After announcing a restructuring plan throughout CNC campuses, the board laid out their 2015-16 action plan.

“It doesn’t mean it’ll look the same but we’re focused on student equity,” regional principal for Quesnel campus Morgan Ross told the crowd.

City Hall - 410 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, BC, V2J 7J5 T - 250-992-2111 W - www.quesnel.caHours of operation are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday (except Statutory Holidays)

NOTICE OF SNOW REMOVALThe City’s Streets and Traffic Bylaws require all downtown businesses and property owners to

remove the ice and snow from the sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their premises PRIOR to 10:00 a.m. on each business day (Monday to Saturday inclusive). This applies to all businesses regardless of their individual operating hours or days.

The City will inspect the sidewalks to determine that sufficient cleaning has been completed. If it is determined that more attention is required, the City will attend to the matter. The minimum charge for cleaning the sidewalk is $100.00 (one hundred dollars) which will be levied against the respective property owners.

Collection of any outstanding accounts at December 31st will be made through property taxation. With rising liability claims, clean sidewalks will keep everyone out of the courts and customers downtown.

Thank you for your cooperation. Enquiries may be directed to the Bylaw Enforcement Department at 250-992-5743.

ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

The doors are open, volunteers are standing by and Dianne Greenwood said she’s getting ready for a possible increase in the number of Good Cheer hampers her crew will hand out.

“With Canfor shutting down as well as we’re seeing more addresses from out of province and a lot of new faces, we could be facing an increase from last year’s 801 hampers distributed,” Greenwood said.

Those wishing to receive a Good Cheer hamper can drop by the old Zellers store in Maple Park Mall next to Dollarama, just remember to bring ID.

And that is also the location for those wishing to donate either non-perishable food or new toys. Good Cheer is open Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

For the past 24 years, Greenwood has co-ordinated the Good Cheer Campaign and she

said in all those years they’ve never been short or run out of hamper contents.

“Somehow we always get through,” she said with a smile.

By this time, Greenwood has contacted her loyal supporters and everyone is on board.

“Cheques are starting to roll in,” she said.

Each hamper is valued at about $120 plus the toys which is a just over $96,000 if the numbers remain the same.

Each year she purchases groceries for items they don’t usually get in donations, are perishable or need topping up on the shelves in the depot. That number last year was $56,000.

Its a pretty tall order to fill that many hampers knowing this will probably be many family’s Christmas dinner, but Greenwood and her volunteers are up for the challenge and will work tirelessly for the next 17 days to get the job done.

This year hasn’t been without its challenges. They haven’t yet got

their phone installed which is way behind schedule, but Greenwood said its all good, a favourite saying of hers.

Good Cheer could never be a one-person operation and she has nothing but praise for her valued volunteers.

“Many of my volunteers have been with Good Cheer for a long time, like Nick and Audrey Presage who have logged 15 years with the program,” she said.

“Keith Watkins has been with us for about 12 years and his wife Wilma for about 10 years.”

However, one story warms her heart. Kim and Jason Crerar met at the Good Cheer depot, they now live in Prince George and have two daughters. Every year they devote the shopping weekend (major grocery sorting) and this year an additional two weekends to volunteering with Quesnel Good Cheer.

“The two girls have already put their teachers on notice they’ll be in Quesnel because they have a job with Good Cheer,”

Greenwood said with a smile.“One of the girls asked me to

stick around for the next 15 years and then she’ll take over.”

She added Kim’s employer works her schedule to accommodate her commitment to Good Cheer.

Greenwood said with no downtown parade this year, no Carolfest and no door-to-door drive, they will have to really rely on the community to help Good Cheer out, however many of the food drives such as classroom and retail stores have donation boxes and again she said, “Its all good.”

When asked what was the most pressing need, Greenwood said with a laugh, “at this point we need everything.” But she went on to say they especially need new toys.

“That’s what’s most important to the children,” she added.

So Quesnel, again dig deep for the Good Cheer program, drop off donations wherever you see the Good Cheer bins and know you are helping the less fortunate at this special time of year.

A time for Good CheerThere’s never been a better time to donate than now

Fred Richardson has been one of Dianne Greenwood’s long-time valued volunteers and each year prepares the boxes for filling with Good Cheer.

CITY COUNCIL NEWS

Tackling Climate Change at the Community Level

Mayor Bob [email protected]

This column is paid for by the City of Quesnel.410 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, BC V2J 7J5

www.quesnel.ca

As world leaders meet in Paris this week to debate op-tions for addressing climate change, there are positive signs that the energy and carbon pric-ing policies of some nations are having an ef-fect on global carbon emissions. In 2014, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions leveled off while the economy grew by 3% -- the first time that GHG emissions have not grown lockstep with growth in economic activity.

Let’s hope the world’s political leadership will see this as clear evidence we can have econom-ic growth and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and that they will set hard global targets for reducing our GHG emissions as quickly as possible.

Locally, the City is required by law to mea-sure our community’s GHG emissions and in-clude strategies to reduce them in our Official Community Plan (OCP). During our upcoming review of the City’s OCP we’ll be engaging our community in discussions about how we can more deliberately reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

The City of Quesnel is also a signatory to the BC Climate Action Charter, which requires the City, as a corporate entity, to be carbon neutral. However, this Charter needs to be reinvigorated because it provides little real impetus to reduce the City’s corporate GHG emissions.

At the community level we have a number of ways to reduce our contribution to climate change, and we need to take advantage of ev-ery one of them as quickly as possible.

On the transportation front (about 30% of overall emissions) we can maximize public transit use and improve alternatives to the use of personal vehicles. This past week we began investigating ways to improve our biking and walking trail systems throughout the City and will be investing significant capital in these trails over the next few years. In 2016, we will be con-ducting a comprehensive review of our transit system to improve ridership. Council has also in-cluded anti-idling regulations in our new Street and Traffic Bylaw.

On the “built environment” front (about 30% of overall emissions) the City will be looking at ways to improve density in our downtown core and surrounding neighborhoods through a strategic focus on incentivizing new market and affordable housing projects. We will also be discussing ways to incent builders to use more energy efficient designs and materials.

As mentioned in previous columns, the City is also conducting a comprehensive review of its waste management systems (about 7% of emissions), including looking at composting options. The methane gas produced from waste organic materials is 27 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.

While the City has limited options to curtail industrial emissions (about 30% of the total), we will be lobbying for significant provincial gov-ernment support for energy conservation and conversion investments in the industrial sector, and Council plans on taking a more proactive role in our Air Quality Roundtable.

While we must have global leadership to tackle this global issue – local leadership is also needed, and Council intends to demonstrate that leadership in the coming months and years.

with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm)We hear much about bowel cancer in the media lately. Those in the under 50 age group often don’t pay too much attention to this information because somehow bowel cancer is thought of as “an old person’s disease”. Bowel cancer can affect about 20% of people under 50. So if you have abdominal pain, blood in your stools or notice a change in your bowel habits, see your doctor. As of January 2016, Health Canada is introducing changes in the labeling of homeopathic “nosodes”. These are being sold as an alternative to vaccinations. There is no evidence they work to protect against diseases and in fact will make children more susceptible to disease if they are not being vaccinated. Speaking of vaccinations, measles is starting to rear its head again. Stats Canada reported that 89% of 2-year olds had received the recommended number of immunizations agains measles, mumps and rubella in 2013. For best protection of Canadians, this number should be 95% to prevent any outbreaks from occurring. Ensure your children received all the recommended vaccinations. The words “herd immunity” describes the ideal number of individuals in a given population who have immunity through vaccination or previous exposure to confer protection to those who aren’t immunized. This herd immunity will prevent a contagious bacteria or virus from setting up a chain of infection. If you have any questions about immunization, check with our pharmacists. We have the reliable information to keep you well-informed.

Lorne and Donella Martindale give $10,000 gift

Lorne and Donella have been considering donating to the Quesnel Community Foundation for some time but the timing never seemed right as there always seemed to be higher priorities. With the very generous offer of the anonymous donor to match gifted funds until December 15th the timing has to be right now to maximize the benefit to the community. Says Lorne, “What appeals to us the most about the Quesnel Community Foundation is the ability to give a gift to the community which last forever . . . that’s right . . . forever. All of the local charities are great and deserving of any, and all, gifts for immediate needs, but the Quesnel Community Foundation keeps on giving.”Lorne and Donella (nee Fraser) have lived in Quesnel for 65 years and are proud to call it home. “The things that make us most proud of Quesnel” comments Lorne “are all of the great people in the community with so many we call friends. The setting for the community is great and the 4 seasons add to everything a person wants to participate in. I’m proud of the fact that so many Quesnelites keep in touch wherever they may be and when you tell someone that you’re from Quesnel, they often say, “oh, that’s that pretty little town with the flowers” which adds so much to the character of the town.”The Martindales certainly encourage anyone else considering “eventually” making a gift to the Quesnel Community Foundation to do it now and double your gift to the community!! Donations may be mailed to Quesnel Community Foundation, Box 4158, Quesnel, BC V2J 3J2 or via our website www.quesnelfoundation.ca

As of Dec. 1, people who have not had a u shot this season are asked to wear a mask when visiting provincial health-care facilities to help protect those at-risk of in uenza. Provincial health-care facilities include hospitals, long-term care homes, public health units and outpatient clinics.

Each year, there are approximately 3,500 deaths from the u and its complications in Canada. Hospitalized patients and seniors in residential care and assisted living are more vulnerable to in uenza than healthy adults. People infected with the u are highly contagious and can spread the virus for 24 hours before they even realize they are sick.

Visitors join all health authority employees, students, physicians, residents, contractors, vendors and volunteers in helping to protect those at risk by choosing to vaccinate or mask, as part of B.C.’s comprehensive in uenza prevention strategy. Visitors will be asked to comply with this policy on the honour system.

The u vaccine is free to people intending to visit a health-care facility and is available at public health clinics, physicians’ of ces, travel clinics and pharmacies.

It is also free in B.C. for children

between the ages of six months and ve years, seniors 65 years and older, pregnant women and Aboriginal people, as well as individuals with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems and their household contacts and caregivers.

As well, the nasal spray u vaccine is provided free at public-health clinics and physicians’ of ces to children

two to 17- years of age who are at risk of serious illness from in uenza or who live with someone who is at risk.

While the best way for visitors to protect those in health-care facilities is to get vaccinated, masks will be available, free of charge, for those who have not been vaccinated.

The in uenza vaccine is safe and effective at preventing illness when used in conjunction with other infection

control practices, such as hand washing and remaining home when sick.

Support the Salvation Army

Hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner. As the holiday season approaches, it’s important that we reach out and help those in need.

The Quesnel Salvation Army is a huge beacon of support to people in our community and it needs your help to help those in need this holiday season. If you would like to donate, please consider the invaluable work they do.

Giving time as a volunteer is helpful, too. The Salvation Army Christmas kettle campaign shifts consist of two hours from now through December 24 at Safeway, Save-On-Foods, Extra Foods and Walmart. Volunteers are needed from Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. as available. I am looking forward to doing kettle duty on December 5 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Safeway, during the Santa Extravaganza event at Spirit Square. The extravaganza is from 2 to 5 p.m. Santa arrives at 2:30 p.m.

Other initiatives that the Salvation Army puts on includes Breakfast with Santa, on December 19. Santa will deliver a present for each child aged 16 and under. If you want to help these children and buy presents for Santa to deliver, there will be an Angel Tree set up soon at Remax. You can anonymously choose a child to shop for.

The Salvation Army will also deliver Christmas Sunshine Bags for seniors on December 21 to Dunrovin Park Lodge and Maeford Place residents.

On December 25, the Salvation Army will host a Christmas dinner at the Warrior’s Song Café for approximately 200 people from 1 to 4 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to help put on and serve dinner.

I myself am hosting a Christmas open house at my constituency office on December 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. and collecting food for the Quesnel Salvation Army. Donations of non-perishable food items to the Quesnel Salvation Army would be gratefully received.

If each of us were to do something, even if you only have an hour to spare, imagine how much brighter Christmas could be for everyone. Every little bit of time, money and food donation helps. If you want to volunteer for the Salvation Army Kettle Campaign or Christmas Sunshine Bags for seniors, call the Salvation Army office at 250-992-8784. If you want to volunteer for Christmas dinner, call Stefan at 250-992-7079.

NEWS

Formed in 2011 by Heath Onstine and a group of local musicians, the River City Music Association, (RCMA), has grown into a healthy organization with an increasing membership.

The main objective of the association is to establish a community minded organization which is dedicated to promoting and fostering music, enhancing musicianship in Quesnel, advocating for musicians, musical education and entertainment. The RCMA strongly endorses music as an essential part of any healthy community.

The association achieves this goal in a number of ways, including their popular open mic nights. Open mic night started out humbly in the Elk’s Hall on the West Side. The well attended evenings showcased a diverse mixture of musicians, genres and skill levels. You would

never guess that a small Cariboo venue would host local Hip Hop, Country, Folk, Rock and Roll, Vocal Improvisation and Indie Rock musicians but that is exactly what you would find at these events.

In 2014, The Occidental invited the association to hold its Open Mic nights and various events at their amazing venue.

Owned and operated by the McKillican Family, The Occidental offers a professional production team, full stage, delicious food and a full bar. This was a natural partnership and the association jumped on the chance to hold events in the establishment.

Since the move, the open mic nights have further increased in popularity and each event seems to get bigger and bigger. Local and visiting musicians now have the luxury of performing for a packed house on a

professional stage. Whether you are there for the first time, are a seasoned artist, or are trying out newly penned songs of your own, everyone is welcome. This is the goal, the reason the association exists in the first place.

“I am so proud of what we have accomplished since the association began,” Kathy Canuel, RCMA president said

“After some struggles and growing pains, we have really started to hit our stride and accomplish our goals. I look forward to seeing where we go from here.”

Giving artists a platform to gain experience, improve their skills, or share their passion is not the only reason the association exists.

The organization uses funds raised to offers lessons, instruments and bursaries to local youth

to help encourage and develop their love of music. Many of the members have experience as professional musicians, either as touring bands, instructors, or songwriters. By having a community to reach out to, members are able to expand their knowledge of the music industry and gain access to support and services to help move them forward.

Whether your goal is to have a career in music or you are simply a music lover, the RCMA has something for everyone. Quesnel is a very musical and artistic community and the association is proud to offer a place for like-minded individuals to come together. For information on how to become a member, contact Kathy Canuel at 250-255-4312, or check out River City Music Association Facebook page.

Help wantedWhen it comes to helping

others, the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ comes

to mind. As Canada prepares to wel-come thousands of Syrian refugees in the coming months, there are those willing to do everything in their power to help, and it’s admirable. At the same time, there are others

demanding that we ‘look after our own’ first – and the many who do just that every day are also admi-rable.There’s no question the need in our

own backyard is great; even some of our closest neighbours are struggling. It’s a need that receives less public

attention than its international coun-terpart, although it’s often brought to the forefront a little more this time of year, as Christmas approach-es, despite its year-round presence. As calls to focus on our own con-

tinue to permeate the refugee dis-cussion, we suggest it’s a good time for all of us to ask ourselves, what exactly have we done to make things better for others?Have we donated to the food bank?

Have we checked in on that neigh-bour who hasn’t been seen in a few days? Have we offered to help serve meals at the local soup kitchen? Before we criticize the help that’s

being given to our international neighbours based on the belief that ‘charity begins at home,’ those ques-tions deserve due consideration. Some say how we respond to the

plight of Syrian refugees is a test of our values and generosity. The same can be said – and we would venture to an even greater degree – about how we look after our own commu-nity.It’s easy to pretend problems, both

locally and globally, don’t exist, if we stay inside, turn off our televisions, close our curtains and unplug from the Internet. But it’s neither right nor fair to

point to one group that needs help and say, we can’t help you because we have to help our own.Especially if we’re not.And really, even if charity does

begin at home, does it have to stop there?–BP

Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak

have joined the thousands of jet-setters in Paris to once again stage negotiations for a global climate treaty.

The embarrassing failures of these United Nations events, such as the one in Lima, Peru last year, have been forgotten.

Canadian TV only showed file images of an effigy of Stephen Harper receiving a “fossil of the day” award for his alleged failure to rein in Canada’s two per cent of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.

Now Justin Trudeau leads our biggest-ever delegation to COP21, as the Paris meeting is called.

Trudeau hasn’t even begun to develop a plan for Canada, asking provinces to come up with their own first, but he’s already hailed as a visionary.

This is similar to the newly elected Barack Obama, who modestly predicted in 2008 that history would record his win as “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

Perhaps Obama wasn’t completely full of CO2, since in this century, global

temperatures have increased by only about a fourth of what UN climate models predicted. This 20-year slowdown of the long run of post-Ice Age warming, which has dominated most of the last 10,000 years, is referred to as the “pause” or “hiatus.”

It is usually explained away with reference to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation or other long-term warming and cooling trends in oceans.

Other countries have put new emission reduction proposals on the table for COP21. Danish environmental economist Bjorn Lomborg did the math, and concluded that if every major emitting country keeps its word this time, the total of all their efforts would reduce global warming by about 0.2 degrees by 2100.

What? A statistically meaningless decrease after 85 years of energy austerity? That Lomborg, he’s just a “denier,” trying to get more publicity. Oh wait, here’s a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that finds the same thing – two tenths of a degree by 2100.

Wobbly climate models aren’t the only problem for global warming alarmists. NASA recently confirmed that contrary to UN projections, total ice mass in Antarctica is increasing. This is much more likely to slow sea level rise than an Obama or Trudeau speech.

Arctic ice, meanwhile, is rebounding rapidly after receding in recent years. And while UN climate conferences always cause a spike in sightings of people wearing polar bear suits, here’s another inconvenient truth.

B.C. polar bear researcher Susan Crockford reports that the world bear population is up to 26,500, a 50-year high. That Crockford, she’s just a denier…. Oh wait, the International Union for Conservation of Nature “Red List” says that’s about right, and the population

trend is no longer “decreasing” but is now “unknown.”

None of this is to deny that our climate is warming, or that the Industrial Revolution and carbon fuel use are part of the picture. It’s the religious zeal, misuse of data and attacks on skeptics that are troubling.

B.C. already leads the country with its small but broad-based carbon tax, about which Clark will boast at every opportunity in Paris.

We won’t see the B.C. Liberal government’s final “Climate 2.0” plan until next spring, but their advisory committee wants to start jacking up the carbon tax in 2018.

Northern and Interior B.C. folks are assured they will receive bigger rebates to reflect the fact that they pay more carbon tax to drive long distances in the cold.

And B.C.’s aggressive 2020 greenhouse gas target? The government admits we’re not going to make that, because the economy is growing.

Editor:I’m 79 years young

and live in Edmonton.  I met Arthur twice in Quesnel and on both occasions found him to be a pleasant, loving and caring gentleman.

I have been reading his postings on his website since about 2006 and have supported him in his defense of the ludicrous and unwarranted charges leveled against him.

I am a Canadian born, bred and raised in Alberta having lived and worked here and

in B.C. and never in all my life have I ever seen such dismantling of our freedoms, our traditions and way of life which began with the enactment and implementation of that dreaded human rights tribunal legislation right across our domain.

There was a time when Canada was virtually neutral in foreign affairs and we were honoured with a lot of respect.  But since these tribunals came into existence and the amendments to the Criminal Code I have seen

a steady and progressive whittling away of our inalienable right to freedom of speech and press.

I feel this is all due to the fact that Canada cast off its neutrality in favour of the Zionist Jewish state of Israel and the leaders of all parties and their MPs tell us, incorrectly, that Canadians approve of this favouritism.

The Jewish lobby in Canada is exceptionally strong and, in my humble opinion, controls the political agenda of the

ruling party regardless of who that may be and the result is that Canada is tarred with the same disrespectful brush as the USA, England and other western allies.

Anyone can access literally millions of articles, essays and books where the authors indicate the world-wide dislike of the Jews and their Zionist masters and especially their programs and policies. It’s rather oxymoronic that the Jews can spew venom against the Muslims and get away

with it, but if one dares to criticize the state of Israel then watch out because the wide-open talons of the HRCs and the attorney general swoop down and choke your very essence for criticizing them.

We don’t have a justice system in Canada any longer, but a legal system that isn’t just!  The charges against Arthur should never have been allowed to hit the courtroom but pressure from Jewish groups like B’Nai Brith forced the

gendarmes to take action. I want to thank you

for the fair comments about the trial posted in the Quesnel newspaper.  Arthur Topham needs our support and I urge your readers to help him in any way that you can.

I know it is rather early but I want to take this opportunity to wish you and all the good people of Quesnel and area and B.C. a very Happy, Healthy and Merry Christmas.

ANNIE GALLANTObserver Reporter

When Granville’s owner Ted Martindale spoke with Prince George’s Books & Co. owner Owen

Lubbers about the possibility of opening another branch of his business in Quesnel, Lubbers gave it serious consideration. Over a six month period this year, he spent many hours in Quesnel, assessing the business prospects.

To sweeten the deal, Martindale promised to establish a Grandville’s coffee shop in any future Books & Co. in Quesnel.

Lubbers was initially an employee of the 25-year-old business Books & Co. in Prince George and when the owner (and Lubber’s uncle) was looking to retire, Owen recognized the opportunity and jumped on it. Books & Co. in Prince George also has a coffee shop within the business.

In looking at potential locations, Lubbers and Martindale chose the former Spa Rivier location with its two- oor con guration. This prompted Lubbers to speak to fellow business people Alanna Siemens and Darlene Shatford who run a successful yarn shop in Prince George.

He invited them to consider second oor space, which they agreed to.

“We’re on the second oor in our Prince George Top Drawer Yarn Studio and the con guration is almost identical in Quesnel,” Siemens said.

“I think residents in Quesnel will be thrilled we’re here.”

The seed for their Prince George business was a desire to access high-end bres for personal reasons which evolved to a store-front operation.

Both long-time knitters, their shop in Prince

George is a hub for the community and also a cultural destination for other bre artists and craftspeople.

“We’re looking at starting knitting classes and possibly other types of classes in the new year,” Siemens added.

Books and Co. has been open in Quesenel for about a month.

“We’re more than just a book store,” Lubbers said.

“We’re also a hub for the community. We’ll be setting up book clubs, reading sessions and the coffee shop is a natural blend with a book store.”

He also said he’s looking to cultivate a relationship with local authors. Books & Co.

already carries one Quesnel author, Ed Zaruk and Lubbers is looking to add more.

“So far it’s been great, with great feedback,” he said. The business owners are impressed with Quesnel’s

downtown location. They agreed it has terri c walkability.Lubbers said Books & Co. will carry all genres and,

despite constantly evaluating his stock, he realizes people sometime request books he doesn’t carry.

order in anything a customer requests,” he said.

Siemens and Shatford said special orders are a major part of their business as well.

“We’ve built our business on special orders and many of the stock we carry was a result of special orders,” Shatford said.

With their second- oor location, Siemens said they are happy to offer rst- oor service for those who nd the stairs challenging.

That service has proven very popular in their Prince George shop.

However, the second oor also offers, not only a discounted book section, but a quiet, relaxing area where people can kick back with a Granville’s coffee, peruse a tantalizing book

or visit with friends – quite unusual for a retail outlet, but certainly a nice addition to the three-business operation.

Each business is a separate entity but they share the rent and utilities costs.

Top Drawer Yarn Studio is looking to draw on the creative community, including outlying areas such as Wells.

“We believe there’s a strong arts community here,” Shatford said.

Their business carries primarily boutique, hand dyed and mostly natural bres, many of which are imported from Europe.

“Cashmire wool is one of our most luxurious bres,” Siemens said.

Although both businesses have their primary locations in Prince George, they ex-pect to spend a lot of time in Quesnel as well as having hired knowledge-able, capable staff.

Located in busy downtown Quesnel, Granville’s coffee shop, Books & Co. and Top Drawer

Yarn Studio are looking forward to a long and successful relationship with the community and invites the public to drop by 371 Reid St., see what they are selling and enjoy a coffee and conversation.

It may seem to be a little after the fact, but I

would like to make an observation about the attacks in Paris. I was as shocked as anyone with the brutality and inhumanity displayed.

But there was something that caught my attention that surprised me even more than the actual attacks.

A single line in one

of the news articles stated that many of the people in the theatre listening to the metal band, Eagles of Death, didn’t realize at first that there was a terrorist attack happening. At first they thought it was part of the show.

This surprised me more than the actual attacks.

The world has come to expect that kind of activity from these

militants. But I don’t expect people to be entertained by that kind of representation.

I asked myself, if it had turned out to be an act rather than real, would everyone fete the band as being cutting edge? Would the representation be any less offensive than what actually happened?

Clearly the reality has much farther reaching results, but why would

people not be disturbed by enactments of what is so heinous?

I expect the answer lies at least in part in our values.

In a generation gone by there were values instilled that included statements like, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Turn the other cheek. Forgive and you will be forgiven. All statements made by one

man. Jesus Christ. I’m thinking that this moment would be a great time to re-visit our values as a culture. A good place to start would be with these and other life changing statements made by Jesus. By the way, we discuss these every week in gatherings at our church. See you there?

Phyllis Lorraine MorgensternOctober 19, 1950 – November 4, 2015

The family of the late Phyllis Lorraine Morgenstern wishes to announce her peaceful passing at the age of 65, with her family by her side. A memorial service was held November 12th at Claytons Funeral Directors in Quesnel, BC. Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Ervin, two daughters, Cherie-Lynn (Darren Joly) and Velvet. Ten grandchildren; Letitia (Chris), Shayna (John), Alyssa, Dan-ica, Austin, Aaron, Christian, Breanna, Kayla and Gavin. Two great-grandchildren; Laela and Peyton. Brothers; Wayne (Linda), Paul (Louise), Kelly (Gerri), Terry (Claudine), Kevin (Sherry) and Stephen (Michelle). Sister: Patricia Simpson (Wayne). Mother-in-law; Mary Morgenstern. Brothers-in –law; Phil (Barb), Lorne (Linda) and Mel (Sharon). Sisters-in-law; Joan (Mel) Frank, Patricia Reistad and Joyce Standbridge. As

well as many extended family members and friends. Phyllis is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Phyllis Standbridge, her brother Mike Standbridge, her father-in-law Alvin Morgenstern, sister-in-law Edith Werbecky and brother-in-law, Gerald Morgenstern. Phyllis’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. She loved her family and enjoyed spending as much time with them as she could. Her grandchildren and great-grand children brought her much joy and she loved family gatherings. Camping and wood-working were two of her favorite pass times, which she enjoyed with her family and friends. The family wishes to thank the following: the sta at C & C Wood Products,

Kenworth and the Petro Pass card lock for their nancial assistance during Phyllis and Ervins extended stay at St. Pauls hospital in Vancouver; family and friends for their support during the nal days at the hospital and continued support after. We would also like to thank Clayton Funeral Directors for their compas-sion and patience during this time. Her smile and warmth will be dearly missed and held in our hearts forever. Rest in Peace dear, Phyllis Lovingly re-membered, always cherished Ervin, Cherie, & Velvet

Creating an artisan’s mask

Several of the artists who drop by every Thursday to paint together and exchange skills and interests, chose to embark on a journey of discovery in the

world of mask making. Under the guidance of vet-eran paper-maker and artist, Sybil Muschik led the group step by step through the process. First they created a plaster of Paris template by layering the

material on their face (first smeared with vaseline to make removal easier) top left. Then each waited for

the plaster to dry, sitting facing the sun, top right. The second session saw the women learning the art of papermaking, centre right and then applying the soggy paper to their bone-dry template (again vase-line was applied to the template), bottom right. The final stage, which several of the artists have yet to

complete was removing the mask from the template. The mask is now ready for painting. The template can

be used over and over again as long as it’s handled properly. Features of the artist were discernible in

the finished mask but it was also an opportunity to add relief and repair any thin sections with more

handmade paper.Annie Gallant photos

SportSBear Communication gets back in the win column in FHL action Bear was obvi-

ously paying attention to

the recent rumours that they were a flash in the pan, all washed up, unreliable squad, as they erupted in epic proportions in a 10-3 win over the now last placed BCS side. The offensive assault saw Jason “Firecracker” Fore-man score a fistful of goals as he actually passed the puck for a pair of assists as Clint “For a few dollars more” Winchester six gunned his way to a hat trick and a pair of helpers. Getting in on the parade was Budd “Light” Carter and Bruce “The Moose” Broughton who both tallied their first of the season as Kris “Haymitch” Hayman delivered a quintuple in the pike position of assists. Despite being a combined -17 for the morning, three BCS D men notched their inaugural goals of the season as Mark “Still 50” Courtney, “BIG” Bob Merta and Derek “Kamikaze” Kitamura all rippled the mesh with how-itzers from the point. The other contest also saw a flurry of goals as Serenity made like the Canucks and coughed up the lead but actually won the game in extra time 8-7 over Fraser River.

The game was only one zip for the Build-ers at Zamboni time before pond hockey rules were enacted and the netminders were left to their own defences. Shoot-ing star for Serenity was Gord “Sockeye” Salmons who used his patented bar down wrister to score a pair as Jim “Soupy”

Sales and Rob “The Rocket” Couturier both notched a goal and assisted on each other’s tally. De-spite spending some time in the sinbin, Kevin “Nightrider” Hesslegrave had more moves than Jagr for a pair of goals and two assists Ian “Heartbreaker” Han-nah scored once and added an assist. The short benched Chevy Crew saw five of their seven players find the twine as “Magic” Matt Powell used his imposing frame to score a pair as he drew assists on Jason “JJ” Johnson`s single-ton and Tyler Cole-man “Lanterns” duo of lamp lighters. Scor-ing unassisted goals, thanks to their blaz-ing speed, were Derek “Gonzales” Burdekin and Glen “Break-neck” Boudreau as Fraser River fought back from numerous two goal deficits to send the game to a shoot-out. The only shooter to beat a ten-der was Serenity`s Jeff “Needles” Needham as Aaron “The Ham-mer” Hames shut the door on all three of Fraser Rivers some-times feeble attempts. After suffering their eighth straight win-less contest, the FHL panel has concluded that the defending champs either peaked too early (Week three) or BCS is going to play possum for the rest of the season in an attempt to lull their opponents into complacency for the playoffs. What-ever the case, the 8-7 Fraser River victory has removed any need to restrict the size of FHL goaltender padding. Maybe play-

ing with beach balls might be a better idea as the Chevy Crew received huge games from the talented trio of Powell who scored one and collected three assists with Waylon “and Willy” L`Heureux Lucken-baching a pair and as-sisting on four which included George “Popeye” Paul’s fifth and sixth of the sea-son. Doing his best to keep Blue Collar close at the end was Justin “Rah-Rah” Rasmus-sen who scored four goals (two of the unassisted spectacular variety) and added two assists as he has been involved in over 50 per cent of his team’s offense this year. Pitching in with arguably his best game of his relatively short career, was Nathan “The Last” Strand who scored once and dished out three assists, as Les “Knuckles” Nylen had one and one. Meanwhile back at the OK corral, an-other battle royal was being contested as Se-renity scored the 14th goal of the game with 20 seconds remain-ing to knot up Bear seven all to force the game to a shoot-out. Serenity actually led most of the contest as Hannah had how-itzered in two and drew a couple of as-sists on Rob “Sparky” Couturier`s pair which opened up and rounded out the regu-lation time scoring.

Doug “Cage Fighter” Mack, Salmons and Hesslegrave all had multi point games for the Serenity side that has now gone to three straight shoot-outs. Storming back several times in the contest was Bear who re-ceived a huge game from Richard “The man with the golden gloves” Lindstrom who swatted one in and assisted on a pair as Colin “Please Mis-ter” Keis played B-17 three times including a Bar down beauty that saw several jaws drop. League scoring leader, Foreman threw in a new wrinkle to his game as he only scored once while adding four glori-

ous assists as Kris “Haymaker” Hayman continued his lucky streak versus Seren-ity pounding in a pair as he has scored all four of his goals

against the Builders this season. With both net-minders suffering from a red-light burn in regulation, they had the last laugh in the shoot-out, as Keis

was the only Bear boy to beat Hames as “Nightrider” scored the lone goal against “Magic” Mike Burke.

November 29 - December 5, 2015ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Aries, you can be quite generous when you choose to be, but sometimes you can overlook the needs of others. Pay as much attention to others’ needs as possible this week.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Little things influence how others look at you, Taurus, so make sure you get all of your ducks in a row -- especially at work. Focus on some finer details.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21You may not be in a practical mood this week, Gemini. Fortunately for you, there isn’t much of importance that needs to be done, so you are free to let loose a little bit.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22This isn’t a week to take a walk down Memory Lane, Cancer. Focus on the future rather than get-ting lost in nostalgia. However, let your past guide your actions a bit.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, your calendar is filling up quickly, but you cannot add any days to the calendar. Divide your responsibilities so you can better handle every-thing on your slate.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Ambivalence will get you nowhere fast, Virgo. It can be difficult to make decisions, but that’s something you have to do this week. Once you do, you can forge ahead.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, you are capable of making intelligent, objec-tive decisions. Expect to find yourself with a grow-ing list of new friends who want your advice.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Now is not the time to begin a new project, Scor-pio. Rather, keep a low profile and finish up any tasks that you did not get to finish last week.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, it’s difficult to get a good read on any associates or friends, which could impact your plans moving forward. You may need to make a few assumptions and back track later.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Capricorn, right now all you can think about is your career and your financial future. That’s okay be-cause you’ve been meaning to give more thought to your finances and how to proceed.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, you may feel yourself pulled in two dif-ferent directions this week. There’s a part of you that is focused on home, and another that knows work beckons. Find a balance.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20It may seem like getting others to open up is a struggle this week. Find a way to communicate as best you can, Pisces.

The holiday season is supposed to be relaxing and fun but if you’re throwing a holiday party, you probably feel anything but relaxed.

However, party planning experts say it is possible to enjoy a holiday get together even when you’re hosting. The key is to start your preparations well in advance.

“The first step to stress free entertaining is to sit down and make a detailed plan,” TV celebrity, Anna Wallner said.

“In addition to the guest list, you should create a list of menu and alcohol requirements and key dates you need to complete important tasks.

“I plan for at least three drinks per person, so in the fall I make batches of red and white wine to ensure I always have plenty of libations on hand for the holiday season.”

This advance preparation not only helps to reduce costs, but projects like making customized wine labels can add a personal touch to any party.

Try checking off one item from your list every day from decorating to grocery shopping to minimize last minute party stress.

As the menu is often the cause of the most stress for busy hosts, Wallner recommends sticking to crowd pleasing,

tried and true recipes, particularly ones that can be made in advance. Dishes like poached salmon, salads and charcuterie are perfect for parties as they can be served at room temperature so you don’t need to worry about heating dishes when your guests have arrived. Regularly stock up on olives, cashews, salami, prosciutto, cheese and cheese straws, as they are quick to assemble into a beautiful platter that’s perfect for drop in guests. Wallner says she never makes dessert as she’s convinced it’s cheaper and easier to buy than make from scratch and removes one more item from the ‘to do’ list.

To give yourself even more time to enjoy the party with your guests, Wallner suggests taking a minimalist approach to décor and music. Faux candles set a nice mood and don’t need to be re-lit throughout the night. To keep the food flowing and you out of the kitchen, hire a college student or a friend’s teenager to pass around dishes, top up drinks and clear dirty dishes.

Just before the party begins, pour yourself a glass of wine, savour the moment and relax. When your guests arrive, don’t sweat the small stuff and remember parties are supposed to be fun.

Take the strain out of holiday entertaining

Chef Todd Bright from Mallee Rock Wines brings his Australian roots to Ca-nadian soil and shares his family recipe for Australian-inspired meat pies, a mouth-watering mini version of the classic. The perfect mate? Mallee Rock Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon. Upon first sip, you’ll discover ripe blackberry and plum notes, with hints of mocha and toasty oak.

Beef and Bacon Meat Pies

Makes 16 piesIngredients

• 16 ready-to-bake unsweetened tart shells• 1 pack puff pastry• 2 tsp olive oil• 1/2 red onion, diced• 3 cloves garlic, minced• 1/2 tsp cumin pow-der

• 1/2 tsp garlic powder• 1/2 tsp onion pow-der• 2 tsp black pepper• 1 kg regular ground beef• 10 strips maple bacon, cut into small chunks• 1/2 cup frozen peas• 2 tbsp gravy powder• 1 cup chicken stock• 1 egg

Method1. Heat oil in a large

pan. Once hot, add onion, garlic and spices, and cook until onions are translucent. Add beef and bacon and cook until brown, making sure that any large clumps have been broken down. Add peas, gravy powder and chicken stock and let simmer for about seven minutes until a thick sauce has been made. Let cool.

2. While waiting for

the filling to cool, roll out the puff pastry and cut into rounds a little bit bigger than the tart shells (the pastry will shrink as it cooks).

3. Preheat an oven to 400F. Place the tart shells on a non-stick cookie sheet and fill with the meat mixture Place your pre-cut puff pastry round on top and brush it with a little egg wash. Place in the oven and cook for about 20 min-utes, until the top has puffed up and turned golden brown.

Take out of the oven and let sit for 5 minutes before serving. (This will ensure the gravy isn’t too hot.)

Serve with your favourite salad and a glass of Mallee Rock Shiraz Cabernet Sau-vignon.
