Question 5: How did you

attract/address your

audience?

Page 2: Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

Research & Planning:

When writing my proposal I thought about how my magazine could reflect the genre in a more traditional way. I wanted to focus on the artists themselves and how they are more than ‘just music’ they are about style and presentation. This I think was important to look at my research in a way that was influenced by lifestyle and self reflection (in the mindset of my target audience) of the person who listens to music.

When I found my research I made sure I stuck to interesting points I found to show the use of genre and target audience conventions.

Photography:

When looking back at my research into shot types and mise-

en-scene (costume mostly) I had kept to the information I

had discovered for my audience representation. I started

targeting both genders by featuring a male and female

within my target demographic.

My images were how I was overall representing my target

audience and genre, so it was curtail I got them perfect. I

uploaded my images to facebook and asked people for

feedback. My most constructive commenter was my

friend Georgia who is obsessed with indie bands and

photos. I used her opinions to make sure I had selected

the photographs that would work best for an

indie/acoustic magazine.

Page 4: Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

I asked my target audience and people who were

fans of the genre what they thought when they

randomly saw the composition of my design

work. Here is a bullet point list of comments I

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that I only

used photos with a

blank background to

make the artists stand

out more.

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that I used

this ‘dramatic’ effect

for the cover to grab

my target audience’s

attention.

This comment I took

into consideration

however this photo

didn’t make the final

DPS because I

thought others fitted

the target audience

better.

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that

included some more

two shot on my DPS. I

didn’t choose this one

because of how

different it was to the

others and would

have affected the

consistency of my

design.

This comment I took

however I felt there

were better shot of

Kiera that met the

genre conventions.

This comment I took

used the different eye

focuses in another

two shot to add this

element into my DPS.

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that I used

some shots with the

hat in to incorporate

the ‘quirky’ prop to

show costume

conventions. This comment I took into

consideration and made sure

that I used photos with this

lighting, as it picked up the

shadows on her face really

well and looked like a

professional magazine shoot.

This comment I took into

consideration and made

sure that I had some shots

of Kiera that looked feisty

like this one. I’m not sure

why I didn’t use this shot,

but it was mostly likely due

to issues with enough

space.

This comment I took into

consideration and made

sure that I had some

vertical shots alongside

horizontal shots. I wanted

a two shot to have this

casual element, so I chose

a variation of the cover

image with this relaxed

feel.

This comment I

took into

consideration and

made sure that I

used a photo like

this on my DPS

(which I did).

This comment I

took into

consideration and

made sure that I

kept Kiera mostly

in the foreground.

This comment I took

into consideration and

tried to recreate this

mood without

disrupting the

consistency in design.

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that I had

included light and

dark in my photos to

create this visually

appealing blend.

This comment I took into

consideration and

because I had received

similar feedback of light

and dark, I chose this two

shot to bring comments

together to fulfil target

audience and

conventions.

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that I used

this pose and mise-

en-scene. I think the

shot distance works

well here, and shows

off the centre framing.

used a similar

shot distance for

one of the photos

on my contents

and DPS.

This comment I took

used photos with a

blank background to

make the artists stand

out more.

This comment I took

into consideration

and made sure that I

used this dark

intensity for my front

cover to give the

same reaction. This comment I took into

consideration and made

sure that I used photos that

captured Kiera in the same

way that makes her hair

look this way and makes her

eyes look brighter.

This comment I took

into consideration

and made sure that I

used a shot that was

taken straight after

this one so only the

pose altered. Apart

from that change the

photos were

identical.

This comment I took into

consideration because it

had such a strong reaction

and it was so different from

most of my other images I

thought this one would be a

good shot to use enlarged

on my contents page. I think

the posing was strong

enough to pull it off.

This comment I took

into consideration and

made sure that I used

photographs that had

sense of contrast so

they stood out on the

page. They weren’t as

intense as this one, but

did incorporate the

essence.

This comment I took into

consideration and made

sure that I used shots with

active looking poses, I

didn’t want my

photographs to look static

as if they just stood

around. That’s why I used

the show of her hair

flicking for my DPS.

This comment I took into

consideration and made

sure that I had sense of

difference to my imagery

that doesn’t seem the

same as other

magazines. I think this

helped my magazine

stay original.

This comment I took into

consideration and made sure

that I used shots where Kiera

had her eyes panning down the

camera to make the magazine

personal/relevant to add a

sense of communication with

the reader. I think the way it

showed only her looking

matched other positive

feedback I had received.

Page 12: Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

Her hair is very natural, a convention in the representation of Indie

musicians, her long wavy hair shows the connotations and stereotype

fulfilled. It shows a down-to-earth tone about the magazine and how

this is about music not the perfection of an artists hair that might

occur for a pop magazine.

Both their eyes are panning down the camera lens to give a sense

of direct address and personal relevance. This gives a sense of

communication with the artist and the reader. This was important

to set up from the start as it fulfils the point interview – to

communicate to a reader about the artist. This look was mentioned

in my target audience feedback, so I thought it was important to

bring it forward on my front cover. The darkness around their eyes

also fulfils the ‘spooky’ comment about being dark and intense.

Using this allowed me to attract my target audience’s attention

because it’s so different to brightly lit front covers that’s

everywhere today.

The hat was used as a convention of the

representation of ‘Indies’ I discovered in my

Research & Planning which proved ‘quirky’ from

Target Audience feedback.

The weaving of the

masthead is

unconventional (most

opt for behind or in

front) which gave my

vertical masthead

originality. I think using

lower case was more

appropriate for the

genre than capitals. I

think capitals would

have seemed too

aggressive for my laid

back style of magazine

and visually this

appeals to my target

audience.The mise-en-scene

shows the genre and is

relevant to music. It

contrasts against the

lighter black background

in a way that isn’t

distracting.

Both their hands

are placed like a

school photo, this

link to education

and style of look

presents a preppy

edge to the artists

that fulfils the

genre and artist

representation

stereotype.

The price is really

important to show the

class of the target

audience, £2.85 may

seem expensive to a

working class reader,

however for employed

middle class people, it

isn’t far off £2.50, which

was the price fedback to

me in my research &

planning. I think this

reasonable.

The names of artists in the

magazine are underlined to

highlight the genre and attract an

indie music fan of bands that they

are likely to be interested in.

Highlighting significant people on

the cover follows some conventions

of addressing a target audience. I

think this shows the representation

of fans as people who want to be

informed of their favourite artists

not entertained. The black text

boxes makes the cover lines

standout and fulfils genre

conventions of interesting design

and features that are unique to that

brand. Continuing this onto my

contents page shows consistency

Using the baby sky blue

only once on the cover

highlights the significance

of the link to that colour

and looks visually

interesting as a pattern

amongst the cover lines.

The use of column and

lines is more noticeable

with this between the

greys,

* Pull out quote and

differences in font

slightly show magazine

conventions. This

variation used for each

cover line gives is a

more professional

quality. This was my

only quote and slight

form of plug on my

cover. I decided to use

grey because it was a

colour that worked well

in co-ordinating with the

black and white

photography which

looked slightly grey-

scale. I helps the blue

stand out between the

two greys . I didn’t use

any additional puffs,

plugs or stand out

colour choices because

I wanted to keep a

simplicity that suited the

genre conventions and

show off the background

mise-en-scene more.

This would have been

hidden if I had what

looked like stickers

slapped over my main

image to make it look

tacky.

*

Page 13: Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

The repetition of blue font and colour with black text

box shows a consistency in design and relates to the

same person highlighted on the cover. It works as a

caption to the photograph well because of the strong

image has a feisty pull quote alongside it. I used this

to relate to my feedback given from my target

audience to show how I was attracting them. The

bold font with the description underneath matches

the style of font layout on the adjacent page. Having

the caption as a pull quote looks more interesting

and appealing to the target audience because it

works similar to a plug without looking obvious or

tacky. I think the positioning isn’t too dominating over

the rest of the page but it highlighted enough to

stand out.

The repetition

of masthead

for the

contents page

title shows the

consistency in

design by

relating to the

front cover,

I’ve used the

same

technique of

overlapping

the image with

the text to give

the brand a

significant

look. This

fulfilment of

convention

makes the

magazine look

more

professional

but also sticks

to the

convention of

a quirky indie

magazine.

The repetition of mise-en-scene as the photography set to show it’s a music

magazine, fulfilling the conventions of the genre as well. The use of black and white

photography throughout matches the front cover and represents the conventions of

attracting target audience I looked at during my research and planning. The

consistency of design adds professionalism and the look of a real media product.

The repetition of

background colour

throughout keeps the

consistency of design and

colour scheme. It attracts

the target audience by

keeping a constant theme

and showing the

conventions of the genre

through connotations of

colour. Grey can be seen

as thoughtful, something

that reflects the indie

music and artists.

The use of social

media represents the

target audience

through age. It attracts

them through interest

and lifestyle, this

matches my research

and planning. It

appeals to their other

past times, so by

combining both music

and other ways to

spend time it conveys

and link and feel of

attraction and

The layout of text matches the caption on the

photograph, showing a consistency in design layout. It

shows the conventions of a music magazine which

should appeal to a music fan. The contents include the

cover lines on the front cover linking with what’s

advertised on the front cover to what’s actually inside.

The descriptions appeal to the target audience by giving

them a hint into what they want to read about and use

forms of features that they would expect to see (article,

interview, biography etc.) in a music magazine. Not

labelling every page shows the conventions of a real

magazine, I have used short amounts of text appeal to a

young demographic and represent an image focused

target audience (links to instagram/twitter/tumblr) who

use social media sites that focus on using images rather

than blocks of text.

The repetition of black text boxes to highlight headings

matches the design on the front cover to keep the

consistency, The use of the blue font colour uses the key

colour of the issue and looks visual. It connotates to the

indie genre to attract and appeal to the target audience.

Page 14: Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

The repetition mise-en-scene shows the genre and is

relevant to music. It contrasts against the lighter

black background to stand out and show the

representation of a modern music scene. It keeps

the consistency of design throughout the front

cover, contents and DPS.

The one column of text

looks really obviously

placed and adds a sense

of importance to what is

said. The consistent use

of one grey background

keeps the genre colour

conventions throughout. It

co-ordinates well with the

black and white

photographs.

The youthful and

energetic image

shows my inclusion of

feedback and how I

have used movement

to represent the young

target audience and

appealed to what they

find stimulating to find

in a music magazine.

It adds a sense of life

to the stereotyped

indie music which

conventionally is very

thoughtful. I have

included this to blend

with the stereotype

and not seem two

dimensional.

The use of a two shot

in a casual manner

was something that

was positively fedback

to me, I wanted to

include the thoughts I

was given and having

a similar image to the

cover keeps design

consistency and style.

It features the mise-

en-scene to attract

and appeal to the

target audience and

shows off the genre

conventions.

This is an image that was well received amongst my target audience,

the red edit over it adds a moodiness and attitude to the image and

uses the conventions of how youths are seen in today’s media. I have

kept my male artist in a hat throughout because it shows the quirky

conventions of the style of artists and their representations, target

audience and genre.

The repetition of blue

colour scheme and black

text box highlights the

subtitle and design

consistency that is kept

throughout my three

elements. It stands out

because it has only been

used once. It uses chatty

language to give the style

of the feature and relates

to the young target

audience, which should

attract and appeal to

them. It’s an informal

address that adds a

relevant sense of

communication. The

vocabulary is fairly basic,

but guides the audience

into the feature with ease.

The repetition of including an internet association keeps the target

audience in mind and shows the representation of the younger

generation of today’s western culture. It relates back to the contents

page, with the representation fulfilling the stereotype that connotates

to how indie music is seen and communicated with it’s target

audience. It communicates the ideology that indie musicians promote

online and get their word of mouth through videos and web

association. It also matches the youtube nation and how the 16-26

demographic use and consume the media. The idea of exclusivity

and content only they will know about is something that will attract

the target audience and appeal to their want to be individual and

treated like a members only club (links to the jacket fashion).

This look and pose was

commented on in my

target audience

feedback and I think this

shot was the best one to

attract and appeal to

that. The purple edit is

calming, which contrasts

to the harsh tone this

image could portray but

now looks soft and

relevant to the genre.

The use of age brackets

fulfils the conventions of a

real media product but

also points out the target

audience is young. Being

in the middle (roughly) of

the 16-26 bracket shows

it’s not just for teenagers

it’s for early adults. The

font choice is like a

newspaper, or a novel

which stereotypically fits

the ideology of their

lifestyle choice. This link

to other lifestyle aspects

should attract and appeal

to them because it shows

a connection and

understanding of them

which gives the magazine

a sense of personal

communication. Which

adds another appeal.

The use of blog style of writing with catchy sounds and

play on words is presented in an intellectual way to

attract and appeal to the target audience’s interest in

education and internet use (communication and relaxing

past time). It gives the article an upbeat tone which

would relate to the style young adults would want to

read and keeps it fresh and modern, The language isn’t

too colloquial that it couldn’t be appreciated by other

audience's but it keeps it middle class and entertaining.

The description and factual information keeps to the

conventions of a magazine and homes in on the genre

through what is being discussed.

*The turquoise edit

adds visual appeal to

this well received

image that I wanted to

include because of

audience response.

The image’s style

looks professional.

*
