Inhaling exhaust fumestherefore represents a

health hazard and can evencause loss of consciousness withfatal consequences.Do not inhale exhaust fumes.Do not run the engine in closedrooms.

Burn hazard

Engine and exhaust systembecome very hot when the

vehicle is in use. There is a riskof burn injuries by contact withhot surfaces. After parking the motorcycle, make sure that nobody comesinto contact with the engine andexhaust system.

Catalytic converterIf misfiring causes unburned fuelto enter the catalytic converter, there is a danger of overheatingand damage.

For this reason, observe the fol-lowing points:

Do not run the fuel tank dryDo not run the engine with thespark-plug cap removedStop the engine immediately ifit misfiresUse unleaded fuel onlyComply with all specified main-tenance intervals.

Unburned fuel will destroythe catalytic converter.

Note the points listed for protec-tion of the catalytic converter.

Danger of overheating

Cooling would be inade-quate if the engine were al-

lowed to idle for a lengthy periodwith the motorcycle at a stand-still: overheating would result. Inextreme cases, the motorcyclecould catch fire.Do not allow the engine to idle

unnecessarily. After starting, rideoff immediately.

Modifications

Modifications of the mo-torcycle (e.g. engine man-

agement system, throttle valves, clutch) can cause damage to theaffected components and fail-ure of safety-related functions.Damage caused in this way isnot covered by the warranty.Do not make any modifications.

Brake padsNew brake pads must be run inbefore they achieve their opti-mum friction force. This initialreduction in braking efficiencycan be compensated for by ex-erting greater pressure on thebrake levers.

New brake pads can extendstopping distance by a sig-

nificant margin.Brake early.

TiresNew tires have a smooth sur-face. This must be roughened byriding in a restrained manner atvarious lean angles until the tiresare run in. This running in proce-dure is essential if the tires are toachieve maximum grip.

New tires do not providefull tire traction. Accident

hazards exist in particular on wetroads and at extreme angles.

Always think well ahead andavoid extreme angles.

Shifting gearswith hear-shift assistancePro OE

Gearshift assistant ProThe gearshift assistant provideshelp with upward and downwardgear shifts without the clutch orthe accelerator having to be op-erated. This is not an automatictransmission. The rider is an es-sential part of the system andmakes the decision as to whento change gear.

More detailed informationon Pro Gear-shift Assis-

tance can be found in the section"Technology in detail".

tance function, the cruise control

The gears are shifted into asusual with foot force on theshift lever. The sensor 1 on the gear-levershaft detects the intention tochange gear and initiates gear-shift assistance. When driving at constantspeed in low gears at highrevs, changing gear withoutusing the clutch can result inmajor load change reactions.BMW Motorrad recommendsonly changing gear using the

clutch in such situations. Theshifting assistant should notbe used in the area of the rev-limiter.No shifting support is providedin the following situations:If the clutch is operatedIf the gear lever is not in thezero positionWhen changing up with thethrottle closed (overrunningmode) or when decelerating. To be able to make anothergear shift using gear-shift as-sistance, the gear lever mustbe fully released after the firstgear change.

BrakesHow do you achievethe shortest stoppingdistances? The dynamic load distribution be-tween the front and rear wheelchanges during braking. Theheavier you brake, the greaterthe weight transfer to the frontwheel. Increases in the load atan individual wheel are accom-panied by a rise in the effectivebraking force that the wheel canprovide. To achieve the shortest possiblebraking distance, the front brakemust be applied quickly and withincreasing force. This procedureprovides ideal exploitation of theextra weight transfer to the frontwheel. The clutch should also bedisengaged at the same time. With the extreme emergencybraking technique that motor-cyclists are often trained to use,

whereby maximum braking forceis applied as rapidly and as pow-erfully as possible, the dynamicweight transfer cannot keep upwith the increase in the deceler-ation rate so that the full brakingforce cannot be transferred tothe road surface.Locking up of the front wheelis prevented by BMW MotorradIntegral ABS.

Descending mountainpasses

There is a danger of thebrakes fading if you use

only the rear brakes whendescending mountain passes.Under extreme conditions, thebrakes could overheat and suffersevere damage.Use both front and rear brakes, and make use of the engine'sbraking effect as well.

RefuelingFuel specificationsFor optimal fuel economy, thegasoline should be sulfur-free orvery low in sulfur content.

Leaded fuel will destroy thecatalytic converter.

Do not refuel with leaded gaso-line or gasoline with metallicadditives, e. g. manganese orIron.

Ethanol E85 might damagethe engine and fuel supply

system.Do not refuel with E85, i.e. fuelwith an ethanol content of 85 %,or with Flex Fuel.

Fuels with a maximum ethanolcontent of 10 %, meaning"E10," may be used for refu-eling. Ethanol should satisfythe quality standards for US(ASTM 4806–xx) and Canada(CGSB-3.511–xx). “xx” - com-

ply with the current standard ineach case.

Recommended fuel qual-ity

Refueling procedure

Fuel is highly flammable.Fire at the fuel tank can

result in fire and explosion.Do not smoke. Never bring anaked flame near the fuel tank.

Fuel expands when ex-posed to heat. When the

tank is overfilled, fuel can escapeand get onto the road. This re-sults in a danger of falling.Do not overfill the fuel tank.

Fuel attacks plastic sur-faces, making them cloudy

or unattractive.Immediately wipe off plastic partsafter contact with fuel.

Make sure ground is level andfirm and place motorcycle onside stand.

The available fuel tank vol-ume can only be optimally

used with the vehicle standing onthe side stand.

RAINROAD

with Pro driving modesOE

DYNAMIC

Each riding mode affects thebehavior of the motorcycle in adifferent way. The ASC can beswitched off in each mode; theexplanations below always referto what happens when the sys-tem is switched on. The last se-lected riding mode is reactivatedautomatically after the ignition isswitched off and on again. The following rule always applies:the more dynamic the selected

mode, the less assistance thereis from the ASC.Therefore, consider the followingwhen selecting the riding mode:the more dynamic the setting, the greater are the demands onthe skill of the rider!

Throttle response:In RAIN modes: restrainedIn ROAD modes: direct

with Pro driving modesOE

In DYNAMIC mode: dynamic

RAIN modeThe ASC system intervenes earlyenough to prevent the rear wheelfrom spinning. On road surfaceswith high to medium grip (dryand wet asphalt to dry cobble-stones) the motorcycle remainsvery stable; movements of thetail are clearly perceptible only onslippery road surfaces (wet bitu-men or wet cobblestones).

ROAD modeThe point at which the ASC sys-tem intervenes is later than inRAIN mode. On road surfaceswith high to medium grip (dryand wet asphalt to dry cobble-stones) the motorcycle remainsstable. Slight rear-wheel drift isperceptible. Movements of thetail are clearly perceptible on slip-pery road surfaces (wet bitumenor wet cobblestones).

DYNAMIC modeDYNAMIC mode is the mostsports-performance mode. The point at which the ASC sys-tem intervenes is even later, which means that even on dryasphalt drifting is possible undersharp acceleration when corner-ing.

Your motorcycle is equipped withthe gear-shift assistance functionoriginally developed for racing butnow specially adapted for tour-ing use. It allows you to changeup or down in almost any loadconditions and rev bands withoutoperating the clutch or accelera-tor.

Throttle does not have to beclosed when changing gearunder acceleration. When decelerating and chang-ing down (throttle closed) theengine speed is adjusted byintermediate accelerator opera-tion.The gear-shift time is shorterthan when using the clutch tochange gear.

For the system to detect the rid-er's intention to change gear, the previously unoperated gearlever has to be moved againstthe force of the spring by a cer-tain amount of "overtravel" in thedesired direction with a normalto brisk action and held in thatposition until the gear change iscompleted. by controlled intervention in thesemi-integrated ABS systemwithout the rider having to con-stantly operate the brake lever. Thus, when Hill Start Control isactivated, the pressure in the rearbrake system is built up so thatthe motorcycle remains station-ary on a sloping surface. Theholding pressure in the brakingsystem depends on the gradientof the slope.

tion between the front and rearbrakes during braking by meansof ABS modulation to suit theload carried by the motorcycle.

Spinning of the rear wheelwith the front brake applied

(Burn Out) is prevented by theintegral function. The result maybe damage to the rear wheelbrake and the clutch.Do not attempt Burn Outs.

How does the IntegralABS work? The maximum braking force thatcan be transferred to the roadsurface is partially dependent onthe friction coefficient of the roadsurface. Gravel, ice, snow andwet roads offer a considerablylower friction coefficient than adry, clean asphalt surface. Thepoorer the friction coefficient ofthe road surface is, the longerthe braking distance will be.

If the maximum transferable brak-ing force is exceeded when therider increases the brake pres-sure, the wheels begin to lockand driving stability is lost, anda fall can result. Before this sit-uation occurs, ABS is activatedand the brake pressure is ad-justed to the maximum transfer-able braking force. This enablesthe wheels to continue to turnand maintains driving stability re-gardless of the road surface con-dition.

What happens whenrough roads areencountered?Bumpy or rough roads can brieflylead to a loss of contact be-tween the tires and the road sur-face, until the transferable brak-ing force is reduced to zero. Ifbraking is carried out in this sit-uation, ABS must reduce thebrake pressure to ensure driv-

ing stability when restoring con-tact to the road. At this point intime, the BMW Motorrad IntegralABS must assume extremely lowfriction coefficients (gravel, ice, snow) so that the running wheelsturn in every imaginable case andthe driving stability is ensured. After detecting the actual con-ditions, the system adjusts theoptimum brake pressure.

In what ways is theIntegral ABS noticeableto the rider? If the ABS system has to reducethe braking force due to the con-ditions described above, thenvibrations can be felt through thehandlebar brake lever. If the handbrake lever is pulled, then braking pressure is built upat the rear wheel with the integralfunction. If the footbrake lever isfirst actuated after this, the brakepressure already built up can be

felt earlier than the counter-pres-sure, than when the footbrakelever is actuated before or to-gether with the handbrake lever.

Lifting off rear wheelHowever, during extremely heavyand rapid decelerations it is pos-sible that the BMW Motorrad In-tegral ABS cannot prevent therear wheel from lifting off theground. In these cases, the mo-torcycle can also flip end overend.

Heavy braking can lead tothe rear wheel lifting off the

ground. When braking, bear in mindthat the ABS control cannotalways be relied on to preventthe rear wheel from lifting off theground.

What are the designcharacteristics of theIntegral ABS ?The BMW Motorrad Integral ABSensures driving stability on anysurface within the limits of driv-ing physics. The system is notoptimized for special require-ments resulting under extremeweather conditions off-road or onthe racetrack. Handling shouldbe adopted to driving skills androad conditions.

Special situationsTo detect the tendency of thewheels to lock up, the speedsof the front and rear wheel arecompared. If implausible valuesare detected over an extendedperiod of time, the ABS functionis deactivated for safety reasonsand an ABS fault is indicated. The condition for a fault code isthe completed self-diagnosis.

Apart from problems on theBMW Motorrad Integral ABS,unusual riding conditions canalso cause a fault message to begenerated.

Heating up on the main or aux-iliary stand at idle or with gearengaged.Rear wheel locked-up for alonger period of time by en-gine brake, e.g. when ridingdownhill on slippery surfaces.

Should a fault code occur due toan unusual driving condition, theABS function can be reactivatedby switching the ignition off andthen on again.

How important is regularmaintenance?

Any technical system is al-ways only as good as its

maintenance condition. To ensure that theBMW Motorrad Integral ABS is in

a properly maintained condition, itis vital that the specified serviceintervals are kept to.

Reserves for safetyBut remember: the potentiallyshorter braking distances whichBMW Motorrad Integral ABS per-mits must not be used as an ex-cuse for careless riding. ABS isprimarily a means of ensuring asafety margin in genuine emer-gencies.

Be careful in curves. Whenyou apply the brakes in a

curve, the motorcycle's weightand momentum take over andeven BMW Motorrad ABS is un-able to counteract their effects. The rider is always responsiblefor adapting his/her driving style.Do not reduce the additionalsafety provided with riskydriving.

BMW Motorrad ASCHow does ASC work?BMW Motorrad ASC comparesthe wheel speeds of the frontand rear wheels. From the speeddifference the slip, and with itthe stability reserves on the rearwheel are determined. When aslip limit is exceeded, the enginetorque is adapted by the enginemanagement system.

What are the designfeatures of ASC?BMW Motorrad ASC is an assis-tance system for the rider andis designed for riding on publicroads. The extent to which therider affects ASC control can beconsiderable (weight shifts whencornering, items of luggage looseon the motorcycle), especiallywhen style of riding takes riderand machine close to the limitsimposed by physics.

The system is not optimized forspecial requirements resultingunder extreme weather condi-tions off-road or on the racetrack. In such situations BMW MotorradASC can be switched off.

Even with ASC, the laws ofphysics cannot be overrid-

den. The rider is always respon-sible for adapting his/her drivingstyle.Do not reduce the additionalsafety provided with riskydriving.

Special situationsAs lean angles increase, accel-eration potential is also progres-sively restricted by the laws ofphysics. This can result in de-layed acceleration when comingout of very tight curves.

To detect spinning or slippingaway of the rear wheel, thespeeds of the front andrear wheel are compared. Ifimplausible values are detectedover a longer period of time, theASC function is deactivated forsafety reasons and an ASC erroris indicated. The condition for afault code is the completed self-diagnosis.The following unusual drivingconditions may lead to automaticdeactivation of BMW MotorradASC:

Riding on the rear wheel (per-forming Wheelies) for an ex-tended period with the ASCdeactivated.Spinning the rear wheel on thespot with the front brake ap-plied (Burn Out).Heating up on the main or aux-iliary stand at idle or with gearengaged.

Switching the ignition off and onagain and then riding the mo-torcycle at more than a certainminimum speed reactivates theASC.

Minimum speed for ASCactivation

min 6 mph (min 10 km/h)

With extremely knobbly tires, it ispossible that due to the greaterdegree of slip the ASC will inter-vene before the optimum tractionis obtained. In such cases theBMW Motorrad ASC should beswitched off.

If the front wheel loses contactwith the ground under extremeacceleration, the ASC reducesthe engine torque until the frontwheel makes contact with theground again. In this case, BMW Motorrad rec-ommends turning back the throt-

tle grip somewhat to achievea stable driving state again asquickly as possible.

On a slippery surface, the throt-tle grip should never be sud-denly turned back completelywithout pulling the clutch at thesame time. The engine brak-ing torque can cause the rearwheel to block, resulting in anunstable driving state. This situ-ation cannot be controlled by theBMW Motorrad ASC.

The sensors are equipped with acentrifugal governor, which doesnot enable the transmission ofthe measured readings until thedefined minimum speed is ex-ceeded for the first time.

If an RDC control unit is fittedbut the wheels have no sensors,a fault message is generated.

Tire inflation pressurerangesThe RDC control unit distin-guishes between three inflationpressure ranges matched to themotorcycle:

Inflation pressure within thepermissible tolerance.Inflation pressure at the limitsof the permissible tolerance.Inflation pressure outside thepermissible tolerance.

TemperaturecompensationThe tire inflation pressure is tem-perature dependent, i.e. it in-creases or decreases togetherwith the tire air temperature. Thetire temperature is dependent onthe outside temperature, the rid-ing style and the length of thejourney.

The tire pressures areshown adjusted for tem-

perature on the multifunctiondisplay and are always relativeto the following tire air temper-ature:

68 °F (20 °C)

Tire pressure gages at gas sta-tions do not make any adjust-ment for the air temperature, the tire pressure indicated de-pends on the temperature of theair in the tire. As a result, in mostcases the values displayed theredo not match the values shownin the multifunction display.

Jump-startThe wires leading to thepower socket do not have

a load-capacity rating adequatefor jump-starting the engine. Ex-cessively high current can leadto a cable fire or damage to thevehicle electronics.Do not use the socket tojump-start the engine of themotorcycle.

A short-circuit can resultif the crocodile clips of

the jump leads are accidentallybrought into contact with themotorcycle.Use only jump leads fitted withfully insulated crocodile clips atboth ends.

Jump-starting with a donor-battery voltage higher than

12 V can damage the motorcycleelectronics. The battery of the donor vehiclemust have a voltage of 12 V.

Make sure ground is level andfirm and park motorcycle.Remove battery cover ( 131).When jump-starting the engine,do not disconnect the batteryfrom the onboard electrical sys-tem.

BatteryMaintenance instructionsCorrect battery maintenancecombined with proper chargingand storage procedures extendsthe battery's service life, and isalso required for warranty claims.Compliance with the points be-low is important in order to maxi-mize battery life:

Keep the surface of the batteryclean and dryDo not open the batteryDo not top up with waterBe sure to read and complywith the instructions for charg-ing the battery on the followingpagesDo not turn the battery upsidedown.

If the battery is not discon-nected, the onboard elec-

tronics (clock etc.) will drain thebattery. This can cause the bat-tery to run flat. If this happens, warranty claims will not be ac-cepted.During driving breaks of morethan 4 weeks, a trickle-chargershould be connected to thebattery.

BMW Motorrad has devel-oped a trickle-charger spe-

cially designed for compatibilitywith the electronics of your mo-torcycle. Using this charger, youcan keep the battery chargedduring long periods when themotorcycle is not being usedwithout having to disconnect thebattery from the motorcycle'sonboard systems. Additional in-formation is available at your au-thorized BMW Motorrad retailer.

Charge connected battery

Charging the connectedbattery directly at the bat-

tery terminals can damage themotorcycle electronics. To charge the battery via thebattery terminals, disconnect thebattery first.

If the multifunction displayand indicator lamps fail to

light up when you switch on theignition, the battery is completelydischarged (battery voltage be-low 9 V). Attempts to rechargea completely discharged bat-tery through the onboard powersocket can damage the motorcy-cle's electronic systems.Always charge a completelydrained battery directly at theterminals of the disconnectedbattery.

Charging the battery viathe onboard socket is only

possible with suitable chargers.

Care productsBMW Motorrad recommendsthat you use cleaning andcare products available at yourauthorized BMW Motorradretailer. BMW CareProductshave been materials tested, laboratory tested, and field testedand provide optimum care andprotection for the materials usedin your vehicle.

The use of unsuitablecleaning and care products

can damage motorcyclecomponents. For cleaning, do not use any sol-vents such as nitro-thinners, coldcleaning agents, fuel or similar, and do not use cleaning agentsthat contain alcohol.

Washing your vehicleBMW Motorrad recommendsthat you use BMW Insect Re-mover to soften and wash offinsects and stubborn dirt frompainted parts before washing thevehicle. To prevent stains, do not washthe vehicle immediately after ithas been exposed to bright sun-light and do not wash it in thesun.Make sure that the vehicle iswashed frequently, especiallyduring the winter months. To remove road salt, clean themotorcycle with cold water im-mediately after completion of ev-ery trip.

After washing the motor-cycle, after driving through

water or in the rain, braking canbe delayed owing to damp brakerotors and brake pads.

Brake early until the brake rotorsand brake pads are dry.

Warm water intensifies theeffect of salt.

Only use cold water to removeroad salt.

The high water pressurefrom high-pressure clean-

ers (steam blasters) can result indamage to seals, the hydraulicbrake system, the electrics andthe seat.Do not use a steam jet or high-pressure cleaning equipment.

ChromeCarefully clean chrome parts withplenty of water and BMW carshampoo, especially if the mo-torcycle has been exposed togritting salt. Use chrome polishfor additional treatment.

RadiatorClean the radiator regularly toprevent overheating of the en-gine due to inadequate cooling. For example, use a garden hosewith low water pressure.

Cooling fins can be benteasily.

When cleaning the radiator, en-sure that the fins are not bent.

Rubber partsTreat rubber parts with water orBMW rubber protection coatingagent.

Using silicone sprays forthe care of rubber seals can

cause damage.Do not use silicone sprays orcare products that containsilicone.

Paint careWashing the vehicle on a regu-lar basis will help prevent long-term damage from harmful sub-stances, and is especially impor-tant when your vehicle is usedin areas with high levels of airpollution or where natural con-taminants such as tree resin andpollen are present. However, remove particularly ag-gressive substances (spilled fuel, oil grease, brake fluid as well asbird droppings) immediately; oth-erwise changes in the paint ordiscolorations may occur. BMWMotorrad recommends BMW carpolish or BMW paint cleaner forthe purpose.

Contamination on the paintfinish is particularly easy tosee after the vehicle has beenwashed. Remove such marksas soon as possible using whitespirit or methylated spirits ona clean cloth or cotton pad.BMW Motorrad recommendsusing BMW tar remover forremoving tar spots. Then adda protective wax coating to thepaint at these locations.

using the front wheel and rear-wheel stand offered by BMW).

Protective wax coatingPaint must be protected, if waterno longer pearls up on it.To preserve the finish of yourvehicle, BMW Motorrad recom-mends BMW Car Wax or agentsthat contain carnauba or syn-thetic waxes.

Returning motorcycleto use
