The masthead is always in the larger font and also is kept the same, its more of a logo for the magazine as its usually used throughout the magazine.Eye contact with the reader, which gives the reader a direct approach and therefore draw them in to read more. The magazine usually will include their website for first time buyer to find out more about the magazine.Issue number and date goes here. Bold main sell lines to show what the main articles going to be. (doesnt cover every story in the magazine). Usually the bolder the font the bigger the story. The magazine has a bank of fonts and they only use but use different colours and using the fonts in bold, italic, underlined or shadowed. All special content is put on the front cover as it advertises the magazine to the customer.Colour code is used on this magazine to show what is what is the magazine. This is less commonly used but lots of magazines would find it useful. In this case it also separates the cover-lines up. Extra information is given about content, given on a bar at the bottom of the page. Only this and the masthead breaks the 3 column rule. The barcode is usually placed in a way to mask it away from the picture as if it was anywhere else than the bottom corner it could become a distraction.Page layout: the convention is to have the page is divided up into three columns which breaks up the page into manageable chunks.Liam ReillyThe inclusion of free compilation CDs or a bands album are becoming more and more popular in magazines but sometimes its not, its more a convention of a more expensive magazine. 4. Issue number at the top, I didnt put the date up here for a few reasons, it took up too much room and also just followed the theme of the other magazines in the series.I included dividers because I felt it looked like everything was merged into one, this follows conventions as it makes everything stand out.Direct eye contact is used so its like the model is looking at the reader. and also placed in the centre of the page, which attracts people in.Biggest article in the magazine is in bold with it stretching across more than usual on the page so that it signifies that this is a big think, so I broke the convention but I think it works as it makes it stand out more.Sub-cover line in a different this is used because if more subclover lines were wanted, I could put them in different colours to show how they differ, this is used in magazines. The addition of this bottom bar was because many magazines do this so that they can show off content.Biggest font used on the page is for the masthead as it needs to be seen from afar.My magazine doesnt completely fit the 3 column structure as the 3rd column doesnt have as much as the 1st and 2nd except the overflow from 2nd column, masthead and the date and barcode Liam ReillyBarcode, price and date are down in the bottom corner which means they re out of the way and not obstructing the photo. In my opinion it looks better there too because if its at the top its things the reader doesnt want to see, so they should be hidden as much as possible, most popular magazines do this. 5. Liam Reilly 6. Page numbers which link the page number in the magazine to the pictures, the numbers are in the same font on all the pictures, to keep it consistent.Bar at the top that has information in, makes it into the magazine, it usually has the title and issue number and perhaps offers or other this that the magazine wants the reader to see. The cover-lines have been divided into sections so that the reader can go straight to the page they want. The whole page is quiet busy, this is good as it makes you look more.Colours are important, the magazine will use a colour like red for things to stand out.Page previews of some of the main articles. This is a convention in many magazines because it gives the reader a outline of what is coming in the issue.Notes from the editor, includes a photo and a short letter or outline what he/she has done. This gives it a personal touch, to engage the reader.Pictures play a big part, in this issue shown there is only a few, but mostly they would want pictures to show quickly whats in the magazine, so the reader doesnt have to read the numbers.Offer to get a subscription to the magazine, this may not always come up on the content page but usually it does as they want to sell as many as possible.Liam Reilly 7. The bar contains: Screen shot of cover, and contents, to show clearly where you are in the magazineOffer included, I kept it small because I didnt want it to seem obvious that I was selling the magazine too much. But It common to have it in magazines so I did include it.All numbers are a consistent font size and keep a to the blue theme, theyre also well placed on the page.Banners over the cover-lines to highlight where to go in the magazine, this is commonly used.A lot of pictures used on the content page to keep it busy and also to show immediately what page to go to for these articles.Used a different colour to highlight this part, this is a convention of a content page.Although the example magazine didnt have Facebook and twitter logos theyre widely used as it will promote the magazine. Editors section is at the bottom as like the sample magazine. All the numbers are in the same size and font this is a convention.Liam Reilly 8. Liam Reilly 9. This logo is used more than once in the article, this gives it consistency. The layout has picture on the right and writing on the left, although is can be broken on some magazines, also the artists face should go down the crease of the magazine.Direct contact with the reader, with the artist looking straight at the reader, this is usual as its engaging for the reader.Title is the boldest thing on the page. Background colour/picture is usually linked to the article, so its appropriate. The convention is to have the artist actually doing something or holding something to make it moreAlthough the masthead is in a different font the writing is in a reader able good font.appealingSimilar things are used on the page, e.g. this is at the top and bottom of the page.Liam Reilly.Bold red writing or a highlighted area is used often to make things stand out 10. I used a neutral whit background fading into a magnolia colour, this is appropriate for this type of music as its a slow, acoustic artist.Big bold header, for it to stand out, also doesnt just have the name of the artist it has a slogan/catchline.Direct eye contact with reader on the right hand site of the right hand side of the page, which matches the convention. The tour dates usually are in a box as such, it did look out of place but once the gradient was added it was so much better. The page numbers are the same as the ones featured on the content page, and theyre consistent throughout the magazine.Quote from Emily, this is also what magazines do to either fill the space or add extra detail. I had Emily hold the guitar up so it was boring this is the convention to have something for the artist to be Liam Reilly doing. 11. A main part of keeping your magazine to the conventions is to makes sure that it keeps consistent with the colour scheme of older issues but still making it different. Have a few fonts that you will use on a regular basis to keep it consistent. Link articles with front page and contents page so that people know what is in the issue and also where to find it easily.Liam Reilly
