O Come Let Us Adore Him
I know, we haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet, so why the hurry to bring up Advent and Christmas? In the US, the celebration of secular Xmas begins right after Halloween. People are jumping online to check out the best prices for the gifts on their Christmas list. And while the stores and shops are not crammed yet, we know they will be beginning later this week on “Black Friday”. And while I no longer have any illusions about making much of a change in deeply embedded habits, I still want to do everything I can do to encourage the celebration of the best Advent and Christmas ever-- as truly Catholic and Holy Seasons.
So What Exactly Is Advent About?
❖ Responding to John the Baptist’s call for repentance.
❖ Waiting in joyful hope for the final & glorious coming of Jesus at the end of time.
❖ Making efforts to not let the secular shopping feast of Xmas overpower the celebration of Christ’s birth.
❖ Placing Jesse Tree decorations on what will become the Christmas Tree.
❖ Placing an Advent Wreath on or near the dining table and lightings its candles each week as you stand before it in prayer.
❖ Encouraging children to take one of the tags on The Giving Tree to reinforce the importance of love and service for all awaiting the birthday of The Savior.
And What About a
Truly Catholic Christmas?
❖ Remembering the Reason for The Season—Thanking Our Father for the greatest GIFT of all time.
❖ Telling the kids that gift-giving at Christmas is an expression of gratitude for God’s greatest GIFT!
❖ Encouraging children to take a tag from the Giving Tree and to purchase a gift for Jesus who lives in the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the sick, and the imprisoned.
❖ Always say Merry Christmas not happy holidays.
WILL YOU BE AMONG THOSE COMMITTED
TO KEEPING CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS?
CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS?
ARE YOU PREPARED
FOR A CATHOLIC
ADVENT AND
CHRISTMAS?

All Christians should pray regularly for all people who suffer from infirmities of every kind. But this list is intended for individuals who are acutely ill or facing surgery until they are back on the mend. Names will ordinarily be removed after 3 weeks, but if the illness persists you can call us and we will keep their names on for an additional three weeks.

JOURNEY OF FAITH
Wednesday November 29th
7pm Joyce Center
JOF is the process we follow to lead inquirers into
the Catholic faith on their way to celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation. It began on August 30th with the first session of the ALPHA course and continues—with breaks-- until after Easter.
JOF is also for Catholics who didn’t receive
Confirmation or Eucharist as children, or who are simply in need of updating their understanding of the faith so as to become more intentional disciples of Jesus. Finally, it is for Sponsors who will accompany all these inquirers on the Journey.
ALL SOULS MONTH
THE BOOK OF THE NAMES OF THE
DEAD AND THE EASTER CANDLE
are placed close to the altar throughout November as each week we commend to God the souls of the faithful departed.
The Names on the Church Wall Are Those of Parish Members Who Died Since Last All Souls Day.
MARGARET MOVING TO KANSAS
Margaret & Vic have decided—after much prayer & reflection--to make this move so as to live closeby their daughter Veronica and husband, Ben, and their two precious granddaughters. They have purchased a home in Prairie Village, Kansas and Margaret will take on a new job as Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Ann Parish We owe Margaret a great debt of gratitude for the tremendous work she has done here over a span of more than 15 years. St. Andrew’s has arguably the best musical liturgy in the Archdiocese in large part due to her leadership. This has been attested to by countless visitors, including priests, over the years. We also have one of the most solid programs of adult formation that for the past two plus years has culminated with the fantastic Alpha Course that is providing so many people the opportunity to experience a closer tie to Christ and the Church. These will be very difficult shoes to fill, but God never closes a door that he doesn’t also open a window. Not all of you may be aware of this but Vic has put in countless volunteer hours in many areas of parish life, but especially in helping us to have such a beautifully decorated church especially at Christmas and Easter. He will also be missed in the choir and the contemporary ensemble. Many of us have had the joy of watching while their children, especially Ondrej, Thomas, and Christina have grown in wisdom, grace, and talent right before our eyes. Veronica was married here. The “Family Hochla” will be dearly missed by all of us. Thanks for the memories. The move is scheduled to take place in mid-December.

IS THANKSGIVING DAY A HOLY DAY?
Since the very word Eucharist means to Give Thanks, Catholic Christians get to celebrate Thanksgiving each and every time we gather for Mass.
On Thanksgiving Day we are used to gathering around a table of plenty. But isn’t the real Table of Plenty to be found in the church?
For the last many years, we have been encouraging our most faithful parishioners to participate in the Eucharist on Thanksgiving Eve or Day.
Each year, the numbers increase as more and more people realize that while Thanksgiving Day in not a holyday of obligation, it is a Holy Day of Opportunity for truly grateful Catholics.
In place of the homily at these Masses, everyone who chooses to may come and offer a short thanksgiving.
Everyone is also invited to bake or purchase a special loaf of bread that is blessed after Communion and is exchanged afterwards.
