FEBRUARY 2013 canadianrealestatemagazine.ca 63 REAL ESTATE AGENT OF THE YEAR: COREY YOUNG, RE/MAX What is your experience as a real estate agent? I have been a real estate agent for just over four years. Every year since my first year, my sales have increased. Because I focus on working solely with investors, I have been able to help many investors find great properties that cash flow. e main thing that has helped my business as an investment-focused real estate agent is [the fact that] I am an investor myself. Having transacted on over 100 properties personally, this gave me the know-how to understand the fundamentals of real estate investment. I can now pass on this experience to my clients. Because our business has continued to grow, I am now able to have three licensed agents and many others as part of my team. is enables me to focus on the important areas of client relationship and property analysis – which I excel at – while my other team members focus on the other important aspects of completing the paperwork correctly, and the many other aspects of a real estate agent’s duty. How does it feel to win this award? I don’t know the exact number, but there are well over 20,000 real estate agents in Western Canada. To be even a finalist for this award is a great honour. To win it is very humbling. e best part of winning this award is it is a statement from my clients that they value our work. Without their say [and] their nominations, I wouldn’t have been recognized, so I am very thankful to my clients, my family, and friends who have supported me to this point. What other awards have you won or been nominated for in the past? RE/MAX 100% Club – 2009, 2010, 2011 RE/MAX Real Estate (Edmonton) Ltd. - #2 in Office Agents – 2010, 2011, 2012 Medallion Award – is is the top 5% in sales of all real estate agents registered with the Edmonton Real Estate Board – 2010, 2011 – will be 2012 as well. REIN Top Ten Player in 2006 Platinum REIN member – this means owning 50+ properties for investment. I have just recently been nominated for “Top 40 Under 40 Award in Edmonton” What do you think makes a good real estate agent? One who has their clients’ best interests at heart. One who listens to what their clients want, but is also not afraid to recommend an alternative if they see it might suit their client better. One who is skilled at art of negotiating and is willing to put in the time and effort needed to maximize their clients’ interests. What’s the best bit of property investment advice you’d give? Have a goal. Have a reason other than money as to why you are getting involved in real estate investment. If someone’s goal is to become rich, or to make a million dollars, they usually do not reach their goal. If their goal is to invest in real estate because it will help them have more time for family, more time for hobbies or personal pursuits, to have less stress in their lives, that is something to work towards, that is the motivation they need to reach that goal. What also goes along with that is their focus. Although, a large goal will help, if they try too many things all at the same time it won’t work or will be difficult. When it comes to investing in real estate, people need to just focus on one property at a time. at will move them closer to reaching their goal.
