The Stanley Cemetery Low Mobility Trail is the newest wheelchair accessible wilderness trail in the Cariboo.

The trail was developed in partnership between the Cariboo Regional District (CRD); the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development through the BC Community Recreation Program and the Towns for Tomorrow Program; Northern Development Initiative Trust; the Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition; and the Friends of Barkerville Society

“Creating accessible trails like the Stanley Cemetery Low Mobility Trail throughout our region will allow more people to enjoy the beautiful Cariboo outdoors,” Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said.

“This project reflects our heritage here in the Cariboo and will be a lasting legacy for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly with Canada’s 150th birthday celebration in 2017. By working together, we can continue to provide more recreational opportunities for our residents.”

The Stanley Cemetery Low Mobility Trail provides access to the historic graveyard which is the final resting spot for a number of pioneers and Chinese immigrants from the gold rush era, as well as some later residents. The remains of some of the Chinese gold miners who were buried at the site have since been repatriated to their birthplace.

“I am extremely pleased that we have completed the Stanley Cemetery Low Mobility Trail,” Electoral Area C Director John Massier said.

“This is the next step in making the Cariboo Chilcotin

one of the most attractive wheelchair accessible tourism destinations in the world. Projects such as the Stanley Cemetery Low Mobility Trail shows what can be accomplished through regional collaboration and commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and visitors of all abilities, while preserving our heritage and culture.”

The trail has a steep section up a hill to the cemetery and then features a gentle grade throughout the site. An accessible outhouse and informational kiosk are available at the trailhead for visitors’ convenience.

“It is very exciting to have the Stanley Cemetery Low Mobility Trail officially complete. The trail will allow visitors of various mobility levels to enjoy this unique and valuable historic site,” Director with the Friends of Barkerville Cariboo Goldfields Historical Society, Robin Grady said.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped to make this trail a reality.”

The cemetery overlooks the old town site of Stanley. This once vibrant town, located on the banks of Lightning Creek, at one time boasted a larger

population than Barkerville as a result of the quantity of gold found in the area. The Stanley Hotel is still standing today.

“Northern Development is proud to support this accessible trail development. Arena open house slatedThe Cariboo Regional

District and the City of Quesnel will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, September 29 from 6-8 p.m. in the lobby of the North Cariboo Twin Arenas.

The open house will be an opportunity for residents to view the nal construction drawings and ask questions of the project manager, the architects, elected of cials and staff about the project status.

A request for quali cations was issued in the spring for the project and ve rms have been short-listed. These rms will be invited to bid on the request for proposals (RFP)

to be the General Contractor for the project.  The RFP will be issued at the end of October and awarded in mid-December.

Ground will be broken for construction of the West Fraser Centre in the spring of 2016 with an estimated completion date of the fall of 2017.

The City of Quesnel’s Public Works Department has commenced relocation of a number of underground utilities in preparation for the start of spring construction.

Water, sewer, and storm water lines will need to be moved to accommodate the

building footprint and to service the building.

Most of the relocation work will take place on Callanan Street and in LeBourdais Park, immediately east of the curling rink.

Smaller portions of the work will take  place  on  Vaughan  Street,  the  Civic Plaza  and  the  lane  running  north/south  between  Vaughan  Street  and Callanan Street.

Further information about the North Cariboo Arena Replacement/West Fraser Centre project is available online at cariboord.ca orthe City of Quesnel at quesnel.ca .

Category 2 open res allowedAs of noon Monday

Category 2 open res are once allowed throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction due to a decreased wild re risk in the region. Category 3 open res remain prohibited.

Category 2 res are res that burn material in piles smaller than two metres high and three metres wide, or stubble or grass over an area smaller than 2,000 square metres.

Anyone who wishes to light a re should take the following precautions:

• Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the re and to prevent it from escaping.

• Do not burn in windy conditions. The weather can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new res.

 • Create a fi reguard of at least one metre around the planned re site by clearing

away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material.

A map of the area is available at: http://bit.ly/1Kr4UwJ

Anyone who lights, fuels or makes use of a Category 2 open re must comply with the Environmental Management Act and Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation. The act requires individuals to check local venting conditions prior to ignition. Local venting conditions can be found by visiting www.bcairquality.ca or calling 1 888 281-2992. A burn registration number is not required for a Category 2 open re.

The rescinding of the Category 2 open re prohibition in the

Cariboo Fire Centre applies to all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest re prevention bylaws and are serviced by re departments. Please check with civic authorities for any other restrictions before lighting any re.

The Cariboo Fire Centre stretches from Loon Lake near Clinton in the south to the Cottonwood River near Quesnel in the north and from Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in the west to Wells Gray Provincial Park in the east.

Anyone found in contravention of an open burning

prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, ned up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wild re, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all re ghting and associated costs.

To report a wild re, abandoned camp re or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.

TOM FLETCHERBlack Press

Education ministry staff have searched in vain since this summer to locate a backup hard drive containing B.C. and Yukon student information from 1986 to 2009. The computer memory disk contains 3.4 million public school education records, including names, postal codes, grades and personal education numbers.

Citizens’ Services Minister Amrik Virk said Tuesday there is no evidence the information has been taken or misused. After a lengthy physical search of a secure warehouse in Victoria turned up nothing, ministry electronic records continue to be searched to see if the hard drive was moved or destroyed.

Virk said there were two unencrypted backup hard drives created in 2011, contrary to ministry information and privacy rules. Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham has been noti ed and is investigating.

“There’s no doubt that a mistake was made, rst in how the hard drive was created, and secondly, how it was stored,” Virk said. “This should not have happened.”

The drive also more than 9,000

personal education numbers for children in government care, connected to information such as health and behaviour issues. This sensitive personal information could be connected to names by comparing the personal education numbers to names through the larger data le.

NDP education critic Rob Fleming said Virk is coming forward after several weeks because he doesn’t believe the missing hard drive will be found.

“For government to admit this has happened is not good enough,” Fleming said. “They have to tell us how and why it happened, and the minister speci cally has to say why he failed to do his job.”

The government has set up a phone contact centre through Service BC for speci c inquiries about the data breach. The centre is open 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and callers should be prepared to say when they attended public or post-secondary schools in B.C.

In Victoria, call 250-387-6121. In Metro Vancouver, 604-660-2421. Elsewhere in B.C. call 1-800-663-7867.

Number gameEvery politician and would-be MP or

MLA knows, or at least they should, that polling numbers don’t translate into seats.Polling figures from Nanos Research

released this week show the governing Conservatives, Opposition NDP and the Liberals in a virtual dead heat among decided voters, with support ranging between 29 and 31 per cent. But even if that was the last poll conducted before election day, it wouldn’t necessarily mean Parliament would split exactly down those lines. There is always a huge glut of people

who are undecided up until the late stages of a campaign – some estimates put it as high as 25 per cent. In a close election race, the number of people who make up their mind just before heading to the polling station is likely far more than politicians or parties would care to see.It would be interesting to know how

many people use polling figures to help them cast their vote. Our guess would be very few.Public media companies have for years

commissioned research firms to give them the latest figures, which often get trotted out on front pages and websites as the top story for that day. We believe in the credibility and veracity of such polls, given their size and the commitment to accuracy made by the major media – CTV and The Globe and Mail hired Nanos for the above poll.Unfortunately, releasing polling

data has become a public relations ploy, especially with all the parties commissioning their own polls at various times. One firm hired by the NDP came back with numbers last week that said Liberal leader Justin Trudeau was trailing an opponent by 11 points in his own riding. A poll conducted for a national media company with a far larger sample size and different methodology found Trudeau to actually be leading by five points.Political parties hire pollsters to come

up with numbers they feel will help them. Without a doubt, if the numbers don’t flatter them, they don’t publicize them. While stats heads might find the pre-election numbers interesting, the only ones that count are on election day.So what do we take from this? Voters

can do their homework on local candidates and leave the polls for the parties to play around with.

–BP

I received a call last week from the owner of a media company that’s

been publishing my column for almost four years. He claimed my recent article “Pit bull propaganda is deadly” had caused such a negative backlash that he and his wife felt it necessary to cancel my column.

“We love your work,” he said.

“And we don’t disagree with you on this issue, but these people are very hostile and they won’t let up. They’re relentless.”

Yes, I know they are. That’s what my article titled Won’t back down from two weeks ago was about.

His news site didn’t run that column though. Not the next one either, despite it having nothing to do with pit bulls.

The aggressive vocal minority accomplished what they set out to do: I was removed from their list of columnists, and my voice with their readers was silenced.

Celebrities and high-profile people have felt their wrath as well.

In 2012 it was reported in the Vancouver Sun that Miss Universe Canada believed the provincial government should either adopt a pit bull ban or at least require them to be

leashed and muzzled at all times.

After the story came out the ferocious reaction against her was wide spread, sparking an online petition from California asking for 10,000 signatures to strip Sahar Biniaz of her title. It ended up garnering 6718 supporters and oodles of vicious comments accusing her of being a hateful, lying, moronic, breedist bimbo.

The fact she’d been attacked by her own well-raised, much-loved family pit bull at the age of 14 only proved to them that she was a whiny loser who obviously did something to provoke the dog.

American television personality Kelly Ripa experienced similar fall out later that year in October after she made a rather innocuous inquiry on her talk show while interviewing actor Christopher Walken about the breed of dog his

character had in the movie he was promoting: “I mean, if it’s a gangster, it would have to be a dangerous pit bull kind of dog, right?”

Word quickly spread over social media about her ignorant stereotyping of the poor misunderstood breed.

The multi-million dollar funded pit bull advocacy camp is very efficient. As soon as an article or interview perceived to be maligning the reputation of the pit bull has been posted to the internet, the troops are gathered to launch their assault.

Nancy Grace, Judge Judy, Dr. Laura and many radio hosts, journalists and TV personalities have experienced it first hand.

This menacing group may be able to intimidate some into silence, and they may be able to trick some into believing pit bulls are just like any other dog, but they can’t seem to stop the ongoing daily attacks reported in the news.

Censoring this message isn’t just disrespectful to the hundreds of thousands of human and animal victims, it’s highly irresponsible to the public at large.

We deserve to know these dogs were bred to fight to the death and don’t require bad owners or training for their genetics to kick in. We

deserve to know that an enforced BSL (breed specific legislation) works for the betterment of all, and that’s why public safety advocates as well as the largest animal rights organization in the world fully support it.

For several years PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has stated the only way to stop the killing of millions of unwanted pit bulls is to stop creating new ones.

So why does the breeding continue? Why does the propaganda persist?

Ontario has banned pit bulls for 10 years now, implementing stricter regulations such as having to wear a muzzle for grandfathered pit bulls. In 2004, the last full year before the ban, there were 984 licensed pit bulls in Toronto and 168 reported bites.

Last year there were 501 licensed pit bulls and only 13 bites. The number of reported bites dropped significantly from 168 to 13. Enforced BSL works and our entire nation should be following Ontario’s lead.

The lazy days of summer and volunteeringWell, the

lazy days of summer

are over. I say “summer” because, as a recently retired teacher, people often remind me that the term “summer” is now rendered meaningless, that every day is technically “summer”.

That, I’ve found, is only partly correct. Yes, Sept. 8, came and went. The school year began without me. So, what was the traditional end of summer for me, no longer exists.

Why, then did I wake up at exactly 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning? Typically, during a two-month summer holiday, I would have frittered away July, come to a realization in August that summer was half-over, and started a frenzy of painting, gardening and home improvement projects. This year, the neighbours probably got tired of seeing me outside with the dog at 9:30, still dressed in my bathrobe. There was no sense of urgency, so the summer projects I had in mind remained largely untouched. I missed most of the Farmers’ Markets because by the time I realized it was Saturday, all the good stuff was already gone.

Now, it wasn’t a totally aimless summer. In years past, Summer Olympics has taken the summer off. But since we started our golf program, we have played golf through the summer. Since I was the only coach who didn’t take a summer holiday, I played a lot of golf.

The athletes have improved. As for me, at least I can say that my 9-hole scores are now consistently in the 50’s. The golf practices also helped me to keep some sense of time. I can happily say that none of the athletes were abandoned at the side of the road, waiting in vain for a ride that wasn’t coming. Being the guy in charge of the schedule meant I also had to be ready to fill for other coaches who were away. Good weather + enthusiastic athletes + a great golf course = a pretty good volunteer experience…

This summer, I was also involved in several volunteer fund-raisers. Up until two years ago, Special Olympics didn’t do summer fund-raising. Things have changed. Led by the ageless Marg Melnychuk and Ellen Martz, these projects involved over 600 man-hours of volunteer work.

You saw us at Billy Barker Days.Yes, that was me with my head in the trash can, tracking down a stray pop can. It wasn’t just the nickel I was after.

When you’re focused on raising money from the recycling efforts of the public, those people who are too lazy to put the pop can into the proper bin get to be infuriating.

The recycling bins filled with garbage weren’t pleasant either. It’s too bad we couldn’t have recycled those hundreds of plastic drink containers that the lemonade guy went through. With most beverage containers

only worth 5c, it’s amazing anyone bothers anymore, but it’s great that they do. The work involved in collecting, sorting, counting, bagging and delivering a bag full of plastic pop bottles at $7.50 involves a fair amount of perseverance, dedication, and yes, insanity. And, yes, that was me driving the borrowed pickup over the bridge when the bag flew out of the back, temporarily blocking traffic. Sorry about that.

Two weeks later, I was at the airport. We’d been invited to sell 50/50 tickets, collect the recycling and empty the trash. This was a great opportunity for us to raise money, but required a huge co-ordinated effort to find enough volunteers and sell the tickets within a specific time frame.

At one point, we were overwhelmed. I stood in the hayfield with no tickets left to sell. I sent my daughter off to get more, and she arrived a few minutes later with ten strips. What?

That wouldn’t do. I sent her back for more, and waited, finally going myself to see what the problem was. There under the tent, were several volunteers madly counting and ripping strips of tickets, only to have them snatched out of their hands. We learned for the next day to be better prepared. Yes, that was me you saw out there in my kilt, having to do double duty as a piper and a ticket seller.

Now, 600 man-hours might seem like a lot, but I’m

sure that was just a typical week for Betsy van Halderen in preparation for SkyFest. Our volunteer work piggy-backed on the efforts of others, who organized the two biggest volunteer events to take place this year. I am always amazed at the work done by volunteers, when it’s almost solely for the entertainment of others. Sure, Betsy might have been able to snatch a glance or two at the planes flying overhead, but every time I saw her over that weekend, she was a rush to get somewhere.

The 200+ volunteers that she managed to find, and keep organized, for the months, weeks and days leading up to Skyfest really are a selfless group because I doubt that all of you get more out of it than what you put in.

There were other groups toiling away this summer. I got to watch the Billy Barker volunteers for a weekend, doing many thankless tasks that needed to get done in order for the event to be a success. I’ve been in Quesnel long enough to notice the event’s relative decline in relevance over the years.

I don’t blame the volunteers for that because there is only so much they can do. I remember the baby crawl (one of our kids managed to win a gold pan), the bed races, the pet parade, the Mr. Quesnel contest, the marching band performances in the park, and Frank Garden singing “Danny Boy”. I remember that if you

didn’t make haste to LeBourdais Park after the parade you couldn’t find a spot within a hundred metres of the stage. Why are there so many fewer events than there once was? No volunteers to organize them? A lack of corporate sponsors? Too many other events going on in the summer? Probably all of the above, and it saddens me.

It would be great to see BBDays return once again to being the focal point of the community, an event so consuming that people used to leave town rather than deal with the crowds.

Now when I retired,

I was advised to take the first year easy, and not rush off to madly volunteer for every event that came along. I think I did that. Special Olympics has come to take up more of my time, mainly because I have more of my time to give to it than when I was working.

I also continued with several on-going volunteer projects and spent an hour a week as a volunteer math tutor. Over the summer I was invited to participate in the “Hike for Hospice”. A noble cause, but I just couldn’t muster up any enthusiasm for it.

Likewise with the Lions Club projects to

build a new seniors’ home, in which I’ll no doubt be living at some point. Maybe it was the summer heat, but some days I wasn’t even dressed before noon. As I write this, I am on board a plane, bound for Vancouver, and later today Reykjavik, Iceland. Maybe when I return from a much-needed whirlwind vacation, I’ll re-focus my energies on some of the many worthwhile causes in this community. But then again, I am retired, and may just decide in spend the day doing nothing.

Rick Prosk is a long-time Gold Pan citizen and an avid volunteer supporter.

SkyFest was just one of many volunteer opportunities this summer.Autumn MacDonald photo

Customer Appreciation at Quesnel’s Farmers’ Market

Quesnel Farmers’ Market customers were treated to lunch last Saturday in ap-preciation of their loyal support through the season. Local produce was supplied by the market vendors and lunch consisted of corn, two types of salads and des-sert all served by one of the local vendors, Dawn Moorhead. Although the weather wasn’t cooperative, customers still enjoyed the spread as well as regular shopping at the many vendors on site at the Helen Dixon Centre grounds. Including tomor-row, there are three outdoor markets left, ending Oct. 10. Now is the time to stock up on winter-keeping vegetables, the last of the summer crops and valued added products such as canning, baking and various arts and crafts. Drop by the market between 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. for the freshest, local offerings.

Nolan Perison and Ezra Nes-tel were two of the delegation who recently returned from a twinning trip to Shiraoi, Japan. The teenagers were billeted in the same Teraya household. In the household was a teenaged boy named Rin who was about the same age as Nolan and Ezra.

Nolan reported the family did fairly well with English although they had a translator on their phone.

“Rin played guitar and piano,” Nolan said.

“I will always remember going around Shiraoi and Sapporo and just having fun in those two places. We also went shopping and ate at restaurants like sushi bars and ramen restaurants.”

As for the food, Nolan tried gyoza for the time, found out he doesn’t really like Japanese eggs because they sort of tast-ed different and his favourite food in Japan was ramen.

His most memorable experi-ence was their trip to Disney-land in Tokyo.

“It was actually my rst time going to anywhere Disney, so it was really fun,” he said.

What surprised Nolan the

most was how polite and friendly the Japanese people were.

Both Nolan and Ezra found it amusing when they were in Shiraoi middle school, how the students kept staring at them every 20 seconds or so.

“People kept asking us ques-tions and it was kind of fun .”

For Ezra, he remembers different experiences but with just as much fun.

“My home stay family, the Teraya family, was a very nice family who cooked great food and took us to many interest-ing places around Shiraoi,” he said.

“Some of the experiences I will remember about my fam-ily is playing games with them and hearing funny jokes.”

He described one particular trip to a pool with tons of wa-ter slides; a giant mall with an arcade and old-fashion Ramen restaurant and a few super-stores with almost everything you could think of in it.

Ezra embraced the Japanese food and said he already had a taste for it from Japanese restaurants in Quesnel.

“My favourite food of all time which I had in Japan

would have to be their Ra-men, they serve it in a giant bowl with tons of noodles and broth along with half of a hardboiled egg,” he said.

Of all his excursions in Ja-pan, Ezra said the trip to Sap-poro and the giant Buddhist temple with tons of cherry trees, but sadly the trees had not started to bloom.

“I got to see many different buildings and even got to see a family get married at the temple,” he said.

“One thing that surprised me a lot about Japan was how Tokyo has very little ancient architecture, but in some of the smaller cities there were tons of old temples and other buildings.”

One amusing thing Ezra remembers was how they somehow managed to take a long bullet train ride to a temple far from Tokyo, spent so long at the temple grounds, they began to worry they would miss their train back to Tokyo, but when they got to the station, the train was delayed.

“We could have spent a lot more time at the temple,” he said.

Take Back the NightMore than 200 people gathered Friday, Sept. 18 for the annual Take Back the Night vigil and march. “We walk to honour the missing and murdered women and recognize those women who are still facing violence and sexual assaults in their lives,” Maureen Trotter said. She is a member of the Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre Collective. They gathered at the Memorial to Missing and Murdered Women where the event got underway with the singing of the Warrior Women’s Song by a group of First Nations women, above photo. This year there will be two names added to the memorial, Ayr Anderson and Sandra Boyd. The gathering then left the memorial and made its way through town, carrying banners and messages regarding loved ones lost and demands for equality for all. The overall message delivered by speakers and attendees was Every Woman’s Life Matters. “Every women should feel safe, every time of day, in every place in our community and in our country,” Trotter said.“I urge everyone to think about how they can help and take action to stop violence against women.” Contributed photo

Quesnel Film Club pres-ents Timbuktu, Oct. 1, 6:30 p.m. at the Carib Theatre. Set during the early days of the 2012 fundamentalist takeover of northern Mali, the new film from the great African director Abderrah-mane Sissako – nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Annual Academy Awards – is a powerful drama about the everyday woes and resis-tance of ordinary people in a city overrun by extremist foreign fighters.

Under Timbuktu’s new fundamentalist rulers, music, laughter and sports (even soccer) have been prohibited. Women have been forced to cover their heads on pain of death and kangaroo courts have been established that hand down horrendous punishments for even the slightest and most absurd of infractions.

Kidane, a proud, indepen-dent herder who lives on the edge of the city with his wife, daughter and adopted son, has so far been unaf-

fected by the city’s harsh new regime. But when, dur-ing a row over the slaughter of his prize down, he acci-dentally kills a fisherman, he witnesses and experiences firsthand the nightmarish perversion of “justice” prac-ticed by the city’s ruthless occupiers.

Inspired by real people and events, Timbuktu ac-complishes what only the greatest of art can: from the atrocities of war and oppression, it distills some-thing luminous, lyrical and

poetic. Featuring stunning cinematography, consum-mate editing and outstand-ing performances from its ensemble cast, Timbuktu movingly attests to the hu-man will to resist the terrors and injustices of absolutism.

Tickets for Timbuktu are $9 (regular) and $7 (seniors) with film club membership included in admission. For information call 250-747-7422 or 250-747-3979, join their Facebook page at Quesnel Film Club or visit www.quesnelfilmclub.ca.

FROM THE FOREST TO OUR HOMES WE ARE PROUD TO BE PART OF YOUR INDUSTRY

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU, WEST FRASER MILLS

60th Anniversary!

Quesnel River Pulpa division of West Fraser Mills Ltd.

Quesnel Plywooda division of West Fraser Mills Ltd.

Did you know...West Fraser mills is the primary employer in

many rural communities in B.C. and Alberta and it means they are an integrated part of the economic and social life of the communities where we are located.

To West Fraser, responsible business means supporting sustainable, efficient mills, offering skilled, family-supporting jobs and working with local contractors, partners and stakeholders to sustain healthy, thriving rural communities supported by diverse economies.

West FraserQuick Facts

• 8 communities are home to our 12 mills in B.C.

• 3,000 direct employees•100’s of local businesses and service

contractors we work with across the province•10 mills where we produce green energy•32 million seedlings planted in 2014

Celebrating60 years

In 1955, West Fraser’s history began in Quesnel when the Ketcham brothers – Sam, Pete and Bill – bought Two Mile

Planer after searching for many months for the right investment in the B.C. interior. They paid $60,000 and were profitable almost immediately, financing bush mills throughout the Quesnel region.

West Fraser’s core principle of controlling costs was born in these difficult first years and serves as a defence against wildly volatile lumber markets.

West Fraser currently has five facilities in Quesnel that employ a total of 1,341 exceptional people. Our West Fraser

Sawmill is the largest mill (by productivity) in North America with an annual capacity of 612 million board feet. Quesnel Plywood’s product is consumed primarily in Canada, with 98 per cent of our production being sold domestically.

Many of our facilities in Quesnel use state of the art technology.

At Cariboo Pulp and Paper, we installed a 27 megawatt-cogeneration turbo generator in 2012, which uses wood waste to generate power and steam for the mill’s operation.

Not only does it produce power for the site, it supplies enough green biomass-generated electricity to B.C.’s provincial grid to annually power more than 14,000 homes.

Quesnel River Pulp’s heat exchangers capture the waste heat from the wastewater more efficiently and as a result, reduce the demand for natural gas in the pulp drying process. Converting to more energy efficient heat exchangers saves approximately the same amount of natural gas consumed each year by 650 residential homes.

The medium density fibreboard (MDF) products manufactured at Westpine are from 100 per event recycled wood fiber from our other operations.

West Fraser’s MDF is made from spruce and pine sawdust, refined into a dry pulp-like material, combined with resin and manufactured into different thicknesses and densities to suit every use.

Community commitmentWest Fraser participated in this year’s 4-H auction and was successful in bidding on one beef and two pork auctions. The challenge then was to figure out what to do with 1,200 pounds of meat. West Fraser looked at distributing it to the members of our community who could really benefit from it. West Fraser reached out to Season’s House, The Quesnel Community Living Association, The Amata Transition House Society and The Salvation Army – all local organizations that are well positioned to help out those most in need. Each organization received 300 pounds of beef and pork – which took a few hands to move.

Utilizationof harvestAt West Fraser, excellence in

performance also means the full utilizations of the resource we harvest.

We consciously manage our energy use to reduce our consumption and look for new sustainable solutions to meet the needs of today and the future.

Logs arriving at our mills are almost fully-utilized in our manufacturing process, including the residual bark, sawdust and shavings. Residuals are also important

raw materials for West Fraser’s bioenergy production in B.C., and for research and development of innovative bioproducts.

60th Anniversary!Quesnel River Pulpa division of West Fraser Mills Ltd.

Quesnel Plywooda division of West Fraser Mills Ltd.

Congratulations on 60 years.

West Fraser’s disciplined operating focus in their facilities and cost-conscious manufacturing approach are crucial to the continuing success of West Fraser.

They have a consistent and reliable business model that is based in efficiency and unwavering attention to cost management. They consistently reinvest in our operations to ensure our committed and dedicated staff have the right resources to compete and win in a challenging industry.

Over the last 10 years, West Fraser has grown outside of the Company’s original base in British Columbia, increasing our manufacturing capabilities in

Alberta and the southern United States. Today we are the largest lumber manufacturer in Alberta and one of the largest in the U.S. South. By pursuing this strategy, we are creating new platforms for growth in many of the areas where we operate and in regions with stable or growing timber supply.

At West Fraser, our employees continue to be our key competitive advantage. They contribute to a strong, resourceful, cost-conscious culture that continues to drive our success.

Through their ongoing support and commitment, we continue to build a strong and profitable company.

Committed to ongoing support

Get ready Quesnel, curling is about to begin starting Oct. 13. Before that the club will offer a Curl Canada Clinic that will run Oct. 6 and 8. It will provide an introduction of what curling is.

“A bit of an open house to anyone who would like to refresh their skills or new to curling,” manager and ice techni-cian Dave Plant said.

Plant believes that curling is a great sport to get involved with because of the people and atmosphere it brings.

“It doesn’t matter what curling club you ever go into across Canada. You’re always going to be welcomed even in the United States,” Plant said.

“The people you meet in curling, their

very warm and wel-coming.”

He also says that you have a feeling of being included.

“You never feel like an outsider,” Plant said.

“There’s no way you walk in and not be treated with open arms.”

He also says the club is accommodating and will make you feel part of something.

“We will make you feel very welcomed and will do whatever we can to get you on a team to make you feel part of the community and the

centre,” Plant said. The club provides a

variety of leagues for everyone.

“The reality is we have a league for just about anybody that wants to play,” Plant said.

Some of their leagues include open, men’s, women’s, seniors, juniors, and a new sponsor league. People who would like to join the sponsor league will need to get a corpo-

rate sponsor to participate. Curlers who would like to practice their game are allowed, as long as there is open ice.

“There’s usually practice ice and we try to accommodate any of our members,” Plant said.

“If you’re a member of the club, there’s no charge for that.”

During the year the club hosts five events: First, is Icebreaker on Nov. 7–8. Second, is the Grey Cup Cash Spiel held during the weekend of the Grey Cup, Nov. 27–29. Third, is the Ladies Wheel’n Spiel held the last weekend of January. Fourth, is the mixed Valentines Day open, held during the weekend of Valentines Day and the St.Patrick’s Day open, held March. 11–13. If you would like to join the club you’re asked to bring clean runners to the rink. More information can be found at http://www.quesnelcurlingclub.com

September 27 - Oct 3, 2015ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20You are extra motivated to explore new opportuni-ties this week, Aries. Bring along a trusted advisor who can steer you in the right direction if you have questions.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21It is very important to find balance, Taurus. Many activities are coming up, and you have to figure out a way to juggle them all. This will take some creativity.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21Gemini, avoid overindulging this week. Even though it may seem like you can never get enough, over time something special may lose its spark. Practice moderation, instead.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, everything will work out the way it should if you keep a smile on your face this week and continue with the status quo. Soon you can shake things up.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, you may be compelled to get more involved in your community or a volunteer project this week. A desire to give something back propels your actions.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22You have a soft spot for underdogs this week, Virgo. Anyone who seems to be struggling will have your attention, and you will offer to lend a hand.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, this week presents opportunities to help people or even animals in need. If ever there was a time to take up a cause, now is it. You have plenty of extra time to lend a hand.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, you may find yourself waking up extra early just to accomplish everything you need to get done. Try not to burn the candle at both ends for too long.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, you will enjoy downtime much more after you complete an important task and feel a sense of accomplishment. Rest may still be a few days away, so be patient.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20Capricorn, things may be a little confusing of late, but you will find a clear path to get things done. Ask a friend or colleague to lend a helping hand if things get too hectic.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18Relationships are very important this week, Aquarius. Nurture both the personal and profes-sional relationships that you want to grow, and you will be happy you did.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, the earlier half of the week may be hectic, but things will return to an even keel as the days press on.

RYAN GRAHAMObserver Reporter

Charlie Clayton and Evan Peever of 2 Rivers Boxing Club competed at the Amateur Boxing Championship Sept. 19 in Edmonton.

The fight took place at the How-ard Johnson Hotel, which saw Clayton take on Rafael Santoro in the main event and Peever take on Blaze Bo-gatnov in the other match. Although, both lost their fights they were proud of what they accom-plished.

“It was an excit-ing fight and I was pretty proud of myself,” Clayton said.

“I wouldn’t have gone out there if I was scared to lose. The fact that we entertained the crowd and lived up to the main event, made it all worth it.”

He noticed the home town advantage that Santoro had in the fight, as he didn’t get to much support from the

crowd. Going into the bout he didn’t know much about Santoro, but was glad he had the height advantage.

“I was relived that he was shorter because that meant that I would get a reach ad-vantage,” Clayton said.

“I was also relieved to find out that he wasn’t a south-paw.”

He was glad Santoro wasn’t a southpaw because it would have changed his game plan.

“The fact that I was taller and that we were both right handed meant that I was probably going to stick and use my reach and keep him on the outside,” Clay-ton said.

Coach, Wally Doern was happy how Clay-ton came back.

“After the knock-down I thought for a minute that it was go-ing to be a short night for us, but Charlie got up and was right back in there,” Doern said.

“Right at the final bell, he was still com-ing on strong.” He was equally proud how Clayton handled

himself in the ring.“A lot of heart to get up and

come back like that,” Doern said.

“I was really proud more than anything.”

2 Rivers Boxing Club will be hosting Rumble 19 Nov. 7 with the fights starting at 7 p.m.

Over vocal objections from some representatives, local politicians have narrowly en-dorsed a call for an “environ-mental bill of rights” for B.C. at their annual convention.

Calling it “an idea whose time has come,” Richmond Coun. Harold Steves spon-sored the motion Wednesday at the Union of B.C. Munici-palities convention in Vancou-ver.

It calls for recognition of a right to “live in a healthy envi-ronment, including the right to clean air, clean water, clean food and vibrant ecosystems.”

Steves reminded delegates of a summer of smoke from forest fires and a drought that saw his Cache Creek farm run out of water. He noted the bill of rights has been sup-ported by 36 municipalities around B.C., after a tour of local councils by the David Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot campaign.

The idea was quickly chal-lenged.

“How is this resolution going to prevent forest fires and create clean air?” North Cowichan Coun. Al Siebring asked. “It’s not.”

Williams Lake Mayor Walt Cobb dismissed the bill of rights movement as “David Suzuki propaganda” backed

by urban people who don’t understand that mining and forestry provide the lumber, copper and other products that build their homes and communities.

Cobb said it already takes years of environmental review before resource extraction can be approved, “and if this passes, it will be another nail in the coffin of rural B.C.”

Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz urged support for the bill of rights, arguing it would “raise our consciousness.” Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps quoted from a presentation to council by an 11-year-old boy and joined other delegates in calling for the resolution to support future generations.

Split over environmental ‘rights’
