Queen-Size Japanese Train Tiles
When we designed this pattern as a lap quilt, we realized it would make a great queen-size quilt
if we used larger blocks and a large-scale feature print. Aster Manor by Moda is an example
of a perfect fabric line for the quilt, since it’s composed of a variety of prints that combine both
large- and small-scale designs. For additional assembly instructions and illustrations, see page

prints for blocks
15 ⁄8 yards of print for outer border
¾ yard of feature print for blocks

CuttingFrom the assorted red, pink, brown, and cream prints, cut a total of:51 strips, 3" x 42"; cut 8 of these strips (all different
prints) into 56 rectangles, 3" x 5½"
5 strips, 8" x 42"
From the feature print, cut:4 strips, 5½" x 42"; cut into 28 squares, 5½" x 5½"
From the inner-border print, cut:8 strips, 1½" x 42"
From the outer-border print, cut:9 strips, 5½" x 42"
From the binding fabric, cut:9 strips, 2½" x 42"
Creating Block A1. Sew four assorted 3" x 42" strips together to make
a strip set. Repeat with different fabrics to make a
total of 5 strip sets. Cut the strip sets into 56 units,
3" wide.
2. Sew two assorted 3" x 42" strips together to make
a strip set. Repeat with different fabrics to make a
total of 9 strip sets. Cut the strip sets into 112 units,
3" wide (56 units for block A and 56 units for block B).
3. Sew an assorted 3" x 5½" rectangle to the end of a
unit from step 2. Repeat to make 56 units.
4. Arrange the units from the previous steps as for
the lap quilt to make 28 of block A.
Creating Block B1. Sew an assorted 3" x 42" strip and an assorted 8"
x 42" strip together to make a strip set. Repeat with
different fabrics to make a total of 5 strip sets. Cut the
strip sets into 56 units, 3" wide.
2. Arrange the units from the previous steps and the
feature print 5½" squares as for the lap quilt to make
28 of block B.
Assembling the Quilt1. Sew the blocks together in eight rows with seven
blocks in each row, starting with block A in the
upper-left corner and alternating block A and
block B.
2. Sew the 1½"-wide inner-border strips together
end to end to make a continuous strip. Cut two side
inner-border strips to 1½" x 80½" and two top and
bottom inner-border strips to 1½" x 72".
3. Sew the 5½"-wide outer-border strips together end
to end to make a continuous strip. Cut two side outer-
border strips to 5½" x 82½" and two top and bottom
outer-border strips to 5½" x 92½".
