I have recognized during writing this that the years are passed so fast! I nearly worked for the railway market around quarter decade and the Turkish railway market is still the leader of the sector. ?zmir?de banliyö demiryolu hatlar?n?n i?letme f irmas? ?ZBAN, 6 ?ubat 2016 günü ?zmir?in Torbal? Banliyö Hatt?nda i?letmeye geçildi?ini ilan etti.

?ZBAN TCDD ile ?zmir Büyük?ehir Belediyesinin (% 50) ortakl??? ile kurulmu? olan bir f irma olup ?zmir?de Havaalan? ba?lant?s?n? da sa?layan Alia?a ile Cumaovas? aras?ndaki banliyö hatt?n? i?letmekle sorumludur. Bu hatta yolcu i?letme A?ustos 2010 tarihinde ba?lam??t?r. ?lk kesim 23 km uzunlu?unda olup Alsancak ile Cumaovas??n? birbirine ba?lamakta idi. Kuzeyde Alia?a ile Alsancak ba?lant?s? ise Aral?k 2010?da i?letemeye aç?larak bu hatt?n uzunlu?unu 80 km?ye ç?karm??t?r. ?lk

kesimde 32 istasyon mevcuttur.

Banliyö hatt?nda çal??an tren f ilosu CAF taraf?ndan tedarik edilen 33 EMU ve Hyundai Rotem taraf?ndan tedarik edilen 40 EMU trenden ibarettir.

Cumaovas??nda ba?layan yeni hat 6 istasyonla hatt? Tepeköy?e kadar uzatacak ve toplam banliyö hatt?n?n uzunlu?unu 110 km?ye ç?karacak. Trenler 27 dakikada bir sefer yapacak olup, günde 76 sefer planlanm??t?r.

Hatt?n Alia?a?dan ödeye önce Bergama sonra da Selçuk?a uzat?larak tüm hatt?n 185 km?ye ç?kar?lmas? planlanmaktad?r.

?ZBAN the operator of suburban railway network in ?zmir, has announced the commencement of services on the new extension of ?zmir?s suburban Torbal? Line, on 6th February 2016.

?ZBAN is a company established with a partnership between TCDD (Turkish State Railways) and ?zmir Metropolitan Municipality (50% share each) and is responsible from operating the suburban line of ?zmir between Alia?a and Cumaovas?, also connecting to the airport. The passenger operation on this line has started in August 2010. The first section connected Alsancak to Cumaovas? and was 23 km. long. The section connecting Alsancak to Alia?a, to the North opened to

operation in December 2010, increasing the length up to 80 km. This first section has 32 stations.

The fleet of the suburban system consists of 33 EMU trains supplied by CAF and 40 EMU trains supplied by Hyundai Rotem.

The new extension from Cumaovas? will connect the line up to Tepeköy with 6 new stations, extending the overall line up to 110 km.

The trains will serve with a headway of 27 minutes and 76 trips per day. It is planned to extend the line further from Alia?a to Bergama, then to Selçuk, increasing the length of the line up to 185 km.

Starting from 1990, our country has considerably invested urban transit system and now Metro, Light Rail Systems and Tramway systems are in service in 11 major cities, with ?stanbul in the lead, followed by Ankara, ?zmir, Bursa, Eski?ehir, Adana, Kayseri, Konya, Antalya, Samsun and Gaziantep. For these transit systems a total of about 2400 rail system vehicles have been procured, from 14 different companies in 12 countries, including Siemens/Germany, Alstom/France, Bombardier/Canada, Hyundai Rotem/S. Korea, ABB/Switzerland, CAF/Spain, Ansaldo Breda/Italy, Skoda/Czech Republic, CSR and CNR/China, Mitsubishi/Japan, Rotterdam SG2, MAN Düewag, V.Gotha. Besides losing foreign currency for all these different brands, our country has become dependent on foreign countries in terms of spare parts, stock cost and workmanship.Below is a table showing the current status in our country in terms of the rolling stock procured since 1990.

With its policy to prevent dependency on foreign rolling stock, ARUS decided to take action in supporting manufacturing of vehicles locally and as of March 5, 2012 enforced to have the 51% domestic contribution requirements in the tender for

procurement of 324 metro vehicles held in Ankara, which was awarded to CSR Electric Locomotive firm in China. And since this date, considered as a milestone for our country, up to this date the domestic contribution share in tenders for rolling stock has increased up to 60% throughout the whole country.

Below is a brief summary of the National Brands and domestic contribution rate of tenders won by ARUS members;

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality?s tender held on 10.04.2013 with a 47% domestic contribution requirement for procurement of 6 tramcars was awarded to a Turkish firm Durmazlar; our national brand ?pekböce?i (Silkworm) is now serving successfully on the Bursa T1 Tramway line.

Malatya Municipality?s tender held on 21.06.2013 for 10 trolley cars was awarded to a Turkish firm Bozankaya and the TCV Trambus vehicle manufactured with 50% domestic contribution has started serving the city of Malatya and later the number has been increased from 10 to 20 vehicles.

National brand of vehicles designed by ?stanbul Ula??m A.?. of which on 20.01.2014 completed their tests successfully after being manufactured now have a domestic contribution rate of 60% and 18 vehicles manufactured are now serving on the railway lines.

Kayseri Municipality?s tender held on 14.04.2014 with a minimum 35% domestic contribution requirement for procurement of 30 tramcars was awarded to a Turkish firm

Bozankaya; and currently the domestic contribution rate has increased up to 50%. The vehicles will be put on revenue service in May 2016.

Tender for procurement of 68 metro vehicles for the Hac?osman-Yenikap? Rail Transit System in ?stanbul was held on 18.09.2014 with a 40% domestic contribution requirement and was awarded to the Hyundai Rotem firm.

Regarding the tender to be held by ?stanbul Metropolitan Municipality?s for procurement of 300 metro vehicles, domestic contribution requirement was specified as 40% for the first 150 vehicles and 50% for the remaining 150 vehicles and the municipality has decided to require 60% domestic contribution in all the tenders they plan to hold in the future.

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality?s tender held on 23.02.2015 with a 60% domestic contribution requirement for procurement of 60 Light Rail System (LRT) vehicles and 12 tramcars was awarded to a Turkish firm Durmazlar and as of today, the domestic contribution rate in rail transit system vehicles has increased to the level of 60%.

The tender held for the procurement of 12 tramcars for Kocaeli Sekapark ? Otogar Tramway Line Project was held on 21.07.2015 with a 60% domestic contribution requirement and was awarded to a Turkish firm Durmazlar.

The tender held for the procurement of E-Bus on 04.08.2015 in Eski?ehir and on 26.08.2015 in Konya with a 60% domestic contribution requirement were awarded to a Turkish firm Bozankaya.

The tender held for the procurement of 18 tramcars for

Kayseri Belediyesi taraf?ndan 14.04.2014 tarihinde en az % 35 yerli katk? ?art? ile ihalesi yap?lan ve Bozankaya f irmam?z?n kazand??? 30 adet Tramvay arac? üretiminde

bugün yerli katk? oran? % 50 seviyelerine ç?km?? bulunmaktad?r. Araçlar May?s 2016 tarihinde hizmet vermeye ba?layacakt?r.

Mecidiye köy-Kabata?-Mahmut bey hatt?nda sat?n alaca?? 300 metro arac?nda ilk 150 adet için minimum % 40 ve ikinci 150 adet için % 50 yerli katk? ?art? getirmi? ve belediye bundan sonraki yapaca?? tüm ihalelerde % 60 yerli katk? ?art? koymay? kararla?t?rm??t?r.

23.02.2015 tarihinde Bursa Belediyesinin açt??? 60 adet Hafif Rayl? Metro (LRT)arac? ve 12 adet tramvay ihalesini ?artnamede yer alan minimum % 60 yerli katk? oran? ile Durmazlar f irmam?z kazanm?? ve böylece bugün it ibar?yla Rayl? Ula??m Sistemlerinde yerli katk? oran? % 60 seviyesine ula?m??t?r.

21.07.2015 tarihinde Kocaeli Sekapark ? Otogar Tramvay Hatt? Projesi 12 adet tramvay arac? al?m? ihalesini % 60 yerli katk? ?art? ile Durmazlar f irmam?z kazanm??t?r.

04.08.2015 tarihinde Eski?ehir ve 26.08.2015 tarihinde Konya Belediyelerinin E-Bus ihalelerini % 60 yerli katk? ile Bozankaya f irmam?z kazanm??t?r.

Antalya Phase II Rail System Vehicles was held on 25.09.2015 with a 60% domestic contribution requirement and was awarded to our Hyundai Rotem Firm.

The tender held for the procurement of rail system vehicles for Samsun Municipality?s ?Gar-Tekkeköy Light Rail System Line Project? was held on 01.10.2015 with a 53% domestic contribution requirement and was awarded to a Turkish firm Durmazlar.

In light of these developments our Ministry of Transportation has taken the decision to require a minimum of 53% domestic contribution in high speed trains to be procured and this decision is now another milestone for our country, in terms of High Speed Trains.

With the support of ARUS, Comminique on Domestic Products was published in Official Gazette on September 13, 2014 and the Regulations on Industrial Cooperation Program (Offset) was published in Official Gazette on February 15, 2015, putting these regulations in force, which can be considered as a revolution in domestic production and state policies.

ARUS has taken a major and active role with all its members in the development of National High Speed Train, National Passenger Train and National Freight Train.

Considering the fact that we have not succeeded in developing national brands in the automobile industry, today it is a notable development to be able to produce vehicles in the rail system from design stage up to the final product and our national brands are now serving on the rail system lines in various cities, including following: ?pekböce?i (Silkworm) Tramcar/ Bursa, ?stanbul brand tramcar/ ?stanbul, Green City brand light rail system vehicles /Bursa,

Kayseri Tramcar, Electrical TCV Trambus/ Malatya, Kocaeli, Samsun and Antalya Tramcar, National electrical locomotives E1000.

As can be observed, the campaign for which ARUS struggled to develop our own domestic and national brand that has started with the Ankara Metro has led to a major revolution in rail systems within the last three years, thanks to the devotion of the member establishments of ARUS and up to this date the ARUS firms have won tenders for manufacturing 224 Rail Transit System Vehicles.

Urban and Intercity Rail System Vehicles that Will Need to Be Procured up to the Year 2023:

Metro and LRT vehicles: 7000 units; High Speed Train Sets: 106 units, Diesel Locomotives: 350 units, Electrical Locomotives: 230 units, Suburban Train Sets: 500 units, DMU train sets: 350 units, Freight Cars: 49,000 units, Passenger Cars: 600 units.

The cost of purchasing all these required rail system vehicles is about 20 billion Euros and the cost together with the infrastructure is about 100 billion Euros. The market for this sector in the world is about 2 trillion USD.

As ARUS we are ready to manufacture these vehicles as local and national brands and also to export our national brands to the global markets.

This extraordinary success of the member establishments of ARUS is a warranty of what they are capable of succeeding with up to the year 2023. Because as the members of ARUS we firmly believe that the only development model that will help save our country is: PRODUCTION ECONOMY and DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL BRANDS

Alstom and IDRO (Industrial Development & Renovation Organization of Iran) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for co-operation in the mainline and urban transport sectors on January 27, 2016 in Paris. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, Iranian Minister of Industry, Dr. S Reza Norouzzadeh, Iranian Deputy Minister of Commerce, Mines and Trade and Chairman of IDRO, and Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Chairman and CEO of Alstom.

The aim of the Memorandum of Understanding is to init iate discussions for industrial cooperation and train

production and maintenance in Iran, which may include formation of a joint venture.

The partnership will focus on development of the railway infrastructure to help improve the national and urban public transportation. Currently Iran has a railway network of about 15,000 kms and Iran has announced that they are planning to extend it up to 25,000 km by the next ten years. For this purpose, Iran plans to invest about 25 bill ion US$ until 2025 for modernization and expansion of its railway network. All these extensions will help Iran to connect to the regional rail networks in neighboring countries and to China?s Silk Road.

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation and Turkish based transportation manufacturer Bozankaya Inc, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening their strategic partnership in the development of high speed trains for the Turkish rail market. The agreement was signed in Ankara, Turkey, by Mr Murat Bozankaya, President of Bozankaya Group Companies and Furio Rossi, Managing Director Turkey, Bombardier Transportation, in the presence of the Canadian Ambassador to Turkey, Azerbaidjan, Georgia and Turkmenistan, the Honourable John Holmes. Aytunç Günay, Bozankaya Board Chairman, Halil Tufan Özkan and Nezih Erturk Bombardier Turkey Sales Directors and the senior officials of the two companies also attended the meeting.

TCDD Very High Speed Train Purchase Tender is expected

According to the agreement, both parties agree to work together in the context of an expected invitation to tender from the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) to develop and produce high speed trains. Turkey is eager to acquire quality high speed trains to operate on their newly developed tracks

connecting Istanbul to the capital of Ankara, as well as for

the entire Turkish high speed rail network. Bombardier Transportation?s high speed and very high speed competency is known world-wide. The company has accumulated over 20-years? experience in the high speed sector and has participated in the delivery of over 850 trains and vehicles for high speed and very high speed applications.

Considering the high-speed train lines that are under construction or the ones that are nearly finished, we are predicting that there will be a need for at least 200 additional

high-speed trains. The statements made by official authorities also suggest

that there is a preparation for bidding this project. We are realizing this partnership to join forces that can best respond to this need.

Günay has also emphasized that the first phase preparation is for the set of 80 high-speed trains, which exceed 2 billion Euros in value. ?We estimate that this number will increase to 200 vehicles in the future biddings. With this partnership, our goal is to bring this technology to Turkey. In this context,

Bozankaya and Bombardier will make a significant technology transfer to Turkey with their investments. With this partnership, we will have realized another investment. We are predicting an investment on a brand new location and a new organization for the manufacturing of high speed trains.?

Yap? Merkezi, which has undertaken many major urban rail system construction projects in various cities in Turkey, including ?stanbul, Ankara, ?zmir, Bursa, Eski?ehir had established its first and largest company the Yap? Merkezi Construction and Industry Inc. in 1965. As a firm that has provided services in many national and international projects, including rail systems, Yap? preparations for the 2022 World Soccer Cup. It is planned to construct a metro system of 300 km with 100 stations in the Capital city of Doha, consisting of four main lines. The lines are called Golden, Red, Blue and Green Lines and on April 23, 2014 the Construction Contract for the Golden Line was signed with the Joint Venture of which Yap? Merkezi and STFA from Turkey are partners. The 4.4 billion dollar project has a construction period of 54 months with a plan to commence revenue operation in 2018. Besides Yap? Merkezi and STFA, the other firms forming the joint venture which is the Contractor of the project, are Aktor from Greece, Larsen Toubro from India and Aj Jaber Engineering from Qatar.

On February 20 the underground Wehrhahn Line in Dusseldorf commenced passenger services.

The 3.4 km long Wehrhahn Line connecting the Wehrhahn Station at the north with Bilk at the south, was planned to replace the street tram running through the city center. The Wehrhahn Line was first planned as a part of underground rail network in 1970s and the construction works started at the beginning of 1980?s. However the final planning approval was done much later in 2007 and tunnel excavation works were conducted between 2008-2012. A Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine was used to bore two 8.3m

diameter twin tunnels.

While the Bilk and Wehrhahn stations are at the surface, the other 6 stations are underground stations. The platform lengths of stations is 90 m and will serve low floor trams and LRV?s. The Bilk and Wehrhahn Stations both are transfer stations to the S-Bahn services. The project cost 843.6 million ?.

Siemens has supplied 76 tramcars to be operated on the line. Also four U-Bahn lines replacing former tram routes will now use the Wehrhahn Line.

In February 2016 the Moscow Metro opens its 200th station and commences automatic train operation.

On January 18 2016 Moscow metro had opened the Troparyevo-Rumyantsevo line, which is a 2.5 km extension of the Moscow Metro Line 1 towards south with one station. The Rumyantsevo station was constructed 12 m underground.

Now on February 15, 2016 the 1.9 km long further extension from Rumyantsevo to Salaryevo is completed and the Salaryevo station opens for passenger services. With this last station, Moscow Metro completes its 200th station in its metro network.

The project also includes the construction of the third depot, which will be finished soon.

On the other hand, Moscow metro has its first train equipped with automatic train protection put on service on line 5 in February 2016.

Earlier on December 8, 2015 had opened the 1.4 km southern extension of Line 1, the Yugo-Zapadnaya line. Also in 2015, the tunneling of the 2.7 km northern extension of Metro Line 2 was completed on November 30, 2015.

Moscow metro will have its new metro cars being delivered in 2017. The contract for 768 metro cars was signed in Jan 2015 and is planned to be delivered between 2017 and 2020 in four lots. These cars will have wider doorways and improved ventilation and air conditioning, compared to the existing cars. The cars will be operated as 8 car trains on Metro Line 7.

Moscow Metro stated that they will need to procure at least 2300 new cars until 2020 Besides the extension of its metro line, Moscow also has started planning for two new tramway lines on the southern part of the city in December 2015. The first line is planned to be 8.3 km long and have 10 stops and the second line will be 11.7 km long and have 16 stops and will have a circular route.

On 23.02.2016 Siemens displays the first of 74 Inspiro Vehicles Manufactured for Riyadh Metro

The Riyadh Metro planned to open in 2019 is a 175 km metro network with six lines. Siemens is a partner of the BACS consortium together with Bechtel, Almabani General Contractors and Consolidated Contractors Co, which is responsible from constructing Line 1 and 2 of the Riyadh Metro. The length of the line to be built at 1.5 billion ? is 64 kms. In the project, Siemens is supplying the vehicles, signaling and train control and electrification equipment.

The trains based on Inspiro design are manufactured as

two and four car trains. The first of the 74 metro vehicles to be supplied were presented in Vienna on 23.02.2016, where it is now being tested at the Rail Tech Arsenal Climate Chamber. 45 four car train sets will run on Line 1 and 29 two car train sets will run on Line 2. Siemens is planning to begin dynamic trials at the test center at Wildenrath in Germany, this spring. While the driverless trains are based on Inspiro design, the bogies, traction systems, brakes and doors are equipped with seals and filters against sand ingress. The air conditioning systems is also more powerful than the original Insipiro design.

Investigations Suggest that a Human Error Caused the Collision of Two Trains in Southern Bavaria

It has been revealed by the investigation team that the train crash that killed 11 people in Southern Bavaria on February 9 was caused by human error.

On February 9, 2016 the 06:10 Hozkirchen-Rosenheim train (six car train) and the 06:43 Rosenheim - Holzkirchen train (a three car train) collided with each other at 06:48 at local time between Kolbermoor and Bad Aibling, south of Munich. The head on collision killed 11 people, including both drivers and guards, and injured over 100 people, among which more than 20 are reported to be seriously injured. The Stadler Flirt trains were operated by Transdev subsidiary Meridian on a 37 km long line which is equipped with PZB 90 cab

signaling and train protection. Most of the 37 km line is a single track.

The Federal Railway Accident Investigation Board (EUB) has launched an inquiry for this accident, which is claimed to be the worst accident in Bavaria rail network in the last 40 years. At the time of the crash, both trains were moving on the same track, in opposite directions. Investigation was focused mainly on the reason why both of the trains were moving on the same track at that time. Investigation showed that there was no evidence of any technical defect.

Within the third week of February, the investigator team revealed that the accident was caused by

Information recovered from data recorders show that one of the trains was moving at a speed of 100 kph while the other more than 50 kph. Since the crash occurred on a curved section of the line, It

is highly probable that the drivers may not have seen the other train until the last moment. Also one of the trains was running late, according to the time table. While the trains were built according to the latest crashworthiness standards, the accident left the leading cars in a fully damaged state.The 39 years old local train dispatcher is now charged with involuntary manslaughter. Investigation is still continuing on this accident.

Kenya to Construct Light Rail System in Nairobi

On February 19 President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the 150 million US$ project of light rail system will be launched by June.

The 24 km long light rail system is planned to be built on the road reserves. The first phase is planned to link the terminal station of railway line being constructed between Nairobi and Mombasa and works are

ongoing to finalize the route. The project will be co-financed by Hungary. There are no details given on how the Contractor will be selected. . As can be remembered the condition on Chinese loans received earlier, restricted the Contractor to be from China. It is not yet clear what conditions will be imposed by Hungary in financing the project.
