ORDINARY BOARD Aone position - autumn10-spring11

ryan brownlie

(first year only)

My name is Ryan Brownlie and I am 18 but come 2nd November that will change, for I shall be turning 19. I’m a first year; I’m doing Physics with Astrophysics, my subjects Physics, Maths and Astronomy. I am standing for the Ordinary Board ‘A’ position. I currently stay at the Queen Margaret Residence.

I like to think of myself as approachable and dependable and that is why I want to provide a voice for the members of the QMU. I want you to give me your suggestions about what you want to happen within the Union. As a first year I believe that I’m in a prime position to link between the first year members of the QMU and the board of management.

I am the only first year on the recently closed Events committee; as such I think that I am in a prime position to carry any ideas a first year should have as to what they would like to see at an upcoming event or at an upcoming club night. I shall pass on your ideas and provide you with feedback afterwards. Regardless of what year you are in feel free to give me ideas to take to the committee I am committed to providing you with feedback on your idea.

I want to make the QMU the place you feel most welcome.

I want you to leave with a smile on your face.

I want you to feel like you belong.

Cheers,

Ryan Brownlie

Robin Callaghan-Creighton, 1st year Aged 19 in the Faculty of Social Sciences

I am a very approachable person who is eager to listen, in an unbiased manner, to the needs of others and I am also more than happy to meet new people. Having spent my last year studying Social Care and working with vulnerable adults has taught me valuable skills that could be easily transferred to the role of first year ordinary board member. These skills include standing up for the needs of individuals, taking the appropriate steps to ensure the enjoyment and safety of others and valuing different opinions.

I have also organised a range of different activities and events from Ceilidhs to adventure activity weekends so am aware of the requirements and pressures that come from undertaking a position of responsibility.

I would love to be elected to be able to contribute to the running of this Union. I want to be able to help maintain the fun, welcoming atmosphere that I have experienced during these last couple of weeks of being at University and ensure that the QMU continues to grow as a comfortable place to study, eat and socialise. I will also fight to introduce more cheesy music to Cheesy Pop, which I feel is sadly lacking.

James Doherty

I’m James Doherty, 18 years old, I was raised in Glasgow and I’m now studying physics.

I love the QMU – probably more than anyone should love an inanimate object. The first time I walked through the doors during Freshers’ Week I knew this was the only union for me – and it wasn’t all because of the free barbeque. I hd the feeling that this would be the place where I spent many hours during my years at Univeersity. I’m glad to say that my first impression was very accurate, as I continue to be impressed by the quality of everything offered by the QMU.

It is because of this appreciartion of the QMU that I want to become an Ordinary Board member and get more involved, to paraphrase JFK “ask not what your student union can do for you – ask what you can do for your student union.”

If elected I have two main aims. Firstly, I’d like to promote and generally make a fuss over some of the lesser known services that the QMU provides. Secondally, for all you movie buffs out there, I intend to investigate the possibility of starting movie nights in the QMU.

Thanks for your time and hopefully your vote.

ORDINARY BOARD Btwo positions - autumn10-autumn11(first year only)

alice stearnI’m Alice Stearn, I’m 19 and a 1st year English Lit and History student.

The QMU offers everything I wanted in a union before I came to Glasgow and I’d really like to contribute to and become more involved with a union that has welcomed me so heartily.

Over the past few months I have gained experience by :- becoming involved in the committees- volunteering to the running of some of the unions most successful nights- generally learning about the running of the union

This has given me an insight into how the QM works and the ways I can make a difference to the membership. I feel that this, coupled with my experience of running my local Amnesty International Youth group at home, make me a strong and able candidate.

If elected I would strive to- give new insight into what the union means to its members and any improvements they’d like to see- keep up the attendance of new members by highlighting all the union has to offer and presenting exciting ideas for events at the union- continue the good work of the union in catering for its varied membership.

So for enthusiasm, commitment and fun vote A #1 for Board B

joshua taylorMy name’s Josh Taylor, and I’d like to think that I’m friendly and ap-proachable, important qualities to have, since i’ll hopefully be your link to the board.

Since getting involved in some of the various committees in the qm, I have come to realise how much effort and time the members of the board and committees put in to coordinate events, the services the QM provide, and the general running of the union. I want to be a part of this, helping to provide students with the best student experiences possible.

Increasing students awareness of the services provided by the QM. The QM is known for its student sup-port, and offers a wide range of services and assistance. I want to increase the general student bodies awareness of these. With the increased awareness will hopefully come increased demand, and this would hopefully lead to further services being offered.

All in all, I’d like to help you realise that there are even more reasons why the qm is just generally amaz-ing.

ORDINARY BOARD Cthree positions - autumn10-spring11

joel mcanallenHello, my name is Joel McAnallen, I am a fourth year, Joint Honours Student, studying Philosophy and Theology.

I feel that you would be putting your vote to good use by voting me 1 today for a number of reasons. Despite the fact I have only been inb-volbved in the internal workings of the QM since making the Freshers’ Helper team this year; I have learned a lot in what seems like a rela-tively short space of time.

- From my first attendance at the Social Committee, I have been throwing myself towards almost every task which the Convenor has needed help with. This has resulted in me hosting Karaoke in Jim’s pretty much every Friday night until the end of the (school) year and acting DJ during the Big Wednesday Night Pub Quiz.- As well as helping out on events which have been long standing, I am also using my initiative to rein-vent events which are no longer running, which I am organizing and PR-ing for myself; the first o these being pool competitions in Champions’ Bar, due to begin 2nd November.- I have also made the, now closed Events Committee, which places me in a perfect position to act media-tor for your ideas going from little seeds, in your mind, to banging events in

bateman mcbride

My name is Bateman McBride, I’m in my third year reading Computing and Maths and I am running for the position of Ordinary Board C (6 months).

You may already know me as a Fresher’s Helper this year, or from Friday Face-Off, which I have presented since the beginning of this session.

I am running for QM board principally because I love this place and everyone in it, and that being on board will eternally connect me to the place in which I spend near every spare minute of my life.

I like to think of myself as approachable, and this legitimises my candidacy rather a lot, as the job of the Ord. Board is to be the direct link from you, the member, to the board. I’d be over the moon to have any of you walk up to me for a chat over some coffee (preferably not a coffee).

I don’t have any personal agendas on how to improve the union. I think it’s amazing. However, you might have issues or suggestions, and I care about those. I really do. The more people the QM pleases, the happier and even more awesome it will be, and I believe we’d all be ecstatic if that were the case.

Howdy folks my name is Ben Mervis, I’m a third year student studying history and I’m American by birth. I’m running for the position of Ordinary Board C.

When I’m not in lectures, I’m probably at the QM; I love the QMU and the amount of time I spend there is reflected in that. The position of Ordinary Board member is a vital one to our union, as it is concerned with the maintenance, duties and progression of the union on a basic level, ensuring that our beloved QMU keeps improving daily. I can’t promise new bars or fundamental changes, but here is…

WHAT I CAN PROMISE:- Internal Experience: Fresher’s Helper ’10, Events Committee Member ’10- Dedication- Honest, Friendly Service- A Fresh Perspective on events and management: Before enrolling at GU, I went to Uni in America. I have experience with fraternities but also management experience (founding treasurer of our Philosophy Society).- Improvements: Everyone wants cheaper drink prices, etc, but what’s realistic? What about a guest speaker series? What about more movie nights and unique events? These ideas are merely the beginning of a year’s worth; aiming to make your time at QM the most enjoyable, helping with both big events, and day-to-day work.

ORDINARY BOARD C ORDINARY BOARD Dthree positions - autumn10-autumn11

KARIN BRIMSI am a 2nd year chemistry student and since coming to Glasgow, QMU has been a large part of my life. I immediately became involved in a variety of activities. Over the past year and a half I have, among many other things:

* Been actively involved in Social Committee.* Helped run and host several events including quizzes and karaoke.* Had an amazing week as a Fresher’s Helper.

If elected I would strive to:

* Bring fresh ideas to the board and encourage other QMU members to do the same through committees.* Form a stronger link between Support and Services Committee and events run by other committees within the QM. This will both help raise awareness of the work that S&S do whilst supporting a worthy cause.* Be friendly and accessible to members.

A vital part of being an excellent board member is listening to you, the members and putting your ideas across. I have the skills, dedication and experience required to be exactly that and help drive the board of management forward, ensuring that you get the most out of the QMU.

Vote Brims #1.

ORDINARY BOARD Dthree positions - autumn10-autumn11

HANNAH BUTLERI have been coming to the QMU for two and a bit years now, enjoying its unmatchable ambience, character and loyal membership. I have always relied on the QMU as a home away from home and recently I’ve become more involved with the runnings of the Union including being a Fresher’s Helper, DJing in Jim’s Bar at Quids and being a part of the Events Committee.

Those who know me know me for my enthusiasm, dedication and my passion for the QM, not to mention my moxy and wiley charm. But for those who don’t I am friendly and always have time for a chat about anything.

I have a few ideas I’d like to explore if elected to Board. Another member and I are hoping to get a vinyl library arranged for member use which would help maintain the QM’s reputation for musical appreciation. I also feel very strongly about the taboo surrounding C-Card and would want to help change this. I would also want to discuss the possibility of developing the area behind Jim’s into a beer garden.

All in all, I have the best intentions for the QMU, would be an awesomely committed Ord Board member and think you should Vote BUTLER #1 for Ord Board D!

COLUM FRASER

Hello, my name is Colum Fraser. I’m a third year studying Maths & Politics in the College of Social Sciences.

The QMU is undoubtedly the greatest institution in the world, and it’s the membership and the board that make it great.I believe that I would be a great addition to the Board of Management in the union for the following reasons.

- I can’t promise free drinks and a Beatles reunion. I can, however, promise that it is as important to me that the members of the union are represented to the board as it is that the union is presented to them, and I promise that no suggestion, contribution or idea will be overlooked.- I have been extensively involved in the (year-old!) QM Debating Society from the start and I have great faith that debates and talks could contribute something interesting, popular and new to the QM’s events repertoire.- You’ll read this on every manifesto but that’s because it’s true – for all of us; I love the QM; I came here as a quiet maths student, now I’m loud, enthusiastic, committee-going and filled with energy. I was a Fresher’s Helper too. It was the best week ever.

Plus, I’ve always wanted to use a radio. Over and out. Vote Colum #1 for Ord. Board D

Hi my name’s Laura Jamieson and I’m running for a year long ordinary board position.

I’ve had experience on the board already, so have an understanding of what works for the QM, so can help come up with new and successful events.

During my time on the board, the changeover from Rev to Quids happened, so I know that we can sometimes face difficult choices, but ultimately have to look out for the good of our union. I am fully prepared to help make these decisions and support choices made.

If elected, I’d like to take part in organising some kind of refreshers week which gives all our events a big push. This would concentrate on all students and not just freshers, so that everyone feels catered for. I also feel we need to work on spreading the message of committees and services within the Union, so members understand what we offer and what they can do to get involved.

Most importantly I’m passionate about the QM, and have shown a lot of enthusiasm for it through being a freshers helper, social left tenant, a part of the newly closed events committee and always being in the place! I would just love to help make the place somewhere anybody can feel at home in.

I see the role of fsm to be there to inspire, challenge and educate the board of management. I plan on doing this in every way I can. I currently run the whisky club, helped set up the wine soc, am organising the QMU’s Big Hunt and have a hand in the new Sports @ QMU Committee. The next 6 months will see me attempting tutor more people come up with new ideas and running with them.

Have a good day.

CHRIS HALL

CHRIS HALL

Dear Members of the Queen Margaret Union,

My name is Chris Hall, I’m standing for former student member (FSM) and here is why I should be elected to this position.

I have three and a half years experience, I have been elected to rep-resent your views 4 times and held 4 separate positions including 18 months as convenor and a year as FSM. My knowledge and experi-ence will be invaluable to what will be a relatively new board.

In the last year I have spent much of my time harking on about the past and how much better it was in my day but also improving the processes we have and holding the board to the highest standards. I shall continue to do this as I strive to make the union as good as it can be. I also have a love for boring paper-work, so I will call dibs on making sure that the boring paperwork is done eloquently and promptly.

If elected I shall do my best to make sure that there is something for everyone here.

With great experience comes great continuity and progress.

thank you very much,

Please vote CHRIS HALL #1 for FSM.
