HIGH POTENTIAL & GIFTEDEDUCATION PROGRAM

AT RBHS CONTINUESTO GROW

From the Principal

Dear parents and guardians,

It was our pleasure to welcome students back to face-to-face teach-ing on Monday 25th May.

Students have thoroughly enjoyed transitioning to face-to-face lessons once more, spending time with friends at recess and lunch and, although they may not freely admit it, catching up with teachers as well. It is great to see and feel the energy the students bring to the classrooms, corridors and playground.

We still have restrictions in place regarding sport, PDHPE, SLR, Band, excursions, parent/teacher evenings, P & C meetings, home-work centre and other activities in our school. These restrictions are implemented in line with advice from the Department of Education and Health. Once these restrictions are addressed or eased, we will inform you.

In the meantime, the measures outlined below, will continue.

We are insisting that all students:

ALL students using the hand sanitiser on the way in to every class. These sanitisers have been issued to all staff

All students washing their hands at the beginning and end of recess and the beginning and end of lunch.

Wiping/washing any shared equipment (TAS classrooms, Science experiments, modified activities in PDHPE and SLR). We have been provided numerous packets of wipes for this purpose.

Additional cleaning is taking place at the school, especially high use areas (doorhandles, railings etc)

Students will be reminded to walk on the left in corridors and eliminate handshakes, high fives etc.

Using common sense regarding bus travel and distancing etc. There is information regarding school bus travel in this newsletter.

Sport on a Wednesday afternoon will also be modified.

Until further notice, ALL year 11 and 12 students will be dismissed following Period 4 on Wednesday afternoons. This means at 12.05pm, each Wednesday, Year 11 and 12 will be instructed to return home and follow their personal physical activity program. If you do not want your Year 11 or 12 son leaving at 12.05 on a Wednesday afternoon, please notify the front office and an alternative will be arranged.

Years 7 – 10 will remain at school on Wednesday afternoons and will participate in modified, non-contact sports. The resumption of unrestricted sport and physical activity is in line AHPPC guidelines and NSW Health advice.

Safety and hygiene at sport

The following hygiene measures will continue to apply to all sport and physical activities in schools regardless of the phase, including once full sporting participation returns:

• Practise good hygiene.

Staff and students are required to wash their hands prior to and at the conclusion of sport and physical activities. Encourage hand hygiene practices at regular intervals as required.

o Maintain respiratory hygiene whilst participating in sport and physical activity, encouraging coughs or sneezes to be covered and tissues to be disposed of immediately. Always wash your hands after having coughed, sneezed or blown your nose.

o Discourage spitting or clearing of nasal or respiratory secretions at all times. No shining of a cricket ball with sweat/saliva.

• Do not train if unwell.

Students are expected to stay away from school or be collected by a parent/carer should they become unwell during the day. Students should not be participating in sport if they are unwell.

• Do not share items such as drink bottles or towels.

Students should provide their own personal items such as water bottles, towels, clothing, mouthguards, etc as required for competi-tive sporting activities.

• Implement cleaning protocols.

All sport and physical activity equipment must be cleaned at the end of each session. Equipment that cannot be cleaned after each

use should not be shared.

• Environment cleaning.

Standard daily cleans as well as the cleaning of high touch areas should occur within sporting facilities, such as change rooms.

As students return to full time face-to-face learning, sport and physical activity programs will initially focus on non-contact sports. Students can participate in small group sport and physical activities however staff are to continue to maintain physical distance when supervising students during these programs.

Indoor and outdoor non-contact skills training and games are permitted (Rugby and Soccer).

Sharing of sporting and physical activity equipment (except fit-ness equipment and weights) is permitted and should follow safe health practice guidelines including cleaning of equipment at the end of the session.

Competitive contact sport or physical activity is restricted:

• Inter-school sport competitions such as zone sport, state wide competitions and knockouts, gala days or inter-school carnivals are not permitted.

• School carnivals such as athletics, cross country and swimming carnivals are not permitted.

• Full contact and semi-contact sports are not permitted, this includes Rugby, Soccer, Basketball and Netball.

• Skills-based drills and challenges, fitness activities and modified small-sided activities can be utilised as an option.

In terms of half-yearly reporting - Year 11 and 12 Half-Yearly reports will be issued as normal.

Year 7 – 10 will receive a modified school report. The report will not include a mark or rank. It will focus on the learning that has taken place so far this year, which includes individual student’s prog-ress and achievement of the learning provided both at school and at home. Please note this is for Semester One only. Semester Two reports will include marks and ranks for coursework completed throughout the year.

Finally, I am very pleased to report that the proposed upgrade to our school has progressed. We have hosted two further inspec-tions of our site recently and established a Project Reference Group (PRG) to provide the project team with recommendations regarding the upgrade. We will keep the school and community informed of progress in relation to our upgrade.

Early Leavers from School

From time to time, students are required by their parents to leave school early. On all occasions, we require written authorisation from parents to be able to approve this. This is especially impor- tant on sport afternoons (Wednesdays) when large num- bers of students are off site at different venues.

Students should bring their parental letters to the Deputy to get signed. Letters are then taken to the rolls office where the early leave is logged on our system.

Administration

Student feeling unwell while at school

If your son/ward becomes unwell at school, he needs to:

1. Ask teacher for a note to go to the office.

2. After reporting to the office he will be sent to the Deputy Principal.

3. The Deputy Principal will decide if the parent/carer needs to be called.

This ensures your son/ward’s attendance will be correctly marked for the rest of the day.

Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination

Thursday 18th June 2020 Dear Parent/Caregivers,

The NSW Health and NSW Dept. of Education offers all Year 10 students one dose of the Meningococcal ACWY vaccination.

The Meningococcal ACWY vaccine protects against the four strains of meningococcal disease.

A Parent Information pack and Consent Form was distributed to Year 10 students on Tuesday 19th May. The information pack includes an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement. To consent to the vaccination of your child, parents/caregivers are advised to:

Read all of the information provided. Complete the consent form. Return the completed consent form to the school by Friday 12th June. Ensure that your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccinations clinic.

Parents/caregivers who wish to withdraw their consent may do so by writing to the school Principal. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical card. The Record of Vaccination will be provided by NSW Health, not the school. Parents/caregivers should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and provide a copy to your local doctor. If your child is absent for the clinic on Thursday 18th June, they should have another opportunity during term 4 2020 to receive the vaccination, depending upon COVID-19 restrictions at the time. On Thursday, 18th June, the South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit, will be at Randwick Boys’ High School providing the Meningococcal vaccination for Year 10 students.

If you would like your son to participate in the NSW Adolescent Vaccination Program, read through the Parent Information Kit and complete the consent form. Your son will need to return the consent form to the front office by Friday 12th June.

If you have any questions regarding the vaccinations, please contact school reception on 9399 3122. Alternatively, you can phone South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit, Sydney Office on 9382 8333.

Extended Construction Hours - COVID-19 May2020

Changes to construction hours and additional precautionary measures in response to COVID-19 The safety of our people and communities in which we work is our number one priority.

The Randwick Campus Redevelopment continues to implement precautionary workplace measures in accordance with the latest NSW Health advice to minimise the risk of exposure and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As part of these precautionary measures, Health Infrastructure is working with our contractor, Lendlease Building, to introduce extended construction hours on the Randwick Campus Redevelopment to assist managing worker safety on-site. This approach is facilitated by a NSW Government Planning Order that enables modifications to health facility projects in managing construction hours, noise and traffic during this pandemic.

From early June 2020, the following construction hours will be implemented at the Randwick Campus Redevelopment project site:

• Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 10:00pm • Saturdays, 7:00am to 5:00pm

Extended hours for the Randwick Campus Redevelopment are a temporary measure to ensure worker safety and maintain progress on the construction of essential health facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. These extended construction hours will allow the project to continue as scheduled, while continuing to implement COVID-19 best practice hygiene and social distancing requirements as the site workforce grows. As circumstances evolve, the construction program will continue to be evaluated and adapted as per direction of the NSW Government.

While the NSW Government Planning Order enables modifications to construction hours, noise and traffic management, all other aspects of the existing planning approvals remain in effect. We understand this is already a difficult time for the community and we will continue to make every effort to carefully plan and carry out construction activities to minimise disruption where possible.

Any work occurring outside these new construction hours will be notified in advance.

Extended Construction Hours - COVID-19 May2020

Frequently asked Questions Why are these new construction hours introduced?

Health Infrastructure has implemented precautionary workplace measures and issued advice to our workforce and contractors in accordance with the latest NSW Health advice to minimise the risk of exposure and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Keeping our projects going is essential to deliver much-needed health facilities for NSW communities and support the NSW economy, construction industry and thousands of people employed across our sites during this challenging time.

How were the new construction hours approved?

The Minister for Planning and Public Spaces has issued Planning Orders allowing for extended construction working hours across NSW construction projects on an interim basis, enabling flexibility for contractors to address their work, health and safety obligations on worksites during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health Infrastructure workplaces and project sites continue to operate in accordance with NSW Government guidelines.

What measures are being implemented in addition to extended construction hours?

A range of measures have already been implemented on-site by Lendlease Building to manage worker health and safety, including physical distancing measures between workers, staggered start times, rigorous and increased cleaning regimes, improved information, signage and hygiene education, and ongoing communication with suppliers and stakeholders.

How long will the extended construction hours be in place for?

The Environmental Planning and Assessment (COVID-19 Development—Health Services Facilities) Order 2020 provides guidelines across all current Heath Infrastructure projects. The Planning Order is an interim measure and may be in place for up to 12 months.

How will construction impacts be managed?

Whilst construction activities continue on-site within the extended construction hours, mitigation measures are in place to minimise impacts to affected stakeholders as per requirements outlined in the relevant planning approvals. We are committed to providing monthly notifications for upcoming works, as well as specific notifications for any works outside of the extended construction hours via email or phone as part of our consultation process.

How do these changes impact project completion?

This temporary and more flexible approach is expected to maintain progress on delivering the new hospital buildings through these uncertain times, while appropriately managing worker safety on-site.
