“I’ve got an obsession with death, but I think it’s like a celebration of life rather than something morbid.” Damien Hirst

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani explains, “Underpinning the work of Qatar Museums Authority is our belief that art can open new channels of communications between diverse nations, peoples and histories.”

This exhibition follows in the footsteps of Hirst’s major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012, which became the most visited solo exhibition in the gallery’s history. And it didn’t

matter that the last big showcase received mixed, if not more critical, reviews, because, for Hirst, it’s all about encouraging opinions.

He once told Reuters, “It’s always healthy to have both views - people love it, people hate it. I once said as long as they spell my name right I don’t mind.”

We’re sure that his instantly recognisable works, which, no doubt, most people are looking forward to seeing, will attract much attention, intrigue and wonder.

EXHIBITION: internationally renowned writer, critic and curator, Francesco Bonami. It forms part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture which celebrates and showcases the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK.

DAMIEN HIRST

Doha has been buzzing with gallerists and artists, their collectors and curators for the past year but no show has been more highly anticipated than Relics, Damien Hirst’s first ever solo exhibition in the Middle East. The capital is finally ready to see the largest collection of Hirst’s work ever assembled, spanning over twenty-five years of his artistic career featuring both iconic and previously unseen works.

Art lovers and culture vultures get ready for a truly special exhibition as world-renowned British artist, Damien Hirst is heading to Doha with the largest showcase of his work ever to be assembled, ready to go on display.

He has been described as “one of the most influential artists of his generation” (Tate Modern) and it’s no secret that Damien Hirst has divided art lovers and critics alike with his interesting and intriguing work. Now, he’s ready to bring that debate to the GCC.

As part of the cultural projects initiated by the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) to promote and support local and international art, the Al Riwaq Doha exhibition space will house many of Hirst’s pieces, some well-known and others unseen, in this retrospective showcase titled ‘Relics’.

The British creative genius, who is also an avid collector of art himself, is famous for his artwork series of preserved dead animals as well as for selling his work at wallet-busting prices.

Hirst first came to public attention in London, in the late 80s, with his exhibition Freeze, displayed in an abandoned warehouse and showing his own work and that of his friends and fellow students at Goldsmiths College. He has since, in the quarter century since that momentous show, become one of most prominent artists in the world.

His countless series of now iconic work is commonly attributed with ushering in a new era for contemporary art. As part of the “Young British Artists”, he was a member of the most prominent group that dominated the contemporary scene back in the 90s.

So, it’s safe to say that this special exhibition is somewhat overdue. It will be the artist’s first solo show in the Middle East and all the art appreciators in the region will be happy to know that the display, which starts on October 10, will continue until January 2014.

The pieces selected for this showcase are taken from a cross-section of Hirst’s most important series. They include parts from the Spot Paintings and the Natural History series of animals preserved in formaldehyde, as well as what is by far the most exciting piece, for us, his famous diamond encrusted skull: ‘For the Love of God’ (2007).

‘Relics’ explains, “art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else … there isn’t anything else.” Hirst’s work investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the tensions and uncertainties at the heart of human experience.

Hirst claims that his work is a testament to his fascination with love, life, and death; he channels the different stages showing interaction of life with death and the decay of the human body. The introduction of such a series by the QMA is part of their cultural plan to foster appreciation of artistic practices and hence open the door for cultural dialogue.

It also aims to bring local and regional audiences to take part in debates and discussions about the arts and to challenge and recreate new perspectives and understanding.

PORSCHE HAVE GONE TO GREAT LENGTHS TO PRESENT THE MACAN AS ‘A GROWN UP 911’ RATHER THAN A ‘BABY CAYENNE’. SO, HOW SUCCESSFUL HAVE THEY BEEN IN THE DELIVERY? FACT HEADS OFF TO SCENIC RAS AL KHAIMAH IN THE UAE TO FIND OUT…

FROM THE OUTSIDE, there’s no mistaking where the Macan gets its DNA from, however Porsche try to present it. From a distance, many would mistake it for the Cayenne, and even up close they’re very similar. While the Macan is visibly smaller when the two are parked next to each other, the main tell is the one-piece ‘clam shell’ bonnet the Macan features. Interestingly, this is the biggest single piece of aluminium ever used in a car’s bodywork, according to Porsche.

The interior of the Macan is superb. Comfortable and cosy, it almost feels tailor made to the driver, with a figure-hugging sports seat holding you in place for fast cornering, and controls that are all literally

at your fingertips. It features the same large, raised centre console as the Cayenne and Panamera that makes you feel like you’re sitting in the cockpit of a jet, with all the Sport, Sport Plus and suspension settings conveniently featured.

The Macan is currently being offered in just two specifications, the Macan S, with a 340hp 3.0l V6 biturbo engine, and the Macan Turbo, with a 400hp 3.6l V6 biturbo. Both feature a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and Porsche’s superb and lightning-quick PDK double-clutch transmission comes standard on all models, which is something the Cayenne has never featured thus far.

NOKIA XL: BOLD, BRIGHT ANDBEAUTIFUL Nokia has gone and done it again. The phone company has recently launched a range of affordable smartphones into the ‘X’ family tree. We take a look at the colourful Nokia XL model to see if this new device can hold its own in the fast-growing and competitive mobile market…

INTRODUCTIONNokia is undoubtedly one of the forefathers of the modern phone industry, renowned for the sturdy build quality of its devices, yet it seems that the Finnish firm wasn’t quite prepared when the colossal wave of smartphones hit the market and demand for such devices surged to an all-time high. Thankfully, Nokia has married with Microsoft and the Windows Phone to launch not one, but three Android devices into the ‘X’ family, and the Nokia XL is the daddy of them all. DESIGN & DISPLAYConsistently recognised for its handset quality and design, the Nokia XL follows suit with a fresh, tile-based user interface inspired by the Lumia family. You might, however, expect a phone of phablet proportions (especially when it’s called the XL), but even though this is the largest version of the Nokia X line, it sports a 5-inch display – reasonable by today’s standards – measuring slightly wider than its family members, the Nokia X and X+. “ I was searching for sand animation and how to draw it, but there were no lessons available. So, I watched the videos and learnt by following her hand movements.”

INTERVIEWNaturally artistic by nature, Zahra Ali’s talents go far and beyond the normal helm of

sketching, painting and poetry. One of the few self taught local artists, her sand drawings will have you mesmerised from the very first few strokes. It beggars belief to see the transformation of sand from 2D portraits to 3D scenes. FACT caught up with this

young artist to find out more about her and her unique art.

When we first met Zahra, we were pleasantly surprised to see a sweet down to earth girl, who is also exceptionally talented. You will be stunned (just as much as we were)to know that Zahra started sand painting, when she was in Jordan studying aircraft engineering (aviation, communication and instruments!)

“I liked this art and in my part time I would draw pictures by sand on the floor,” she says. “I’m self-taught and have had no professional training. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half. When I was studying, I didn’t have a lot of time to draw (maybe an hour), but now that I have finished my studies and while I’m looking for a job, I’m doing this part time. I want to do something professional, but this will always be my hobby.”

Zahra’s style of drawing varies from portraits to sceneries.

Talking about where she got her inspiration from, she says “I liked the work of a sand artist from Ukraine – Kseniya Simonova (winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent). I learnt this by watching her videos

ARTSARTS

on YouTube. I was searching for sand animation and how to draw it, but there were no lessons available. So, I watched the videos and learnt by following her hand movements.”

Zahra uses a special sand to create all her drawings. She explains why the sand used is so important. “I get the sand from Saudi Arabia. It’s soft and doesn’t clump up when wet. The desert sand is not the same. There are different qualities - some artists use sea sand, but I don’t like it because the sand particles are big, and the one that I use is very fine.”

It is amazing to see that a painting takes Zahra only about 15 minutes to make and some as less as two to five minutes.

Some of Zahra’s work has been exhibited on Bahrain TV, Hala Bahrain Show, at National Day in Budaiya, in the UAE and in Jordan (where she drew the logo of her college).

She is also an avid sketcher. “My favourite paintings are my charcoal and pencil sketches. I started drawing and sketching when I was four or five years old.

She speaks enthusiastically about her aspirations for the future. “I want to use this art in my profession. I want to tell a story with sand painting and make advertising videos about aircrafts, and the correct way to use aircrafts. I want to make a safety video by sand painting and to show the importance of airplanes by drawing.”

With great vision in mind, Zahra is optimistic about her future. We haven’t seen the end of her; on the contrary, it’s just the beginning for this bright young lady. We wish her all the very best for the future and to keep the sand flowing! Call 36994033 for

DAY 1DinaWoke up this morning pretty excited about trying the juices. Got them yesterday afternoon and they look too cool! My first three juices down and I’m on a role, no hunger pangs in sight and I’m gulp-ing them down. Talked too soon: the fifth one, with its terrible smell, has me now dreading the next. Although I thought it would taste amazing since it looked so yummy and creamy, the Go Nuts is not that enticing when i take a chug of it; it’s border-line chalky and somewhat too grainy. It’s a fail for me. Oh went to a yoga class!

FarahJust had the first one, Green Junkie. I love it. So refreshing, like salad in a bottle. Feeling good and excited about this. 12pm and still feeling good! Cool crush, the second juice, is okay but doesn’t feel as filling and nutritious as Green Junkie. Also too sweet for me but I guess I need a sugar fix. It’s 2pm and I’m feeling cold and a bit lightheaded- daydreaming of Italian food. Day now is nearly over and I’m in bed falling asleep as I sip on number 6. I love this one - it tastes like Christmas. Perfect for before bedtime.

HabibaI got to work and neatly arranged my raw juice bottles in the kitchen fridge and decided to take a picture of them looking all pretty and colour-ful (naturally I needed this photo for Instagram - #day1detox #yay). Had my first Green Junkie around 9:30am and felt like I was literally drinking a salad. Juice two was Cool Crush, which I abso-lutely loved because of the pineapple and mint. Around 2:30pm Green Junkie had crept up on me again; once more I downed it as fast as I could (I recall even blocking my nose to avoid having to smell it). By around 7pm the real hunger pains began, and I was feeling quite tired by this point. I headed home, and had my last juice of the day: Go Nuts! This was like heaven in a bottle, it tasted just like a milkshake and after a day of pure liquids this was amazing – felt like I was being rewarded for having completed Day 1.

NihanI had my first juice of the day quite early around 7:30am so it made me feel a bit nauseous on an empty stomach. I had half of it initially and the other half over the next hour. Personally, I’m not a big fan of mint so the second juice, if I had the op-tion, I would take it out! The second Green Junkie came after and in comparison to to the first one, all i can smell are vegetables everywhere from my throat to my nose and even my stomach! Yuck. I just wish one of the juices had banana or some-thing! Went for a run followed by a sauna session to help me sweat out the toxins.

JamesSo, had the first juice, as much as I hate cucum-ber, it was rather tasty, and surprisingly satisfying. Next up was Cool Crush, very juice like and didn’t really feel ‘detoxifying’, something I could imagine getting at a restaurant here in Doha. The Beat It was odd. It looked like paint, and the ginger was very strong, also not being a beetroot fan made it a bit more difficult to stomach. Four juices in, and four litres of liquid consumed, I was feeling less bloated than expected – averaged about 14 trips to the toilet a day. The best one was the Go Nuts. In fact it was that good I ended up ordering a gift set of 4 more. At the end of my day after work, I felt I had the energy to go to the gym. Did my usual workout, about 1h30. Big big mistake.

Swedish Chef Bengt has been in Bahrain about a year, since the pre-opening phase and start up phase of the hotel. Trained in classic French food, he has worked around Europe and Dubai. His sommelier training helped him a lot to understand flavours and how they all work together (it was no wonder that we were feeling extremely privileged and excited about the whole tasting!)

The restaurant itself, located on the 34th floor, overlooks the open sea and provides a magnificent view of the entire city.

We began with tasting two starters (lucky us) – the first was a vegetarian starter, a take on the classic French salad (normally a quiche or a pie with onions). This however, had a puff pastry base, topped with marinated red onions, frisse, shaved goats cheese, semi-dried tomatoes, olives and different herbs. It was extremely fresh and light – a perfect blend of savoury and sweet flavours.

“We find dried or sundried tomatoes are too hard, so we do it ourselves,” Chef Bengt explains.

The second starter was pan seared scallops on fennel and citrus salad. The scallops were cooked to perfection and we

couldn’t get enough of the beurre blanc and lemon foam that went with the dish.

“We try and use a lot of citrus this time of year since it’s in season and it breaks nicely with the other components of the dish,” he tells us.

“To me the philosophy around food is the less the chefs do the better, so you need a very good product to start with. We import most of the vegetables from Spain, seafood from France, and let the flavours talk for themselves.”

Next up on the menu was the main course of rack of lamb, herb crusted with herbes de Provence mixture (rosemary, thyme, tarragon, parsley and a touch of Dijon mustard), served over finely cut ratatouille (courgette, aubergine, bell peppers and tomato sauce). The meat was so tender it melted in your mouth. It came with a tian of potatoes (thinly sliced potatoes) baked in butter and stock (to die for), with tomatoes and rosemary jus to go with it.

We were then treated to one of the most delicate desserts - citrus mosaic served

CHEF’S TABLE

with mandarin sorbet and vanilla quenelle. It was the perfect finish to a great meal (even for some of us who don’t have a sweet tooth) as it cleansed the palate beautifully.

The restaurant niches itself as serving food from south of France, which is a little bit lighter than the traditional French fayre.

“I enjoy working with seafood and vegetables because you need to be very precise and it’s a way for the chef to show off his skills. I also enjoy eating this food. Coming to Bahrain has been very nice as the seafood, especially the local prawns, is amazing,” he says.

The restaurants experiment with cooking techniques and are kitted out with the latest technologies and fancy machines and everything is done in-house (slow cooking, water baths etc).

“We implement molecular gastronomy in our day to day cooking. We don’t do it to showcase where it’s applicable, we do it to enhance the flavours. We don’t want to show off; we want to use the advantages it gives us.

“It’s how you eat in France - it’s not just the food; it’s your friends, the occasion, the experience of the whole meal itself.”

This philosophy and Chef Bengt’s passion for true French cuisine has us convinced that we will definitely be coming back for more!
