Record Label Research Label is short for record label. Record labels are companies that manufacture and distribute recorded music and promote that music (or at least hire people to handle the promotion). There are two kinds of record labels independent (indie labels) and major labels (aka big four labels). Indie record labels are independent companies that do not have a corporate backer. Major labels are large corporations often owned by a parent company, like Sony. The 4 big record label companies are Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, EMI and Warner Music Group. These are the 4 record labels which represent a majority of the music that’s sold today. Artists who are signed to a Big Four record label are either signed to the central label or signed to a subsidiary of the label. For instance, a band may be signed to Sony, or they may be signed to the Sony on a beginners level to Columbia Records. There are two kinds of record labels independent (indie labels) and major labels (aka big four labels). Indie record labels are independent companies that do not have a corporate backer. That level have their staff and usually sign their own artists and make the financial decisions by themselves. However the main company is the most answerable over everything as they set the overall budget and make important decisions. As we are a singer-songwriter genre, we have decided to go for an independent record label company. This is because many singer-songwriters are independent as their solo artists and like to produce their own music. For every department in a record label company, there is someone in charge of it. The departments are: Business Affairs Department, legal Department, A&R (Artists and Repertoire) Department, Art Department, Marketing Department, Publicity Department, New Media Department, Artist Development Department, Sales Department, Label Liaison and Promotion Department's.These are all important departments to help the artist and album succeed well within the music industry.Independent record labels come in all sizes and shapes. The large, well-funded indie labels are organized by departments much like the major label operations like the big 4 record label companies. The more money a label has the more they can hire people to handle the various responsibilities of a label. Smaller labels organize the work of promoting, selling and publicizing their releases. These smaller labels have an awesome task of marketing their records because there may be only two or three employees, including the label owner, doing the A&R scouting, calling radio stations about airplay, working with a distributor (if they even have one), checking with the music retailers, and coordinating the publicity and new media efforts, as well as dealing directly with their artists and bands, in order to help them find shows and gigs together.
