Game 1 featured a pitcher’s duel between Ken Myers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) and Moravian right hander Thomas Mariano, with neither team pushing a run across until Moravian struck first in the bottom of the seventh inning. After the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead on a fielder’s choice RBI, the Rangers came right back in the top of the eighth inning when Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Michael Scarzafava (Cliff-side Park, N.J./Cliffside Park). Junior Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) came on in relief for the Rangers and was brilliant, going a season-high five innings. His first three innings of work he did not allow a hit. In the top of the 10th the Rangers scored three runs on one hit and four walks. Senior Steven DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. The Moravian pitching staff then issued four consecutive walks, one intentional, to score two runs. The Rangers pushed one more run across on an RBI ground out by Matthew Kaplon (Palisades, Park, N.J./Palisades Park) to make the score 4-1. Moravian rallied in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game up, taking advantage of a one-out throwing error. The resilient Rangers, as they have done all season, put together one last rally to give Rock and the Drew defense a one-run advantage in the bottom of the 11th. Junior Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) led off the inning with his fourth hit of the day. The Greyhounds botched the sacrifice bunt attempt on the next batter allowing Bod-den to go all the way to third with no outs. The next batter, Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), ripped a ball into left field to give the Rangers a 5-4 lead. Rock closed the door on the top-seeded Greyhounds with a 1-2-3, 11th inning to earn his conference-leading seventh win of the season.

fifth win of the season and pitched his second-career nine inning complete game. The sophomore fanned seven batters and scattered just four hits on a Mariner offense that averaged over six runs a game coming into the contest. He allowed only one Mer-chant Marine runner past second base over his nine innings of work.

The Rangers got on the scoreboard in their first turn at the plate after a lead-off walk by Bodden. Two batters later, with two outs, senior Pete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) delivered an RBI single down the right field line to put the Rangers up 1-0.

Bodden found himself in the middle of another Ranger rally in the fifth. With one out he lined a double down the left field line and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter, DeBonis grounded a ball to third base in which the throw came to the plate and Bodden slid safely under the tag.

The two Ranger runs were all that Taylor would need as he allowed only one hit over the last four innings of work.

The championship game was a rematch versus Moravian on Monday morning. Drew took control of the game early, scoring the game’s first run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Steve Kowalski brought home Bodden who reached earlier on in the inning on one of his two hits on the afternoon.

The Rangers did their damage in the fourth and sixth innings, totaling seven runs. The scoring in the fourth saw Bodden come across the plate for the second time in the contest off a two-RBI single by Pete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). Bodden and Tuchol each had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the game.

In the sixth the Rangers opened up a 9-2 advantage after sending nine batters to the plate. Freshman Mike Chiarella (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) delivered his second RBI single of the game to kick off the four-run frame. Bodden hurt the Greyhounds again later in the inning, lining a single up the middle that scored two runs and pushed the Rangers lead to seven.

Freshman Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) turned in another gutty pitching performance on the mound. He allowed only four earned runs in seven and one third innings of work. He pitched the Rangers out of a number of jams early in the contest, eventually giving way to reliever Pat Rock with one out in the eighth.

The Greyhounds staged their comeback in their final two turns at the plate, scoring seven runs between the eighth and ninth innings. After scoring three runs in the eighth, one off Gregg Steinman’s third home run of the spring, the Rangers were one out away in the ninth inning from a conference championship.

Moravian strung together five-straight hits and made the score 9-7. Two batters later, David Zubia tied the game up at nine with a two-RBI single to up the middle. Rock struck out the final batter of the inning to get the Rangers to the bottom of the inning.

With one-out in the bottom of the ninth and the score tied, senior Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) delivered arguably the biggest hit in Drew baseball history, a walk-off home run to give fourth seed, Drew University a 10-9 victory over host and top seed Moravian College. The Rangers captured their first Landmark Conference Championship and earned an automatic berth to the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament for the first time in school history.
