President’s Message

As I live through the darkest part of the year, it is appropriate to think of the ways we bring light to our lives. On the gloomy days in November and early December, we switch on the lights late in the afternoon, if they have not been for reading or sewing during the day. Yikes! Lots of money goes to the electricity company. But once the snow comes, it becomes brighter. Add the decorative lights, and our environment shines once again. We share our good fortune with those who have less, hoping to lighten the load some are forced to carry every single day of the year. This year, we are supporting The Partners In Mission Food Bank by raffling a quilt. The cash will be well-appreciated and will be put to the areas of most need. We are also supporting the orphanages and shelters in Chernobyl. Socks, underwear, puzzles, pretty scarves and costume jewelry. Necessities and treasures for people who have suffered more than I can imagine. Do not forget the large tins for dry foods.

Then, we have our families and friends. People come home for the holidays. It does not matter what you are celebrating, or if you partake at all, we take a break. We are lucky that our country takes a deep breath between Christmas and New Year's. The wheels slow down, except in retail businesses. But even there, some people are happy for the overtime. Sharing our homes is fun and allows us to give to those we love. My daughter is spending the holidays in England, Germany and the Canary Islands. Pretty nice, but she will miss her Christmas Day swim at Bronte Beach! I will miss her. My granddaughter cheers me up because her birthday is on Christmas Eve. It is unbelievable that she is 21 this year. Vegetarian pizza and Key Lime pie are on the menu for that celebration, as they have been the past five years, but this year we will be on Rock Lake, Verona.

I also think about all of the folks who became part of my life this year. Quilters, medical personnel, and even a bus driver. Special in their own ways for me, and I was happy to make a quilt for a nurse's new baby girl. Andrew, the bus driver, cared for us and even decided to make a quilt.

He finished it, as you see in the picture. Celebrate your friends, because they are the ornaments in your life.

I wish that each and every one of you has a wonderful holiday. Merry and bright Christmas wishes to each of you. Take a deep breath and get ready for 2018! Susan

In Appreciation

Dear Quilter: RE: Big Quilt Bee in Support of Canadian Ronald McDonald Houses It is very hard to put into words how overwhelmed we all are having regard to the hugely successful Big Quilt Bee. Thank you hardly covers the deep feeling behind those two little words. I was in attendance at the Bee in Toronto and had a chance to meet quilters from all over Canada and to thank them in person for their contribution. It was an amazing couple of days that I won’t forget. The Big Quilt Bee was by all standards an enormous success and an outstanding Canada 150 undertaking. It is in every way a lasting legacy of Canada’s 150th years and the quilters who worked so hard to make this such a huge success. Each of the Houses are having such wonderful reactions from families with each gift of a quilt that is given. Each one is a gift that will keep on giving through the years. On behalf of the 15 Ronald McDonald Houses, our Boards of Directors, staff and of course all the families who call our Houses “home”, we extend a heartfelt thank you to you for your generosity, time and talent. Each and every gift of a quilt will make a difference in the lives of the recipient family. From all of us……Thank you! Carol Carol Houston CEO/Program Development 407 Smyth Road Ottawa, On. Fidget Workshop On October 26th, we met at Odessa Fairgrounds to work on the Fidget Quilts. Kathy had cut out 6 ½ blocks of various types of material that was donated at our previous workshop as well as creating bags of embellishments for all of us to use. Ideas that were talked about in our last meeting were put to cloth and some of the results were astonishing – Beth’s little doll in a pocket, Joan’s puppy with fringed ears, Lillian’s beautifully embroidered applique and lace blocks, and Brynhild’s striking black, white and red blocks. Everyone benefited from Heather’s valued input into colour, texture and design. Throughout the day people dropped in to give us some of their fabric and join in the fun. There is nothing to compare to the camaraderie we feel when we meet to work together on a project that will bring such delight to people in need.

Travel & Retreats

Hi folks. At this time, I know that we are going to Grand Rapids, August 21-25, 2018. We have a bus and Andrew as our driver. We have electricity and Wi-Fi on the coach. It takes one day, each

way. The rest stops and Duty free stops will be short! We have multi day admission to the show, and the show bag and pin. We do not have beds, yet. They are there, but the paper is not signed. Please do not worry, we are going. Just carry on! Save money and book your time off of work! Start your shopping lists! I have told our travel agent we are finished our meetings in May. We need to be done and dusted very soon.

Homemade Pressing Agent This homemade pressing agent helps to make ironing more enjoyable. It does not flake, clog or leave a white residue on dark fabrics. It is more effective than any starch. As with any product, try it on a sample piece of fabric to see how it reacts before spraying your entire project.

Block of the Month

I hope everyone is enjoying working on their BOM blocks. Many of you are participating and that’s very exciting. I had three people come over for the sewing evening. I was able to show them how to use the Essential triangle tool. I was also able to help a brand-new quilter. I love teaching new quilters. The December blocks are the green blocks. The last of the centre blocks will come out in January, then we can start putting the centre together. Have wonderful holidays everyone and stay warm as the winter sets in.

Library News

So far this year 90 books have been borrowed from the library. And our books sales have been good!

We have a new Primitive Quilts magazine (winter 2017) as well as a new Block magazine (Fall 2017).

This will be my last news report. As of January 2018, Sandra Halliday and Anne Smithers will be taking over

the library. They both work at Queen's library so they are very qualified to run our Guild library. I have

enjoyed my last three plus years on the library committee! Thank you all for your support during that

time! And have a very happy Christmas season!

Community Quilts

We have been very busy this fall. I apologize that the report for the September workshop was not properly submitted for the October newsletter, so below is a report for September, October and November. The September workshop was held September 12, 2017 and twelve ladies attended. We had a very busy day and as usual a lot was accomplished. There were several bags of donated fabric that was sorted and put away. Nine quilts were pin-basted, several quilt tops were designed and put together. We had a superb pot luck lunch (as always!) including Gerrie (Annie’s husband) making a delicious soup. Annie received 20 quilt tops and 130 blocks from the Vice-President of C.Q.A. These were left over from their request for blocks to make quilts for Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada. The blocks were quilted at the Canada Quilt Show in Toronto in June. Their goal was to send 1000 quilts to Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada. The response was overwhelming. They received enough for 4,000 quilts. They decided to send 2,000 quilts out and the remainder they sent back to participating guilds to complete and send to charities of their choice. We will be making up kits and will send the completed quilts to various places in Kingston. St. George’s Cathedral is sponsoring another Syrian refugee family, so we will be planning and making quilts for when they arrive. The October workshop was held October 10, 2017. Seven members attended. We had a great pot-luck lunch as usual. Two other members dropped off completed projects and picked up more to do. Seven quilts were pin-basted and coordinating bindings made. One quilted top was squared up and binding sewn on for another member to quilt. More fabric from “The Sale” was sorted. Some of it was used immediately for borders. $1,028.30 was raised from “The Sale” of donated material at the October Guild meeting. Heather Buchan will be taking the donor to the board meeting of “The Food Sharing Project” on Thursday, October 12, 2017 to present the money to the organization. Mary Berry, the donor, is ecstatic about the amount of money raised and that there was still some fabric left for us to use. Heather and Annie delivered 8 quilts to KGH Pediatric Chemotherapy unit to be used in a program focusing on support for siblings who have lost a brother or sister to cancer.

The November workshop was held November 7, 2017. Twelve members attended. Mary Berry who generously donated fabric to the “The Sale” in October, attended as well. Over $2,700 was donated to 2 charities – amazing!! We were very happy to meet her. She loves to iron and was very happy to iron all the backings and various pieces that needed ironing.

Eight quilts were pin-basted, borders put on 3 quilts, 2 bags of donated fabric were sorted and put away. 18-24 quilts will be going to Providence Care. An excellent pot-luck lunch was enjoyed by all.

HELP! We need more quilters. This is an excellent opportunity to practice quilting!! If you take a kit home, please keep the paper work with the quilt kit. It makes it much easier to keep track of each quilt. Everyone is welcome to attend. We meet the Tuesday after our Guild meeting at 1411 Tamarac Street from 10 to 4. Even if you can only donate a part of your time, we would be happy to have you. The pot luck and lunches are a varied treat! If possible, please let Annie know by phone (613-384-4564) or email ([email protected]).

Meet A Guild Member An interview with Susan Torrens

You have a quilting group in Florida where you spend your winters – what are the similarities/differences between these quilters and the quilting group you belong to here? My Florida group is very informal. We meet weekly to work on projects. I provide a pattern or two over the winter, but many work on their own projects. I help beginners learn the skills required to make a successful project, and provide help with any problems/questions. We have outings to attend quilt shows, and work on a charity project each winter.

Electronic Quilt 7 (EQ7) is an application that is part of your quilting tools? Why do you use it? Is it difficult to learn to use? My computer is a great tool, and using it to design quilts, play with colour choices, and provide cutting instructions saves me lots of time. The software comes with a large manual that takes you step-by-step through a basic project. There are lessons available to download, videos to watch, and online classes through EQ University! Their tech support is excellent too. I draw each quilt I make in EQ, and it allows me to easily make the quilt larger or smaller, change the borders, add sashing etc.

Have you ordered material through the internet? How do you know what the quality of the fabric is that you have ordered? I order fabric online fairly regularly. If I don’t know the seller/shop, I’ll ask if anyone on my newsgroup has shopped there, and if they were satisfied with the fabric. I’ve never had a problem with any of my orders, and I’ve been very satisfied with the quality and service. Online shops want repeat customers, as do all shops.

Have you taken a tutorial on-line? If so could you recommend one for beginners? I have occasionally watched a tutorial. Kari Schell is a teacher for Electric Quilt, and she offers occasional tutorials on her blog. http://www.onpointquilter.com/ I have also watched some tutorials offered free through The Quilt Show Newsletter. I don’t pay to watch the shows, but enjoy the information shared in their newsletter. https://thequiltshow.com/

How did you become so comfortable navigating the internet? My husband worked with computers, and our sons became interested at an early age, and I felt it was important to keep up. Originally, I used the computer to print items – easier to correct than a typewriter. I also learned to use basic spreadsheets for financial records, and databases to keep records of items, mailing lists, etc. When the internet became readily available, my son suggested I join a quilting newsgroup. I have “pen pals” around the world, all with an interest in

Page 13: Quips · 2017. 12. 12. · Page 4 of 17 Quips In Appreciation Dear Quilter: RE: Big Quilt Bee in Support of Canadian Ronald McDonald Houses It is very hard to put into words how overwhelmed

Quips

quilting, and have met several during our travels and at quilt shows. I’ve always been a “tool” girl, and love items that make my life easier. Good anti-virus software is a must!

You often take pictures at our Guild meetings for our website – do you use your camera to capture pictures of ideas for your quilts? I have an extensive file of photos for inspiration. I take pictures at quilt shows, but usually only of specific details – an interesting border, unusual binding, interesting quilting design etc.

How do you keep track of all the quilts that you have made? Do you remember them, or keep a paper diary? I have photo records of most of the quilts that I have made. I also have spreadsheets for the last 8 years, listing the name of the quilt, size, yardage and date completed. Since I blog about quilting, I often take pictures during the process, so I keep all the pictures in file folders, sorted by year of completion. I also keep a backup of all my files on a portable hard drive.

How has the use of the internet made it easier for beginners to enter the Quilting world? I think that the ability to find pictures of quilts, along with patterns, books, fabrics, online tutorials helps those interested in quilting to find inspiration. There are so many styles of quilting, it is fun to be exposed to them all!

Would you please share some of your favourite quilting sites with us? Check out the fabric manufacturer’s websites – some have free patterns Most quilt designers have a website, blog, newsletter or facebook page http://theinboxjaunt.com Machine quilting including lots of photo tutorials http://quiltville.blogspot.ca Bonnie Hunter – scrap quilter. Duties for Monthly Groups Selling 50/50 tickets, selling Fat Quarter tickets, selling dinner tickets, assisting the guest speaker, assisting setting-up and cleaning the snack table, hanging Show and Tell, taking books in and out for the library, attendance, and tidying after the December and June dinners. You may be asked to do more than one job, during an evening, but they are easy and a great way to meet people and to say hello. The following are the group setups for this year, however, as you know, life sometimes has a way of affecting our plans, so you may be asked to change the month assigned to you. We will try to give you as much notice as we possibly can. If your name appears in a month that you cannot attend, please contact Holly Lavergne at 613-386-5209 or [email protected]. Please do not worry if your name does not appear on any of the lists as we need extra people if something happens.
