Yesterday, a new kid in the neigh-borhood showed up to play withthe boys. We’d spent the past fewdays outside, and yesterday had

been a bit cooler out so I hadn’t felt guilty aboutdeclaring it an “indoor day” and suggestingbooks or Lego play to my three sons. So we’dspent the afternoon in relative silence. I sat

curled into the corner of the couch in a patch of sunlight let in by the picture window. One sonwas in the recliner, reading a superhero book.Another son was building Legos in the playroomwhile his little brother sat cross-legged on thecarpet beside him, flipping through a book abouta gingerbread man and giggling every now andthen. When there was a knock at the door, wecollectively paused and looked up. None of usmoved to answer it. Maybe the person wouldgo away.But the kid kept knocking, so I finally put my

book down and let him in. He asked for myoldest son, so I yelled to him. He came out,wearing the slightly spaced-out, rumple-hairedlook of a person whose concentration has just

been shattered. He was friendly, but just barely.If you can, try to imagine the look on this boy’sface as my oldest child told him he would ratherstay inside. He asked the boy if he liked Legos.The boy shook his head: no. My other sons stoodby with their books in their hands, dumbfounded.The new kid stared at them. They stared back.You could hear the buzz of awkward silencegrowing louder by the minute. I glanced over,longingly, at my book on kitchen table. But,thinking guiltily about the importance of social-ization, I prodded and pushed my kids into theirsneakers and outside to play.The new boy was full of energy and not at all

shy about taking toys out of the garage to playwith. He was loud. He threw a football at one

son while kicking a soccer ball to the other. Herode on my youngest son’s Power Wheels with-out asking. He took out the baseball bats andpelted baseballs into the woods. He ran fromone activity to the next like a supercharged wind-up toy. Meanwhile, my sons watched him witha fascination that turned into dismay. One byone, they trailed off on their own. One went upinto the treehouse. Another went to the swingset. And my youngest simply sat on my lap andwatched the kid entertain himself. My childrenwere clearly miserable.When had we become so antisocial? Maybe

we hadn’t. Maybe we just always have been.Maybe we prefer books to people sometimes(though not always) because books give us some-

thing we often find lacking in the real world.Mental stimulation. Imagination. A feeling of participation that eludes us elsewhere. Thatdoesn’t make us terribly interesting, but it’s notan awful thing. I’ve been fonder of reading thanconversing all my life. How, then, could I foistsocialization onto my kids when it often feelslike torture for me?So I watched the events unfold like a scene froma novel, and I waited for resolution, unsure of what to do. I couldn’t force my sons to playwith him, but I felt bad for the kid. He was look-ing for new friends and had found us instead.Us. Three bookworms and a Lego-maniac.Soon, the boy simply left, shooting a puzzledglance over his shoulder as he rode off on hisbike.As soon as he disappeared from sight, the four

of us trudged back into the house, kicking off our sneakers and resuming our former posts, lift-ing our books into our laps like old friends.

Food Voters? America’s presidential candidates have been strangely quiet on food and agricul-tural policy. Ninety-seven percent of the three dozen food experts surveyed by POLITICO forthe Food Issue of the Agenda say the presiden-tial candidates are not doing enough in the cam-paign to address the future of food pol icy. Thatincludes everything from farm bill programsto school nutrition and health guidelines tosafety (and biotechnology) regulation. TheHuffington Post says the presidential candi-dates “don’t seem to care about our food sup-ply” because “none of them responded to oursurvey on food and ag issues.” All of which isvery strange, especially after the revelation by

a poll from Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future that announced the emergence of a new“food voter.” The survey found 92% of respondents rated sustainable food production practicesas a high personal priority. Due to campaign financial disclosures, however, we are privy toimportant stuff like which candidates spent the most on pizza from April through December of 2015. Hillary Clinton’s campaign spent the most at $9,046. Donald Trump spent $1,233. CarlyFiorina spent $0.
