What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Page 2: Question 3 BY KATIE

Research

As our film is an Independent film working on a small budget, we’d have to stick to distributors who would help us out. These would be distributors like:

➔ Paramount

➔ Film 4

➔ Lionsgate

➔ Summit Entertainment

ResearchThrough my research, I have also

discovered that the 6 main distributing companies are Universal Studios, Walt

Disney, Warner Bros, Columbia, Paramount and 20th Century Fox. These

are distributors that constantly distribute some of the world’s most famous films,

from children’s films to horror films. The key difference between the films they

distribute and ours is the size in budget the amount of time spent on them, and

the fact that their films will always get a lot of reception at the box office. For

example, Jurassic World was distributed by Universal Studios and earned over

$1.670 billion.

Paramount PicturesParamount is one of the ‘Big 6’ distribution companies all around the world. It is one of the oldest surviving film studios in the world and is America’s oldest running studio, having been founded in 1912. Included in Paramounts divisions are Nickelodeon Films and also MTV Films. Paramount has distributed thrillers such Psycho and Jack Reacher, so has some experience with working with the thriller genre. One of the highest grossing films distributed in America is Titanic, which grossed over $658billion. Other films distributed by Paramount include Forrest Gump and Indiana Jones series.

Summit EntertainmentSummit Entertainment is an

American distribution and production company with offices based in the UK. It is a subsidiary of Lionsgate

Entertainment. Summit Entertainment hit a major success

when they distributed one of the most well known franchises, Twilight.

Some films distributed by Summit Entertainment are Criminal, Child 44

and The Last Witch Hunter. However, Summit Entertainment does not go in

our favour due to us being an independent film and them not

distributing any independent films.

LionsgateLionsgate is a Canadian-American production and distribution company. It is the largest and most successful mini-major film studio in North America. It also focuses on independent and foreign films. Lionsgate also distributed American Psycho which is one of our comparable films. The highest grossing film that they have produced is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in 2013 which grossed over $424billion. Other films include The Divergent series and Now You See Me. Having distributed films with similar traits to ours, such as American Psycho and other films such Saw and The Cabin in the Woods, Lionsgate would be a good distribution company to go with.

Finalised Distributor: Film 4Regarding how distributors go, Film4

would be a better option than Working Title. This is because Film4 is more

equipped with distributing low budgeted films and other independent films, such

as This is England and The Inbetweeners, which really only stayed within the

borders of the UK. As well as this, Film4 distributed the film Iron Lady outside of

the UK in Australia and the United States, earning a high gross in the end. Film4 are

also a very well known distributing company, which will help boost our film. They have also backed a lot of other UK Independent films which is useful for us

as we do not have the skills or budget to invest in large marketing campaigns.
