Aetat 38. He had several attacks of

inflammation in the left eye. One of

which was treated by mercury.

Admitted 16th of October. Slight

conjunctival inflammation. Several

fibres of the lens prolonged and (?) to

the lens from an old attack of the infl.

Lens transparent. Cornea slightly

muddy. Can see distant objects better

than near. Can make his way through

the street (?) well. Was treated with

the 4th of a grain of iodide of

mercury 3 times a day - until the 24th

without relief to vision. Salivation

was produced, conjunctival

inflammation disappeared. Was then

treated with 5 grains of hydro (?) 3

times a day. And solution of bell (?)

dropped into the eyes. Until the 9th

November when he was discharged

with (?) improvement of vision. Can

read the letters over the shops across

the street. Appearance of iris the

same.'

States that he has always been

subject to an eruption on the face

during severe attacks of which he has

had inflammation and swelling of the

eyes. About 3 years ago first began to

lose the sight in his left eye. Shortly

after in the right. Can give no further

history. Admitted November 15th

1839. Current state - has a cataract

in each eye. Right eye - lens opaque

of a milky whiteness with patches of

a more transparent substance in front.

Has the appearance of a (?) cataract.

Pupil regular. Iris moveable. Left eye

- pupil irregular. Iris abhorrent to the

lenticular capsule. A very small

portion of lens visible, opacity of the

same colour as the right. Iris

immoveable. State of vision - can

barely distinguish light from

darkness with the right eye. Cannot

see the sashes of the window. Left

eye totally blind. Often sees flashes

of light in the dark of different

colours. Health very good. 22nd the

right pupil was dilated with (?),

needle introduced and cataract

broken up. It was soft and gave way

easily under the needle. Several large

fragments were pushed into the (?)

chamber. Very little pain was felt.

Complained of no pain, nausea or

any unpleasant symptoms after the

operation, Remained in hospital until

January 7th. Discharged with (?)

good vision. Fragments of lens not

entirely (?)'

discharged matter of good quality. All

the (?) now put him on a course of (?)

after having (?) his mouth became

sore - the ulcer lost its (?) and it

looked in every aspect healthy - but

then even more granulation (?) than

what is usual.'

disease of which they access. The

central cicatrice was left by an ulcer,

one of the first crop of (?) ulcers. The

small black pitting and the waxen

whitening of this cicatrice are

remarkable. The copper coloured

cicatrice are those of the last series or

crop of (?) ulcers. Remarkable for the

peculiar copper colour, for their

irregular sunken surface. In many

places this last crop formed on edges

of cicatrices of the first series or crop.'
