Journal of Biochemistry & ExperimentalMedicine and (iii) Indian Journal of Technology.By chosing only one title amongst them i, e.Indian, Journal of Chemistry the scope of thesubject has been further narrowed down totheoretical and pure Chemistry only. This hasbeen done for two reasons. The first being thevoluminous data to be handled and the secondto have a closer study of the point of view of aparticular group of scientists doing basicresearch in the field.

The period covered is from January toJune 1970 i. e. Indian Journal of Chemistry:1970, ~ (No. 1-61.

3 Analysis

1.1 Source Journal

The six Issues of Vol. 8, 1970 of thesource journal Indian Journal of Chemistryselected for study contained 137 main articlesand 56 short communications. Thus of the totalarticles', 71 % are main papers and 29% areshort communications. Amongst the mainarticles only 3 are contributed by foreignauthors, two in joint authorship and One by asingle author. One short communication iscontributed by a foreign author in the capacityof a joint author. Rest of the articles are con-

56

tributed by Indian scientists. Therefore, thepresent analysis will indicate more or less thepoint of vi ew of Only Indian scientists.

1.2 Source Papers and-Citations

As given in Table 1 the main papers (137)contained 1863 citations averaging, 13. 6 perpaper. The short communications (56) accoun-ted for 393 citations averaging 7. 0] 8 per com-munication. Overall average of citations, thusbecomes II. '689 per paper. It is apparent thatauthors have tried to be more selective in citingreferences in short corn rn un ica t ion s and havecited only about half the number compared tothat of the citations in the main papers.

Out of 2256 citations 1958 are to per io-dical publications and the remaining 298 tonon-periodical publications. This shows thatmain source of references are journals giving86.76"/0 citations in the present study. Citationsfrom non-periodical publications account for13.25"/0 only.

1. 1 Citations to non-periodical PublicalZons

As observed from Table 2 a large numberof references cited from the non-periodicalsare from books, accounting for 81.21 % amongstthe non-periodicals citations. Next Comes

theses ba v ing 12.42'10 ioUowed by (l) Patents,(2) Symposium and Seminars and (3) Reports at(i) 3.350/0, (ii) 1.680/0 and 1.340/0 respectively.

3.4 Citation to Periodical Publications

Amongst the references cited from perio-dical publications, 63.38% come from thefirst twenty titles and the next: 23 titles accountfor another 16.450/0. Thus 79.830/0 referencesare from only first 43 journals as given inTable 3. 3 citations are to unpublished papersand 3 more references could not be deciphered,The rema ining 19. 87 '70 citations are from theres idua l 176 journals. The tota I number ofjournals cited are 219. The titles of thesejournals along with the number of referencescited from them are given in the Table 4. Thetitles are arranged in the sequence of decreas-ing number of cltatLOns and amongst the samenumber of citations alphabetically.

A study of Table 5 will reveal that U. S. A.,U. K" U. S. S. R., West Germany, IndiaNether lands, Japan, .Sw it ze r la nda nd France, accounting for 49, 38, 22, 21, 18, 12, 9, 8 and8 titles respectively, are the favoured countriesamong .the Indian scientists. This bias may bedue to the number of journals published in acountry, language of the journals anu the avai-lability of these titles to the Indian scientists.

3,5 The first 20 most cited Periodicals

Table 6 gives the first 20 most citedperiodicals which are arranged in the sequenceof decreasing number of citations. Rank ordergiven .in Chemical Abstracts Source Index is'also indicated against each t it l e., It is interest-ing to note that the three Indian journals whichsecure third, seventh and fourteenth ranks inthe. present study, find only 61 st, nil and 148thplaces respectively in the Chemical AbstractsSource Index list. Six journals from among thefirst 20 of So urce Index list find pla ce in thepresent list. The most cited jou r na l s by Indianscientists are the (l) .Jo ur na l tof AmericanChemical Society, (2) Journal of ChemicalSociety, U. K. and (3) Indian Journal of Chemis-try coming in the same sequence. It is evidentthat there is a national bias in citing the re-ferences.

Table 7 gives scattering of referenceschronologically among the first 20 most citedperiodicals. 3.220/0 citations are from earlierthan 1920's, 6.85% citations from 1921 to 1940,

Vol 21 No 1-2 Mar-June 1974

8.630/0 citations from 1941 to 1950, 25.860/0citations from 1951 to 1960 and 55. 44% cita-tions are from 1961 to 1970. The percentage ofreferences cited goes on decreasing along withtime and the most r'e cerit decade accounts formore than half (55.440/0) of the references.German periodicals which find eleventh andeighteenth places in the present study have adifferent story to tell. The number of referen-ces cited from these periodicals are more fromolder volumes' and the most recent decadeaccounts for only 5.410/. and 13.29% respec-tively for these two journals. This shows thatcomparative importance of German periodicalsis more for older volumes.

4 Conclusion

Due to enormous growth in scien'tificliterature, the scientists are teIl.dinE ..to Eublish.short communications. This e co norn l s e s both' ,in terms of space and time considerably. Thisis evident from short communications account-ing for 30% of the total articles. Short com-munications are more selective in citing re-ferences. The major source of informationare periodicals (86.760/0 citations). The ranksof periodicals obtained ,in the present analysiscould be a guide to select chemical journals, subject to the following limitations.

1. Source jo ur nc.l and period of study beinglimited, it will have its own weakness ingeneralising the above findings.

2. The citations are chosen by scientistswho judge its relevancy, which may notbe free from psychological and sociolo-gical aspects of the individual scientists.

3. Availability of references and its langua-ges may affect the trend of citations.

4. National bias may be a factor in selectingthe references.

5. This is a partial picture as the referen-ces cited may not be exhaustive [2].

No Indian journal is present among thefirst 50 of ·Chemical Abstracts Source IndexList". As reported by Sengupta [3], Brownslist as well as 1944 list did not contain anyIndian journal. This calls for some comment. The list of first 20 periodicals obtained in thepresent study contains three Indian journalshaving ranks 3, 7 and'14. Trend in citing the

German periodicals is on the decrease overthe passage of time. Thus the older volumes ofGerman periodicals are still in much use. TheTable 7 could be a guide in selecting the backsets to economi~e the space which is a scarcecommodity in all Libraries.
