Faith – Courage - Obedience

Francis Chan

DISCUSSION GUIDE

1. Why would Jesus’ instruction to Simon for him to cast his nets into the deep water make little sense from a fisherman’s perspective? (Luke 5:1-4)

In the Sea of Galilee all fishermen knew that you did better fishing at night not during the day.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

2. How did Simon respond to this instruction? (v. 5)

He addressed Jesus with respect and he obeyed his instruction.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

3. Why was Simon’s obedience remarkable?

a. He followed the instructions of a carpenterb. He had been fishing at the best time of dayc. He had to be exhausted

DISCUSSION GUIDE

4. How did Simon Peter react towards Jesus after his miraculous catch? (v. 8)

He fell to his knees and acknowledged Jesus as Lord and confessed his sin.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

5. Peter and the other men left everything to follow Jesus. What is holding you back from completely living for Him? (vs. 10-11)

DISCUSSION GUIDE

6. What was the significance of the man with leprosy approaching Jesus? (v. 12)

Lepers would not dare approach people who did not have leprosy, much less a man who was the

center of attention.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

7. What was the significance of Jesus touching the leper? (v. 13)

Touching the man with leprosy would have made Jesus ceremonially unclean.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

8. Why would Jesus instruct the man cured of leprosy to tell no one, but to tell a priest? (v. 14)

He wanted the miracle to be confirmed by a priest and to follow the  Levitical law.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

9. What is the significance for you that even Jesus withdrew frequently to pray?

DISCUSSION GUIDE

10. How did the friends of the man who was paralyzed show great faith and courage? (vs. 18-19)

They would not be denied and knew they had to get their friend before Jesus, even in front of the

leaders of the community.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

11. What was the significance of Jesus stating that the man’s sins were forgiven? (v. 20)

This implied that Jesus was divine and had the power to forgive sins.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

12. How did the paralyzed man respond to Jesus’ command to get up? (vs. 24-25)

He immediately got up and went home to glorify God.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

13. How do you need to be obedient to God’s call on your life?

Signs in Life

1. Discuss miracles that you see in nature.2. Discuss miracles that you have observed or heard about in other people.3. Discuss miracles that have happened in your life.4. Discuss challenges or prayer needs that you currently have where you need an act of God.5. How does God working in your life in the past motivate you to seek His power for the future?

Christ says, “Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I

want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don’t want to cut

off a branch here and a branch there. I want to have the whole tree cut down. I don’t want to drill the tooth, or crown it, or stop it, but to have it out. Hand over the

natural self, all the desires which you think are innocent as well as the ones you think are wicked – the whole outfit. I

will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you myself: my own shall become yours.”
