Hello fellow Rebels
The summer is officially here and that means the
heat. There are a lot of outdoor activities that we
are doing so make sure you are staying cool and
drinking fluids. We have reached that time of year
when there is a car show about every weekend and
always something to do. That also applies to our
car show which is just around the corner. It is this
month and we still have a lot of work to do. We are
close but as always, we need your help. There is
always something to do and something that needs
help with. We are always looking for more help the
day of the show so please show up and help support
our club.
We also have the cone races coming up soon and
need help with that as well. Remember that the
car show, the swap meet and the cone races bring
in the most and are our largest fundraisers that we
have. We give a lot back to the community which is
what we are best known for and if we want to con-
tinue to do that we need your help to raise the
funds. There is always something to do or some-
thing that needs done at anytime. If you want to
help then just contact of one of the board members
and we will get you where you are needed the most.
If you would like to go to one of the upcoming car
shows then keep an eye on the newsletter for up-
coming events. Gary has a list and they are in the
newsletter.
As always please be safe on the roads. Watch out
for others and with schools out now there are kids
playing along the streets so pay close attention to
residential areas. Share the road safely with others
and get to your destination in a safe manner
See you on the streets,
Dave

THIS MONTH WE HIGHLIGHT OUR REBELS MEMBER ’ S
BRUCE AND MARGE KENNEDY
by Jim Jensen
402-580-3763
At Large Board Member
THIS 1960 EL CAMINO HAD AROUND 1000 MILES ON IT WHEN I
BOUGHT IT FROM A FRIEND LATER
THAT YEAR; HE SAID IT USED TOO MUCH GAS. IT WAS JET BLACK
AT THE TIME AND HAD A 348 CUBIC
INCH ENGINE, THREE SPEED STICK SHIFT ON THE COLUMN, 280
HORSEPOWER, AND THREE TWO-BARREL CARBURETORS. DURING
THE NEXT 3 ½ YEARS, I DID MINOR CUSTOMIZING (CHANGED THE
THREE SPEED TO A FOUR SPEED ON THE FLOOR), PAINTED IT
“BURMA GREEN”, AND DID A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF DRAG RACING.
EARLY IN 1964, IT WAS TOTALED IN AN ACCIDENT. I SOLD MY
PRIDE AND JOY FOR SALVAGE.
“ELKIE” AS I LIKE TO CALL HER, ROSE FROM HER ASHES LIKE A PHOENIX AND GOT BACK ON THE ROAD
WITH A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT OWNERS FROM THE LINCOLN AREA OVER THE NEXT 13 PLUS YEARS. IN
THE FALL OF 1977, LOW AND BEHOLD, I FOUND HER LYING DEAD IN A GARDEN IN HAVELOCK (FOUR FLAT
TIRES, DOORS HANGING OPEN, BED FULL OF TRASH, NO FLOORBOARS, ETC.)!
MARGE HAD NOT YET HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING ELKIE AND ONLY KNEW HER BY REPUTATION,
WHICH IN HER OPINION WAS “NO BETTER THAN SHE SHOULD BE”, AS THEY SAY. I BOUGHT THE CAR
BACK FROM THE OWNER AT THAT TIME FOR $200. (MARGE BELIEVED IT WAS WORTH ABOUT 2 CENTS). IN
THE 36 PLUS YEARS SINCE THEN, WE (YES, BOTH MARGE AND I) ARE HAPPY TO REPORT THAT
ELKIE’S VALUE HAS INCREASED A WHOLE LOT! WE AE NOT SURE, BUT THE INCREASE IN VALUE MIGHT
EQUAL THE AMOUNT WE HAVE PUT INTO HER OVER THE YEARS.
ELKIE HAD A COMPLETE BODY OFF RESTORATION ABOUT 8 OR 10 YEARS AGO. LOTS MORE CUSTOMIZING
WAS DONE TO THE CAR, INCLUDING ADDING A LOUVERED SCOOPED HOOD, TUBE GRILL, AND TUNNELED
AERIAL. SHE NOW HAS A 350 ENGINE AND A FOUR BARREL CARBURETOR. SHE WAS REPAINTED WHAT I
CALL “CANDY APPLE RED.” SHE RIDES VERY LOW AND LOOKS AND SOUNDS AWESOME! WE SHOW HER AT
SEVERAL CAR SHOWS EACH YEAR. THE LAST WORK DONE WAS ABOUT A YEAR AGO; IT ADDRESSED SOME
STEERING ALIGNMENT ISSUES THAT HAD PLAQUED HER/US FOR A WHILE AND MADE HER SAFE TO DRIVE
ON THE ROAD AGAIN.
THE CAR HAS APPEARED IN THREE MAGAZINES DURING HER VERY LONG LIFE: JOHN LEE WROTE ABOUT
HER IN THE NOVEMBER 1962 EDITION OF RODDING AND RE-STYLING, SHE WAS ONE OF THE CARS ON THE
COVER OF ROD & CUSTOM’S
AMERICRUISE 96 (THIS WAS BY BLIND
LUCK), AND I TOLD HER STORY IN THE
NOVEMBER 2011 EDITION OF CHEVY
CLASSICS MAGAZINES.
SHE STILL DOES NOT GET VERY GOOD

Most of a person's bone mass is achieved by early adult-
hood. After that time, the bone mass gradually declines
throughout the rest of a person's life. There is a normal
rate of decline in bone mass with age in both men and
women. Want to find out about yours? The Arthritis
Center of Nebraska has donated a free bone density
scan. There will be a sign up sheet at the June meeting
for members. The drawing will be held at the July Meet-
ing and you need to be present to win.
The next Rebels Meeting will be held one
week earlier on June 18th at Pioneer park.
It is an important meeting before our car
show, our biggest event of the year! We do
a walk thru for our show, stuff goodie bags
and hold committee meetings. The club
provides the meat and table service, please
bring a dish to share and your own bever-
age. PS Have you volunteered yet to help
at the show?? Many hands make light
work you know!!

Rebels sure do enjoy Margaret’s cakes and she tells us she sure en-
joys baking them. Margaret bakes 2-3 of her specialty cakes for
each monthly meeting so we asked if we could purchase some bak-
ing goods or in any way repay her. When pressed, Margaret
generously said she would like members to bring non-perishable
food items for the Food Bank in lieu of anything else. So feel free
(but not obligated) to bring your non-perishable food items to any
meeting and Margaret will see that they get to the Food Bank.
Thanks Margaret! We appreciate you baking skills!!!
