Purple Heart Bus Sponsored by City of Columbia, Lexington County, and Richland County History: Several months ago I received an email from Carl Lopez, the commander of the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and it included a picture of a public bus in Tallahassee, Florida that was wrapped and honored Purple Heart recipients. The slogan was - Tallahassee, A Purple Heart City. I showed the picture to Mayor Benjamin and suggested this could be an opportunity for our community to recognize our Purple Heart veterans. He told me the city would support the idea if I could get the other governments to share the expense. The Project: To have a Purple Heart bus in our region and the statement will be - “The Midlands - A Purple Heart Community” Seven Purple Heart recipients representing WWll, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan will be depicted on the mural wrap. Bob Schneider and COMET have offered us a bus for 3 years. He also introduced me to the graphics designer that he uses. The original estimate for the wrap and photography was $10,000. After a series of meetings the project cost is now $6,000. The graphics vendor and the photographer are doing the work at their cost. COMET will waive the monthly marketing cost for 3 years. Project Funding: We are asking each government to contribute $2,000 to the project. Lexington County approved the request on January 27, 2015 Richland County is pending - Scheduled to present at Finance committee meeting on February 24. City of Columbia is pending - No scheduled presentation to council. Plan to Unveil Bus We originally planned to unveil the bus prior to the US Army Community Listening Session so we could show an example of Regional Cooperation to Honor our Veterans. The vendors are able to meet a February 26 timetable if there is full funding.
