USE OF INSITUTIONAL INFORMATION

The Weinstein Company is an American film studio The Weinstein company distributed films, specifically dramas such as Youth In Revolt and Blue Valentine. This film studio released other dramas and so this is keeping in consistency with the convention of our genre. We used the convention of an American film studio distributing a British film as this enables films to gain a wider international audience . In our coursework production, we developed the use of institutional information by using British production and mini major film distribution companies in order to market our production. This is in keeping with the films we researched such as Now Is Good and 500 Days of Summer which were successful films of the Drama genre that were distributed by smaller companies.BBC Films is the feature film branch of the BBC, which produces popular British films such as Fish Tank and An Education. In an attempt to stay true to the genre of our product, it was appropriate to use BBC Films as the production company for the drama as it is a British film. Furthermore, it works with major international and UK film distributors.

USE OF TITLES AND FONT TYPESWe used the convention of black background and a white typeface of the Dramatic film titles we researched(See Image 4 and 5) In the Drama film ‘The Words’, the gradient background of the Words (See Image 4)and the blurred typeface of the title creates an nostalgic atmosphere lending to the notion of a return to the past or the emergence of past memory. We developed the convention (See Image 3) by using a light blue font on a black background, in the stylistic and cotemporary font ‘Ever After’. Whereas, in The Words, a font similar to Times New Roman has been used which denotes maturity and is easily recognisable. When identifying the conventions of titling in trailers, we identified the black background and the use of a font type in a contrasting colour (See Image 5). We used and developed this convention as the title of our film is not justified or centrally aligned, it has been positioned with a right alignment which is a modern and polished form of presentation. We adjusted the kerning of our titling(See Image 3 ) in order to increase the spacing between the lettering which is a further development of typical conventions of titling and font types of the romantic dramas researched, as previous film titles (See Image 4 and 5) tended to have standardised kerning and tracking.

EDITING

The use of editing was vital in the development of our production as it was used to show the character development of the central protagonist and his relationship with other characters as the narrative progressed. The use of editing allowed us to focus on a corner of the shot while the protagonist was walking creating an atmosphere of nostalgia and reflection. In our production, we modified the colouring of the shot in which the central protagonist is walking away from the camera (See Image 6) and through the software Final Cut, we changed the ‘O’ or origin of the shot so that the shot focused on the streetlight in the top left hand corner. This is a development of the conventions of typical Drama trailers that were researched.
