Holy Hot August Rebels,
As we move into the hottest month of the year it hap-
pens to be one of the busiest months also! There is no
shortage of car shows and the cone races are coming
up as well. Since it’s so hot, please remember to make
sure that you are drinking lots of water and Gatorade,
wear loose clothing, and a hat for all of us bald guys.
If you are really feeling the heat, find some shade or
AC.
The last meeting at Val’s seemed low on members but
always was nice to see everyone that was there and to
eat good food!
We still need volunteers for the cone races. We need
more than 10 to 15 people to cover all the slots. If we
can’t get the volunteers, we may have to start declin-
ing these kinds of fundraisers. I would hate to see this
happen because we wouldn’t have the funds down the
road for our donations. What’s great is that it’s a fam-
ily friendly event! Last year Sandy Francisco and I did
the gate and the fol-
lowing day me and
my boys did the gate
and they loved it and
want to help again
this year. So please
call Gary Weyers.
See you next meeting!

THIS MONTH WE HIGHLIGHT OUR REBELS MEMBERS
Lydell and Margaret Otley
by Jim Jensen

I was at work one day and a guy I had worked with for many years came up to me and told me I should
come look at an old car he thought I would be interested in. He said it was a 1938 Ford sedan and it was
in really good shape. He said his x-wife’s half sisters husband owned it and wanted to sell it. I told him
I wasn’t interested that I didn’t like 1938 Fords. He kept bugging me to go see it, so I agreed. Later that
same week he said somebody came along and bought it. I said no big deal. About 6 months later he
stopped me again and said the deal fell through and I really needed to see it. This time he told me it was
either and 1936 or 1937 sedan. I finally agreed to go look at it. When we got there the car was in his
garage in his house and it had not been out in 21 years. He couldn’t get the garage door open. They fi-
nally got help and got it open. There it was a 1939 Ford sedan Deluxe. It was so covered with dust I
couldn’t tell what color it was. There was so much junk in the garage and stuff pile up higher than the
fenders. It took them 20 minutes to clear a path for me to get to the passenger door and open it to see
inside. It was in good condition. I couldn’t see the front so they climbed over stuff until he could hold a
mirror up so I could see the front end. I went home and told Margaret she needed to come see this. She
looked it over and then we went to lunch to talk it over. I wanted a 1941 Ford Coupe and she wanted
either a 62 Chevy or a Lead Sled. It was too good a car and deal to pass up. I got a buddy of mine to
winch it out and onto a flatbed.
This 2002 on Dec. 7th..(Pearl Har-
bor Day). We took it to Eagle and
stored it for over a year. Then to
Perry Siebert in Bradshaw, Ne.
We put in a SBC crate engine and
700R4 Transmission and Mus-
tang rearend. Air, disc brakes
Mustang front IFS, power win-
dows. Then in 2004 we started
driving it even though it needed a
paint job and carpet. We’ve
driven over 24,000 miles since
and still needs paint and carpet.
And that’s the way I remember it.

On August 5, 1914, the American Traffic Signal Company installed a traf-
fic signal system on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Ave-
nue in Cleveland, Ohio It had two colors, red and green, and a buzzer,
based on the design of James Hoge, to provide a warning for color
changes. The design by James Hoge allowed police and fire stations
to control the signals in case of emergency. The first four-way, three-color
traffic light was created by police officer William
Potts in Detroit, Michigan in 1920. Ashville, Ohio claims to be the home
of the oldest working traffic light in the United States, used at an inter-
section of public roads from 1932 to 1982 when it was moved to a local
museum
