Most of the house id in darkness, but I sit at my drawing table with a bright light shining on a blank page. This is when my creative energy flows. I pick up a pencil and my hand begins to travel across the page. I draw pictures that tell a story. I laugh to myself, as my characters take on a life their own. For hours, I am lost in a process where I am the creator of another world. Story2 I would like to recommend a cartoon called “Billy’s World.” It is a very funny cartoon about a thirteen-year-old boy who runs for prime minister of Australia. Much to everyone’s surprise, he wins! This may sound like a silly fantasy, but this cartoon is cleverer than that. It shows the problems that modern countries face. It shows that the old way that politicians try to solve problems does not work. Thirteen-year-old Billy is a successful leader because hehas fresh ideas about the world. Now that I read this cartoon, I pay more attention to what is happening in the world. Not only is “Billy’s world” entertaining, but it’s educational, too. I think everyone should read it.

Our bodies are more powerful than our thoughts.e. Today, the average person can run a four-minute mile.

2. Which is the tone of this passage?a. Frightening.b. Inspiring.c. Foolish.d. Frustrating.e. Pessimistic.

In the early 1900s, people believed it was impossible for a human to run

a mile in less than four minutes. The best runners of the day came close to run-

ning a four-minute mile, but no one could break that barrier. Most people

thought it was dangerous to even try to run that fast. But Roger Bannister

believed he could do it. In 1954, he ran a mile in three minutes and 59.4

seconds. The most amazing thing is that, by 1957, sixteen other runners also

ran a mile in less than four minutes. Once Bannister proved it could be done,

other runners developed the self-confidence to do it as well. This shows that our

beliefs about ourselves can limit us or inspire us.

may think that their friends are most important. The parents usually think that

family comes first. Teenagers often want to spend money on new clothes while

parents want to spend it on education and books. These differences often

cause conflicts. Both sides can help lessen the conflicts. Parents should

And I gained an incredible amount of self-confidence from going beyond my perceived limits.

I also made deep friendships.

I never before trusted that I could be myself with no airs and people would still like me.

But above all, Outward Bound helped me learn who I was.

Out in the quiet of the wilderness with no distractions, I could actually hear my own thoughts.

I learned things about myself that I never knew before and I felt emotions I had never felt before.

So it seems that there are many excellent reasons for students to wear uniforms.

But that is only one side of the story Opponents of uniforms are very quick to point out the

faults in the other side’s argument.

For example, the Long Beach study has come under a lot of criticism

It is true that crime and student suspensions decreased

after uniforms were required.

However, during that same time, several other major changes were made in the district to improve student behavior.

For example, more teachers stood in the hallways to watch kids during class changes.

Therefore, it is impossible to say that uniforms caused the positive changes.

In fact, there is little valid evidence to support the claims for school uniforms.

Only two scientific students have been conducted about uniforms in the US.

Neither study found a positive effect of uniforms on student behavior or achievement.

5 So it seems that there are many excellent reasons for students to wear uniforms. But that is only one side of the story. Opponents of uniforms are very quick to point out the faults in the other side’s argument. For example, the Long Beach study has come under a lot of criticism. It is true that crime and student suspensions decreased after uniforms were required. However, during that same time, several othermajor changes were made in the district to improve student behavior. For example, more teachers stood in the hallways to watch kids during class changes. Therefore, it is impossible to say that uniforms caused the positive changes.6 In fact, there is little valid evidence to support the claims for schooluniforms. Only two scientific studies have been conducted about uniformsin the US. Neither study found a positive effect of uniforms on studentbehavior or achievement.

It is like being on a team where all the students work together to be the best. When you see other students wearing your uniform, you know they are on your side. Also, people in the community can easily identify what school the student is from. Therefore, I think students behave better in uniform so they can give their school a better image. Story2

I hate school uniforms! But follow me and you will see how I make the most of it. I’m wearing my red plaid skirt, my white shirt, and white knee socks – boring! But I have to wear these things or my teachers will send me home. But now, for the accessories! Today’s theme is blue ribbons. First, I tie blue bows in my hair and put a blue ribbon around my neck. I put on blue earrings to match. Next, I am taking the plain white laces out of my shoes and I am putting in blue ribbons instead. Now, I will choose my blue backpack and pin blue to it. All finished. What do you think?

Many Americans believe that school uniforms take away students’ rightsand freedoms. The United States Constitution guarantees all Americans thefreedom to express their opinions. The Supreme Court has agreed that students have the right to express themselves through their clothing. In 1969,two high school students wore black armbands to school to protest the VietnamWar. As a result, the principal did not allow the students to come to school. One student brought the case to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Courtdecided that the school was wrong because the student had the right to expressherself. So how are school uniforms any different? For example, in a schoolwith uniforms, a student could not wear a tee shirt that advertises a politicalissue. Doesn’t that take away the student’s freedom of expression?
