But I believe the best part of the club is our all-inclusive culture. There are no cliques of any kind. We are proud to be known as the club with the highest proportion of female members in the district. We have apart from Malaysians, members from (in alphabetical order) Australia, Britain, Korea, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sweden and Switzerland. So we are probably also the most cosmopolitan club in the district! We are fortunate to have the very energetic James Cheong as our Membership director. With his hard work and the tireless efforts of our members, notably PP Kong, in bringing guests to attend club meetings, we look forward to our first signing this Rotary year. Having recruited members we hope that they would enjoy the Rotary experience. One way is for our members to undertake a role that is significant to them and also suited to their interest. That is the surest way for members to buy into the club and feel truly a part of the club in spirit. I urge those who see a role that they would like to fulfill to come forward and volunteer for it. New Members for the New Rotary Year

August in our Rotary calendar is Membership Month. We do look forward toincreasing our membership as there is work to be done across the avenues ofservice and also the RCBKS Education Fund. The more hands we have thebetter.

What are the unique selling points of the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise? Our club is unique in that we are very informal by comparison to most in ourdistrict. Our dress code at meetings is presentable for a weekend. We preferto do without the jacket and tie after a week at work. Yet as part of arespectable international organization we maintain an appropriatepresentation that allows us to knock on and open any door in the name ofRotary.

While some may think that the time of our meeting is unearthly, we areusually done by 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. This leaves the weekend free for thefamily or other hobbies and is decidedly an advantage. If we think like theshoe salesman in a land where no one wears shoes, the opportunities areimmense!

But I believe the best part of the club is our all-inclusive culture. There are nocliques of any kind. We are proud to be known as the club with the highestproportion of female members in the district. We have apart from Malaysians, members from (in alphabetical order) Australia, Britain, Korea, New Zealand,Pakistan, Sweden and Switzerland. So we are probably also the mostcosmopolitan club in the district!

We are fortunate to have the very energetic James Cheong as ourMembership director. With his hard work and the tireless efforts of ourmembers, notably PP Kong, in bringing guests to attend club meetings, welook forward to our first signing this Rotary year.

Having recruited members we hope that they would enjoy the Rotaryexperience. One way is for our members to undertake a role that issignificant to them and also suited to their interest. That is the surest way formembers to buy into the club and feel truly a part of the club in spirit. I urgethose who see a role that they would like to fulfill to come forward andvolunteer for it.

While the board of directors is important to any Rotary Club, the success ofour club ultimately depends on members being enthusiastic about what webelieve in and what we do. So let us put our collective shoulders to the Rotarywheel to maintain the momentum we have gathered in the past year.

President’s Message

What is your question?

A friend once asked Isidor I Rabi, aNobel Price winner in physics, howhe became a scientist. Rabi repliedthat ever day after school his motherwould talk to him about his schoolday. She was n’t so much interestedin what he had learned that day, butshe always inquired, ‘ Did you ask aGOOD question today?’ ‘ Askinggood questions,’ Rabi said, ‘mademe become a scientist.’

Good questions help to seek goodanswers that will lead to good actionsand hence good results. You maysay good questions will lead to goodresults. So our President Poay Limasked his Board of Directors goodquestions too. And so we askedourselves many questions tooespecially pertaining to the future ofour REF Education Fund Program .Meetings will be held to search foranswers and action plans. We seekmembers involvement and ownershipas REF Chairman Yoke Leongcontinues to help answer many of thequestions that will take the Programto the next level.

In life there is no difference as we tooask and continue to ask manyquestions to create a better future aswell as Happiness for all. But if noquestions are asked , then likely it iseither the dead end of subject matteror lack of thinking . We may askoccasionally too many questions orillogical ones that upset others. Sowe must be mindful of asking theright questions at the right time.

The Governor s Newsletter has a wealth of information on past activities thatinspire and in particular I wish to single out Rtn VG Chandran. I wouldencourage you to read his comments . He has been in Rotary since I wasthere. Wow – perhaps 30 plus years and he is still a very active member. He said ‘While we can make you a member of our Rotary club, we cannotmake you a Rotarian. This is an honour , you must gain yourself.’ Words ofwisdom.

Let us use August well . Use august to inspire thoughts and responsibility.Use August to initiate meaningful roles for all members and create that beliefthat next august will be thankful of what we did this august . Perhaps thenext question to ask ‘ What am i contributing as a Rotarian?’

SMK Sri Hartamas InteractClub IU Day

KDU University College was thevenue for this year’s InternationalUnderstanding Day for ourInteract Club of Sri HartamasSecondary School. Theircavernous hall was filled wall towall with our Interactors and theircounterparts from other schoolsas well. The youngsters weresmartly decked out, as to beexpected.

New Generations Chair Ghaurry was well-recognised and an old friend to theInteractors. Alvin was also in attendance. We were received by the incomingboard who wore masks to keep their identity mysterious – to be revealedwhen they were formally installed. It added a nice twist to the day.

This year, the club learned that anything worth doing is worth doingthemselves. So they put up a band and they put on their own dancers. Ifwhat we saw was any indication, it is a wonder that they haven’t staged theirown entertainment earlier. The standard of the performance was way upthere. Even their installation ceremony was a class act.

The Principal Puan Rosimawati spoke of the school’s expectations of them. The President of their Parents-Teachers’ Association urged them to go ondoing their good work. I congratulated them for their outgoing board led byPres Darren for the good community service they have rendered. It wasnoteworthy to me that they encountered problems during their year in officeand managed to solve them before the end of their tenure. I welcomed theincoming board under President May May challenged the incoming board todo the same if not better.

While they had a good time partying, they managed to raise RM10,000 fortheir chosen charity Breast Cancer Welfare Association. Well Done!

Around theRotary World

Rotarians have been extolling the virtues of wearing a Rotarypin on RI’s official LinkedIn group. Pins come in manydesigns, including this one from vendor Russell-Hampton.

Luanne Triolo was several weeks into a challenge to wear her Rotary pin for60 days straight when she realized she had missed a day. So the 2009-10president of the Rotary Club of Carol Stream, Illinois, USA, started all overagain to meet the challenge William Ferreira, governor of District 6440, hadset before all his club presidents.“You get used to it. It’s something that isreally good to do,” says Triolo. “Different pins do catch people’s eye indifferent ways.”

Many Rotarians are serious about wearing their Rotary pins. Eugene Beil, past governor of District 6950 (Florida, USA) and a member of the RotaryClub of Hudson, tapped into that dedication recently when he started adiscussion thread on RI’s official LinkedIn group, asking Rotarians whetherthey wear their pins every day or just for meetings. The discussion hasprompted more than 190 comments.

“I am happy with the feedback,” Beil says. “I feel strongly about the value ofwearing the pin every day. Whether you are at the grocery store, at work, oranywhere, you never know when a stranger is going to notice and you havean opportunity to explain Rotary to them.”

Tony Quinn, governor of District 1200 (England), notes on the LinkedInthread that Rotarians agree to wear their pins at all times when they areinducted.

“Remember what Past RI President Bob Barth had to say,” Quinn notes.“He said that a Rotary pin should say this about the wearer: ‘You can relyon me, I am dependable, I am reliable, I give more than I take, and I amavailable.’ I can’t think of a better reason to wear it at all time.”

Do you wear your Rotary pin everyday?
