We are so pleased that our new image of St. Joseph is on display in our newly painted gathering space. The image depicts the Lord welcoming his father Joseph

to paradise and crowning him in gratitude for his faithful service as his earthly father. Many thanks to Rich Obarowski for framing the image for display.

St. Joseph, patron of fathers and protector of the Church, pray for us.

I recently received a question from a parishioner about the Catholic Church’s position on mediums and spiritualists. Is it legitimate to seek to communicate with the spirits of those who have gone before us in death? From the time of Moses the practice of consulting the spirits of those who have died was already forbidden. The Word of God speaks clearly against this practice in Deuteronomy 18:10-12:

“Let there not be found among you anyone who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, augur, or sorcerer, or who casts spells, consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. “ Even thousands of years ago human beings sought out the spirits of those who had passed as a way of gaining knowledge in this life. The Bible warned against this practice and the dangers that could come from trying to manipulate knowledge from the spirit world. In 1 Samuel 28, we hear the story of King Saul who seeks a medium in an attempt to consult the soul of Samuel from beyond the grave. The king finds a medium to help him, and as a result of this action, King Saul becomes the victim of an evil spirit. The presence of that spirit torments Saul for years after the consultation, even to the point that young David was called in to play the harp for the king. The music of David’s harp was the only consolation for the headaches of the king. The teaching of the Church on this question is clear: “All forms of divination are to be rejected: conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone” (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church 2116). The life of Christian faith calls us to place trust in God even though there are many aspects of our lives that we cannot understand with clarity. We walk by faith, and not by sight, and relying on the Lord means that we cling to his promises even when we cannot see the future before us. For this reason, consulting with mediums and seeking to communicate with the souls of those who have died is not sanctioned by Church teaching. The consultation of spirits also opens the faithful to possible deception. A person in pain who is seeking answers from a medium is more vulnerable to the power of suggestion. There is a danger of a false hope or a false consolation being provided in such instances, even from a well-intentioned person seeking to help. Even more serious than this, invoking the power of spirits can open a person to the persuasive powers of evil and darkness that desire to deceive God’s people. It is not uncommon that mediums may use references to Christianity, the Bible, and angels as part of their services. This makes the practice of seeking messages from “the other side” seem acceptable to a Christian mindset. I am neither speaking for other Christian churches (for I am not qualified to speak on their teachings) nor am I making a personal attack on any medium (for I do not know any personally). But in answer to the question posed to me regarding the Church’s position on the practices of mediums, it is clear from both the Scriptures and our official teaching that such practices are not allowed and potentially dangerous to the spiritual health of God’s

people. ~Fr. Nick
