DEFINITION

A turbine is a rotatory mechanical device that extracts energy from a fluid flow and converts it into useful work. A turbine is a turbo machine with at least one part moving part called rotor assembly, which is a shaft or drum with blades attatched.

INTRO OF STEAM TURBINE.

A steam turbine is a device which extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam and uses it to do mechanical work on a rotating output shaft.

It is a good applicant in power.

Page 5: Rachana

ADVANTAGES

It requires less space.

Its over load capacity is very high.

Absence of various links such as piston, piston rodCross head etc…..make the mechanism simple.

DISADVANTAGES

The velocity of rotor is too high for practical purpose.

The velocity of steam leaving the turbine is considerablyHigh and hence there is loss in kinetic enrgy.

These problems can be over come by expanding the steam in Different stages..

This is known as compounding.

CONCLUSION

Technically there is much more to know about its mechanism.

It has advantages but its usage is low acccording statistics.

Turbine is also a main applicant in power generation.
