All stakeholders benefits from accreditation. Accreditation assures parents that the school is evaluated and that its programs meet highest standards; students are assured that their diplomas count as it validates transcripts and that they can attend universities of their choice; and schools are assured that they are providing quality education and have quality systems in place which have the best of the students at heart.

Accreditation is a lengthy process. It generally takes 2-3 years before a school receives accreditation. The first step in the accreditation process is to determine whether a school can apply for accreditation and is a legal entity in that sense. Once this is done then the school is asked to complete an application form detailing their academic programs, the systems they have in place to make sure these a c a d e m i c p r o g r a m s are delivered effectively, assessment and reporting s y s t e m s , i n f o r m a t i o n about teachers and their qualifications, professional development programs, health and safety standards and systems and so on. This takes several months to complete. The report along with supporting documents is sent for evaluation. Once the acc red i t a t ion bodies read and decide that the school is worthy of becoming a member, they send a member to visit the school and validate the information present in the documents submitted. The visitor writes s a detailed report and recommends the school as a candidate school or provides a set of changes to be made before it can become a candidate school; then comes the self-study and a final visit.

On January 19th, 2017 MSA sent their delegate and AIC was evaluated. Two weeks ago we received the good news that we will be moving on to our self-study and final visit. This indicates that the school has established very good education programs and systems for delivering these programs. We are proud of this achievement as this means that students attending our 4 year program (from Grade 9-12) will have a great advantage when applying to universities overseas, particularly in the US and Canada. For most universities in Canada and some in the US, our students won’t have to do the IELTS or TOEFL to prove their English proficiency.

WASC will most likely be conducting their visit with the IB visit in April and we are excited to have them on our campus. We believe learning is a life-long thing and these visits will only make our school a better place for all of us.

About MSA: is a voluntary, peer-based, non-profit association that performs peer evaluation and regional accreditation of public and private secondary/high schools and elementary schools in the Mid-Atlantic United States and certain foreign institutions of American origin. Its headquarters are in Center City, Philadelphia.

About WASC: is one of six official academic bodies responsible for the accreditation of public and private universities, colleges, secondary and elementary schools in the United States and foreign institutions of American origin. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges has jurisdiction over the U.S. states of California and Hawaii, its territories of Guam, American Samoa and Northern Marianas Islands, in addition to the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, the Pacific Rim, East Asia, and areas of the Pacific and East Asia where American schools or colleges may apply to it for service.

A G9 student sent me an email on Friday,17 February about the possible threat of an avian H7N9 influenza virus to our community, by the pigeons we keep on campus. What has impressed me is that the student cares about our community. That is a good example of an individual’s effort to build a caring community at AIC.

Caring is one of the IB Learner profile attributes. Caring students “show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others.”

As an IB school, the AIC community has been actively promoting caring behavior to all members of the community. The list of examples of caring behavior is long and growing. The senior students help junior ones with their learning and life on campus; male students help female students carry their heavy luggage to their dorms; fundraising on AIC Fun Day for Couleurs de Chine to help female students in remote villages of the Greater Miao Mountains access to education; participating in the Guangzhou Terry Fox Run – the fundraising event for local cancer research; buddy system helps new students to integrate into our community; the CAS service project provides students with an opportunity to help themselves by helping others, getting involved in community service; health talks increase students’ awareness of healthy lifestyles; the mentor system assists students in their academic and personal life on campus, giving students reasonable allowances for mistakes, concentrating more on what is done well than dwelling on past failures. Students are encouraged to fully participate in their classes through learning experiences that emphasize opportunities for recognition based on academic achievement and the IB learner profile.

Caring involves treating people with kindness, love, respect and generosity, helping people in need, and being sensitive to people’s feelings. Mencius, the famous Chinese philosopher, said: “He who loves others is constantly loved by them; he who respects others is constantly respected by them.”

With love and respect, we can work collaboratively to demonstrate caring actions and attitudes, and thus develop AIC into an embodiment of a caring community.

Page 6: Quality Control Check at AIC Issue 6... · 2017-04-18 · IB Diploma Subject Selection Information Afternoon for Grade 10 Students on March 17, 2017 @ 14:30 By Bob DARWISH AIC would

Additionally, students and their parents will have the opportunity to talk to teachers and the University Counsellor informally at the end of the session to ask questions they may have. This event is organized so that students and parents are aware of the IB Diploma Program, the subjects we are offering next year and the process involved in making decisions about subject selection at AIC.

We would also like you to know that during March and early April, mentors, DP1 and DP2 students will share their knowledge and experience of the IBDP to help Grade 10 students with their subject choices as well. It is important for our Grade 10 students to listen to these informal conversations in their mentor groups, to ask questions they may have, and to utilize the support system at school to make well-informed decisions.

The current Grade 10 students will have to make their choices by April 28, 2017 and submit their completed forms. Once these forms are collected, every Grade 10 student will be required to meet with Bob to discuss her/his subject choices. The purpose of this activity is to check that the course chosen is possible and suitable for the individual student.

We are looking forward to seeing all the parents and our Grade 10 students on that day. Please, arrive early to make sure that you do not miss any important information.

Science Department

Practical:

In the Group 4 Experimental Sciences subjects - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Systems and Societies, there are assessed practices in the form of IAs (Internal Assessment). It is where students demonstrate their skills in designing, conducting, and evaluating an investigation. In Biology, this is worth 20% of their final assessment; 80% is based on the i r ex te rna l ly assessed examination. So, it is important students develop their practical skills in class.

Last week, Athicha and Jeremy led the DP2 Biology class, where students investigated the anatomy of the heart, via a dissection. In the experiment, the students needed to dissect a pig's heart.

Some of the tasks involved:

Working out where the atrium and ventricles are in the heart.

What is the heart’s surface like?

A description of the differences in properties between

the coronary arteries and veins.

Measuring the largest diameter of the Aorta and the Vena Cava.

The students enjoyed the fun of the experiment, yet gained a context to apply their existing knowledge and understanding.

Three Way ConferencesBy Bob DARWISH

Three Way Conferences are to share with parents in the presence of their children (issues related to progress in class and other school based activities) how successfully, or unsuccessfully, learning is proceeding in all subjects. The intention is to involve everyone (student parent and teacher) in an open and honest discussion. Because students are the learners whose learning is being discussed, and they should be the most important stakeholder in the learning process. Where there is a concern, it is hoped that the most important response comes from the student. This is also a chance for parents to find out the type of help that can offer that is in the best interests of the students. At the same time, teachers at AIC want to know what parents are thinking, and parents are encouraged at the Three-Way Conferences to be frank about their perception of the academic program as it affects their children.

The second semester Three Conferences are for students of IEP, Grades 9, 10 and DP1 students. DP2 students will have Two Way Conferences after their Mock Exams.

Please, make appointments via Parent Portal on Engage.

If for some reason you have not been able to use Parent Portal so far, please contact Shao Hao Wu at [email protected] requesting for your log in and password. He will ensure you have the necessary information to log into Parent Portal to make appointments. Upon logging in you should see your son’s or daughter’s picture and under it a message which says “Book Parents Evening” (find below a sample screenshot). Simply click on the link and you will be redirected to the page which will let you book

appointments with teachers.

The Three Way Conference will be held on March 24 (13:00-20:00) & March 25 (10:00-14:00). Since each meeting is approximately 10 minutes long, you must also make sure that you are ready to talk to the teachers: come prepared with questions, concerns and comments you may have. In this way everyone will be able to gain the best from the meetings and your limited time will be well used

NOTE:

a) While we would like to see all students, students with an average of below 4.5 must make the effort to come and see all their teachers.

b) All international students must attend the 3 way conferences. If your parents are not here, you must make an appointment with your teachers and discuss your progress. We can try to arrange skype interviews with your parents at a time that is most convenient for your parents and teachers.

c) The deadline for making appointments is at 16:30 on March 23, 2017.

Why is reading so important? By Chrys HILL

We all know that reading is important but we do not often pause to consider … why? What is it about reading that makes it so important that it becomes such a big part of our schooling right from the very first day? There are so many ways to answer this question because reading is an essential survival tool of our time. Reading signs and posters gives us instructions from how to get to places, to how we should live our lives. Just consider the amount of written instructions that we come into contact with

Page 10: Quality Control Check at AIC Issue 6... · 2017-04-18 · IB Diploma Subject Selection Information Afternoon for Grade 10 Students on March 17, 2017 @ 14:30 By Bob DARWISH AIC would

each day of our lives. We are informed what to use for what purpose and where we can get it. We read about places we want to visit and we read about how to get there. These are very practical uses of reading and are about how we function in the world. But what about recreational reading? Books. Reading for pleasure is just as important as reading instructions. Maybe even more so!

Reading is generally done in silence. Your brain is focused and not cluttered with competing distractions and it is this point that makes reading so important. It is like an open highway for the brain. Peddle to the floor, information is racing into our brains unobstructed. Ideas and different points of view have access to us and we can experience the thoughts of others about everything in and out of this world.

Through reading we become exposed to new things, new ideas, new information. This in turn helps us become better people, wiser people, people who are more likely to make good decisions.

Reading exposes you to imagination and empathy. You begin to explore things from different angles and to see things you thought you knew well in a completely different way. This helps give you the tools to get your own creative juices working and enables you to blend your knowledge with the knowledge of others. You start to link more and more things together in imaginative and creative ways. New solutions and new answers emerge; all because we take the time to just sit quietly somewhere to read and be with our thoughts.

One of the most astonishing things about reading is the subtle transition where you begin to merge with the book. A well written story can literally take us out of ourselves and transport us into someone else’s world. While we are reading a story we briefly join ourselves with the mind of the author. We feel as they do, we hope as they do and we experience as they experience. I am hugely grateful for the privilege of being able to share moments of fantasy or penetrating insight in the company of some of my favourite authors. How else could I visit the ‘Invisible Cities’ or experience the passionate anxiety of 16th century Istanbul artists without ‘flying Calvino or Pamuk airlines’.

I have ‘dreamed’ the world and experienced amazing things with only a good book as my ticket.

What are the CAS trips for?By Keith BUDD

Every year, in the first week of May, all AIC students pack into buses with teachers and head off for a week of Creativity, Activity and Service. This year will be no exception, and there are 5 trips planned. These trips, however, are not just a ‘holiday’ - they are a time to work on your own education and growth through Creativity, Activity and Service. They are a time to experience first hand the benefits an IB education is giving you, and how you can put the attributes on the learner profile into action in the real world.

On these trips you will get chances to INQUIRE about the local people you meet there, and how they live in harmony (or not) with their natural environment. You will get chances to become more KNOWLEDGEABLE abou t China , and the people of China and their daily lives. You will have opportunities to be THINKERS, and be REFLECTIVE about the activities you are doing and what you are learning about yourself and your friends

and teachers by doing them. You will Learn to be OPEN-MINDED, and accept the lives and lifestyles of others, and be CARING when you work with them as part of the service component of your trip. You will be PRINCIPLED in your interactions with others, and have to make the kind of real decisions in the real world that you need to do to become a RISK-TAKER, and ensure that you develop into a healthy, happy and BALANCED person.

So whichever CAS trip you are on, make sure tha t you bear the IB learner profile in mind and apply it to the real wor ld s i tua t ions you encounter. Be active, not passive, and take part in the world around you so you can better appreciate your place within it.

This month’s offers have seen more non-UK Universities accepting AIC students. Offers from the US, Canada Hong Kong, and The Netherlands have started to be given to our DP2 students. Three very prestigious Universities have given a dozen students an option to study with them, after they complete their IB exams. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of British Columbia, and University of Hong Kong are great universities, within the Top 50 in the QS Rankings. We now have 8 separate institutions within the Top 50 offering AIC students a place, 14 in the Top 100, and 20 in the Top 200. As the DP2 students send off their High School Transcripts to their Canadian and remaining US choices, many are hopeful to gain more options. The DP2 have now started their applications to universities in Australia, New Zealand, and continue to apply to EU and Asian institutions, including AIC’s first Medicine applicant.

s ta tements a l ready, a f te r having a sess ion demonstrating good practice in this task. This is an ongoing task that they are to start and consider throughout this semester.

Additionally, if you have been keeping up-to-date with the AIC WeChat group, you would know about the recent visits we have had, from Blue Mountain International Hotel and Management School (Australia and Pacific’s No. 1 Hotel Institution), and New York Film Academy.

The New York Film Academy speaker inspired many students into considering some of the large number of courses on offer there. Some students who were previously considering other options decided to change their outlook and start thinking more about other industries, such as those related to the media and film industries.

In the Blue Mountain’s meeting, the admissions officer described the school in detail. He showed figures that evidenced that BMIHMS has obtained an excellent reputation for providing hotel graduates to the industry, and close links with leaders in this field. BMIHMS has a unique way of teaching, in an industry specific simulated campus, with two paid placements.

AIC Book of the Month

To add to the diversity of resources, the AIC Library is proud to recommend the non-fiction book “Deep Vegetarianism” as the book of the month. In the genre of philosophy and ethics, author Michael Allex Fox explores

a deeper meaning of vegetarianism and its holistic aspects. Maybe you will reconsider your meal plan after this wonderful read!

Challenging the basic assumptions of a meat-eating society, Deep Vegetarianism is a spirited and compelling defense of a vegetarian lifestyle. Considering all of the major arguments both for and against vegetarianism and the habits of meat-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans alike, Michael Allen Fox addresses vegetarianism's cultural, historical, and philosophical background, details vegetarianism's impact on one's living and thinking, and relates vegetarianism to classical and recent defenses of the moral status of animals.

Demonstrating how a vegetarian diet is related to our awareness of the world and our ethical outlook on life, Fox looks at the different kinds of vegetarian commitments people make and their reasons for making them. In chapters that address such issues as the experiences, emotions, and grounds that are part of choosing vegetarianism, Fox discusses not only good health, animal suffering, and the environmental impacts of meat production, but such issues as the meaning of food, world hunger, religion and spirituality, and, significantly, the links shared between vegetarianism and other human rights movements and ideologies, particularly feminism. In an extensive chapter that addresses arguments made by advocates of meat-eating, Fox speaks to claims of humans as natural carnivores, animals as replaceable, and vegetarians as anti-feminist. He also addresses arguments surrounding the eating habits

of indigenous peoples, eating free-range animals, and carnivorous behavior among animals. The most complete examination of the vegetarian outlook to date, Deep Vegetarianism reveals the broad range of philosophical views that contribute to such a

choice. It recognizes, and calls for, a conscious awareness of—and an individual responsibility to—the issues that exist in the moral, political, and social spheres of our existence.

With its lively and controversial discussion, Deep Vegetarianism promises to appeal to anyone looking to explore the relationship between dietary choice, lifestyle, the treatment of animals and the environment,

and personal ethical responsibility. It will also be particularly useful for students and teachers of moral philosophy, ethics, religion, comparative cultures, ecology, and feminism.
