Welcome to the 2013-14 school year!! It’s going to be an AWESOME one! Sharyland staff are excited and ready to educate your children. Each staff member has attended at least 3 days of professional development this summer to better meet the needs of our students; many of them attended sessions on technology integration to continue improving on the BYOD initiative. We encourage you to allow

your child to bring their device to school to facilitate their learning and to prepare them for life beyond high school. You should have already signed the BYOD permission slip when you completed the online registration. Our teachers will continue to receive ideas on how to integrate technology into their lessons throughout this school year. This year, we encourage you as parents, to use the technology available to you. We have a wealth of information on our website that will help you stay abreast of your child’s education. Visiting the District website, along with the individual school website, will keep you completely “in the loop.” We are working to make our websites more user-friendly, so if you have suggestions, please feel free to give us input! This school year is our last year to be a one high school district. We invite you to keep track of the progress of the construction by visiting our district website. On the homepage, look on the left side about 3/4 of the way down you will see a rectangle that says “2nd High School.” Click on that link and you will see pictures from the very

beginning to current work that is taking place. Construction is on track and we will be opening the doors of Sharyland Pioneer High School for the 2014-15 school year. As the summer break comes to a close, our athletes are preparing for an award-winning season, our band students are already practicing to ensure a Division I year, and our teachers are diligently preparing their classrooms in anticipation of your children. I would like to remind you that I have an open door policy and would love to meet each and every parent in the district. If you have a few minutes, please come by to see me, email me, or call to make an appointment. We want to work with you to make this year a positively memorable one for your child! Together we will make Sharyland… Simply the BEST!!!

As new technology continues to change the world in which we live, it also provides many new and positive educational benefi ts for classroom instruction. To encourage this growth, and to ensure that we are truly empowering 21st Century Learners, Sharyland ISD is continuing our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative. Our network accepts and supports non-district devices in an effort to allow students/staff to bring their own technology devices on campus and to use them in the classroom to enhance the learning process. The decision to allow students to bring their own technology devices onto campus rests with the campus Principal, and whether students will be allowed to use their own devices in the classroom (including when and how) will be determined by each classroom teacher.

BYOD is a Privilege, not a Right The use of technology to access educational material is not a necessity or a right, but a privilege. A student does not have a right to use his or her laptop, cell phone or other electronic device while at school. When abused, privileges will be taken away. When respected, they will benefi t from the learning environment as a whole. Students and parents/guardians participating in BYOD must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, as well as all Board policies, particularly Technology Resources (Policy CQ).
