HeidelbergCement presents the “Quarry Life Award”

“HeidelbergCement has a long history in biodiversity management.

We now hold these awards as a way to further develop best practices and raise awareness around the high value of biodiversity in quarries. This is also a way to further demonstrate that mining activities are fully compatible with nature protection.”

With quarries being essential to our business, it is important that we take care how our operations interact within the nature where we work. We want to be seen as a responsible mining company actively delivering a prominent positive contribution to biodiversity.”

What is the Quarry Life Award? 1/2

A contest idea arose in 2011 to raise the knowledge about biodiversity

in mining sites.

HeidelbergCement launched the first international scientific and

educational competition in 2012.

Open for students and young researchers to propose projects on

biodiversity related topics (scientific research, management, education,

rehabilitation/reclamation).

The competition runs simultaneously in 22 countries

70 HeidelbergCement participating quarries

What is the Quarry Life Award? 2/2

A Two stage competition:

Selection of 5 Project Proposals in each national contest

All submitted Project Proposals are evaluated by a national jury.

5 Project Proposals are selected in each contest to enter into the research

and development phase (field work during 6 months)

Each competing project has a project page on the website to promote and

keep posting updates and photos.

Based on Final Project Reports each National jury selects

the national Award winners

All Projects also run simultaneously at international level

– The International Jury members analyse and evaluate all competing projects

worldwide to award the best ones at international level.
