Birth Date: 18.06.1960University of Mannheim, GermanyGeneral Director of HeidelbergCement Caucasus since 2010

    - HeidelbergCement TbilisiMarathon is getting more popular each year. How did you come up with the idea?

    - Some four years ago I started my work here as the Country Manager of HeidelbergCement. I had a look at every department as well as the Marketing and PR Department, we were presented in Rugby and Soccer but I realized that the fact was not well known even to our own employees. So I told my management team to think about something that is more popular and that is more linked to the core values of HeidelbergCement. To be honest, I like soccer and I have become a rugby fan since I came to Georgia, but I think this does not fi t perfectly to the values of HeidelbergCement.

There are three pillars in our company mission: economy, ecology and corporate social responsibility. Social responsibility means a lot of things: responsibility to your employees that they have a secure job and an appropriate salary as well as taking care of the health and safety standards inside the company. In Germany

  • 5and everywhere we work people gain weight after starting the job. And its no different in Georgia. People eat more than they should, so I thought we could do something to promote a healthy life style not only for our people but also for the social environment in Tbilisi, Georgia. In addition, I had a desire to do something for charity. Therefore I fi nally decided to combined my ideas in one project.

What we came up with was the decision to do something for the mission that Heidelberg is following and at the same have something that would make nice marketing than just one football team with a HeidelbergCement logo on its shirts. Four years ago, I realized that nobody was running and nobody was jogging in Tbilisi, then when I went to the hippodrome to run I found that there were 15-20 other people running, but they were not Georgians. Then, I decided to organize a marathon to bring more people into a jogging mode for health without spending a lot of money on a gym: I said, Come on lets create such an event and lets see whether we can make a tradition out of it.

    - How would you assess the results of the Tbilisi Marathon? Did it meet your expectations?

    - Three years ago when we started the Marathon, people told me that we could not get more than 100 people

  • 6involved in such an event. And from that only 10% would be Georgian. In fact, we had 500 in the fi rst year and from that, 200 were expats and 300 were people from Georgia. Young people of age 12-15 years right up to elderly Georgians of 70 years old ran in our marathon. At the beginning, I told my management team that I expected all of them to get involved with the marathon in an active way: that if they couldnt run, just to walk. As it is possible for the average person to walk 21 km in four hours, so a lot of people here in the company used that to do the fi rst half marathon.

The second year we had 1000 people and this year, on the third half marathon, even more people are involved in running and jogging: I see it every second morning at 7 am when I go to Tbilisi sea and run 10 km; every year and every month I see more people running there. I would say 80% are young ladies and 20% men, but it is getting more and more overall. I would not say that we are responsible for that development but nevertheless it works, people move and I feel its the same as we had several years ago in Germany when people more and more do something for that. So I am very happy to have created that tradition. In addition, every year we dedicate money from that event to charity. Last year we gave money to the Iavnana fund,

Therefore, we decided to contribute the amount received from registration for homeless children. We hope to get 1500 people participating in the Tbilisi Marathon this year and after fi ve years we would like to have 3000 people.

    - Tell us about other projects that you are proud of that HeidelbergCement has fi nanced under its social responsibility scheme.

    - There are some projects that are part of both ecology and social responsibility because they have something to do with health. What I am really proud of is that when we started business in Georgia, we took over some very old Russian cement plants of 1935 and 1950. There was no technology to reduce the air pollution then, and what comes out of the chimney from the cement plant if you dont have a fi lteris pure limestone. Kaspi was covered with that limestone and as a result was not the healthiest place to live.

We were not obliged to invest in fi lters but of course we did it, because, for us, Georgia is the same as Germany,

  • 8Hong Kong or wherever we are: we have same ecological standards everywhere. So we invested 10 mln Euros in the fi lters, which was really a large amount of money. At that time nobody understood because they said we were not obliged to do it. But for me this is a social responsibility - to keep the environment clean so that people can live there without getting harmed. So I am really proud to work for a company where things are done even if it is not requested.

Moreover, we invested money in technical education, as there was a lack of technical personnel. We sponsored The Technical University in Rustavi and we sponsored more than 100 students there over two to three years. What we have now is a vocational school- in Georgia this term was not known before. You had two possibilities when you fi nished school here: either you went to university or you went to work, but there was nothing in between. In Germany and Europe I have learnt that besides these two choices you can also learn to be an electrician, plumber, etc. We started working on this project together with two other German companies and I consider this as a big success as well. The ministries are

    - According to recent studies, consumers in Georgia are not informed and consequently do not support Corporate Social Responsibility. How would you assess this situation from your experience?

    - The biggest problem in Tbilisi is waste; the waste management has to improve. I think the government knows that and I have big hopes that new mayor David Narmania, whom we have known since he was the Minister of Infrastructure, realizes as well that waste is a problem. People are also aware that this is a problem, but they do not think about getting rid of it. The mindset of the people has to change and this is not a process of one or two years but of a generation that has to learn. When I was a child of fi ve, we dumped all of our municipality waste in a big hole and every Sunday we would go there with my father add our own rubbish to it. At the time it was forbidden to dump waste and every piece of rubbish had to be reused, this is what we learned in school from the fi rst class on. We have to avoid waste, not to use plastic bottles if you can use a glass bottle and not to use disposable plastic bags when you can take a solid one and use it 20 times. So that starts with the children, I remember when I learned such things in school and if my Mom or Dad did something wrong, I told them off How could you do that?! This is not OK. So children are passionately teaching their parents and this is

one generation already with the awareness there.

But of course we should not wait ten years. We have a concept and I hope that this will come true.

We can burn in our kilns at 1400-1500 degrees things that are better than coal (at present we use coal to heat up our kilns and spend about 30mln dollars annually on it). Old car tires are double the worth of coal for heat. If you take a plastic bottle and cut it into small pieces it is also better than coal. My goal is to develop a system with the Mayor of Tbilisi that makes us separate the plastic bottles, the tiers and all of that in separate places, and then dump it in our kilns instead of into the air or soil. People think that it will cause a lot of smell, but those 10 mln euro fi lters takes away that air pollution factor. This is the technological way throughout Europe, and Europe has really tough legislations, so I just want to bring here what we have already in other countries and avoid the situation of our children in 20 years time having to dig out the waste that you and me produce over those 20 years because dumping is poison for the soil and for the water that our children will drink. We have to avoid it; we should stop and thats what will, for me and for HeidelbergCement, be the biggest challenge for the next two to three years.

    - What are the future plans for the company?

    - The Georgian cement market is growing. In the last four years alone, I have personally witnessed the cement demand double. It came down dramatically after the Russo-Georgian War when the total demand in Georgia was around 900000 tons of cement for the whole country.

This year it will be 1.8 million. Our production is more than 2mln, but if it goes on growing like it is, in the next 2-3 years we will have a problem satisfying the market. Therefore, we in HeidelbergCement have already decided to construct an additional kiln line in Kaspi. That will be an investment of around 100mln Euros, but the board in Heidelberg, and me as well, are very convinced about the future development of Georgia. We are convinced that Georgia will make its way forward as a hub in the Caucasus region and that the best days of Georgia are still to come. Thats my feeling and you dont have to be optimist to think like that.

With its ongoing infrastructure projects, Georgia can go up from 1.8 to three and nevertheless we can deliver the necessary cement. We are in the tendering process now, because we need a lot of equipment from Germany, and partially from China. In November we hope to put all the things on the table so we can make decisions, and then construction work will begin. In January we hope to start up a big cement plant; it takes two years to make that additional one kiln and in 2017 we will have the capacity of 3 mln tons.

Somebody could call us monopolists. I wish it was like that but it is not because cement here in the Caucasus region crosses borders - we have high competition from Turkey, from Armenia and one year ago Iran came onto our market with dumping prices. Whenever we have a price increase that is a little bit high, the competition raises over us and it is a challenge, because sometimes the production cost increases faster than the price. So the results are not satisfactory - from the fi rst day to today we are still not happy with the results, but we are a company that looks to the next 15 years. We have already invested 300mln dollars and if you invest so much, you cant expect that in two or three years you will get it back; we calculate in 20-30 years. For fi rst seven years we are not quite successful, but the next years are sure to be.

Diligence, purposefulness, precise completion of tasks, moderate temper and excellent communication skills these are qualities that have helped Irakli Makharoblidze to advance in his career.

He started working at his desired company in 2008, after getting through the one-year internship program. Later, he changed several positions: was Procurement Director for two years and in August 2013 took the vacant position of Sales and Marketing Director. According to him, HeidelbergCement is a company which takes care of the development of future managers. This is why his career growth can be attributed to the internal system of the organization.

Note: HeidelbergCement Group has been operating in Georgia since 2006 and is represented by two cement production companies Kartuli Cementi Ltd (Rustavi plant) and HeidelbergCement Georgia (former SaqCementi). Since 2007, the companies Kartuli Cementi and HeidelbergCement Georgia have been producing under a common trademark.

on the global market achieves its goal through the joint work of 53 thousand employees in 2500 enterprises in 40 countries throughout the world.

Economy, ecology and social responsibility these are three fundamental components that the companys success formula is based on.

Irakli Makharoblidze, Sales and Marketing Director of HeidelbergCement Caucasus:

HeidelbergCement is a daughter company of a German organization which entered the Georgian market in 2006. Today, the company operates Kaspi, Rustavi and Kartuli Cementi plants and production in Poti, as well as HeidelbergBeton, which runs nine concrete plants in different parts of Georgia.

The company actively works on environment protection issues and towards establishing a healthy lifestyle amongst people. At this stage, interesting projects are underway in two directions.

The fi rst, Quarry Life Award, is oriented on environment protection issues. It is held all over the world and aims to form a development plan for the quarries operated by us. In particular, each participant of the contest presents his/her view of returning the quarries to their original

form, i.e. regaining the biodiversity that existed before our interference. This contest is now being held for the third time. Currently fi ve projects are being considered for local as well as global contests. The winner of the global contest will receive 30 000 Euros, while the tree fi nalists of the local contest will also get monetary prizes. We are trying our best to actually implement the presented projects. We have a precedent for that. Rare species of trees and plants have been planted in our quarries. Anyone willing can go and check it out.In order to participate in the contest, it is not necessary to work for our organization. Anyone willing can fi ll in the application form. We are trying to ensure public awareness through an active information campaign: press conferences are held, press releases are posted on the website and on social networks; information is sent to universities, scientifi c circles, ministries, etc. We are interested in reaching more people and receiving more applications. This will ensure the presenting of a higher quality project to the global jury.

    - How active are people?

    - They are quite active; in terms of involvement and the number of website visitors, Georgia takes a leading place

among the groups member countries. Students and schoolchildren participate in the contest, which makes us very happy. It is additional stimulus for them receiving a monetary prize, as well as being good practice for future career prospects.

    - You mentioned another project

    - Yes, TbilisiMarathon. In Germany, the city of Heidelberg has a tradition. Every year a half marathon of 21 km is organized and we decided to hold a similar project in Georgia. As you might know, we have the image of a country that does not lead a healthy lifestyle, and this is why we developed a similar project that has been successfully implemented- this year will be the third such event. Last year, for example, 1500 people were registered. This year will be the third TbilisiMarathon. We expect both local and foreign participants. It is a very impressive sight- starting at 10 a.m. and fi nishing at about 2 p.m. However, we take into consideration that some people may need more time to cover the distance, which is why a second part starts afterwards, which includes concerts and various entertainment activities.

I would like point out here that there is no commercial interest for our company in this project. The marathon is of a 100% charitable nature. We fund 100% of it as well as having sponsors, supporters, and partner organizations. We have a registration fee for the marathon, a symbolic 10 Gel, which in the end is doubled by us and given completely to charity. During the two previous years we successfully cooperated with the Iavnana Fund, which purchased living space for homeless people with the money and gave them homes. I would like to thank them again very much for this. This time we are focusing on children.

    - You are actively taking parts of social-related activities; establish healthy lifestyle and tackle

environmental issues. What kind of additional procedures does the company conduct?

The company has security procedures. There are standards and we follow these standards precisely.

There is constant monitoring. We have physicians; all of the employees have health insurance, and each employee has a very good insurance package. We do not differentiate in this regard. The a glass of milk principle still exists. Diners on the factory territories meet European standards. Everything is subject to maximal control.

I would like to mention about transports, Until 2008, in Georgia we used old cars to transport cement, especially bulk cement. HeidelbergCement was the fi rst to give a signal to the market that it was necessary to bring in modern cars to the market. It was much more secure and refi ned and was fi nancially justifi ed as old cars could transport 10-15 tons of cement while modern cars can carry 30 tons. In regards to packed cement, it is packed in craft paper; no polyethylene is used as it contradicts with the companys internal environment protection norms.

As for HeidelbergBeton, all plants are equipped with concrete recycling machines, which return secondary water and sand to production again; therefore, losses are minimized and the environment is not polluted. Thus, we maximally try to completely follow all modern standards in our fi eld.

In the end, I would like to outline that in HeidelbergCement factories in Europe and in different parts of the world, 20-30 per cent of all fuel is alternative fuel. For Clinker production we process huge kiln that need energy. This is our biggest expense. At this stage we use coal, which we receive from the Tkibuli coal mine. I think alternative fuel has no alternative in the future. The whole world is moving in that direction. In Georgia, there is almost no practice of that. However, we work actively with ministries, embassies, etc. in order to stimulate the development of this line. We are potential consumers that can utilize various wastes without harming nature such as municipal waste, which is still buried in land, and tires that also make a good fuel. If, to conclude, it is possible to collect municipal waste and tires at the same spot and to process them, we will gladly enroll in this chain. This is an initiative that can bring incredible results in order to improve the environment ecologically. Certain directions have already been outlined. I hope soon it will be possible to implement this commonly benefi cial initiative.

Formality is defended, support is gained- Tbilisi City Hall and HeidelbergCement have agreed on a collaboration.

Everything was settled very easily, without any problems. The company asked permission to hold TbilisiMarathon on the territory of Tbilisi Sea and received overwhelming departmental support.

That said, in truth nobody expected any obstacles. It was clear from the beginning that the initiators of the project and the Mayor of Tbilisi have the same aims. Promoting a healthy lifestyle is not unfamiliar for David Narmania. He started to take care of the ecological environment and fresh air when he was candidate for Mayor and he wrote this into the plan of his pre-election program, too. Nowadays, despite some diffi culties, he is working to fulfi ll the promises he gave to the people which included planting millions of trees.

Mayor of Tbilisi, David Narmania: My job is my greatest concern. I feel a great responsibility. For me, the place where I work and people with whom I work are very

We should live correctly, follow a healthy life-style, help other people and compete with each other in this way

important to me. Generally, strong relations are always benefi cial in any business. When those around me are also my friends, I can be sure that they will regulate everything perfectly and do their best to achieve a maximum result, so I feel really calm.

The projects of Tbilisi City Hall are divided into two parts: the fi rst is oriented on building and improving the infrastructure and the second is fi nanced with the budget and its projects are connected to health care and social security. The main accent is on the projects connected to the development of the city, especially to the infrastructure: the road infrastructure is in a bad condition, so rehabilitation of some of the roads are being regularized with this years budget, the rest will be foreseen in the budget of next year. We are involved very actively in the preparative works of the European Youth Olympic Festival 2015. We are beginning to work on a local plan and, besides Georgian workgroups, we are going to invite foreigners and share their experiences, too. The projects connected to the development of the city and Greenery-Planting will be on a very wide scale, meaning the progressing of recreation zones, and the planting of new trees throughout the city. This year, more than 25000

trees will be planted before autumn, but for the next year this project will be much more active. The Palace of Pupils and Youth will also participate in such activity. Tbilisi City Hall itself will take responsibility for looking after the newly-planted trees. One of the most wide-scale projects will be the initiative of development of the dendrological park on the territory adjacent to Tbilisi Sea. We are currently working on a plan for this project and from spring we will start to be very active towards this. There are plenty of other projects planned, and Tbilisi City Hall promises that everything will be realized.

He has a lot to deal with as well as diffi culties. He is obliged to be in continuous good shape. He manages this with physical activity and a balanced character. For three years, three times a week, he has been getting up early and swimming. He claims that it wouldnt be possible for him to work without this regime and conditions.

David Narmania: Every individual should take care of his own physical development and keep in good shape. I advise my colleagues to join me in swimming. It is a great form of sport, but other sports are no less effective. It is important to start taking care of yourself

David Narmania: We should live correctly, follow a healthy lifestyle, help other people and compete with each other in this way

from an early age, but I know that for many people it is inaccessible. Exactly because of this, we should try to create all the appropriate conditions for them: on the one hand we should try to develop different kinds of sport objects and to create proper infrastructure, and on the other hand we should think about conducting youth campaigns. To this purpose, TbilisiMarathon, organized by HeidelbergCement, is very important. As you know, this arrangement has a double conception: popularization of a healthy lifestyle and a charity character. We should call each other out to live correctly, follow a healthy lifestyle, help other people and compete with each other in this way.

He emulates others in working, sharing of responsibility and in loving of humanity, too. It is not hard for him to keep a level head: despite stressful situations and high pressure, he loses his temper very seldom which helps him to perceive and direct the situations correctly.

This time, he wont be able to participate in TbilisiMarathon, as he is expecting a lot of guests for the Tbilisoba festival on 25th of October - but Tbilisi City Hall itself will be very active in the event. Next time, the Mayor of Tbilisi has said he will also compete with other participants of the half marathon. David Narmania: My collaboration with HeidelbergCement started from the period of my appointment as a Minister of Regional Development and Infrustructure of Georgia - the products of this company have been used in various construction works. So when the representatives of the company offered to collaborate with us in the project of TbilisiMarathon, of course we immediately agreed.

Tbilisi City Hall will settle the matters connected to the organization of transport movement on the territory of the half marathon, and with the help of administrative police, it will be regulated very well during the event. We will also provide barriers for security and serve people with our buses to take them up to Tbilisi Sea. To my mind, with such concrete efforts, the event is sure to be a success.

The popularization of healthy lifestyles and charity - these are the fundamental aims of the traditional TbilisiMarathon being organized by HeidelbergCement. Each member of this event has internalized very well the advantages of this useful and entertaining process.

    Something about HeidelbergCement

On the global market of manufacturing building materials, HeidelbergCement is one of the acknowledged leaders in the world. It is one of the three best companies producing cement and concrete on a world scale. The company employs about 53,000 people in 2,500 locations in more than 40 countries.

Entering the Georgian market, the company immediately started arranging educational, environmental and charity projects. To avoid pollution, HeidelbergCement introduced fi lters, spending around 12 million Lari in the factories of Kaspi and Rustavi (in 2008-2009). It took the responsibility for fi nancing an engineering faculty in Rustavi (in 2009-2010), and has carried out many other projects too (rugby, Rustavi Bulls, FC Dila Gori) and since 2011 it has been working on the project Quarry Life Award which supports the biodiversity of quarries.

Holding a half marathon in Tbilisi was the idea of the general director of HeidelbergCement. Society was immediately charmed by the sporting activity with its charitable aims and, after a successful start, TbilisiMarathon has become a popular annual event.

    Social responsibility and charity

Social responsibility is the main aspect of corporative politics and free will of the company HeidelbergCement. Besides the popularizing of healthy life, one of the important aims of the TbilisiMarathon is charity, and everyone involved in the event automatically contributes to others. This process is very simple - for the registration all who wish to participate in the half marathon must pay 10 GEL. The fi nal total of received money will be doubled by HeidelbergCement and given in full to preselected benefi ciaries. It must be said that the social projects of the company are held to help those people who need fi nancial support more than others: in March of 2014, 65,000 GEL was transferred to the benefi ciaries of the Iavnana Fund. This year, the fund raised from TbilisiMarathon will be used for building a house for children in need in Bediani, Georgia.

    The history of the TbilisiMarathon

TbilisiMarathon already has international status and encourages the popularization of our country as well as contributing to the development of tourism.

The results of the half marathon are counted by the system of German company Mika Timing, approved in the marathons of Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin. The event is carried out with the patronage of the German embassy and Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia.

The fi rst time the event was held was the 28th of October, 2012 and more than 500 people took part. The following year, the second TbilisiMarathon once again held at the end of October, involved considerably more participants- about 1,500 members were registered, and not only Georgians, but also foreign guests and representatives of embassies and business companies.

The record fi xed during the TbilisiMarathon is 1:14:00 hours.

Each year the event has been very well planned, and organized to a high standard.

As in previous years, the charity half marathon organized by HeidelbergCement, this year will take place traditionally on the territory near Tbilisi Sea. The event will be held on 25th of October. This time, with the help of sponsor organizations, HeidelbergCement is offering more services to registrants - they will have water and all the necessary products, as well as a full medical service provided by professional doctors and physiotherapists.

    The history of marathon racing

According to legend, in the year 490 BC, after the war, a Greek warrior Pheidippides ran without a moments respite from the city of Marathon to Athens, to inform Greeks about their victory. Be happy Athenians, we have won the war! - these were the last words of the warrior, for after running 42 kilometers, Pheidippides fell down unconscious. This legend has no basis in fact and has no proof in documentary sources - the fi rst time this history was told was in the fi rst century A.D, in the essay of Plutarch - The Glory of Athens, 550 years after the supposed event.

In 1896 the international Olympic committee estimated the distance from the place of battle in Marathon to Athens and it was 34.5 kilometers. The fi rst modern Marathons were held exactly from Marathon to Athens.

Arranging this Marathon was the idea of French philologist Michelle Brael - who wanted the discipline to be added to the program of the Olympic games held in Athens in 1896. His idea was supported by a number of Greek organizers, as well as by the founder of the modern Olympic games - Pierre De Coubertin.

Nowadays, every year around the globe, about 800 Marathons are held, the most prestigious of which are the Marathons of Boston, New York, Chicago, London and Berlin.

For centuries people have been trying to tailor nature to their own needs; but in most cases reality has proved to be vice versa people had to develop skills and adjust their abilities to natural factors. In the 21st century, intensifi cation of human attempts strengthened the existing position even more and people were made to obey lifestyles. Now the whole world has come together in trying to establish a healthy lifestyle using existing natural resources and the adaptation skill of human nature. Georgians are no exception.

Among individual private organizations and state structural units, the Georgian Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs is actively involved in such processes. Apart from many implemented and upcoming projects focused on making people more sports active and supporting healthy lifestyles, the structure actively participates in projects initiated by private companies, including HeidelbergCements marathon.

Levan Kipiani, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs: First of all, I would like to express my gratitude for the relationship that has been established between the Ministry and HeidelbergCement. Truly incredible projects have been implemented. Last year there were up to 1500 registered

marathoners and around 800 people participated. The project serves the purpose of establishing healthy lifestyles; and it is highly welcomed and appreciated when such activities are initiated by private companies. We gladly enrolled in the organization of the project and presented our team, which had quite a successful run last year. One of the participants even got a prize. From the Ministry 15-20 people were involved, representing various departments and units. What is particularly notable is that pensioners and women also participated in the marathon. Unfortunately, an earlier injury prevented me from running

I would like to point out that I will always support similar projects and will gladly be part of it. If I cannot run for certain reasons, I can at least take a start. I think the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs should be leading a healthy way of life. It is very important and it is crucial to share that social responsibility for society.

    - At this stage, due to your position, you have to spread your attention across many sports whereas you were mostly into football in the past. How do you do that? Is football still your main interest?

    - The fact that I was a footballer does not mean that I should pay less attention to other kinds of sports. However, public interest is directed towards my attitude to football. More public attention tends to be given to football and more involvement, something which is seen around the globe and which relates to the specifi cs and scale of the sport. As you know, there are many problems in this sphere which is why we will have to spend more energy on it. Issues in the sphere of football need complex resolution. By resolving one specifi c issue, you do not

Why Levan Kipiani enrolled in the marathon, and planned projects of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs before 2020

resolve all problems within the sphere- its large scale alone creates problems. But I am an optimist by nature and I will defi nitely do my best in order to put everything on track in Georgia. My team will help me in that. I would like to point out here that at the Ministry a very good, productive and creative team has been formed which does everything in order to meet expectations. Being open to the public helps us in that. Our doors are practically never closed. Apart from the fact that we have open hours for the public every week, I talk to about 20-30 people every day.

    - Have you planned any specifi c new projects to encourage youngsters, lets say, in public schools, youth centers, etc.?

    - There are many projects and we discuss every day when and how they should be implemented. Focusing on children and youngsters is of utmost importance. For this purpose we pay particular attention to public schools and youth organizations. For example, in secondary educational institutions we plan to strengthen sports. There are many hindering points, such as lack of appropriate infrastructure This is not a one-day problem to solve. Therefore, its solution is distributed over time. Despite this, I think we will start bringing active sports to public schools next year. These are entertainment sports which should be present at secondary schools.

In order to develop various kinds of sport, it is necessary

to improve the infrastructure, which has unfortunately been destroyed. And today we do not have standard, international level infrastructure. We are trying to improve the situation. For example, the building of the Olympic village will be fi nished next year; there will be a pool of high standards, different halls and this will be a step forward in this direction

There is the World Handball Championship 2017 project, which involves building mini sports palaces in different regions, each to include the necessary infrastructure for the development of sports.

The Ministry of Economy presented a very interesting project, which considers installing cannons on the Gudauri-Bakuriani territory. Cannons are machines ensuring the longer life of snow on the surface. Schools should be set up in skiing regions schools and this will be a step forward in terms of developing skiing and tourism as well.

Construction of youth centers is planned in different regions, alongside the introduction of informal education for youngsters and school children These are the issues that we should consistently work on in the coming years and I think by 2020 they will be completed.

Moreover, every year we implement different projects and fund youth initiatives. We have a fund which specifi cally grants to youth organizations.

Introducing informal education is also very important. It is necessary to establish a correct European model institution which will teach school teachers, trainers, sports doctors, sports reporters, sports lawyers These are the issues that we have started working on and we have taken care that all such plans are implemented. Thus, there is a lot to be done

I would like to thank all the ministries that are involved in projects with us the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Economy

And I would like to thank HeidelbergCement for the work it is doing. By participating in the activities, the runs that HeidelbergCement is organizing, we should encourage the public to be charitable and we should set them an example: we should ingrain a love for sports, we should share social responsibility, and we should help the people that need it most of all this should be the main motivation for everyone.

The popularization of a healthy lifestyle and a variety of social initiatives these are the projects in which Wissol Group is involved, not for future profi t but as a part of their social responsibility. PR and corporate liability manager Rusudan Kbilashvili, realizes very well the meaning of looking after society, and how important the role of large companies and business groups is in the development and progress of a country. So, she never refuses to collaborate when offered such projects.

TbilisiMarathon is one such project which Wissol Group is participating in with great pleasure.

Rusudan Kbilashvili: In general, it is not strange for Wissol Group to aim towards and promote healthy lifestyles. We have invested more than 30 million Laris in such projects. We have our own football and rugby teams and conduct internal championships on a regular basis. So, its not unfamiliar for us to popularize healthy lifestyles or to appeal to society to live healthily. This is why we chose to support the offer from HeidelbergCement with great pleasure. To my mind, TbilisiMarathon is one of the best organized charity events of the year.

Regarding our participation, the groups of our affi liated companies will take part: Wissoli (our importer and distributer of oil), Smart (the supermarket chain that unites 13 objects ), Wendys (the American restaurant chain) and Vianor (the car service chain which has international partners and regular varied offers for its consumers).

Wissol Group, with these four companies, aims to participate in the marathon and support the charity, so making a healthy lifestyle more of a reality.

We will take part in this marathon in other way, too: we will try to make the right circumstances for marathon runners by arranging active informative support with help from our affi liated companies and various communication channels. Wissol Group is also involved in in one of the largest current instructive charity projects Books For Every Village. This is an initiative of two youth organizations Students Unity and Davitiani and with our help this project became very popular. The process is the following we collect books in Wissol, Smart and Wendys and then give those books to the national library, where they sort them. We then send them to villages with the help of an itinerant library, which is really very beautiful. As for the type of books, we get information from Davitiani regarding the kinds of books libraries of different villages need and we send them what they want. We have an interesting form of collaboration with Palitra Media: as the recieved spoilt sheet cannot be send straight to the libraries, with the help of Palitra, we convert these spoilt sheet into new books which we send to the regions. The effectiveness and duration of this project ultimately depends on the people. Naturally, we are not able to supply all the villages with our own resources, so we appeal to society to be active in the collection and to give us as many books as possible, by dropping them in at Wissol, Smart and Wendys, so that we can supply all the villages.

We have one more interesting project in the supermarkets of Smart you can buy products of social manufacture. We want people to have more desire to manufacture more products. At present you can fi nd the products of two social producers: Sault from Svaneti called Zesxo, and very beautiful wooden toys produced by Davitiani. I think people should take more responsibility in producing such products, so we always try to support and help their realization.

We have plenty of other very interesting projects. We collaborate very actively with the charity fund Iavnana. And soon, as I mentioned above, we are taking part in the charity marathon organized by HeidelbergCement. It is the third time this has been set up, but this is our fi rst experience of collaboration. I must mention that we always had a great respect towards this event and value all such initiatives. It must be said that both previous TbilisiMarathon events were conducted to a very high quality. Thanks to a very good information campaign, the number of participants was very high, too. So, Im extremely happy that we received an offer to collaborate: we also offered them our initiatives with great pleasure, and, with our resources, the event is sure to become even more interesting.

Bediani foster care childrens home is separated into several units and children live together with their teachers.

First, they found themselves in the Dzegvi childrens home and then moved to Bediani.

Now, like other inhabitants, they work in their own agricultural industries, go to public schools, go on excursions, hiking tours or enjoy other specifi c events together with their peers. The state, and occasionally private companies, international donor organizations and simply kind people take care of them

Zviad Khapava, Director of the childrens home: Since 1995, children lacking guardianship were gathered in the village Dzegvi of the Mtskheta district. These were mostly children living on the street and earning their bread through theft and/or begging. There were families, the members of which had no contact with each other. In some cases, children that settled in Dzegvi and, unlike on the street, felt warmth and care, asked to bring their friends, then family members. First they told horrible

stories of orphanages; then it appeared that many of them did actually have parents. Thanks to the Dzegvi childrens home, families were reunited. There are a few such families that still live there.

    - Why did you leave Dzegvi?

    - One of the reasons was adaptation to the public. We did not want children to be cast away. In Dzegvi, even the school was within the territory of the childrens home. Everything happened inside the borders. But now children have the opportunity to attend public schools- their lifestyle is just like that of a typical village resident: they go to school, they go fi shing, play football in the playground, they go on excursions, hiking tours, etc. Although we took them on excursions before, they were still watching everything from afar In Dzegvi, the living conditions might have been better but here there are many more points of contact with the outer world.

Now 12 children live in the childrens home. The youngest turned eight just the other day. Children stay with us until they fi nish secondary school. There are three more families where children live with their biological parents.

    - As for houses, these are regular small cottages which were built in the 1950s. Each of them has a small yard with vegetable plots where they grow cucumbers, tomatoes, greens, etc. The children are involved in all that. It is not necessary for every child to live with exactly the same regime. One child can come late, another earlier. The agenda and food is not exactly the same either. Someone may feel like an omelet and not a meatball. All of that is taken into consideration. With 12 children it is not so hard

    - Are you fully funded from the state budget?

    - No, the state gives money for food and hygiene items. For the rest- fuel, furniture, construction, household items, etc. we try to fi nd sponsors. Our friends and acquaintances help us mobilize funds. There are cases when specifi c companies and individuals express their wish to help the children, give presents, etc.

    - One such company is HeidelbergCement, which at this stage plans to transfer money to your children. As far as I know, the money raised through the charity marathon initiated and organized by HeidelbergCement, will be doubled and transferred to you.

    - Yes, thats right and I would like to thank the company representatives for suggesting this great idea. Organizing a marathon with double goals is a very interesting and noble thing. It does not only help establish a healthy lifestyle but has charitable meaning and this is very important. The attitude of the participants is noteworthy. It is so good that individuals as well as companies realize the social responsibility that they have for their fellow citizens, socially vulnerable persons and children. I am glad that each of them is actively involved in the event organized by HeidelbergCement. Upon the initiative of HeidelbergCement, its authorities and regular employees, we will manage to do important things for our children, as children are the future of our country and taking care of them is the responsibility of us all.

We already know how we will spend the money transferred by HeidelbergCement. Our houses are very shabby and all are in need of repairs. Last year we started repair works, since one of the buildings was on the verge of collapse- the wooden construction was old and damp and it was dangerous to live there. I started construction myself and asked friends for help. Youngsters who grew up with us helped us with the physical work, too. But we could not fi nish the construction and I hope we will do it this year. Now we are building a two-storey house. On one fl oor there will be a dining-room, a bedroom and a bathroom plus an entrance; on the second fl oor a conference hall which will be a place to show fi lms to the children, give them trainings and hold other events. Before we didnt have the space or the opportunity for that.

Zviad Khapava started working at the Dzegvi Childrens Home as a volunteer upon fi nishing secondary school. He fi rst accompanied his friend, and then started to get on with with the children- enjoying the warmth he felt from them. As a student, he visited the home parallel to lectures and then later moved there.

Zviad Khapava: We took about 60 children. Over the years, following the cut in funds, the number of children decreased. The number of teachers decreased as well. Everyone was a volunteer there (working for no salary) and it is still so.

Bediani childrens home teachers work at schools and this is how they earn money. Compared to others, Zviad is privileged he teaches history at a local public school and parallel to it is a local governor representative of the Tsalka Municipality in the Bediani community.

Zviad Khapava: It helps me a lot to be informed about everything and thanks to it our children get the chance to participate in almost every event, action and concert. For example, this year we sent them to an archeological

expedition; they returned very happy. I try to do the same for the village population. This is a small settlement and everything together is not so hard to manage. Besides, it helps them have contact with each other. Now our childrens home children are part of Bediani, just like each of the residents

    - You have 12 children Do you think of increasing the number? Even now, there are many children lacking carers and on the street

    - Unfortunately, our current fi nancial resources do not allow us to take more. We can have a maximum of 15 children. However, we take care of children distributed into families as well and they participate in all the activities. Now a commission will arrive, probably in fall, that will decide how many children the childrens home will be able to accept; everything will happen under state supervision. If our resources increase, then of course we will not refuse to take more children. So far, we are doing our best to fi nd resources to support the children that we care for; time will show the rest

Each marathoner will have highly professional medical service

Tatishvili started running when he was a student, but took part in a Marathon only at the age of 49. His decision was very spontaneous; one day he got up and changed his professional activity into a sporting activity. Everything happened in a very simple, unrehearsed way: There was a race against breast cancer on Turtle lake organized by the fi rst lady of that time - Sandra Rulovs. Tatishvili, with others, consulted people there. He became immediately charmed with such mass activity. So, he very simply went, changed his clothes and in spite of an earlier leg injury, took part in the Marathon. Since then he has participated in 28 Marathons.

David Tatishvili, director of the Sports Medicine and Redical Rehabilitation Centre - Health Palace: Ive loved sport since my childhood. Actually, Ive never been very tall, but I played basketball, and when I became a student I started to run regularly. Later, I met sports doctor Tea Adamia - a great surprise for me, as I had been trying to solve my leg injury for a very long time, but with no result. So, with the help of Tea, my leg became stronger and in that condition I was able to run a greater number of Marathons. Now, Im still under supervision of the sports doctors Tea Adamia, along with George Lomidze. Every human has a special love, an ambition to do something, Ill soon turn 53 and I have a desire to achieve some high goals in Georgia as well as in the international arena. But I have realized very well that, without the help of my

doctors, it would be impossible. At present he is preparing for TbilisiMarathon which will be held on 25th of October. In the previous Marathon, Tatishvili wasnt in Tbilisi, so he was very sorry to not be able to take a part in the event. Even though, the team of David Tatishvili Medical Centre did participate. This year, he put off his whole schedule in order to be free for the 2014 race.

Whats more, he is planning to have a double collaboration with HeidelbergCement: not only will he be running in the half marathon with his team, but also doctors and physiotherapists who work for Health Palace, will be on hand to serve the race as needed.

David Tatishvili: I must mention that HeidelbergCement has arranged this project very professionally. It is very close to European standards particularly from time monitoring to our medical service. Consequently, it is a great pleasure for us to be part of such a great arrangement.

This year we planned to serve TbilisiMarathon very professionally. 21 kilometres is not a small distance, so it is naturally associated with many diffi culties, and health problems may often occur. So, mere diligence and enthusiasm is not enough - its very important for the event to have a highly qualifi ed team of doctors.

I know that a lot of companies are participating in the

half marathon and all of them do their best for the event to be held on a very high level. Naturally, this quality will increase the number of participants and the risks will be even greater. So, we will be maximally mobilized to give them all the necessary information and to prepare them well physically. I can say with confi dence that each member will have high professional medical service before, during and after the half marathon. All of them will be secured by the centre of rehabilitation and sports medicine - Health Palace. It must be said that the amount of participants does not scare us. We are ready: we have more than 20 well-prepared and highly qualifi ed teams, so one person doesnt have to do the work of 10 people. Nobody expects an injury but, as you know, there is no sport without injuries. We are not guaranteed against such a thing, so I think you all understand the importance of well-timed treatment and that would be impossible without good sports doctors and qualifi ed physiotherapists. This factor will condition the success of the event.

The centre of rehabilitation and sports medicine Health Palace is the number one universal complex in the sporting and regenerative direction. The centre is equipped with ultra-modern medical and rehabilitative technologies and is fully adapted for physically disabled people who can freely ove from one place to another within a centre that fully satisfi es all demands for their thorough treatment. Specialists with very highly qualifi cations, with the complex of various unique services, make it possible to recover from injuries in a very short period of time. With the correct treatment and procedures you achieve your ideal weight and body shape. The atmosphere of the centre helps you to

relax fully and stay in a good mood.David Tatishvili: Nowadays, there is no individual or team sport without hard physical preparation. You can be successful only when you have no problems with your health and this is possible only with the help of sports doctors. This was the exact aim of creating the centre of rehabilitation and sports medicine. Georgian sport needs a future. To say softly, nowadays, Georgian sports isnt what sport-lovers really need. But it must be said that there are already signs of progress - the Olympic committee and government have supported sport in many cases, but there are still many diffi culties in further development.

It must be said that people also have the wrong approach to sport here - they dont understand the meaning of a sports doctor, identifi ng doctors with masseurs. So, I can say that we are swimming upstream and its really very hard work. We have set many people on legs Nowadays, public opinion is really different, but we understand that such matters cant be solved in just days or weeks.

We can see the approach of people to sport according to this event, too. Abroad, people will pay a lot of money to take part in such events, as it is their aspiration and correct approach to sport. In Georgia everything is different

As for me, I run every morning around Turtle lake. On the whole, there are always very positive people there. But I often meet people who look at me with desperate eyes and ask me why I kill myself! They are sure that Im committing suicide just because I exercise every day. Actually, I feel perfect physically and think that Im in really good shape.

I want to mention that, with the help from our sports doctors, I have overcome many diffi culties. For example, sometimes its hard for me to start something, but I immediately remember all of the advice and exercises that my doctors have given and taught me and everything goes very well after that.

I want to use this chance and ask not only citizens of Tbilisi, but all the population of Georgia to take part in the half marathon organized by HeidelbergCement. On one hand, they will do a good deed, as this event has charitable aims, and on the other hand, they will enjoy it very much. If there is something wrong with their health, they can be assured that they are fully protected by our teams of sports doctors and physiotherapists. The more people that take part in this event, the more exciting the celebration on the 25th of October will be.

The importance of the connection between sports and medicine was discovered centuries ago. Historical evidence proves that sports medicine existed in early antiquity.

Hippocrates, Avicenna, Paracelsus and other doctors from that period used to diet, do exercises and other physical activities in order to stay fi t and healthy.

In ancient Egypt, Greece, India, Rome and China such methods were used to train Gladiators and other warriors. During the old Olympic Games, medical staff always observed how the athletes were trained and the best doctors used to be involved in this process.

Sports and medicine are liked in Georgia as well, but this topic started to become important not so very long ago.

Tea Adamia, sports doctor: besides being a huge part of a person`s lifestyle, sport is also a science which is divided into several parts. Sports medicine is one of the main parts of this science.

Our patients are not ordinary people. They are athletes who represent their country in international competitions. When these kinds of special people have some physical injury, we do our best to treat them properly.

I have never been involved in sports activities, I don`t have the right health conditions. When I became a medical student, I never knew I would become a sports doctor- it wasnt a popular fi eld back then. And when I became involved in sports medicine, I discovered that I could be involved in sports from the backstage. That was the moment when I decided to be a sports doctor.

I attained an Olympic scholarship in 2003, which gave me opportunity to serve the national Olympic team. I know all the prominent athletes personally: I know what they like, what they don`t like, how they feel pain, what they do when they need treatment, what are they afraid of. This is very important. Sports medicine means teamwork, which has one main aim- to see the athlete stand on the winning pedestal. It is not important how this result is achieved- who will sleep, who will not; who will train all night and who will not. This process is observed by the whole team.

Sport is happiness, which gets bigger when shared. I feel happy because others feel happy. The coach is happy and so are the spectators. Sports medicine brings a great deal of joy. This is the main difference from other kinds of medicine, which are mainly associated with pain and

sorrow. We work hard to maintain this spirit.

When athletes come to us, they know exactly that this is an institute where everybody supports each other. David Tatishvili, as well as all the staff and housekeepers, work equally effectively. Everybody is highly motivated. This place is like a home for all of us and all the patients. We know all the time the schedules of all the athletes, where the competitions are held, and when. We keep a close relationship with the coaches and always try to make it clear that the sports doctor is a key person in every sportsmans life.

We did our best to make sports medicine in Georgia as popular as we could. We try to help people with disabilities and try to have all the necessary equipment to hand. There are not many health centers where you can fi nd gym equipment for people with disabilities. We offer different kinds of equipment and methods to help people with special needs.

Georgians are lazy. We like sport only as spectators and as a show to watch on TV. We don`t love to get involved, dig deeper, and fi nd out more. This explains why public awareness about sports doctors is very low.

When somebody has stomach pain, he or she knows which doctor to visit. The same happens when somebody has a headache. But when somebody hurts their feet, they don`t know what to do. Nowadays, sports medicine is developed in Georgia, with professional doctors and a center for rehabilitation.

The public needs to be more informed. For instance, we participated in the marathon for people with disabilities which was held in Lopota. We tried to inform people who attended the event. We plan to do the same at every sports event. We have a very interesting strategy for our social media pages concerning our marathon in Stepantsminda. We try to do the same at the charity event organized by HeidelbergCement, which will be held in October. Our main aim is to inform society about the needs of a sports doctor. This is crucially important.

Sport is happiness, which gets bigger when shared

Proper running shoes and running every day these are the minimum requirements that Maya Azarashvili, the former sprinter, bronze medal winner at the Seoul Olympics, and champion and cup holder of the Soviet Union gives to amateur runners just starting out in the fi eld. The participants of the Tbilisi Marathon have to run 21 km, which is not easy. To be successful, she says, they need to choose proper shoes and prepare physically.

Maya Azarashvili: each person who regularly participates in marathons knows the general rules and follows them. To those who will be making a debut in the marathon I recommend they fi nd proper running clothes and shoes. If they have never run they must train every day and run at least some distance. Moving or running in non-running clothes is hard. For example, fl at shoes will not be good for running in: the heel must be higher than the toe. If race participants have a hard time choosing the proper gear, they should go to specialized sports stores where sales consultants will be able to tell them which shoes are best.

It doesnt matter how you fi nish the marathon and in which place on or off the podium you will be. The runner is already a winner when he/she decides to take part in the marathon. By making it to the fi nish line, each person becomes a winner for themselves.

    Biography

Maya Azarashvili Bronze medal winner in 400 meter relay (4x100) in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The same year she won the Soviet Union Cup; in 1986 she became the champion of the Soviet Union in the 200 meter sprint; in 1986 she won a silver medal at the Goodwill Games. On September 11, 2014 the Minister of Sports and Youth, Levan Kipiani awarded her the title of Sports Knight.

Maya Azarashvili: I set a goal when I was still a child. I believed in myself. When you start something, you must know exactly what you want to achieve. You must be able

to work hard and you must be willing to work hard. Having only one of those two qualities is not enough. Only in this way can you achieve what you want to achieve. For me I have achieved my goal.

Currently, Maya is the president of the Georgian National Federation Sport for Everyone and takes part in organizing every signifi cant sporting event. This time she is involved in the Tbilisi Marathon organized by Heidelberg Cement.

Maya Azarashvili: This is a traditional marathon. As you know, this year it will be the third time it has been held. Last year I was asked to get involved in the event and was responsible for the actual race on the half marathon day. I was also the sporting director of the event and was responsible for the track, the judges, the signs and everything else that relates to the race.

Last years event was very well organized and I hope this year it will be equally successful. It is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) such race in Georgia. Every big and beautiful city has its Marathon, like Boston, London, New York, etc. I hope that TbilisiMarathon becomes just as popular. Of course, it is not really a marathon but rather a half marathon, but for Georgia it is perfectly enough. We are not traditional runners; we are just beginning to run and to understand what health benefi ts running has. The number of runners is increasing by the day and this is great.

It is welcoming that HeidelbergCement added a humanitarian component to the race. The money raised from the event will be doubled by the company and given to charity. The money collected at this years event will be donated to the Bediani Childrens Center.

The marathon is a tourist attraction as well. Besides

  • 67

Georgians it draws foreigners. This is why it is my great wish that the marathon moves onto the streets of Tbilisi. This, of course, will need a higher level of organization and the support from the Tbilisi City Hall, Tourism Department and relevant ministries.

It usually happens that when runners arrive from different countries, they take time to see the city. It would be just great if one day was dedicated to the marathon, as a celebration for Tbilisi and its residents- the central streets of the city should be closed to traffi c and organized into a race track.

As for this years marathon, the venue is the same as last year. This has some advantages since returning runners know the track and can aim at improving their personal records.

I would like more and more people to be involved in the marathon. I really want our nation to be healthy and our citizens to be more active in terms of sports. We know how important a healthy nation is to the progress of the country. For my part, I will spare no effort to make this years marathon as big a success as it was last year.
