ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT DAVID MAMET Born in Chicago in 1947, David Mamet began his theater career by performing bit parts and backstage tasks at the Hull House Theatre and working as a busboy at The Second City. He wrote his first plays while attending Goddard College in Vermont; soon after graduating, Mamet took a job teaching at his alma mater. There, Mamet founded the St. Nicholas Theatre Company with several of his students, including William H. Macy. The group staged the first production of Mamet’s now-famous play Sexual Perversity in Chicago, then relocated from Vermont to Chicago, where they continued to produce Mamet’s plays for several years, to critical acclaim. In 1975, Mamet found even more success with American Buffalo, which debuted at the Goodman before moving to Broadway; in 1984, his play Glengarry Glen Ross won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Around the same time, Mamet embarked on a screenwriting career, which led to such films as “House of Games” and “Wag the Dog”, and the television series “The Unit”. Meanwhile, his playwriting career continued, with such hits as Speed-the-Plow, Oleanna, and Boston Marriage.
