Ancient India was the topic of the sixth-grade projects shown above, and they did an outstanding job! Listed with name and project from left are: Elizabeth Roosa - model of the Taj Mahal; Nathan Beaver - Prayer Wheel; Jamie Green - Native Indian clothing called a “Sari”; Kyle Brown - Indian Floral Garland; Hunter Lienhart - Indian artifacts; Taylor Satalino and Brayley Rodunardt - Indian temple called a “Stupa.”

RCS will mark its 75th anniversary and Gail N. Chapman its 50th this year in a spe-cial way. A celebration is being planned by the Character Counts Committee, in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Randolph Area Homecoming Picnic, on Sunday, May 27. The picnic will be held on RCS grounds with the same FREE food, kids’ and family games, and a few surprises.

Mark your calendar to plan on celebrat-ing with us this Memorial Day Weekend. If anyone would like to help with planning or volunteer at the event, please e-mail [email protected] or call Tonia McAllister at 716-358-5923.

Mrs. Arnold’s, Mrs. Congdon’s, and Mrs. Manno’s fi rst grade student combine forces to create a weekly “Theme Focus Wall” in the commons area outside their classrooms. Kane Carlson is pictured at left at one of the walls. This project coordinates with the current stories being read in the Houghton Miffl in reading series. Expanding upon a theme concept helps to build comprehension and higher level thinking strategies.

It’s an honor to be at this breakfast

Randolph Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind team fared well at the regional competition March 10 in Wellsville. The team won fi rst place in the Long-Term Problem, and fourth in Spontaneous. Overall, Randolph Middle School’s team tied for fi rst place for their problem and division to qualify for the state competi-tion March 31 in Binghamton.

This year, “Around the World in Eight Minutes” was the title of the Long-Term Problem. The team created a skit that included a traveler who visits three loca-tions: one polar, one different, and one team-created, undiscovered location on Earth. The skit could only last eight minutes. They had a budget of $125 for all props and costumes. The team decided to visit the Great Barrier Reef, the North Pole, and created an undiscovered island

Members of the winning middle school team are (l-r) Cody Austin, Zec Kehoe, Ian Meyer, Adam Ditcher, Holden Snyder, Liam McDonald and Josie Milks.

in the Bermuda Triangle called “Greedy Godfrey’s Travel Resort on Cheapskate Island,” where money grows on trees!

In addition to solving the Long-Term Problem, the team must also prepare for a Spontaneous Problem, where they enter a room and solve a problem they have never seen before. The problems can be verbal, hands-on/verbal, or hands-on. Only fi ve team members can actually participate.

Odyssey of the Mind has been in exis-tence in the area for more than 25 years, fostering creative thinking, problem-solv-ing skills and teamwork.

The students had to write a creative story with an illustration to be considered for this year’s team. Team members were selected based on their creativity, artistic ability, leadership skills, and teamwork potential.

and their dates. The event will be held at the RCS High School, after the prom, from midnight until 6 a.m. (Sunday, May 13). New this year, the students will be served breakfast before they leave. This year’s theme is the 1950s. We will provide many entertaining activities such as Sumo Wrestling, Gladiator Jousting, casino games and karaoke. The public is invited to the Pre-Prom photo opportunity to see and take picture of the students before they go to the Prom, in the auditorium from 5-6 p.m., May 12.

Seniors in the Natural Resources class at BOCES Career and Technical Center at Ellicottville are building a 10 x 12 foot replica log cabin. The cabin is being built to help the Town of Concord commemorate its 200 year anniversary and its founding father, Christopher Stone. The specifi cations for the cabin are provided by documents from the Concord Historical Society. BOCES principal, John Baronich, demonstrated original construction techniques using antique axes and saws from his collection. The cabin will be moved to the original sight which is near the intersection of Franklin and Buffalo Street in Springville. The cabin will be on display from May 2007 for one year before being returned to Eliicottville Center. RCS students working on the project are Doug Edgar (above) and Jared Stacey (below).

On Saturday, March 10, area girls in grades 4-7 participated in the Get in the Game program at Jamestown Community College. These girls learned about a variety of sports through interactive, fun, hands-on stations such as yoga, kayaking, rugby, hockey, bas-ketball, dance, track and much, much more.

Get in the Game is a collaborative effort between local organizations that highlights female athletes and raises awareness about the connection between positive self-esteem and sports, encourages girls participation in sports and promotes equality for partner-ships supporting girls and women in sports.

‘Get in the Game,’ girls!
