En route from Bhubaneswar to Kolkata, in a20-km radius, lie reminders of a Buddhistculture that flourished in this region throughthe first millennium CE. TheRatnagiri site, the first to be excavated in the1950s, dates back to the time of the Guptaking Narasimha Gupta Baladitya (early 6thcentury CE). It was a major Buddhist centreof education and monastic life till the 11thcentury. Ratnagiri (Hill of Jewels) is locatedon a small hilltop overlooking the vast plainsdotted with hills in the distance. There aretwo Buddhist monasteries here. Theentrance to the former has beautiful carvedstatues of Vajrapani and Lokeshwara. Checkout the 10-foot high Buddha in a serenemeditative pose. There are sculptures fromHindu mythology as well. The secondmonastery has a lovely lifesized granitestatue of the Buddha.

Placed atop a hillock between the riversBirupa and Brahmani, the ExcavatedBuddhist Site brings to light the remains ofthe Buddhist establishment includingmonastic complex, stupas, architecturalsegments and other antiquities. Thecollection of antiquities have been displayedin the four galleries of the newly constructedsite museum located in the north-westdirection of the hillock. The excavated site also reveals the remainsof two important monasteries lying side byside, facing the "Mahastupa". Thebase of the stupa measures 14.35 m andconsists of five recesses and six projections.Also, the space between the walls used toserve as The space between the two wallsserved as a pathway. It is believedthat Hieun T’sang -- theChinese pilgrim visited Orissa during 639A.D. and left a graphic account regarding thestate of Buddhism. It was later that theconstruction process at Ratnagiri gotmomentum under “Bhauma Karas”.
