Mainstream Films•They have a medium – to big budget.•The cast will almost always have well known actors and actresses in it to attract more of an audience to watch the film.•The film genre attracts a wide mainstream audience, it’s typical of the genre for example Se7en is about two detectives trying to catch a serial killer.•High production values and they will use amazing special effects – if needed. •They will have high profile marketing so a trailer being put on the television and online for everyone to see, posters, billboards, film awards and with all this marketing it will intrigue audiences to go and see it.•Examples of mainstream media institutions are Paramount (Along Came Spider) and New Line Cinema (Se7en)

Independent Films•They have a low budget to make their films.•The actors and actresses staring in it will be new and not very well known.•The genre of the film will attract a smaller audience so for example a British Film like Kidulthood, it’s specifically for British people and people in America for example would not really be intrigued by that type of film.•There are no amazing special effects and the production values reflect low budget. •It would be a small marketing campaign so for example it would be shown at film festivals.•Examples of independent media institutions are Lionsgate (The Holding) and Pathe (Adulthood).

Difference between Mainstream films and Independent

• I think our film falls into the mainstream category because the genre and storyline would attract a wide range of audience. It could be set anywhere, our film can be easily adapted so it’s set in America rather than in the UK. I also think that it’s a film that big actors and actresses could star in, with a bigger budget potential special effects could be used as well to make our film more dramatic and interesting to watch. The storyline isn’t very niche and quite typical of a thriller genre with there being a kidnapping and two detectives trying to figure out who the kidnapper is, why they kidnapped the person and trying to find the person kidnapped.

• The film Along Came Spider is similar to our storyline and had the film company Paramount pictures, with this being a successful it also shows how our film is more a mainstream film than independent.

Typical Thriller Actors/Actresses • Typical thriller actors for the male lead would be

Tom Cruise or Leonardo Dicaprio because they have been in many successful thriller films and would be an obvious option to use in this type of film.

• Tom Cruise who has starred in the successful franchise that is Mission Impossible and the thrilling film Collateral. Because our film does have similar aspects to Collateral Tom Cruise would play our antagonist well where has Leonardo Dicaprio would play a better detective rather than an antagonist.

• I think there should also be a younger male detective to get a wide range of audience someone like Ryan Gosling who starred in Drive.

• A young female star to act as the hostage could be Emma Stone who has a huge fan base of young adults.

• If a mainstream film company such as Paramount were interested in our film it would be exhibited in big cinemas such as Odeon and cine world.

• I think if successful stars are in the film it they could be up for awards such as the BAFTA’s.

• Potential box office figures could be $16,712,407 (USA) and £2,576,087 (UK).

• Using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook would help it direct to a wide range of audiences from 15 year olds to 40 year olds. Another thing is we can make apps for smart phones where there can be deals off when they see the film in the cinema and games to play that are some what to do with the film. Using social networking sites are a really good way to promote films for it to become successful people spend a lot of their time in the day on websites such as twitter and Facebook so for it to be advertised there it will spark an interest.
