Radiophonica Write up Track 1- Nightcall-Funky Drummer Samples Track For my First track i wanted to make something more upbeat and edgy so i decided to take inspira- tion from my favourite band London Grammar. I did this by sampling the first few seconds from their hit song “Nightcall”. I ran It through the EXS24 and added some compression, tremolo and an amp designer as well as some other effects to make it sound different to the original then I decided to duplicate the EXS24 instrument so that I had multiple versions of that one sample to work with. After I had arranged the first sample i then decided to sample the drums off of a very well known song called “Funky Drummer” by James Brown. This sample is widely used and it has a history of being taken and used in many tracks. Inspiration to make this track came through a listen of this sample in the song “Heaven” by Emeli Sande. So I sampled the drums and decided to experiment with some delays and reverb to get that big room feel to the track. I then wrote a chord pattern and added build ups were appropriate from the drum sample talked about earlier. I tried to manipulate the samples all the way throughout the track so that it would add variety. Finally I structured the song and began to add EQ and other tools were necessary. For The London Grammar sample i applied Tremolo so at the start it sounds like the sample is moving from the left monitor and back to right continuously also i removed the lowered end of this sample as it wasn't needed and instead i brightened the high end of this track up in the mix later on so that it didn't sound muddy or lost in the mix. This combined with some light compression seemed to do the trick and therefore i began to start using the EXS24 to pitch it up and down in certain parts of the song so that it would add more depth and variation. With The James Brown sample I used Overdrive to give the snare hits more of a hard impact and also to make the drums sound loud and powerful in the track as this was my main sample so i wanted to portray it differently than other times that it has been used. I decided to make the track into a dark cinematic piece so then i began to add a riser to build tension and again the EXS24 was used here. Other plug-ins were used for the drums such as reverb and sample delay, I chose these particular plugins as i was trying to make something different and a bit experimental. I also again took another London Grammar sample and had it play over in mostly the chorus parts of the sons and applied some effects to it such as compression brining the threshold down and the ratio up to make sure it stood out in the track and also auto filter. For the final additions i played in a Pi- ano part in the bridge section of the song and i tided up the track by adding general EQ and com- pression.

Radiophonica Write up!Track 1- Nightcall-Funky Drummer Samples Track !For my First track i wanted to make something more upbeat and edgy so i decided to take inspira-tion from my favourite band London Grammar. !!This sample is widely used and it has a history of being taken and used in many tracks. !!For The London Grammar sample i applied Tremolo so at the start it sounds like the sample is moving from the left monitor and back to right continuously also i removed the lowered end of this sample as it wasn't needed and instead i brightened the high end of this track up in the mix later on so that it didn't sound muddy or lost in the mix. This combined with some light compression seemed to do the trick and therefore i began to start using the EXS24 to pitch it up and down in certain parts of the song so that it would add more depth and variation. !!With The James Brown sample I used Overdrive to give the snare hits more of a hard impact and also to make the drums sound loud and powerful in the track as this was my main sample so i wanted to portray it differently than other times that it has been used. For the final additions i played in a Pi-ano part in the bridge section of the song and i tided up the track by adding general EQ and com-pression.!!

Track 2- Cameo and Lorde Samples Track !After completing the first track I thought that I should vary up the genre and go for something more chilled. So I began to look for a sample, I took along while to find a sample that I wanted but in the end I took a part of Lorde’s song “Ribs” I began to then make variations of the sample that I had so that I could begin to manipulate it in the EXS24. !!Once I had done that I remembered how I used an old drum sample in the last track. It turned out well so I thought I would do it again but this time I used the song “Word Up” by cameo. This worked out extremely well as then I began to edit it and add reverb and stereo delays to get an almost more atmospheric track. Tremolo and the use of the EXS24 really helped me with this track as it added a certain element that it missed when I was just using the Lorde Sample. !!After That I automated the track and used filters to buildup the track. EQ on this track proved to be a bit tricky however as the drums originally overpowered the mix so I had to lessen the lower fre-quencies so that it would make the track less muddy and more clear. This track turned out excep-tionally well as i managed two combine 2 totally different genres of music and blend the together to make something of a completely diverse. !!The origins of 80’s Rock and funk combined with modern day Alternative music to create some-thing almost psychedelic. I managed to isolate the beat from the cameo track by using the EQ to lowering the unwanted frequencies of the track then i matched it with the tempo and began adding multiple effects to start to manipulate the sound. This is a similar technique that I used in the Lorde side of the track as i managed to loop the synth and then cut out some frequencies to make the mix less muddy then i used the EXS24 to pitch it up a few octaves and then i used multiple in-stances of the plugin to change the octaves so that it would give the track more variation and with additions such as Tremolo and reverb it started to form an interesting blend. I used a vocal from ribs to brighten up the track and i again used the EXS24 to pitch the vocals higher so they fitted in with the psychedelic vibe of the track. The use of Overdrive and the various guitar amp plugins were also used.!!

!!!!!!!Track 3- Massive Attack, London Grammar and Martin Luther King !For My last piece I wanted to make something a little more experimental and different. I had an idea to take vocals or a speech and use it in one of my tracks. So I Decided to use Martin Luther Kings “I have a Dream” speech and I worked around that. I Then researched into a sample that would fit to the speech. I eventually used a short sample from London Grammar’s song “Wasting my young years”. I then began to change it with the EXS24 and swell as edit it so that it looped and went with the the speech. After that I tried to make a drum beat that would somewhat fit how-ever i had a bit of a struggle finding one that would fit the overall feel of the song. So I did a bit of research and came up with a solution. I sampled the drums from Massive Attacks’ “Teardrop” and automated them with filters so that they would fit into the mix. I then began to add effects such as Reverb to the speech to make it sound much more open.!!The EXS24 was the main component in this and all of my sample tracks as I was limited to only 2 other midi tracks in this project so this meant we either had to use audio files from our sampled songs or use the EXS24 to manipulate samples to make the into an actual software instrument to begin creating melodies and even chord profession. Sampling with this plug-in is a very useful mu-sical tool as it allows you to do things that you wouldn't be able to do easily without Logic, I used the EXS24 in all of my different songs so this is a demonstration of how powerful it is. They way i used this plugin was loading pre edited clips and importing them in. This made making sample tracks easier as it gave me more creative tools i could use all the normal EXS24 controls such as cutoff resonance etc as well as all the default Logic effects units. As you can see in the picture to the left this is what an imported sound looks like in the plug-in. The way you do this isn't too com-plicated and only takes a few easy steps which are: !1. Open a new empty project !2. Creating A Software instrument
