Hybrid Apron Belt (HAB) Feeder*Spokane, WashingtonThe HAB was 30m long, 4.3m wide, and powered by 2 large Hagglund CB560 hydraulic motors, making it the largest filter press feeder ever constructed by FLSmidth. Cost and trade off studies were done on all major components to ensure an optimal design for fabrication, installation, and operation. Technical aspects of the machine were documented in a detailed report which was presented to the Product Engineering group who were responsible for the machine after the R&D phase of the project was completed. The report contained finite element analyses, discrete element modeling, technical tradeoffs, and design decisions.

Dalles Dam Navigation Gates Finite Element Analysis*The Dalles, OregonThe navigation gates on the Dalles dam allow ship and barge passage on the Columbia River. It is estimated that 8M tons of cargo passes through the lock each year, thus any problems with this navigation gate would have significant impact on the region. To reduce technical risks a fast paced analysis of the Dalles dam navigation gates was undertaken to ensure the lifting of the new 850,000lb gates did not cause any structural damage the gates. The analysis used detailed SolidWorks models provided by the Corp of Engineers, which were then decomposed into shell models for finite element analysis (FEA) using SolidWorks Simulation. Additional sub-analyses were done critical areas such as where the lifting devices attached to the main structure. Estimated construction cost of this project was 15M USD.

Highway 395 and 2 Overpass Finite Element Analysis*Spokane, WashingtonHighway 395 and highway 2 are two high traffic highways in the Spokane WA area. I was given the task of assisting the contractor in attaining WSDOT acceptance of a complex installation sequence for new curved overpasses for the highways.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

SummaryIn 2016 SSR was hired to evaluate and upgrade an existing study and take the concept design to 50% Design Development. This work involved the re-evaluated of a previous study that evaluated the replacement of the existing induction units or addition of a new four-pipe fan coil system. Based on conversations with the CU Engineering department, review of the facility, and review of the previous study, it was decided that a four-pipe fan coil system with dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) was the preferred choice.

During the evaluation, SSR reviewed all of the existing building record documentation and talked to the maintenance department to assess the current status of the infrastructure. Site observations were also performed to verify the accuracy of the record drawings. Random above ceiling observations were done to assess the height restrictions in the building’s ceiling system. Evaluation of the existing electrical system was also done to determine the feasibility of adding fan coils to the existing electrical system.

SSR then developed a 50% Design Development drawing package, design narrative, and preliminary cost opinion. The design narrative also included a proposed phasing sequence as the ECOT facility had to remain occupied during construction. The phasing sequence was closely coordinated with CU Engineering to ensure the success of the project and to minimize disruption to adjacent floors. The cost opinion used local labor rates based on other projects done on the University of Colorado, Boulder campus.

At the end of the 50% Design Development the proposed project scope for the complete design was:1. Addition of four-pipe fan coils to replace the existing induction units.2. Upgrading and refurbishment of the existing dedicated outdoor air handler that

currently serves the induction units. 3. Upgrading and refurbishment of the existing exhaust system currently serving

various areas of the building. 4. Upgrading of the control system for the entire facility. 5. Routing of new ductwork and piping from the main pipe chase to the new fan

coils. 6. Modification of the fire protection system to allow for the installation of the

new fan coil system.

The design narrative and preliminary cost opinion then were used to develop a project scope for the renovation of the ECOT facility.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

SummaryThe project involved the replacement of a 350-ton water cooled chiller, associated cooling tower, and all related chilled water distribution pumps in an existing administrative and office building. The existing zone pumping arrangement included three dedicated chilled water loop zone pumps piped such that each zone could be manually bypassed if necessary. The system pumps were located in a common area with the hot water distribution pumps, which were piped in a similar bypass arrangement. All these pumps were intermingled together resulting in a very complicated and intermingled piping configuration within the plant that was very difficult to operate, troubleshoot, and understand.

SSR evaluated the installed systems in detail to understand the existing distribution system configuration before evaluating and making recommendations about optimizing the pump locations and piping arrangements within the plant for improved service access and piping efficiency. Options for various distributing system concepts were presented and evaluated together with the owner, inclusive of a zoned pumping concept and a parallel manifold arrangement to optimize equipment location configuration, ease of maintenance, and operational efficiencies. The resulting concept provided for a much improved mechanical equipment layout within this chiller plant.

The design concept incorporated the use of temporary chillers to maintain building operation as the schedule dictated that the construction efforts would need to overlap the cooling season.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

SummaryThe UNC Butler-Hancock renovation and addition project is designed to update the functional and energy performance of the existing Butler Hancock Hall on the University of Northern Colorado campus built in the early 1970s. The design of the project provides new classroom, locker room, strength and conditioning, athletic training and office spaces to serve the academic and athletic needs of present and future user groups. The project also provides a new public face for the UNC Athletics Department. The exterior of the addition provides a contemporary aesthetic designed in conjunction with other new construction on the campus. The primary feature in the design to showcase UNC Athletics is the new Event Lobby and Hall of Fame, creating spaces to showcase the sports highlights of the University.

The renovation and addition of the building is a LEED Gold project that has several HVAC and plumbing credits. The building’s mechanical systems were designed in accordance to ASHRAE Standard 55 Thermal Comfort and ASHRAE Standard 62.1 Ventilation for Indoor Air Quality. ASHRAE’s ventilation requirements were exceeded by 30% to earn the associated LEED credit. New generation of ultra low flow water closets and urinals as well as low flow sensor faucets were specified resulting in a reduction in water consumption of 30%, earning another LEED credit. The LEED prerequisite for refrigerant management was met as well as the requirements for the LEED credit for enhanced refrigerant management.

SummaryColorado College is a small, multi-discipline liberal arts school. Because of the broad range of disciplines, the school needed a comprehensive arts center that could be used by painters, poets, and actors alike. The interior holds a 433-seat auditorium, sound stage, and screening room in addition to classrooms and common areas. Every room in the building can sustain at least three functions, the central atrium has ampitheater seating and is ringed by a catwalk that can be used for fine arts exhibitions. The classrooms were designed to be easily reconfigurable and the technological infrastructure can be adapted to the needs of visiting artists and professors.

Due to the building’s use for performing arts, special attention had to be given to low acoustical noise criteria. The SSR team coordinated with lighting, theatrical, and acoustical designers to provide power for the various theatrical systems that were put into place. Special sound rated transformers were used and all equipment was placed in the basement.

Through the efforts of SSR, the architect, and the building contractor, the Cornerstone Arts Building achieved LEED Gold®.
