
has been the most challenging cymbal for MEINL to develop. All of MEINL’s knowledge and experience in the art of cym-bal making was required to achieve the sound Benny Greb envisioned for his signature ride cymbal. Since its release
in the summer of 2009, it has become the most successful ride cymbal for MEINL. Maga-zines as well as drum websites from all over the world raved about it in their reviews, which ultimately resulted in the Sand Ride winning the prestigious m.i.p.a. award in 2010. The positive feedback from drum-mers around the globe is con-firmation that MEINL created a legendary cymbal which will be loved by drummers for many generations to come.
“MeInl has created a legend - ary cyMbal whIch wIll be loved by druMMers for Many generatIons to coMe.”
After playing his signature Byzance Vintage Sand Ride for almost two years, MEINL follows up with Benny Greb about his experiences:
How do you feel about the challenging development process of your Sand Ride?Benny Greb: Having the op-portunity to create a signature instrument is a great privilege because you can learn so much and have the chance to discover the sound you
Sand Ride was transferred to the 22" version, but without losing the typical qualities of a 22". I think some drummers who are fans of what 22" cym-bals have to offer are going to love this new one.
“I wIll be swItchIng back and forth between the 20" and 22" sand rIde versIons.”
Do you prefer the 20" or the 22" Sand Ride?Benny Greb: I will be switch-ing back and forth between the 20" and 22" Sand Ride ver-sions. Choice sometimes can be paralyzing, but in this case it’s just beautiful for me to have another sound option avail-able, but of the same family. I have to thank the MEINL Team again for this, but I also have to thank the MEINL fans. The 22" Sand Ride was an idea from the people on the internet. So I really have to thank them. It was a great idea. I just hope they aren’t going to ask for a 32" Sand Ride now (laughs)!
really want. MEINL has so much knowledge and options to help you find your own sound. It was almost overwhelming at times. The Sand Ride has the lon-gest manufacturing process compared to all other MEINL Cymbals. Many visits to the MEINL factory and several prototypes resulted in the 20" Sand Ride. We really cre-ated something special. I have found my perfect ride and I am very proud of it.
what makes it perfect for you?Benny Greb: What matters is I know that every time I take this cymbal out of the bag and play it live or in the studio, it just inspires me with its wonderful versatility as far as its sound is concerned. I think it is just great when other people who play the Sand Ride can have the same experience.
“I have found My perfect rIde and I aM very proud of It.”
what was the reason for de-veloping a 22" version of the Sand Ride?Benny Greb: After the 20" Sand Ride was released, MEINL kept getting emails and twitter messages asking for it. one day I got a big box with 22" Sand Ride prototypes. This was exciting for me because the sound character of the 20"

MEINL’s revolutionary M-Series was introduced in early 2010. The response from both drum-mers and music journalists alike regarding M-Series’ sound and the story behind the technology involved in the manufacturing process of these cymbals has been overwhelming.
M-Series cymbals are made in Germany from B20 bronze alloy featuring high-tech com-puterized manufacturing stan-dards. These cymbals have
a traditional look and feel, but with a modern sound and dis-tinct clarity. They have been developed for the needs of literally all styles of music and are therefore the perfect all around professional cymbal series.
For 2011, MEINL has expanded M-Series to include seven new models. This will offer drum-mers the possibility to further expand their M-Series arsenal of sounds.

Mb10 sErIEs cyMbaLs
the coMplete cyMbAlM einl’s Mb10 series cymbals are quickly becoming a
“go-to” cymbal for many artists on the MEINL roster. If they’re looking for a specific sound and are unsure
of which cymbal will provide what they’re hearing in their head, increasingly Mb10 cymbals are filling their needs. Made from a B10 alloy, Mb10 provides a unique sound and feel that gives drummers something that they’ve never heard or played before.
I recently sat down with legendary drummer and MEINL Cymbal artist Bill Stevenson to discuss what has quickly become one of his favorite cymbals of all time, the MEINL Mb10 Series, and just why that is. To be sure that you’re aware of Bill’s credentials in speaking on matters such as cymbals, here’s a bit of background on him.
Bill rose to fame as the drummer for the Southern California punk rock legends Black Flag. Through legendary albums, Bill helped Black Flag cross into a realm of musicality that was completely their own. No one could sound like them. There’s a reason that
drummers such as Dave Grohl have the Black Flag “bars” as a tattoo. While in Black Flag, Bill helped form and lead another Southern California musical icon, The Descendents. They wrote album after album of songs that had blazing, smart, surf-music inspired „punk“ rock that spoke to the humor and heartbreak of every adolescent out there. Without The Descendents, bands like Blink 182 might never have existed.
Bill and the rest of The Descendents picked up a new vocalist and carried on as ALL. Another decade of strong releases fol-lowed in the tradition of The Descendents, but with the musi-cians honing and refining their craft into a razor tight unit. From there, Bill made his way into the world of producing. Bill and ALL built The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado, where to this day Bill produces records that have gone gold in sales. It‘s widely known to punk rock bands that getting to record at The Blasting Room and with the man behind it, Bill, is akin to a trip to Mecca. All of this must be said to show the monumental impact that Bill has had on so many drummers out there.
bill stevenson(the descendents), UsA
Q: Bill, you‘ve played all of the major cymbal brands out there. Whether on tour or re-cording your own drum tracks, or recording other’s drum tracks while in the role of pro-ducer, you’ve seen and heard them all. Recently you‘ve told me how well the Mb10 series cymbals have done for you at The Blasting Room. It‘s a broad question, but can you tell me, through your years of experience, what the Mb10 series has that none of the other cymbals have? What sets it apart and makes it unique?
Stevenson: The most accurate way to put it is that they have a perfect balance of qualities. They have enough quickness and revsponsiveness to yield appropriate in-telligibility during quick phrases in which I
often play many cymbal ac-cents in rapid succession. But at the same time, the Mb10’s provide a very full and com-plete tone. It seems with most of the cymbals out there you choose between responsive-ness and tone. But the Mb10’s seem to have both bases equally covered.
Q: When you‘re getting sounds and listening to a drum set under the mics, what are you
looking for in a cymbal sound? In what ways do the Mb10‘s help you achieve that cymbal sound?
Stevenson: The same crite-ria seem to apply whether it‘s me playing live, or me sitting in front of a recording con-sole. So, it refers back to the qualities mentioned in the first question.
Q: When you‘re playing the Mb10‘s, how do they feel and sound to you as a player?
Stevenson: I spent many years playing other cymbal brands, and it seemed to always be a battle between tone and responsiveness. So to me the Mb10’s sound
like some of those other cymbals I used to
play had sex and made a
perfect baby. Also, I like the lenght of the decay the Mb10’s have. Sometimes crashes that have enough response for me at quick tempos also happen to have too short of a decay time, making them sound kind of fake, like drum machine cymbals.
Q: Are the Mb10‘s lasting a bit longer for you? Do you find that they have a certain level of durability that others are lacking?
Stevenson: over the years I have developed reasonable technique with the crashes, but I do remember shredding through other companies’ crashes on tour. These Mb10’s are holding up real well. I think we’ve only broken one crash in the two and a half years or so that we have been using them in the studio.

In my current set-up I‘m using Classics 8" low and medium bells. I use these for the in between parts of songs and breakdowns. They add atmosphere and a wave of vibes from eerie and glitchy to harmonious. Also, they are amazing for slicing up drum loops in the studio.
Even though the bell is tiny, it really cuts through no matter what size venue I play. Some-times I use it as a hihat bot-tom with a Byzance splash on top.
These bells provide strong accents and cut through everything. They’re so small and can be placed almost everywhere on the kit. Very comfortable!

My 8" Classics High Bell is the secret weapon in my cymbal set-up. I mostly use it on top of my ride cymbal on the same stand (which is very handy). It’s perfect for short and explosive accents especially when I play blast beats.
Our Classics Series Bells have become immensely popular among drummers of all styles. The various ways in which MEINL Cymbal art-ists are musically express-ing themselves through these bells is inspiring. Here are just a few examples of how they’re utilizing these within their set-ups.

Sometimes I need to use my left hand on the ride bell, but there is no space to set up an extra 20" ride on my left side. I found the perfect so-lution to be the 8" Classics Bell as a left ride bell option.

In 1998 I met with MEINL Cymbal artist Johnny Rabb in Nashville, Tennessee where he showed me some prototypes of a few effect cymbals that he made by himself. I saw these cymbals and thought “what the h$#@ are these?” Those were cymbals and sounds which I had never seen nor heard before. On one side I was fascinated with Johnny’s ideas. I knew right away that it would take some guts for us to come out with cymbals as unconventional as those. That meeting in Nashville was the birth of what is now our extremely popular Generation x Series, which was intro-duced in 2001.
Fast forward 10 years: The line has grown from an initial selection of Johnny Rabb’s Safari Cymbals and Drumbals to Thomas Lang’s signature crashes and Filter Chinas, x-treme and Electro Stacks, China Crashes, Benny Greb’s Trash Hats, and most recent-ly, Mike Terrana’s signature Attack Stacks. In 2003 MEINL won the prestigious m.i.p.a. award for the Generation x Series and produced an inter-national Generation x Work- shop Tour. Almost every MEINL Cymbal artist world-wide has included at least one Generation x effect Cymbal into his or her set-up as these cymbals add a new color to their playing, sparking new levels of inspiration and cre-ativity. Let it also be an inspi-ration for your own creative expression.

A percussion set-up is usually a huge collection of different sounds which the percussionist uses to tastefully fill the spaces in the music. Besides congas,
bongos, timbales, and hand percussion, cymbals are another powerful and colorful way of designing soundscapes within a musical context. MEINL’s Candela Series cymbals offer an array of creative and exotic sounds specifically made to meet all of the requirements for today’s modern percussionists. A true master in the global percussion scene is MEINL art-ist Bertil Mark. We got together with him and discussed the relevance of cymbals for a percussionist within the music.

what are the criteria for how you choose your cymbals?Bertil Mark: As a percus-sionist I try to use cymbals which the drummer I play with doesn’t have in his set-up. In my case that means cymbals such as all of the MEINL Bells, which have high tones with a lot of sustain. I try to play them in a way that supports what he’s doing rhythmically.
Can you give us an example how you try to support what the drummer is playing?Bertil Mark: Given the fact that I am a drummer myself, I sometimes have the same rhythmicalsentiment as the drummer. I tend to enhance the same ac-cents as a drummer and for that reason I chose a cym-bal set up that also includes big sized cymbals. If you play an accent in unison with the drummer you can create a huge energy.
A lot of artists use one or more cymbals and stack them to achieve wacky sounds. Do you do that too?Bertil Mark: yes, and that’s what I like especially about MEINL cymbals. They can be combined with each other to achieve all kinds of wicked
sounds, which comply with my ideas of an organic-electronic sound approach. For example I imitate a natural sound by combining a very thin and soft cymbal with a china. As a result you get natural sounds which are unique and have an elec-tronic aesthetic. I use these sounds then for example to overdub a snare. It adds a new character that has an elec-tronic touch which I like a lot; like a drum machine that has a handclap/snare sound com-bination. That works perfectly
with all MEINL cymbals. Start experimenting!
That is my approach as a percussionist. I try to create
sounds which the drummer does
not have.
why is it important to have sounds the drummer does not have?Bertil Mark: Percussionists always fill the space in between and around the backbeat. Bass and snare drum have a totally different frequency spectrum than cymbals. We hold it all to-gether. That’s why it is impor-tant to have all these cymbal sounds on top, high and spar-kling, to complement those frequencies. That is essential. Those sounds bring the music to life.

Q: you‘ve been on an Ozzfest before, correct? Obviously this Ozzfest was much shorter than previous Ozzfests, only a handful of dates compared to the couple of months in length of previ-ous years. What was the vibe like with such a quick run of dates? What did you enjoy about this year‘s Ozzfest?
Clufetos: yes, I played the ozzfest one time before in 2005… the vibe is ALWAyS great on ozzfest. It‘s guaran-teed to be the best metal show with the best acts every year if it comes to your town. Playing in ozzy‘s band every night on ozzfest was the best seat anybody could ask for!
Q: By the time Ozzfest hit, Ozzy‘s new lineup (you and Gus G. as the new guys) had made its debut. Were you still finding yourself as a band on the Ozzfest dates, or do you feel that you had a high level of com-fort with one another by the time the tour began?
Clufetos: It felt comfort-able from the first time we all jammed together! That being said, we gel more and more with each gig. It‘s a pleasure to play with such great musicians who play so well together. ozzy, Gus G, Blasko, and Adam Wakeman are the greatest rockers I’ve played with!
Q: Being Ozzy‘s new drummer, you cer-tainly enjoyed a high level of visibility among all of the drummers on the tour. Did you get a chance to mingle with the
“PlayIng In Ozzy’s Band every nIghT On OzzfesT was The BesT seaT anyBOdy cOuld ask fOr!”Tommy Clufetos
As if having drummed for rock and roll legends Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, and Rob zombie wasn‘t enough, MEINL cymbal artist Tommy Clufetos landed one of the prize drum chairs in hard rock and heavy metal drumming: ozzy osbourne. with a new album entitled Scream in stores and online as of mid-2010, ozzy and his re-vamped band set out to prove to the live masses once again just why rock‘s reigning madman is the true Prince of Darkness. In recent years, ozzy‘s industry-standard live event ozzfest was curtailed, making room for other festivals to come along and steal some of the legendary festival‘s thunder. So when ozzy hit the road in the summer of 2010 in support of his new album, it only made sense that he brings ozzfest back. For the most recent edition of the metal juggernaut tour, Tommy Clufetos had the best seat in the house.

Clufetos: Everywhere I go people rave about my cymbals.....the dynamics, tone and personality they have are unprecedented. I’m working on some things with MEINL right now and I can‘t wait for people to hear the finished product!
Q: This was the first time you took your MEINL cymbal setup to an outdoor amphitheater set-
ting. How did they do in that atmosphere? Is it the same as any other since you‘re operating on in-ear monitors? Did you discover anything new that you liked about your cymbals while on this run?
Clufetos: The thing I LoVE about these cymbals is that they have the penetrating cut I need for
loud volumes without los-ing the sound I’m looking for. They’re very musical

Summer 2010 found MEINL Cymbal artist Chris Adler and metal legends Lamb of God nearing the end of a two year world tour in support of the band‘s ultra-successful release wrath. During those two years, Chris and the band played familiar territories and conquered new ones. Countries such as Israel, India, and China were able to experience Lamb of God‘s strain of Pure American Metal for the first time in an up close and personal setting. Following all of this, the guys headed back to the uS for the 2010 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival tour, as one of the main stage bands. As veterans of many uS summer festival tours, the band didn‘t want to be a part of just any tour. Turns out that the Mayhem Festival was a positive experience for Chris and Lamb of God.
Q: you‘re a seasoned veteran regarding summer package tours, and it‘s well known that Lamb of God makes careful, calculated choices regarding the tours that it takes. What was appealing about the 2010 Mayhem Festival tour and how did it compare/contrast for Lamb of God and for you?
Adler: We almost didn’t do it. We didn’t think our fans would want to sit through some of the other acts on the bill and we weren’t sure how we would go over on a primarily “rock radio” main stage. In the end we decided to do it for 2 good reasons. 1. Tickets were cheap, in some places $25, and you got to see 12+ bands. 2. We knew that we would have the opportunity to be the heavy hitter on the main stage and to possibly steal the rock radio crowd away to the dark side. In the end, it’s always good to get in front of new audiences and we definitely left our mark.
Q: As a drummer, do you find inspiration from other drummers and/or bands on the tours, and if so who and what were you dig-ging on this particular run?
Adler: Constantly. I spent time with Matt Byrne from Hatebreed, Art Cruz from Winds of Plague and Ray Luzier from Korn. These guys all have different styles and are all great players.
Q: The industry has changed immensely in the past 10 years. It used to be that a tour supported album sales. Now the case is that an album is made to support tours. What did the 2010 Mayhem Festival tour do for LOG in particular? What positives came from it, looking back?
Adler: We are at the end of a 2 year world tour cycle and this tour allowed us to hit the major markets of the uS in a big way before “going away” to write another album. It allowed us another high profile slot on a major summer festival proving we’ve held our own and continued to grow during those 2 years. In the end, I think we did end up making a lot of new fans that might not have been familiar with our particular brand of heavy metal.
Q: When you speak to your fans, particularly drummers who are fans of yours, what are they asking you about your cymbals? What sorts of conversations do you have about this particular subject?
Adler: I get a lot of questions about the different series, since I happen to use quite a few. It’s interesting how many people seem to lock into a particular series and use only that in differ-ent sizes. I’ve always liked the different sounds that each series has to offer, not concerned with things being too different. I’m pretty particular about my sound, more than most, and my setup is by no means haphazard. Drummers are always curious as to how I came up with the combination that seems to work so well together. I tell them to listen with their ears, not their eyes. That sounds ridiculously simple, but it’s worked well for me.

MEINL Cymbal artist Mike Justian is a man of few words. The
guy simply prefers silence. However when you engage Mike in a meaningful con-versation, he can really get to talking…and it’s always interesting, with fruitful in-sights and strong opinions interspersed. So I was hap-py to hit up Mike and ask him a few questions about his experience on the 2010 Summer Slaughter Tour with The Red Chord.
Q: Describe the Summer Slaughter Tour in a general sense and your ex-perience on it. What are its pros and what are its cons?
Justian: Well, Sum-mer Slaughter defi-nitely slaughtered my summer, haha.
The tour was routed for buses, despite the fact that most of the bands were not or should not have been in buses, so almost every night was an overnight drive. It is also fair to say that it was the hottest tour I‘ve ever done. So between that and the long drives I was in a perpetual state of fatigue AND my left hand was either fractured or sprained. Like any tour, I did have a lot of fun, but there was certainly its fair share of hassles too. Some of the pros were the shows themselves. The turnouts were pretty strong everywhere and the crowds were great. I got paid decently and none of the bands were flat out terrible, even if most of the bands were not my kettle of fish. Some of
the cons, the drives, the heat, 8 drum sets, 2 buses and 6 vans at venues designed to facilitate 4 band bills.
Q: Despite your young age, you and the rest of the guys in The Red Chord could (and I hope you don‘t mind me saying this), on the Summer Slaughter Tour, have been viewed as „elder statesmen“ of sorts. Did you find any sort of affinity with any
of the bands on the bill, any sort of affinity with any of the drummers on the bill? What common ground brought you and the young „whipper-snap-pers“ closer together?
Justian: We are definitely not the young turks that we once were, but that‘s just the natu-ral cycle of the music scene and life in general. It‘s easy to be a young hot band, but in a year or two they will likely cool off and be in a similar position as The Red Chord. It‘s at this moment that one really starts to make realistic assessments of themselves, their band,
and their future in music. Be-ing 30 years of age is not going to stop me from pursu-ing music. It‘s just afforded me a more realistic perspec-tive of it, which is something you don‘t get when you‘re in a young hot band; you tend to believe that it‘s going to last forever because that‘s what everyone wants you to believe. As far as the tour goes, socially I don‘t really speak unless spo-
ken to, so I didn‘t really con-nect with any of the younger bands too much, just the oc-casional small talk. I‘m not here to „school“ anyone and most young people these days get their fill of social commentary from the computer. A bunch of us did go on a hike on a day off in Montana and that was really cool, but that would be cool with or without anyone else there. Musically, I remember in Edmonton I overheard one of the young guys saying that he doesn‘t like blues because it‘s „boring and it all sounds the same“ and I wanted to stran-gle him, haha. I did however
talk quite a bit with John from Cephalic and Kerim from Decapitated. Kerim reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger, except that he is a much better drummer than me. John has been an old friend for a long time. If anyone has a similar understanding of how things really work, it‘s John and the Cephalic guys.
Q: How do you think The Red Chord fits into the „extreme metal“ cache that the Summer Slaughter Tour touts? What‘s extreme about The Red Chord in comparison to the other bands?
Justian: ummm, The Red Chord has their place in extreme music by not taking them-
selves too seri-ously. It‘s some-one else‘s job to be a metal cliche, whereas we go on stage to act silly and make fun of people. I don‘t use
triggers and we generally keep things kind of loose and or-ganic, which is a very different approach than most of the other extreme bands. Also, we‘re just really not that inter-ested in where the bar is, who set it, and how to raise it. I personally don‘t care about playing at 260 bpm or tuning to drop A flat or being some sort of an extreme metal phe-nom anymore. We‘ve graduat-ed to that place where we just want to do qualitatively good music that appeals to us and the live show is just an excuse for getting paid to look stupid, haha.

drummers as well. We are a great breed of musicians who don‘t hoard secrets and licks from each other and always seem to be hungry for new challenges, and if you network right you are in the middle of roughly 100 different drum-mers of styles you may have never picked up otherwise. I spent a lot of the tour shop talking and trading licks with a lot of awesome drummers. The only drawbacks of Warped Tour are the hangovers and the sun taking its toll on all your gear.
all musicality behind me and just let loose and enjoy the ride. I know what I‘m capable of doing in my basement and don‘t feel the need to impress anyone with chops and things like that. I think a lot of play-ers these days either spend too much time on a practice pad and forget to enjoy them-selves and entertain people, or do the complete opposite and spend more time on their image and stage presence than their drumming ability. I try and find the perfect bal-ance between.
anything. Heavy hitters tend to lean towards heavier and brighter cymbals with aggres-sive bells and all that and the fact that we are pulling a lot of these songs off with traditional style cymbals is amazing…that they are taking a beating every night, yet still cutting through and blending well with this style of music rather than over-powering it for the sake of that metal „edge“ most guys are going for.
Q: you‘ve been on tour with ETID for some time now. How did the 2010 VANS Warped tour fit into the equation for you guys? Was it all part of some master-plan? Was it simply another tour?
leger: I have been in Every time I Die for a little over a year now, but for anyone that has been following the band longer than that, they know that ETID has done the Vans Warped Tour every second year since 2006, it‘s an honor to be asked to come back this many times.
Warped Tour is far from a nor-mal tour, it‘s more of a travel-ling circus than a club tour.
Q: Describe Warped tour. What are its benefits for a band? For a drummer? What are its drawbacks?
leger: Warped Tour is a long, hot, dirty, sticky, and smelly tour that helps expose bands of different genres to each other’s fans who possibly would have never heard of or attempted to see them in any other setting. This goes for
Q: When I came down for the day to the Atlanta tour date, I spoke with other drummers and they all were raving about you. At the risk of ditching hu-mility for a second, what is it about your drumming that you feel that the other drummers connected to so strongly?
leger: It‘s hard to say, I obvi-ously wasn‘t the best drum-mer on that tour but I feel I can hold my own at times as a mu-sician. That being said, when I step on stage with this style of music I usually tend to put
Q: you did a mini video for MEINL giving us a tour around your cymbals and what you thought about each one and about MEINL Cymbals as a whole. What sorts of com-ments did you receive through-out the tour from your peers and from fans about your cymbal setup? Did any of your cymbals stick out, being commented on more than the others?
leger: I think a lot of peo-ple are impressed with the Byzance series more than

...and the road goes on forever. For Every Time I Die, the band has made it a point to be a part of the vANS warped Tour every other year since 2006. So Summer 2010 found Every Time I Die and drummer and MEINL cymbal artist Ryan Leger back out on the vANS circuit, throwing down brutal buzz-saw riffs and neck breaking rhythms with wild abandon to audi-ences across the uS and Canada. For a band that defies sub-genre-specific categorization, Ryan and Every Time I Die brought high octane rock and roll to the masses every steaming hot day of the summer. For Ryan, the newest member of Every Time I Die, he wouldn‘t have it any other way.

In 2010, global drumming superstar thomas Lang introduced a revolutionary teaching concept to the drum world with the intent of showing real improvements in the playing of the participant. as stated on the camp’s website, “Thomas lang’s Boot Camp is an ultra-intense drum camp where students will get the drumming workout of their lives! Thomas will personally guide small classes through eight days of serious drumming. The bare-bones Drumming Boot Camp is all about hands-on playing for a minimum of 8 hours per day. This camp is all about REAl RESulTS.” is what you read on the camp’s website. so far seven camps spanning from the usa to Europe have been completed and more are in the works for 2011. this is a drum camp on steroids! check it out for yourself on thomaslangdrumcamp.com and sign up for one near you.
brad Morgan, affectionately known to Drive-by truckers fans and friends alike as “Ezb,” has been going at a non-stop clip with Dbt for all of 2010. the first part of the year saw the band release their tenth album The Big To-Do, to much fanfare and critical accolades on an international scale. Ezb and Dbt did what they always do, and that’s hit the road playing the us many times over and eventually getting back to Europe, where the band has a loyal and growing fan base. Early 2011 will see the band’s eleventh album go go Boots released, where they’ll do it all over again and hit the road non-stop. Despite being avid fans of performing live, Ezb and Dbt have found a way to do it all sanely and make time for their personal lives, as Dbt are a band rooted in old school solid values, thus they make sure to balance their workload with time at home with their families. you couldn’t meet a nicer bunch of folks or see a more down and dirty, timeless, honest to goodness rock and roll band live. check ‘em out!
grant Mcfarland and Lancaster, Pennsylvania band this or the apocalypse have been doing things the old-fashioned way…non-stop touring. Lots of bands do this of course, but these guys are special. this past year grant and tOta released their sophomore album, Haunt What's left on goodfight records, produced by none other than fellow MEINL cymbal artist chris adler of Lamb of god, and ever since its release, it’s been non-stop touring in support of it. regarding grant, adler had this to say. "grant is incredibly multifaceted. Not only does he play an enormous role in writing all the mate-rial, he’s a monster on the drums. He has the ability to marry complex rhythms with the idea of a song that doesn’t confuse and turn off the listener. I’ve not seen many songwriters, especially drummers do it as well as grant. He’s an inspiring player and a genius writer."

John longstreth is a workaholic. the guy never quits. John’s brand of extreme Metal drumming has made him an in-demand drummer within his genre of music. his mainstay gig with the kansas city, kansas band origin has taken him all over the world in the last year. along with his live work with origin, John has been recording and playing live with scene stalwarts gorguts. other projects that John has been involved in have been dim Mak, caricature and crator. John recently laid down his drum tracks for the upcoming origin album, which will see a world-wide tour follow in support of it. as extreme metal drummers go, John is one of the single most accomplished out there, with a level of technical skill that is matched only by his ability to give such a precise style of music a deep feel and groove.

In addition to being the funkiest drummer to ever play with germany’s hip-hop-, reggae, soul, and funk artist jan Delay & Disko No.1, jost Nickel brought the house down during his performance at the 2010 Montreal Drum fest in canada. his beats and grooves are unmistakable and have made thousands of people dance during the summer concert festival season in Europe. jost is certainly a drummer to keep your eyes on.
felix ‘D-kat’ Pollard recently had one of his best years ever. the work just kept coming. Long time employers such as r&b/Pop legend Lionel richie and american Idol superstar clay aiken (with ruben studdard) had felix out on the road for quite awhile. Other artists that felix worked with were rapper/singer/song-writer Everlast, japanese smooth jazz/new age/chill-out music keyboardist and com-poser keiko Matsui, r&b, jazz fusion, worship music singer/songwriter/guitarist jonathan butler, Latin percussion legend sheila E., and the american Idol hollywood week television show. 2011 looks like another busy one for felix, with repeat work already lined up with jonathan butler, keiko Matsui, clay aiken and american Idol hollywood week. More to come!
Dirk verbeuren wasted no time as soon as 2010 started. january 2010 saw the release of part one of Dirk's library of the Extreme, the first ever collection of metal beats for toontrack's Superior Drummer software. Later that month, he entered the studio with his long-time band soilwork for their eighth album The Panic Broadcast. In March, Dirk embarked on a two week long drum clinic tour in Northern Europe, and then recorded with anatomy of I featuring the legendary metal bassist steve Digiorgio. Not too long after that, Dirk found himself tracking drums for Meshuggah guitarist fredrik thordendal's Special Defects 2 album alongside world-renowned drummer Morgan Ågren. the new soilwork album hit the shelves in mid-summer 2010 with world tours throughout the remainder of the year. Dirk also hit the studio with Phaze I, recording part two of the library of the Extreme software. a big highlight for Dirk in 2010 was a trip to vancouver, british columbia, canada to record with one of his musical heroes Devin townsend, for Devin’s upcoming Deconstruction album. Dirk never quits work-ing. chances are good that he’s on something you’re listening to right now!
shaking things up and keeping things fresh – every artist needs to do this from time to time in order to stay on their proverbial musical toes. More than just about any artist out there last year, Nick D’virgilio did this. In january of 2010, Nick moved himself and his entire family to Montreal, Quebec, canada to join cirque du soleil as part of one of its many international touring shows. to say that Nick shook things up is putting it mildly. Nick dove in head first and spent 10 hours a day at least, six days a week learning his parts as house drummer for the show. afterwards, two months of shows ensued. as if all of this wasn’t enough, Nick kept his band spock’s beard going and even released the band’s tenth cD titled X. a European tour followed in late 2010. Nick will stay on with cirque du soleil and will hit the Eu next for many more months of shows to come in 2011.

MeInl cymbal artist Jason bittner is arguably one of the hardest working drummers out there. 2010 found Jason and his band shadows fall out on the road in consistent support of their latest studio release Retribution. touring highlights in 2010 were the rockstar energy drink Mayhem festival tour and a triumphant return to the phillipines where the shads filmed a high-energy, big-production live show for the dvd release Madness in Manilla. In addition to his work with shadows fall, Jason spent the last year working with his death metal band burning human, giving clinics at music retailers throughout the us, and giving private lessons when time permits.

jon rice, also known as "charn" to friends and fans alike, and his band of Extreme Metal titans job for a cowboy spent all of 2010 touring in non-stop fashion in support of their billboard top 40 album Ruination. Despite a break-neck pace that would topple most bands, jon and jfac traversed the globe on multiple occasions, bringing their brand of uber-proficient technical extreme metal to the masses. throughout all of this touring, jon even found time to fit his first ever drum clinic in, in front of a packed, standing room only crowd. jon and the attendees enjoyed the clinic so much, that he plans on giving more clinics in the near future. the end of 2010 also saw jon and jfac release Ruination as a limited edition colored vinyl / cD box set, which houses the album as well as both rare and live material. 2011 will see jon and jfac writing the follow up to Ruination, with more road work thrown in for good measure.
after 36 years, Italy’s famous progressive rock band the trip reunited with MEINL cymbal artist furio chricio back on the drums. the band performed at the biggest pro-gressive festival ever to be held in Italy on November 06, 2010. a DvD of this concert will be available followed by a world tour in 2011.
while taking some time off from his gig with Dutch hip hop artist kyteman, MEINL cymbal artist bram hakkens took over the drum chair for singer and Motown artist waylon with whom he has been busy touring ever since. bram is that kind of drummer who knows how to serve the music with his tasteful beats and less-is-more approach to the drum set; an approach that makes everybody start to dance right away. check out his great video on vimeo.com (search for: bram hakkens a beat for Peace).
One of the most significant recent additions to the MEINL cymbals artist roster has been germany’s drumming legend bertram Engel. the contributions he made to the music world playing with legends like udo Lindenberg, Peter Maffay, robert Palmer, bruce springsteen, and many others, are undeniable and have influenced countless drummers of all styles for decades. together with his wife Petra, bertram has founded the rhythm & art academy, a combination of music and fine arts, where guest lectur-ers together with bertram Engel offer private lessons for drummers of all styles and levels. the facility is fully equipped with state of the art drumming and studio equip-ment. Mike terrana has spent most of his time in the last year touring with tarja turunen, axel rudi pell, and also giving drum clinics. In addition, Mike has released another solo record called SinFonica. paying tribute to his love of classical music, Mike has recorded popular classical music themes and spiced them up with his powerful, chops driven drum style.
themes from antonin dvorak’s New World Symphony, piotr Iljitsch tschaikowski’s Nutcracker Suite and 1812 overture, and wolfgang amadeus Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik are just a few pieces which Mike has rearranged and set drums to on sinfonica. “I wanted to honor the music of these great composers with my record,” explains Mike. “I hope to get people who normally are not fans of classical music interested in it and open their eyes for what else is out there. This music is timeless.”
the entire album can be downloaded at terrana.com.
