One of my most revered heroes is Chuck Yeager, the first man to pilot an aircraft ‘through the sound barrier’. He did it in 1947 in a rocket-powered plane called the Bell X-1 If you saw the movie The Right Stuff, then you’ll know what a white-knuckle event this was. That is, everyone else’s knuckles were white. Chuck, by contrast, was Captain Cool. WE ARE HERE

What’s Gibber?Gibber is a proven natural growth promoter that boosts pasture growth, especially in early spring and late autumn. The boost can be up to 60% additional dry matter production.Pasture sward is denser, with less bare spots and much better pugging resistance.

How fast does it work?Extra growth becomes evident about 7 days after application (leave a small area untreated to see for yourself the remarkable difference). The boost effect on pasture growth then increases until its maximum effect about 21 days after application.

Is Gibber just for rotational grazing systems? No, although it does suit them because of its 3 weeks’ effective growth-boost cycle. But useful additional pasture growth can be achieved under any grazing system, and customers using less intensive grazing have still achieved very pleasing and costeffective results. The

ideal, however, is to apply Gibber within 2 days of fairly hard grazing.

What’s the ideal soil temperature range?Between 6°C and 18°C. And the maximum difference between treated and untreated pasture occurs when soil temp (and thus ‘normal’ growth rate) is at its lowest, i.e. just when you need it the most!

How often can you apply Gibber? In trials there was no discernible loss of growth response after three or four consecutive rotation applications.

What’s the ideal application method?Boom spray or rosette spray works best. Around 100L of water per hectare will allow uniform spray coverage.

Credence for Dairy

Come along and talk to Dr. Lucy Waldron who can answer all your technical and general questions about the use and efficacy of Credence 1000 as a farm sanitiser especially in relation to calf rearing, dairy shed hygiene and trough and dam water quality.

Increased concerns and standards placed on human food makes it essential that no potentially harmful pathogens are spread into milk from the herd.

Dairy producers need to make sure their milk is clean and free of harmful bacteria and toxins. Herd performance is based on the health and fertility of the cows, and their exposure to potentially harmful pathogenic bacteria. The increased concerns and standards placed on human food makes it essential that no potentially harmful pathogens or their toxins are spread into the milk from the herd – which can have a drastic effect on profitability of the farm.

In the dairy shed, several aspects including hygiene in the building must be considered. In addition, the cleanliness of the udder is a key part of controlling contamination in milk. Credence can be used as an udder cleaner, and has been shown to be active on the udder for at least 6 hours.

In calves, a trial was run on the contamination of teats from milk feeder bottle. Credence was applied as a spray to the teats at a concentration of 1500 mg/l for 5 seconds. The teats were swabbed 30 seconds after treatment for colonising bacteria, and compared to rinsing in water alone or no cleaning. A huge reduction in contamination was seen for the Credence treated teats, down to virtually zero. As calves are commonly infected by pathogens from contaminated feeding equipment, especially teats which are hard to clean effectively, this represents a major reduction in risk for young animals. In addition, no multiple rinsing is required, as Credence is safe in suitable dilution for drinking water.

Special guest at Fieldays – Dr Lucy Waldron - on our stand (PE7) from 12-2pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Darn it - 2,4-D price increasesWe always hate bringing bad news but unfortunately our price for 2, 4-D granules has increased. There are a number of reasons for this including some of the Chinese environmental initiatives being implements (more info on China and the Environment in later newsletter), raw material price increases and shortages. The new prices are $160+GST/10kg ($184.00 including GST) delivered. On the positive side we still believe our prices will be competitive but we may not be saving you as much as before. Plus you get the added benefit over the liquid ester form of 2,4-D in that it doesn’t smell as much.We are working on some options so this might only be a temporary situation,so watch this space.

Winter close-down datesNormally at this time of the year we close up shop for a few weeks and we let the staff have a well-earned break as they jet off into the sunshine in some exotic location.

This year we are going to be on a bit of a skeleton staff over the traditional closedown period so won’t be totally closed. You might need to leave any orders on the answerphone or email these and it might take a few days longer than normal to get your orders out the door but we think it is better than closing down totally.

We will slow-down at 4:00pm on Friday 6th July, and speed up again at 9:00am on Monday 30th July.

So ideally make sure that you order anything you’ll need by not later than 5th July. That’ll ensure we get your order away before the Friday, when the factory staff will all be very busy packing their buckets and spades.

Otherwise, if urgent, give us a call as we will try and do a couple of order packing runs during the slow-down period.

Did you know?• Everyone knows Velcro and has probably used Velcro but did you know that the inventor of Velcro, Swiss Engineer George de Mestral, gained his inspiration from a weed? Yep he was out walking his dog and noticed how the burs from the common burdock (Arctium minus) stuck to his woollen pants and his dog’s fur. The rest, as they say, is history.

• A weed, specifically Scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium), is said to have helped win a battle. Norsemen intended to come ashore quietly and planned a surprise attack on the sleeping Scots army. Thinking they would be quieter they removed their boots but a prickly patch of thistle between the attacking Norsemen and the sleeping Scots is said to have saved the day and hence a weed is now the Scottish National Flower, shared selflessly around the world….thanks for that!!!

There are two reasons for that. • First is that this normally biennial plant has the

ability to morph into a very hard to kill multi-crown perennial if it’s been mowed, slashed or ineffectually sprayed. And each mature plant can produce 200,000 or more seeds. Seeds that remain viable for 10 years.

• The second reason ragwort is a punishing opponent in that if you don’t deal with it before flowering, it no longer responds as well to the effects of herbicides, thus becoming even more difficult to kill.

So the right approach is to be ready early with a planned seasonal control programme, and to execute each step on time and thoroughly.

There are three stages in an effective ragwort control plan:A. Autumn. Spot treatment of all erect and

multi-crown ragwort plants. Use GrassMate or MSF600 for spot spraying, and BuckShot for dry spot treatment.

B. Winter. Boom spraying of seedling and rosette stage ragwort plants. Use our new 2,4-D Granules at 2kg/Ha, or at 3kg/Ha if the rosettes are looking unusually large and vigorous.

C. Spring. Spot treatment of any surviving plants before flowering. Use GrassMate or MSF600 again for spot spraying, and BuckShot for dry spot treatment.

Neglecting any one of the three steps will have very unpleasant consequences:• Slack autumn spot treatment will mean that

many plants too large for control by the winter rosette spraying will still be present.

• Missing the winter boom spraying will mean that all those rosettes will become much harder-to-kill erect plants with active seed heads.

• And failing to tidy up any survivors in early spring will add enormously to the seed bank, as well as producing a new generation of multi-crown perennials.

So work out a plan and put it in your diary or on the wall so you don’t forget!!!

The of Ragwort ControlRagwort is not a weed that lets you get away with a spur-of-the-moment approach.

Q&A from customersBears’ BreechesQ: Up here in the north Acanthus mollis can become a pest. What would you recommend for controlling this?A: Acanthis mollis. You probably know it is also called Bears’ Britches or Oyster plant. Pesky but it is not too hard to knock off. Several methods. If you wanted to cut and swab then a paste of MSF600 1-2mm thick on the cut stump is the recommended method. Also you could stump swab with Triclo• MSF600 at the Gorse or broom rates of 5g/10l

with 10g/10 litres of Superwetter penetrant – slow acting though and you won’t see results for some time. Maybe several months. This is the cheapest way to control but it will kill ryegrass and clover as well.

• Triclo – knapsack at 6ml/litre + Superwetter 10ml/10l. This is grass and clover friendly. This will be faster also. At these high rates the clover will get suppressed but it should come back.

• Grassmate – if you had Grassmate kicking around rather than Triclo this would work also as the Triclopyr part of Grassmate would knock it off but the Picloram part of Grassmate is ineffective against Acanthus mollis and also it will knock off any clover so if you wanted to protect clover you are probably better off using Triclo.

VervainQ: As background, we live on a lifestyle block which has a total of approximately one and a half hectares of paddocks.About eight/nine months ago a strong woody weed [see pictures] suddenly invaded areas of our paddocks. Very invasive in areas. Over these months, we have tried three separate

branded broadleaf weed sprays, with some effect but by no means removing the weeds. Some have died but others have not and some have started to regenerate. The effect was to inhibit or kill grass growth. When pulled out of the ground the root system is strong and penetrates the ground by about 70 mm.We have observed that this weed only is on our small paddocks. Adjacent fenced neighboring paddocks and our lawn show no signs of infestation. Because the previous owners had not looked after the paddocks we did drill seed the paddocks eighteen months ago with good results. Have we disturbed dormant weeds? Exploring another possibility, the Waikato as with other areas suffered the wettest October/November on record causing huge paddock damage. Trees and hedges died standing in water. Did this have an effect? Can you investigate the weed and what is the best treatment back to healthy paddocks?A: This is Vervain or verbena. Scientific name Verbena officinalis. Sometimes known as Stagger grass, Pigeon grass or Pigeon weed.Tricky beast to control and best to control it when young. Mechanical control by mowing before the seed heads are present can reduce its population going forward by up to 75%. Once it gets bigger it is a bit harder. There is nothing I can find as an “on-label” recommendation for use in pasture as it seems to be much more common in crops and the normal chemical for control of this in crops is Pendimethalin which is not a herbicide we currently stock. There is a bit of off-label information around and Glyphosate has been named as being effective but will kill grass and clover. 2, 4-D also has been shown to be effective on the smaller plants. Even Paraquat has been mentioned. I would be inclined to give it a hit with 2, 4-D and see how you go but do test out a small area first to make sure you are happy with the efficacy and the effect on your pasture and clover. If you are not too worried about some collateral damage then just use Glyphosate and see how you go. Again, these are off-label suggestions based on others’ experience so are not tested specifically on this weed and are not a specific recommendation by Rainbow & Brown.

PHYSICAL CONTROL

The only practical non-herbicide control treatment is grazing by sheep.

HERBICIDE CONTROL

Boom Spraying:

Both MCPA and MCPB are largely ineffective. 2,4-D boom spraying is reported to give some control, but the plants often recover and regrow. The preferred time to boom spray oxeye daisy is in the spring, when the plants are actively growing. However, spraying with Ranger (see below) has been reported by many farmers to produce good results through to the end of summer.

• Cobber herbicide sprayed alone at 1L/Ha,

or added to 2,4-D at 100-200ml of Cobber per hectare, will control oxeye daisy, but will result in some clover damage.

• GrassMate sprayed at 2L/Ha is effective and grass-friendly,but will also result in some clover damage.

• Ranger herbicide, when sprayed at 20g/ Ha in the spring to control docks and buttercups, is reported to have the added benefi t of also controlling oxeye daisy, though there may be some regrowth. Spraying with Ranger can be also done through to late summer. Die-off for most target weeds will be slower than spring, and a follow-up treatment may be required.

• Decision sprayed at 65g/Ha will suppress oxeye daisy at seedling stage.

Spot Spraying:

There are several effective products for spot spraying, although all will do some clover damage, and one (MSF600) will also damage grass.

• Cobber herbicide spot sprayed at 100ml/100L using a high volume gun, or at 25ml/10L in a knapsack.

• GrassMate spot sprayed at 6ml/L with a knapsack but giving coverage of 30m2/L

• MSF600 spot sprayed at 5g/100L using a handgun, or 1g/10L in a knapsack.

Wetter/Penetrant:

When spraying by boom or hand, the addition of 100ml SprayWetter penetrant will maximise herbicide performance, especially when growing conditions are not ideal.

Weed Wiping:

Where terrain allows, and the oxeye plants are in their erect stage, weed wiping is an excellent solution to the problem of avoiding clover damage

• Glyphosate applied in a weed wiper at 1 part glyphosate to 2 parts water.

• MSF600 applied in a weed wiper at 2-3g/L of water.

• As always read the product label and follow those instructions

DESCRIPTION

Oxeye daisy - Leucanthemum vulgare

Oxeye daisy is a perennial weed common in waste areas and roadsides, but also often found in poorer or wetter dairy pastures. It’s not generally a problem in sheep pastures because sheep will readily eat it.

It’s a diffi cult plant to control where no sheep are present, because it is not very susceptible to selective herbicides commonly used in pastures, such as MCPA and 2,4-D.

Oxeye daisy has conspicuous white fl owers, up to 6cm in diameter with bright yellow centres. The plant is a rosette at the base, but grows quite tall (much taller than the regular daisy) during the main fl owering period from August to May, when the fl owers appear at the end of clumps of long upright leafy stems.

The leaves are dark green, nearly hairless, and are deeply lobed. The rosette leaves at the base of the fl owering stems are up to 12cm long by 2cm wide and appear on stalks, while the leaves on the fl owering stems are smaller, narrower and have no stalks. The root system consists of short rhizomes, which contributes to the diffi culty of control.

As well as the smaller common daisy, the oxeye daisy can be confused with stinking mayweed and scentless chamomile due to the similar fl owers, but both of these species have distinctly different, very fi nely divided leafl ets.

The library of Rainbow & Brown Weed Files now covers over 70 common problem weeds. You can read or download all of these Weed Files at our website. Click the “Weed Files” tab

at the top of any page for the alphabetical list of titles.

• Rainbow & BrownRainbow & Brown Ltd is a privately-owned NZ company. Our factory and office is in Rotorua. We’re now in our 17th year of operation, and have been growing strongly every year. We have customers all over New Zealand, including farmers, horticulturalists, spray contractors, nurseries, commercial and private gardeners, and many other businesses. Our products are sold direct, which is why our prices are so attractive … it is effectively the “wholesale” price, direct from the manufacturer.

• PeopleThe directors of Rainbow & Brown have been involved in the NZ agricultural chemicals business for over 20 years. They’re actively involved in the day-to-day running and building of the business. If you phone us, your most likely contact will be Rachael, our office manager (and the real heart of the company!). If you call in to see us, you’ll also meet Clinton, the factory manager.

• OrderingYou can order anytime by phone, online at rainbowbrown.co.nz, or by fax, e-mail or by letter. If you call on the freephone number, you may at times get an answering machine. That means we’re already on the phone, or doing something else. Or it may be after office hours (see below). Please just leave your name and number, and we’ll soon call you back. Or if we’ve already got all your details, just leave your order (with your name and phone number) on the machine.

• DeliveryWe send your order within 24 hours. Delivery will usually take between 1 and 4 days. If it hasn’t arrived after that time, call us immediately so we can track it down for you. Delivery of orders of 60 litres or less will normally be to your door, including rural delivery addresses. However, delivery of larger orders may be to the nearby freight depot or drop-off point we will arrange with you when you place your order.

• Factory & Office HoursIf you want to collect your order from our Rotorua factory, you’re welcome. It’s at 68A Tallyho Street. Open hours are 8.30 to 4.30, Monday to Friday.

• PaymentWe’ll send your invoice with the product, or email it if you prefer. Payment is due on 20th following month, and you can send a cheque or use direct payment to a/c No: 123155-0066374-00. The bank account number is also on both your invoice and your statement. We send statements out in the first week of each month.

• Referral RewardsWord-of-mouth is the best advertising, so if you recommend us to someone who then becomes a new Rainbow & Brown customer and mentions your name, we’ll thank you with a $10 discount off each different product in your next order. So if you order four different items, you now get a $40 discount (previously $10).SMALL PRINT: The discount doesn’t apply to products on special.

• WebsiteCheck out our website for full details and labels of all our products, plus Safety Data Sheets, and a small library of useful reference articles. You can also download from the free Weed Files library. It’s at www.rainbowbrown.co.nz

• Approved Handler Certificates (EPA)You do NOT need an Approved Handler certificate to purchase any current Rainbow & Brown product except for Cobber herbicide. To apply MSF600, GrassMate, MCPA, Ranger or Triclo in a “wide dispersive manner” (i.e. by boom spray), or apply it commercially (i.e. you’re a contractor), or over water (i.e. you’re a dickhead), you DO need an Approved Handler certificate to apply it, but you DO NOT need a certificate to buy it. You need an Approved Handler certificate to buy Cobber herbicide or to apply it in any circumstances.
