First-class art for GaiaBy Rebecca Jenkins

It’s always a relief to fi nally have your HSC completed and reap the benefi ts of good marks. Seventeen-year-old St Joseph’s Aberdeen art student, Gaia Macolino has taken that one step further by having her HSC ‘Body Of Work’ accepted into the First Class 14 exhibition being shown at the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery to be held from the 6th February to the 1st April 2015.Gaia’s works are controversial to say the least, but have deep meaning and creativity which is very clear to see. “My artwork shows the fl aws within our modern society of a world mainly led by men.” explains Gaia. “I have mocked extreme case relevant from the past 500 years by depicting them as characters of innocence drawn from diverse Disney tales. These are linked through their country of origin i.e. Snow White/Germany/Hitler.”

Gaia also explains how these works are close to her heart and are fi lled with personal relevance. “The project has also drawn strong personal links as I have depicted Mussolini, an Italian dictator, as he was a direct cause for my grandfather’s death and such a negative point in Italian history.”

Gaia’s work was selected out of a possible 120 candidates to be a part of the exhibition. Curators Ann Caddey and Belinda Howden recognise the commitment and talents of all involved with all of the artwork marked in the HSC. Gaia being accepted into the fi nal round is a great feat and is truly a show of talent and creativity for the local Denman girl.

Summertime Race Day – post Christmas traditionScone Race Club is looking forward to their traditional Summertime Race Day next weekend, Saturday 27 December. This meeting is always a great gathering place for friends and family over the Christmas period.CEO Miss Sarah Wills said, “We have lots of fun activities for the children including Sparkles the Clown, a face painter, the Big Pink Funhouse covered-slide, a jellybean guessing competition and snow cones.”

Miss Wills further said, “There are seven TAB races and as there is no provincial meeting scheduled for that day we are well-supported by locals as well as the provincial trainers and the racing will be terrific.”

Things to do over the school holidays By Zack Phillips

It is nearly that time of year again when parents start to wonder how to keep the kids entertained. That’s right - the Christmas school holidays are just around the corner, so why don’t you take them to one of the many fun events targeted at kids of all-ages during the school holidays? The Muswellbrook Cinema is opening this month on Boxing Day! Why not take your family to a movie and enjoy this fantastic new addition of entertainment in our community? Some of the family movies that will be screened include The Penguins of Madagascar, Big Hero 6 and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

The recently-renovated Highbrook Park in Muswellbrook is a great place to spend a day out with your family. The giant lizard slide aka Larry the Lizard is always a hit along with the luxury of all the playground equipment; Highbrook Park is a great place to go and have a picnic under the trees. There is also a bike track that your children will enjoy.

The swimming pools will be open in Scone, Denman and Muswellbrook all throughout the holidays which will be a great way to cool off with some friends throughout this hot summer. As well as a cool dip, you can also head to all of the towns’ libraries and enjoy their many-scheduled activities plus much more.

Lots to do over the school holiday break – whether it is becoming involved in an activity, simply having fun in the backyard, or washing the family car – enjoy a safe and happy festive season.

Back to the 50’s with the All StarsFor the team at Overton House the annual All Stars concert production has got to be one of the highlights of the year. Chic Taylor is a name well-known around the local area as the woman in charge of the great work carried out by Overton House. As team leader, Chic is in charge of a variety of programs in support of the unsung heroes among us; those who live with a disability on a daily basis. From ‘Day Programs’ where clients learn all about life skills, community involvement and more, to peer support and carers respite and children’s recreation and leisure programs.

“It’s an opportunity for our guys to be involved in, or do things that they may never get the opportunity or chance to be involved in or do. It’s all about inclusion,” says Chic. “The best part for me is seeing smiles on faces when achievements are accomplished.”

Chic first came to Overton in 2005 as a disability support professional before taking over as team leader in 2007, but has been in the industry for going-on 17 years. The only regret, Chic says, is that she didn’t get involved in the industry sooner.

Each year Overton runs the All Stars concert in conjunction with the students of St Joseph’s High School in Aberdeen. Run over a week in January, the rehearsals and workshops culminate into a concert to which everyone is invited to attend.

Back to the 50’s with the All StarsContinued from page 4“The love of music, dance and drama was how All Stars come about,” says Chic. “Our first ever workshop brought Nida from Sydney who were employed to run the workshop which was held at Muswellbrook RSL Club. The following year we thought it would be great if we could involve some school students to volunteer with our week and also have a larger area to run the workshop, hence the meetings started with Mr John Tobin, principal of St Joseph’s who embraced the idea and we had twenty students involved. The following years to come the student numbers climbed and today over one hundred students are involved - not only volunteering but now running the workshop.

This year’s theme for the event is Back to the 50’s. The pinnacle of the event – the concert – is open to family, friends and the wider community to come along and support all the guys involved as they showcase their new talents. The concert begins at 5pm on Saturday 17 January 2015, at St Joseph’s High School, Aberdeen in the auditorium. Music, dance, drama and fun will be on display for a gold coin donation which goes straight into the funding for the following year’s production. The concert is also recorded as a memento for those involved - giving everlasting memories and smiles all round.

“It’s just such a rewarding week, with lots of fun and laughter,” Chic says. “There are no inhibitions or expectations, it’s a ‘get in and have a go’ attitude with fun attached of course. The partnership with St Joseph’s is truly amazing and means so much to the guys and the students who are involved. The students don’t just cut off after the All Stars week; the friendships remain and that in itself means the world.”

A royal welcomeThe Royal Hotel is a fantastic establishment located in Muswellbrook which regularly hosts amazing performers and artists on its entertainment stage. Recently, they’ve had a new addition to their amazing line-up, but it’s not by way of entertainment. The Willows Restaurant not long ago made a new home with the Royal and according to chef and owner Mark, things have never been better!

Since moving, award-winning chef, Mark Hawkins has noted that the restaurant itself hasn’t changed, more just the location. It’s still serves beautiful à la carte bistro food and still has its fantastically well-priced specials and wonderful service. Some new additions include a new function area (suitable for at least 30 people), an all-menu take away service and bar snacks that rival the main menu itself! Everything on the menu is prepared fresh; everything is of a high standard.

Mark and his wife, Virginia met whilst working in a restaurant and have continued to work in restaurants since. Even their son, Brad, is now a part of the mix and a very talented one at that. Originally a mechanic, Brad began his chef’s apprenticeship and has even been ‘fast tracked’ forward into his education due to his talent. Looking at his talented parents, anyone can see where he gets it. Mark has won over 44 awards for his culinary skills including coming second in New South Wales for the Hotel and Motel Association Awards.

Apart from the good food, the service is certainly not to be passed over. Everything from a sit-down dinner to functions, the friendly staff as well as the Hawkins family will cater to individual needs. The atmosphere is fantastic, the service friendly and there is ALWAYS something going on. The regular customers that have followed Willows to their new location can attest to that.

When all is said and done, the Hawkins family has set up the perfect business with nothing but positive feedback all around. Now, the restaurant has the environment to match with rural surroundings and famous past acts such as Mental As Anything passing through the hotel where the restaurant is situated, it’s the perfect place for a day or night out. The Royal in conjunction with Willows literally has EVERYTHING covered to make your time out well spent and satisfying. Top five holiday dangers to petsThe Christmas holidays are a wonderful festive treat for all the family including your pet. We all enjoy a busy fun time, but are constantly distracted and can overlook some potential dangers to our furry friends.Be aware of these top five dangers as listed by an international pet insurance company and save yourself and your pet a trip to the veterinary emergency room.

1. Holiday tinsel and ornaments: Tinsel, while not toxic, is very attractive to pets, particularly cats. The shiny, dangling decoration reflects light and sparkles and shakes in the slightest draft — appearing to come alive to watchful critters.

The problem with tinsel is that once it’s eaten, it can cause serious injury to your pet. If not caught in time, ingestion could actually be fatal as it twists and bunches inside your pet’s intestines. Immediate veterinary care is required.

2. Food hazards: Festive events often mean edible treats — and lots of them. Unfortunately, some of the most popular holiday goodies, such as chocolate, roasts and nuts, can be extremely toxic or fatal to pets.

• Chocolate is well known to be poisonous. In general, the darker and richer the chocolate, the higher the risk of toxicity. Call your vet if you think your pet helped itself to the Christmas chocolates.

• Fat trimmings and cooked bones are dangerous for dogs. Fat trimmed from meat, both cooked and uncooked, in even moderate amounts may cause pancreatitis. And, although it seems natural to give a dog a bone,

a dog can choke on it. Bones can also splinter and cause an obstruction or lacerations of your dog’s digestive system.

• Abundant in many Christmas sweet treat, certain nuts should not be given to pets. Almonds, walnuts and pistachios can cause an upset stomach or an obstruction of your dog’s throat and/or intestinal tract. Macadamia nuts and mouldy walnuts can be toxic, causing seizures or neurological signs. Lethargy, vomiting and loss of muscle control are among the effects of nut ingestion.

Keep your pet on her regular diet and caution visitors against giving your pet special treats or table scraps.

3. Gift wrap ribbon: You may be tempted to fashion your pet with a decorative ribbon “collar” but beware that this could become a choking hazard.

Also, it’s best to quickly bin ribbons and bows wrapped around holiday gifts so that your puppy or kitten won’t be enticed to chew or swallow them.

4. Toxic holiday plants: They may be pretty, but some holiday plants are poisonous — even deadly. As little as a single leaf from any lily variety is lethal to cats. Others to avoid:

• Christmas tree pine needles can produce oral irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, trembling and posterior weakness.

• Mistletoe, another Christmas plant, can cause significant vomiting and diarrhoea, difficulty breathing, collapse, erratic behaviour, hallucinations and death when ingested.

• Poinsettias can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach and sometimes vomiting.

5. Holiday lighting and candles: Twinkling, shiny and dangling holiday lights may be another source of danger to your curious pets.

Got a pet that likes to chew? Electrical shock may occur when a pet chomps down on an electrical cord, causing tongue burns and even death. Animals should be kept totally away from outside Christmas lights and wiring.

If you have candles on display, place them in a hard-to-reach spot so that your pets can not access them. Not only can pets seriously burn themselves, but knocking over candles creates a fire hazard and may leave a trail of hot wax that will easily burn the pads of paws and more.

State show riding championshipsScone - the Horse Capital of Australia hosted the prestigious Pony Club NSW State Show Riding Championships on the 6th and 7th December at White Park in Scone. The Championship was hosted by pony clubs located in the local Zone 7 which includes Murrurundi, Wingen, Scone, Denman, Cassilis, Singleton and Merriwa and attracted an impressive 230 competitors.

The equestrian discipline of show riding is an event whereby horse and rider demonstrate their skills on the flat. The horse is judged on conformation, paces and manners, whilst riders are judged on their riding ability.

According to host Zone 7 event organiser Julee Gilmore, in order to prepare for the championship, local Pony Club Zone 7 riders, “enthusiastically practised their show riding skills at individual club rally days, competition days and, of course, at our recent Jamboree. The Jamboree programme mirrored State Show Riding Championship (SSRC) events to give our members the opportunity to practise these events. For the riders who didn’t compete this year at SSRC, this gave them the opportunity to experience showriding, including team events, and for some, gave them the drive to work towards 2015 SSRC.

Upper Hunter Shire Council’s team of young athletes have returned from the International Children’s Games in Lake Macquarie where over the week they achieved personal bests in their sports and made friends with children from around the world.Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Michael Johnsen who attended the first few days of the Games said the young team had an inspiring, fun and educational adventure competing in a large sporting event.

“Seeing the Upper Hunter team doing their best in their sports and being part of such a big event, I was bursting with pride, “ Mayor Johnsen said.

Council’s Sports Participation Officer Nicky Western thanked everyone who had supported the twenty-eight competitors including the volunteer coaches, parents, Council, Zoe Harper for fundraising and the Scone Swimming Club for their donation.

“Parents put in a lot of effort driving backwards and forwards to come and support us as a team,” she said.

“Mayor Michael Johnsen turned up and supported the athletes and made them feel really special.

“The athletes themselves embraced the experience and made lots of friends with athletes from different countries.

“Everyone outdid themselves achieving personal bests.

Just one example of the spirit of the event was the Upper Hunter water polo girls who had never played water polo but the Games were short a team and they dived in, did their best and smiled and congratulated the other team at the end. They were true ambassadors for the Upper Hunter,” Ms Western said.

“None of it would have been possible without the support of Council. It’s a Council team and we wouldn’t have gone if they hadn’t been behind it. The Upper Hunter will now be invited to send teams to future Games in other countries.

About 1500 athletes from 30 countries attended this International Children’s Games held for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere. The International Olympic Committee-sanctioned event is held every year.

Country at The DAG – too big to be missed!

It’s almost that time of year again when Tamworth explodes with the cream of the crop of country music during the 2015 Tamworth Country Music Festival. But it’s not just Tamworth that will be fl ooded with talent during next month – 17th – 26th January 2015. In conjunction with the TCMF, The DAG Sheep Station in Nundle will also be holding its own celebration with over 50 artists appearing over the course of 10 days at what is recognised as one of Australia’s best-listening venues. The line-up appearing at the DAG is nothing short of jaw-dropping with a number of ‘Showcases’ planned that will feature some of the most popular artists today as well as some of the promising talent that participated in the 2013/2014 Songwriters Retreat. The three ‘Showcases’ include the ‘Songwriters Retreat’ featuring the current six-times Golden Guitar nominated Luke O’Shea, Aleyce Simmonds, Karl Broadie and Aly Cook, as well as artists from past retreats; the ‘West Australian Showcase’ bringing together the best of

Western Australian country music such as Connie Kis Andersen, Terry Bennetts, Jonny Taylor and Courtney Conway; and the ‘Alternate Country’ with Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes, Den Hanrahan and the Roadsiders, Karl Broadie and Rod Dowsett.

New to The DAG will be the ‘Acoustic Sessions’ featuring artists and bands raw and stripped back to the acoustic core. Australia’s favourite bush band, The Bushwackers along with a bevy of performers such as The Harmonaters, Women In Docs, The Junes - just to name a few. There are also a number of other artists performing throughout the ten days with Australia’s youngest-ever Toyota Starmaker winner, Kirsty Lee Akers who will feature in a ‘’Festival Special’ show with friends and rising stars, Tash Amoroso from 2014 The Voice and Jemma Nicole.

The big fi nale on Australia Day will truly refl ect the Aussie spirit with bush poets, Jack Drake and Bill Kearns, leading the way with the musical talents of the Mark Atkins Band, Kalesti Butler and Doug McIntyre.

Tickets are expected to sell out fast. If you’re wanting to experience country music in its full glorious splendour, there’s no time or place better than The DAG Sheep Station during January of 2015! For more information or ticket bookings please call 6769 3486 or visit www.thedag.com.au
